It is a simple fact that jails in the United States are overcrowded and people are falling through the cracks with either people being released who shouldn’t be or people that are constantly going in and out jail, people that shouldn’t be there.

University of South Carolina researcher Dana DeHart discovered this aspect of the problem when she was conducting a study looking into the backgrounds of women in jail. As DeHart noted in one case in particular she kept seeing the same woman cycling in and out of jail, a woman with mental health problems.

This was a woman that didn’t need to be in jail said DeHart but the jails are overburdened and not capable of dealing with mental illness. It’s a matter of not having enough staff or the programming to help them deal with the situation.

DeHart’s study looked at the data from 219 women that were incarcerated in both rural and urban jails and found that 55 percent of those women meet the criteria for lifetime PTSD, and that 60 percent have strong histories of drug and other substance addiction.

Additionally women who have been incarcerated show increased rates of serious mental illness when compared to women outside of jail. These illnesses include major depression, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, and brief psychotic disorder.

“There are a lot of indications that people who are incarcerated have high rates of mental health issues, but few studies have examined the prevalence of serious mental illness among women in jails. Thus far, most studies have concentrated on prison and not jail,” said DeHart, one of the study’s co-investigators.

Stopping at Starbucks before heading into the office might actually be helping some women stave off depression. A new study has discovered that drinking two to three cups of caffeinated coffee per day makes a female 15% less likely to suffer from depression while 4 cup a day drinkers are 20% less likely to suffer from depression.

The study, conducted at Harvard University examined the lifestyle drinking choices of more than 50,000 US nurses over a 24-year period and is considered the largest of its kind.

The study closely resembles another research project that showed how moderate coffee drinkers are less likely to commit suicide.

The positive effects of coffee have been known for quite some time and include a possible reduction in prostate cancer, breast cancer and stroke.

Since the new study only includes a study of actively working nurses some skeptics argue that the type of job and lifestyles lived by nurses may have played a role in their reduced cases of depression when mixed with caffeinated coffee.

The study also suggests that men may also benefit from drinking a few cups of joe each day.

Of all the cancers that can affect a woman the most insidious has to be ovarian cancer due to the inability of doctors to be able to easily, and reliably detect it in its early stages. As a result doctors tend to want women who are considered to be at a high risk of getting this kind of cancer to preemptively remove their ovaries.

Well thankfully that may not be the standard course of action in the future due to some researchers at the University of Southern California and the University of Connecticut who have come up with a new imaging device that combines three other known imaging technologies that can spot tissue irregularities that might signal ovarian cancer.

Describing their hybrid device in the September issue of the Optical Society’s Biomedical Optics Express journal, the researchers say they have combined photoacoustic imaging for contrast, optical coherence tomography for hi-res subsurface imaging (called OCT, this is the top image at the right), and pulse-echo ultrasound for deep-tissue imaging (second image) to identify malignant tumors.

The superimposed images (at the bottom of the images) enabled the team to spot malignant tissue (indicated with yellow diamond arrows).

A new study conducted by researchers at Indiana University has found that women cheat nearly as much as men, although their reasons for cheating tend to be very different. University researchers polled more than 900 participants and found that 23% of men and 19% of women have cheated on their partners.

A study in the ’90s found that 10% to 15% of women cheated although the reasons seem to have remained the same, women did it because of unhappiness in their relationships while men most often cheated just for the sake of having sex.

One psychologist believes that more women in the workplace may be contributing to the increase towards infidelity, noting:

“[There's] too much time working closely together, in private spaces, taking a break and talking about personal matters.”

That same psychologist says the internet has allowed ”people to act on infidelity” while adding, ”Also, the Internet makes it easier to connect with old flames.”

A new online petition asking Wal-Mart not to sell Duke Nukem Forever has over 5,000 names on it. In its protest against the game’s sexist content, the petition seems especially irritated by Forever‘s “Capture the Babe” multiplayer mode.

