$1.2 million in cash was missing from a Swiss Air jet that landed at JFK airport in New York City late Monday.

According to a Fox News report , FBI spokesman J. Peter Donald said that they’re investigating but they aren’t sure where the cash vanished. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said simply that they had no comment.

The New York Daily Post had a more extended report on the $1.2 million missing cash .

The money was supposed to be transported to New York in the exterior cargo hold but it simply wasn’t there. According to The Post’s anonymous source, there wasn’t any evidence that the hold had been broken into.

So it’s possible that the money was diverted before it ever got on the plane.

However, there is still an ongoing investigation into whether or not it was possible for anyone at the New York end to quickly open and steal the money, which was described as being $100 bills weighing a total of around 22 pounds.

It’s only the latest in a series of high-profile international heists that seem designed to make millions for persons or teams unknown.

In May, the 2013 Cannes Film Festiva l was hit twice, with the thieves making off with a single necklace worth over $2 million dollars shortly after the first theft of over $1 million in gems.

Also in May, thieves targeted the take from a Justin Bieber concert in Johannesburg, South Africa. The patient team may have taken days to chisel into the safe room in anticipation of the event, according to some descriptions of the heist that may have netted more than one million South African rand.

Neither the FBI nor anyone else has yet revealed who owned the stolen money taken from the Swiss International Air flight or why the $1.2 million in missing cash was brought to JFK.
