The San Francisco 49ers loved what they saw from Trey Lance in the first week of preseason.

The young QB out of NDSU endured a rookie season with plenty of ups and downs and enters his sophomore year with plenty of questions above his head.

But at least, one thing's clear: He doesn't have to worry about Jimmy Garoppolo anymore.

Garoppolo Is Away From The Team

Peter King recently reported that Garoppolo isn't working out with the team right now. He doesn't even own a playbook or attends QB meetings as he continues to seek a trade away from the Bay area:

"Garoppolo, who quarterbacked this team to a win over Aaron Rodgers and the top-seeded Packers eight months ago, is a strange sight to behold these days," wrote King. "He works out, throws and rehabs apart from his teammates, most often when they’re inside in meetings. When the other 89 men on the San Francisco roster are practicing outside, Garoppolo is usually inside, or on his way home. I heard he does not have a playbook, does not attend quarterback or team meetings and barely knows new quarterbacks coach Brian Griese."

He Used To Ghost The 49ers

While that makes sense now, it's not the first time that Jimmy G has isolated himself from the rest of the team. According to an unnamed assistant coach, he used to 'ghost' the Niners in the offseason every year:

“Once he left that press conference [announcing his new contract] nobody heard from him for weeks and weeks. He didn’t return calls, he didn’t return texts — he basically just vanished. And we were looking at each other going, ‘What just happened?’" the assistant coach said.

Lance May Not Be Ready

Lance barely played any competitive football before making the league. And while the talent is there, HC Kyle Shanahan knows there will be plenty of growing pains ahead of him:

“Is Trey ready to take it on his shoulders?” Shanahan said. “He shouldn’t be. He hasn’t gone through it enough. I believe in him as a man, as a person. I believe in his talent. I don’t think he is going to make or break our season, just like in 2019 and last year, I didn’t think Jimmy was going to make or break our season. But what sucks is when you’re learning how to play and you’re not there yet, how do you not get worse sometimes when that pressure’s on you and you need to go through the growing pains?”

So, the Niners are going to let their prized youngster grow through his mistakes, as they should. There's no room for Garoppolo anymore, and there's no logical reason to pay him that much not to play, especially given how he used to treat him.

Jimmy G could still get another shot in the league if he becomes a free agent. Don't get used to watching him in a Niners jersey.
