ASHBURN, Virginia – Staring down 10 loses for the second consecutive season, Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan admitted today that whipping the ailing team back into shape is a much tougher task than he had originally thought.

Since taking charge of the Redskins in Jan. 2010, Shanahan has been working non-stop to tighten the roster passed to him by Jim Zorn. A mere 12 of the 53 current team members have seen life beyond the bench since his arrival. Still, the Redskins notoriously boast four straight last-place finishes, which is a first in the NFC East’s 42-year history.

In the wake of the 33-26 home loss to the Vikings, dropping the Redskins 5-10, Shanahan lamented:

“We had less depth than I thought. We were a little bit older at a few different positions. I thought we might keep those players a little longer than we did.”

Agreeing with Shanahan, nose tackle Barry Cofield talked about the Redskins’ defense:

“It’s depressing. The way we got trampled, it’s the worst defense we played all year. When teams run the ball like that, it hurts me personally. It’s very disappointing, especially coming off of last week where we played well.”

Cofield continued:

“We got a lot to think about for next week. We got a lot to think about for the offseason. Hopefully guys use it as a driving force.”

Shanahan is optimistic about the future, with most of his new-found hope now riding on a new front seven on defense, and fresh running backs Roy Helu and Evan Royster, who combined for four 100-yard games the past five weeks.

“I see a big difference from two years ago,” said Shanahan, “We have a much younger football team. We have a lot more depth at a lot of different positions. I feel good about the type of players that we do have. I feel good about the direction we’re heading.”

Only time will tell.

Do you share Shanahan’s optimistic outlook about the future of the Redskins?

It wasn’t a pretty game for for Rex Grossman during Sunday’s loss to Philadelphia and now Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has made the decision to bench Grossman in favor of QB2 John Beck.

Speaking about being pulled as the teams starting quarterback Grossman said:

“I was frustrated,” and “Not completely surprised, but disappointed that I wasn’t able to come back off that game.”

While Grossman acknowledged his poor ball control and overall play during the Eagles outing he also said he should be kept as the teams starting QB based off his first four starts of the season.

“I do think they were good performances,” he said. “The frustrating part about it is they should’ve been great. But statistics and ratings — you go out there to win. You don’t try to put up numbers. It’s very obvious when you have a great rating and you put up a lot of points, there’s no doubt you played great. Any time you don’t produce enough points and statistics, it leaves room for judgment.

“I had an opportunity to make it clear as day, and it wasn’t. For the first four games, I played well. I could show you to prove it, but it doesn’t matter. At this point, it is what it is.” Overall Grossman has 18 giveaways in just eight Redskins starts

The position was definitely Grossman’s to lose after he had to prove himself over the preseason in a tight race for the starting position with Beck, a position Grossman thought he had locked down when noting:

“I felt secure in my job … So that wasn’t the case at all.”

In the meantime Grossman has had a hard time holding onto the ball, allowing nine interceptions in five games with two lost fumbles.

While Grossman is not currently taking two many snaps with the teams first-line offense he acknowledges that a few bad plays could put him back on the field with his old job in place.

In the meantime Shanahan has voices his approval for both of his top quarterbacks:

“I believe in Rex, and I believe in John Beck,” Shanahan said. “I told you that from Day One. Both guys, I’m hoping, are going to be here for a long time. … I’ve been around quarterbacks in the National Football League for a long time, and I know these guys have got what it takes.”

In the meantime switching out Rex Grossman for John Beck is a no-brainer after Grossman started the season with a 110.5 passer rating against the New York Giants only to watch his rating slip to 74.9, then 77.5, followed by a 48.5 performance and then this weeks 23.7. When all is said and done Grossman’s 66.5 overall passer rating is the second worst in the league.

Do you think Shanahan made the right decision in pulling Grossman in favor of Beck?

During the Dallas Cowboys game against the Washington Redskins on Monday night football quarterback Tony Romo received two pain injections in his fractured rib and now it looks like he might need another injection during the Detroit Lions game on Sunday afternoon.

After practicing on Thursday Romo said:

“I would say this, there’s a test that just goes, come over here (lightly tap his rib area) and see how hard you can do it until I feel it,” adding, “And if I feel it I’m going to need it.”

According to Romo he’ll be using a “pain” method to determine if a shot is needed, the QB says if he takes a “hard tap” and it hurts he’ll take the painful shot, if he’s okay he’ll continue to play through the fractured rib pain.

