It’s over for 25% of Zillow employees

Real estate startup Zillow is cutting 25 percent of its workforce despite enjoying 5.4 million unique visitors per month and growing revenues. The company, however, is anticipating a prolonged recession.

In a blog post, Zillow founder and CEO Rich Barton said that the cuts were necessary.

“This was an incredibly painful decision for me and the leadership team, but, in the end, we concluded that we had no choice but to securely batten down the hatches as we sail into a major economic storm,” Barton said.

Zillow is funded by Benchmark Capital, Technology Crossover Ventures, and Par Capital.

Perhaps I should have linked, and usually I would, but certainly with large sites with heaps of funding that don’t need a leg up and where they aren’t the focus of the story, sometimes I forget to link. But something is strange when a company with the standing of Zillow sends requests like this.

Glassdoor Announces Board of Directors, But Still Not Disclosing What it’s Building

Glassdoor, billed as “a new consumer technology company that has yet to disclose details of its product,” has announced the remaining three members of its five-member board of directors.

The new Glassdoor board members include: Erik Blachford, CEO of TerraPass and former president and CEO of Expedia, Inc. and CEO of IAC/InterActiveCorp’s travel division, Stephen Kaufer, president and CEO of TripAdvisor and former president of CDS, Inc., and Rusty Rueff, former CEO of SNOCAP and previous EVP at Electronic Arts and executive at PepsiCo. The three join Glassdoor co-founders Robert Hohman and Rich Barton, CEO, chairman and co-founder of Zillow.com.

It’s an impressive line up, but we still don’t know what the company is building. Depending on which rumor you believe, Glassdoor.com is real estate related, possibly with a brokerage focus, or a social networking company focused on employment conditions. The only things we do know: they’ve changed their logo since raising $3 million in March, and the company claims it’s currently in private beta testing with the mystery product “expected to debut publicly in the coming months.” What ever it is, with this depth of talent and experience on the board we’ll be watching carefully.
