Thanks to Drake, the phrase YOLO has been overused to the point of being obnoxious on just about every platform imaginable, and so Walgreens and Macy’s decided to get in on the “fun” by introducing hats and t-shirts bearing the phrase.

As it turns out, Drake isn’t too happy about that.

On Christmas Eve, Drake uploaded two pictures to his Instagram account of YOLO hats and shirts from Walgreens and Macy’s, respectively. He wasn’t happy about either, saying that both companies “gotta either chill or cut the cheque.”

As Gawker points out, it’s unknown whether or not Drake actually has a trademark on the phrase YOLO–but a lot of people are certainly trying to get it.

In case you’ve somehow managed to avoid hearing the phrase until now, YOLO stands for “You Only Live Once.” Canadian rapper Drake is credited for popularizing the phrase, but internet meme compendium Know Your Meme attributes the first usage to Adam Mesh from “The Average Joe.”

The site claims that the phrase was first used during the third season of the NBC reality show. Some time afterwards, Mesh launched an entire “You Only Live Once” clothing line.

In a tweet earlier on this month (via Huffington Post), Mesh said that the phrase was “meant as inspiration to live life to the fullest,” adding that he is “disappointed” in its current use.

The Oxford American Dictionary has named GIF as the 2012 Word of the Year.

GIF is actually an acronym for Graphics Interchange Format, and it has actually been around since 1987. The Oxford Dictionary describes an animated GIF as “a primitive technology used to provide animations, particularly on web sites.” In the early days, a GIF would usually be a simple graphic, such as a spinning globe. In its recent resurgence, GIFs are more often seen as snippets of real events, giving them the form of a short video.

The Sideshow reports that GIF wasn’t the only word considered for the award as YOLO, the acronym meaning “You only live once” was also a runner up. Superstorm was another runner up.

“GIF celebrated a lexical milestone in 2012, gaining traction as a verb, not just a noun,”  Katherine Martin, head of the US dictionaries program at Oxford said. ”The GIF has evolved from a medium for pop-cultural memes into a tool with serious applications including research and journalism, and its lexical identity is transforming to keep pace.”

Minnesota Public Radio listed several other words that were in the running, while also criticizing Oxford for failing to note that GIF is an acronym, not a word. Nevertheless, it has been named the 2012 Word of the Year.

Among the others considered were Eurogeddon, Super PAC, nomophobia (the anxiety of being without one’s mobile phone), and Higgs boson (the so-called God Particle).

The same organization also picked a Word of the Year for the United Kingdom. For the folks on the other side of the Atlantic, the word chosen was omnishambles. Omnishambles is defined as “a situation that has been comprehensively mismanaged, characterized by a string of blunders and miscalculations.”

YOLO (You Only Live Once) has become the rallying cry for teens, tweens, and people who are about to do something really stupid. Ervin McKinness, an aspiring rapper, used the hashtag #YOLO on several tweets before he died in a car crash.

Vibe Magazine reports that McKinness and four other men in their early 20s were killed in a drunk driving accident at about 1:40 am on Labor Day in Ontario, Canada.

Twenty minutes before the accident McKinness, who rapped under the names Jew’elz and Inkky, wrote on Twitter:

“Drunk af (as f*ck) going 120 drifting corners #F–kIt YOLO / Driving tweeting sipping the cup f–k yolo I’m turning it up.”

Marquell Bogan, 23, Dylan George, 20, Jonathan Watson, 21 and JaJuan Bennett, 23, were all killed in the crash.

Vibe reports that McKinness wasn’t driving at the time during the crash. Judging by the young rappers tweets, however, it seems like he was drinking in the car at the time of the accident.

“YOLO” was popularized by the Drake song “The Motto.” Drake sings:

“You only live once, that’s the motto, ni–a Yolo / We bout it every day, every day, every day / Like we sitting on the bench, ni–a we don’t really play.”

The term has, according to Urban Dictionary, has become ”carpe diem” for stupid people. It’s used as an excuse to do something dangerous like driving drunk.

According to Vibe, McKinness and his friends decided to go partying over Labor Day weekend because Inkky had just signed a record deal. They decided to get in their car and drive around drunk because, well, you know, you only live once.

Katie Couric is starting a new daytime talk show, and is currently combing for high-profile guests. Reports suggest that Couric is looking at Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, George Clooney, and even President Barack Obama for potential interviews.

Her new talk show, Katie, is produced by ABC Studios, and is set to premiere September 10th. So who will share the dais with Couric when her show goes live? The hunt is on-going, but Couric is courting big names in politics and celebrity circles for an appearance on her new show, reports MSN. “I have invited both candidates and their wives and anyone else in their family they’d like to bring,” Couric said. “And yes, I have invited Sarah Palin to come on the show as well.”

Unfortunately, Couric has not yet received a response from her ideal interviewees.

Couric’s new show is meant to tackle tougher issues that “you think people want to know more about,” according to the host. In addition to high-profile interviews, the show will also include a bucket-list style segment called “YOLO” (popular parlance for “you only live once”) and Couric even shared some of her own “YOLO” wishes. Among other things, Couric would like to jump out of an airplane, star in a Broadway musical, and go on a date with George Clooney, reports Yahoo!News.

“I’d like to go out with George Clooney, if you can arrange that,” she said with a laugh.

Couric announced her ABC talk show after a short stint with CBS News last year. Couric cites her experience at CBS as the toughest of her career, reports NBC. “I was criticized a lot,” she explained. “And the criticism seemed so shallow: They didn’t like the way I was holding my hands doing the news, or the white jacket I wore after Labor Day,” she recalled.

“It was hard for me to understand some of the vitriol that was unleashed and sent my way,” Couric said. “But it was a great character-building experience.”