During his game against the Redskins Romo chose to wear a protective vest however he said it hindered his throws. Romo completed 22 of 36 passes for 255 yards with one interception and no sacks. It was only the seventh game since Romo became the Cowboy’s starting QB in 2006 that he didn’t throw a touchdown pass.

Do you think players should be given pain medications that allow them to avoid the feeling of pain or does it give them an unfair advantage while other players play with pain and no medication?

I know, I know sometimes talking about the Washington Redskins feels like piling on. I also happen to know that former General Manger Vinny Cerrato was in way over his head. I point this out because it is my belief that Daniel Snyder is one of the worst owners in football. Let’s face it the guy is exactly what football does not want, mega rich and clueless about football. I am going to talk about two trades, and why each of them prove that the Redskins have done a terrible job building up there team.

Let us get in the way back machine and go back to the time when Cerrato offered two first round draft picks for Chad Ochocinco. Two first round picks for a wide out is over paying by a literal ton. For whatever reason, another not so great owner Mike Brown, and his Cincinnati Bengals turned Cerrato down. For me it is another clear attempt by the Redskins to go out and get a name, without doing any of the other required football work. How good would Chad Ochocinco be if he had no QB to throw him the ball, or no “O” line to protect the QB. Football is a puzzle and for years the Redskins have been playing with out all the pieces.

The next trade that never happened was a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs for RB Jamaal Charles. I recently ranked him in my top five fantasy running backs for the 2011 season, but he could have been a Redskin for the low low price of a third round pick. In 2009 Charles was fourth on the Chiefs depth chart and having trouble picking up the offense. Cerrato offered Kansas City a fourth and the Chiefs wisely upped that offer to a third. The Redskins thought that was too high a price to pay. Giving up a third round pick for a difference maker is what good NFL front offices have to do.

According to Rex Grossman the Washington Redskins will win the NFC East. It is a pretty interesting statement from a former first round draft pick of the Chicago Bears, and a guy on his third NFL team. Delusion is always rampant when we talk about the Redskins like one of the Shanahan’s saying John Beck should have been the 10th overall pick, and Daniel Snyder’s free agent signings are going to work out. To put it simply this team is going nowhere, not that they haven’t improved but they simply still cannot compete with the Philadelphia Eagles, or New York Giants. I would hardly call beating up on the Dallas Cowboys the same as winning a division, but that will make a lot of people smile.

As you can tell I think the Washington Redskins are a poor excuse for a NFL club. For the most part I blame their owner who has never been able to turn his never ending wallet into anything resembling on the field success. When I look over what they have done since free agency started, I see them spending a lot of money on average players. Maybe they will catch lightning in the bottle, but I kind of doubt it.

They did pick up a couple of sixth round picks for QB Donovan McNabb, and a 2013 fifth round pick for Albert Haynesworth. Rex, tell me exactly how much of Snyder’s money did Albert leave town with? Not that it mattes much anymore, but that has got to be one of the worst contracts ever signed by any sports team, EVER.

When I look at the Washington Redskins schedule I do not see the ten or eleven wins it will take for them to secure a divisional title. Right now I see three games they should win, maybe another three they could win, and ten that look like sure losses. That will not win a division or even get this team to be respected. By the way, a big shout out to my boy Mario and the 6-11 crew for sending me this story.

The Redskins landed their fourth receiver this off-season and this time it’s a veteran – not Santonio Holmes.

After drafting three receivers earlier this April and confirming they will re-sign Santana Moss this Friday, Washington has agreed to a one-year contract with free agent Donte Stallworth.

Stallworth, who was suspended for the entire 2009 season after pleading guilty to felony DUI manslaughter, came back in 2010 and recorded two catches in eight games for the Baltimore Ravens. Although Stallworth broke his foot in the 2010 preseason, he returned and eventually went on to win the Ravens’ Ed Block Courage Award.

Regarding the deal with the Redskins, Stallworth told Scout.com:

“It will be fun. I know Santana Moss, too. It will be a good chance for me to do some things. It’s a good opportunity I’m definitely excited for the opportunity. The coaches talked to be, both Shanahans. “I’m hearing from both Shanahans that I would have an opportunity to work my way in and do some good things with the offense. I’m not asking for a handout. I just want to show what I can do.”

Do you think the Stallworth/Moss combo will help the Redskins‘ offense?

