Despite my post yesterday about today’s GeoCities rapidly approaching closure, I didn’t realize how long it’d been since I’d seen a GeoCities site.

XKCD has done a brilliant tribute, capturing all the late 90s “I’ve got a website!” enthusiasm of GeoCities in its awful blue text on a black backgrounded, broken HTML tagged, blinking GIF-fed, off-centered, Comic Sans heavy, under construction glory. For anyone who tried their hand (and failed) at an early hobbyist site will really appreciate the effort.

It appears that the site itself is the tribute, so I imagine it won’t be viewable for very long. I’ve screencapped some of it, but it definitely doesn’t do the full effort justice.

Apparently, there are people out there that don’t love XKCD, but I’ve never met one.

Someone went and live-actioned the XKCD take on the Discovery channel’s popular “boom de yada” spots, and it’s pretty adorable. 0:24 made me laugh, and warnings for stick figure sex. (Implied.)

AT&T quickly backed down, but not after letting us all know they were censoring sites for the hell of it. At the time of the incident, 40-60 million Americans were prevented from accessing parts of the site.