In this game variant, players have to carry a squirming ‘babe’ over their shoulder and slap her on the backside to calm her down if she ‘freaks out’. Yeah …  I know. Petitioner Shelby Knox writes:

“To be clear, Duke Nukem Forever makes a game out of physical and sexual violence against women … the Capture the Babe mode of the Duke Nukem game, which will be played primarily by young people, sends the message that physical and sexual violence against women is normal, acceptable, and even funny. It’s not — and we have to say so.”

It’s not an entirely accurate claim (Duke Nukem Forever is rated ‘Mature’ so ‘young people’ shouldn’t be playing it), but it’s pretty obvious that Forever is going to be the most misogynistic mainstream game for some years. Its defenders say the game is ‘tongue-in-cheek’, and fair enough: I see that also.

In fact, I’m not really offended by Duke Nukem Forever. More than anything, I just see it as a sort of embarrassing relic that has bizarrely been revived for 2011. It’s tasteless, tacky, and not smart or witty in the slightest. However, I’m also unconvinced this will spawn a generation of men who beat women. It’s just too silly and deeply embedded in the realms of fantasy and satire to be taken seriously.

The cheerleader mom has nothing over this lunatic who lists her favorite activity on Facebook as “getting drunk” is now headed to jail for running over her cousin, not just once but twice.

Apparently it all started when Melanie Spanopoulos and her cousin, Giselle Penagos, got into a vicious fight over some guy on Facebook who had accepted a friend request from Spanopoulos but not her cousin Giselle Penagos.

After watching the Jets game at a bar, Spanopoulos — whose Facebook page notes that her favorite activities are “getting drunk” and “speaking gibberish” — and Penagos headed home on the Southern State Parkway.

Galgano said that’s when one of the girls found out the other one was in touch with a potential love interest on Facebook.

Spanopoulos’ lawyer, Dennis Lemke, said the man refused Penagos’ friend request but accepted one from his client.

Then the fur flew.

Spanopoulos pulled off the parkway onto a dark street near Elmont Avenue and Penagos got out. When Penagos refused to get back in the van, Spanopoulos allegedly leaped out and the pair wrestled each other to the ground.

The suspect then hopped behind the wheel and plowed into her cousin with the van, cops said. She then allegedly put the vehicle in reverse and smashed into her a second time.

Well thanks to the Brits the cat is out of the bag. Yup they did a study looking into how women and men lie, and after a poll of 3,000 people they have come to the ultimate conclusion that men lie more than women.

The results came in with men telling a lie at least three times a day or 1.092 lies per year whereas a woman will only lie around 728 times in a year.

This video of a neglected girlfriend breaking her boyfriend’s PS3? Holy crap, could actually be real. This unnamed girl reached the end of her tether when she found her layabout, jobless boyfriend playing games at 3am. According to her commentary, this sort of happens a lot.

If this is fake, then I’ll say this much: it’s certainly better acted than the previous video. There are plenty of F-bombs (so NSFW), which also makes me believe this is the real thing. And then the fact the dude is playing Ghostbusters at 3am makes me think it isn’t again.

I’m sorry but I have to say this from the very beginning – this is utter and total bullshit.

Word has come down from the British Columbia Court of Appeals that the International Olympics Commissions can not be forced to allow female ski jumpers on the grounds that their rules go against the Canadian Charter of Rights.

Justice Ann Rowles, one of the three appeal court judges who heard the case over the last two days, said she was aware a decision was needed quickly. Reasons for the decision will be released next week.

The women could seek leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada, but lawyer Ross Clark, who is representing the ski jumpers, said such an appeal would need to overcome a lot of hurdles.

The appeal to B.C.’s highest court was an attempt to overturn a B.C. Supreme Court decision that found that while excluding the women from competing is discriminatory, the International Olympic Committee is not subject to the Charter and cannot be forced to hold a women’s ski jumping event.

I’m not blaming the British Columbia Court of Appeals for their decision because in fact they were right. However that doesn’t change the fact that the IOC policy against female ski jumpers is archaic and just plain wrong. The IOC argument has always been thatthere are not enough competitions to merit making a woman’s ski jumping an Olympic sport.

Like I said at the beginning this is bullshit and the IOC is totally wrong in excluding woman from participating in a female ski jumping category.