The Washington Redskins added 12 players to their team via the NFL draft, so one would think the evaluation of those players would be the top priority. However, the Redskins did not add a QB to the mix. Donovan McNabb will not return, and Rex Grossman and John Beck are not adequate replacements. Beyond the fact that both are due to become free agents. To further compound their problem they have six free agents to be running backs to sort out. Luckily, Ryan Torian is not one of them. This is a team that is going to look very different, very soon.

The Redskins drafted three WR prospects to help restock their WR corps. Even if they resign Santana Moss, his days as a number one receiver are fading. Other than all of that, the offense is what it is a group of younger players (for the most part) that needs to find its way. They need training camp to start sooner rather than later as they have a lot of things to sort out.

To be blunt, this is a rebuilding team that is searching for a new core of young players to build around. Exactly how long that takes, will largely determine how fast they can return to respectability. They are doing in the right way by trading down in the NFL draft and picking up extra picks. I am a big fan of the wide net strategy used by teams in this exact situation. I would expect, given enough time, for the Redskins to bring in a ton of unsigned free agents to find a few diamonds in the rough.

The Tennessee Titans made a very risky move in the 2011 NFL draft by taking Jake Locker with the eighth overall pick. Jake needs time to develop, but by using, the eighth overall pick on him the Titans will feel a lot of pressure to start him from day one. It is a move that could cost their new head coach and General Manger their jobs down the road. If I were them, damn the fines, I would be doing all I could to insure Locker will starts his development now. Other than that, they did a very nice job of addressing their other needs via the draft.

The first need I see post draft for this team is at running back. They need a bigger back to compliment what Chris Johnson can do. They do have Javon Ringer and 2011 fourth round pick Jamie Harper, but there is some concern they are not exactly what this team needs. The rest of the offensive skill positions seem set, but there are some concerns at guard. They have some in house options to repalce pending free agents, but they may look for an upgrade via free agency.

While the Titans did draft two DT prospects in the draft, they feel like depth picks. The Titans D line got pushed around last year, and they need to get bigger and nastier there. If one of the prospects steps up, they might still need to look for a free agency upgrade. Other than that, the defense returns, but this is a rebuilding team that may choose to severely turnover their roster.

It seems a little ridiculous to ask, but after 12 years in the NFL (11 ok years with the Philadelphia Eagles and a disastrous 2010 season with the Washington Redskins) has QB Donovan McNabb reached the end of the road? I am sure he and his agent would say no, but I got to think the NFL is a young man’s game and I can’t see a team currently ready to pay McNabb big time money wit ha guarantee to be teh starting QB.

Beyond his age, McNabb is not exactly a premier QB, maybe he never was, but now he definitely is not. There have been a lot of rumors and speculation about McNabb’s ability to lead a team on the field and command respect in the locker room. Now come reports that he would not wear a wristband coach while playing in Washington last year over fear that it would hurt his reputation. It seems absurd that a guy on a new team and system would not want a helpful reminder of the plays he is suppose to be calling.

I don’t think the Washington Redskins want McNabb and that he never really fit in very good with Head Coach Mike Shanahan. There seems to be little doubt he will be dumped once the NFL gets back to business, but is there a team out there that would want him? Maybe the Arizona Cardinals but they seem ready to make a big play for Kevin Kolb.

The Vikings may have veteran QBitis, after the Bret Favre debacle and beyond that I don’t see a team ready to take a risk on McNabb. He will cost too much, and may not be the best guy to have in a young locker room. Maybe he could go play in the UFL once all 32 NFL teams take a polite pass.

The Washington Redskins draft is technically run by General Manager Bruce Allen, but Head Coach Mike Shanahan has the final say on all personnel decisions. The two likely sit down together to make all the final decisions. This will be the second draft of the Allen-Shanahan regime and the first one left something to be desired. Even if we count Donovan McNabb as this team’s second round pick the 2010 class was way below average. This team simply must do a better job on draft day.

Allen comes to the Redskins after stints with the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While GM of Tampa Bay he led a youth movement that had very mixed results. They did win two NFC South division titles while he was there, but as a whole the group underperformed and after a 9-7 2008 season he was let go.

Mike Shanahan on the other hand has a long history with the Denver Broncos having final say over personnel decisions. For the most part he does a very good job of finding guys who fit his system, guys like 2010 first round draft pick Trent Williams, but also has had his share of draft day misses.

