Los Angeles Lakers fans are as loyal as they can be ruthless. If things are going well, then they'll stand with you until the end of time. If not, they'll make you feel their wrath.
It doesn't matter whether you're a former MVP, a multiple-time champion, an All-Star, or whatever. Everything you've accomplished prior to joining the Lakers means absolutely nothing to them.
Westbrook Said He Won't Tolerate The 'Westbrick' Nickname Anymore
Russell Westbrook can attest to that. He's been on the wrong end of the media for most of the season, up to the point that he's finally speaking up and stating that he can no longer tolerate the disrespect:
It really hit me the other day, Westbrook told the media. Me and wife were at the teacher-parent conference for my son. And the teacher told me, Noah is so proud of his last name, he writes it everywhere, he tells everyone ‘I’m Westbrook’… I kind of sat there in shock and it hit me. I can’t no longer allow people, for example, Westbrick to me is now shaming, shaming my name and my legacy for my kid. It’s a name that means more to me, my wife, my mom, my dad, the ones that paved the way for me.
Fans Are Flooding Westbrook's Feed With 'Westbrick' Comments
Westbrook and his wife called out Lakers fans for how they've 'harassed' him throughout the season. But far from being ashamed or sorry, the fans took offense in those words and took to Instagram to flood the comment section with 'Westbrick' comments and brick emojis.
Magic Stands Up For Westbrook
That's why Lakers legend Magic Johnson had to come in Westbrook's defense, urging the fans to cut it out and stop it with the attacks:
Laker Nation, it's our responsibility to come together and support Russell Westbrook and his family, Magic tweeted. Threats and attacks on the Westbrook family are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. There's no place in sports for this type of behavior, period.
Westbrook Is An Important Player On The Team, Says Magic
Johnson, who also called out Westbrook not so long ago, urged the fans to just rally around him and support him as the team continues to make a playoff push:
Russell plays an important role on the Lakers team and will be a key component to the success of the rest of the season and the NBA Playoffs, Johnson added. Let's do better, rally around the Westbrook family, and support them.
This Will Be Westbrook's 'Last Dance'
Given how he's been treated and how he failed to adapt to the Lakers' needs, one could pretty much assure that Westbrook won't be back with the team next season.
The question is whether any other team will be willing to absorb his massive contract or if the Lakers will be forced to buy him out or waive and stretch him.
