As expected West Virginia on Friday “fired” head football coach Bill Stewart after a reporter accused him of asking members of the media to dig up “dirt” on head-coach-in-waiting Dana Holgorsen.

Sports News revealed that the university fired Stewart for, “conduct detrimental to the University.”

The move to fire the coach or rather allow him to resign in public shows the universities disapproval for the coach who was set to resign at the end of this season anyways.

Stewart’s season win-loss record was exactly the same in each of his three seasons at 9-4 (5-2 conference).

Holgorsen will receive a starting salary of $1.4 million with a yearly increase of $250,000 for as long as he retains the Morgantown position.

An explosion has been reported underground at Massey’s Performance Coal Company Upper Big Branch Mine in Raleigh County, West Virginia at around 4PM today.

One report says workers are trapped after the explosion and a subsequent roof collapse, but there have been no reports of injuries or deaths related to the blast. A spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection confirmed that miners were trapped but was unable to confirm how many.

According to MSHA statistics, the mine has a non-fatal injury record worse than the national average, and at least two fatalities have occurred at the mine in the past decade. Massey Energy made a statement but declined to comment on the effects of the explosion, saying information regarding injuries or deaths “is uncertain at this time.” Ron Wooten, director of the state Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training, confirmed that mine rescue teams and other emergency personnel were en route to the scene but also opted not to comment on possible injuries or deaths at the mine.

UPDATE: CNN is reporting six people have died and 21 are unaccounted for at the Raleigh County mine.

In a move to almost guarantee a challenge in the courts Sen. Mike Green of Raleigh County, West Virginia, introduced a bill that would see sending harassing e-mails or other computer based communications a crime. The bill was amended by the Senate Judiciary Committee to include statements posted on web pages or online forums.

So in other words – if the bill passes – you had better start watching what you say; if you live in West Virginia that is, on Facebook or any of the other social media service. After all harassment is something that can be read as many different things. The State bill says though that harassment (bullying) is the posting of untrue statements and encouraging others to spread the lies.

Civil liberties advocates question whether that goes too far.

The bill would make such statements a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500, up to six months in jail, or both. Repeat offenders would see those penalties double.

Source: Associated Press

So no more posting that your boss is an idiot if you live in West Virginia because besides getting you fired you could end up in jail.