Coming off a 6-10 season the Redskins need to deliver a strong draft class to keep their rebuilding effort moving. I would expect them to draft a QB early and then look for offensive linemen that fit Shanahan’s zone blocking scheme in the middle rounds.

I have got to say that the first draft of the Mike Shanahan era of the Washington Redskins was a total and complete disaster. A year ago I was not sold on what this team did in the draft, and as the 2010 season played out I was simply proven right. Even if we count Donovan McNabb as this tam’s second round pick they would still get a failing grade because of the unsure way in which he operated teh Redskin offense. Simply put this is the first bad draft class of 2010.

A quick look at the 2010 Redskins draft class:

Round One- OT Trent Williams

Round Four- LB Perry Riley

Round Six- FB Dennis Morris

Round Seven- WR Terrence Austin

Round Seven- C Erik Cook

Round Seven- OT Selvish Capers

So Trent Williams stepped in and started from day one and did a good job, of all these picks he is clearly among the best. I think one day he will be a stud, and hold down the Redskin O Line. In fact the Redskins got more production out of the undrafted free agents they signed then the picks they made. That is a recipe for disaster, and we saw that disaster play out over the course of the 2010 season.

Even with counting McNabb as their second round pick and Jeremy Jarmon as their third round pick this is a failing raft class. Bad teams cannot afford to waste picks or trade them away for veterans who have spotty records. The trades did not work, and the draft picks did not produce much.

The 2009 Draft class of the Washington Redskins is really all about one player, Brian Orakpo, because the wasted the rest of their picks. Granted one year after this draft the Redskins had a regime change, but that does not take away teh fact that the 2009 draft class only delivered one player.

Here is a quick look at the picks made by the Redskins in 2009:

Round One (13)- Brian Orakpo LB/DE

Round Three (80)- Kevin Barnes CB

Round Five (158)- Cody Glenn LB

Round Six (186)- Robert Henderson LB

Round Seven (221)- Eddie Williams TE/FB

Round Seven (243)- Marko Mitchell WR

So Brian Orakpo has been pretty good. He has racked up 20 sacks in two season and that makes him a force on the 34 defense employed by this team. CB Kevin Barnes has played some but has not been anything special. Cody Glenn is now with the Indianapolis Colts, and Robert Henson has only played in six games.

Each year it gets harder and harder to say that Orakpo can save this draft. The reality here is teams need to get more from their allotment of draft picks each year, but it seems clear Orakpo was a fine draft pick. In the end they just didn’t get enough from the other picks, and that seems to indicate that those players should not have been selected.

Yet another 6-10 team and the real story here is how Mike Shanahan and Kyle Shanahan choose to treat their players. Of course since Daniel Snyder made the decision to bring them him we automatically assume that it was the wrong decision. Sure the team got a little better, but it seems the players of today have tired of the way the Shanahan’s treat them. Other than that this team still has issues on teh offense and on the defense.

The offense was able to score just 302 points or 18.9 points per game on average. That was good enough for 25th among the 32 NFL teams. Without question QB Donovan McNabb had a rough year, he threw for 14 TD’s and 15 INT’s. Not good, not good at all. I think these issue may lie on the O line as they only average 91.3 rushing yards per game, and they did give up 47 sacks to their two QB’s.

The defense gave up 377 points, or on average 23.6 points per game. They were -4 in take away differential and some of that is due to poor QB play. They did force 19 fumbles, and pick off 14 passes. However on average they were giving up over 127 rushing yards per game, and 27 yards through the air. Simply put that is not good enough.

It is an interesting time for the Redskins. They have holes that need to be filled, a locker room cancer to get rid off and they seem hell bent on ridding themselves of a QB they no longer want. That means they are really creating another need. They need new O linemen, playmakers at the Wide Out position and a franchise QB. That is a lot to do in one off season.

The Washington Redskins are still a mess, and it looks like they no longer would like to have Donovan McNabb as their starting QB and it also looks like McNabb would like to pick the team he finishes his career with. He has asked for his release and it looks like the Redskins will decline that since they did spend a 2nd and a 4th round pick to get him. He still has trade value and that means the Redskins will likely decide where he winds up.

The team could release him, and as a contract option to do just that, but in all reality McNabb is a business asset and the team should not release him, even though that would be the right and ethical thing to do. McNabb should get to decide where he finishes his career, and he may get the chance to do so, but it will be on the Redskins terms and they will have to get something in return for him.

Complicating this matter was the contract extension McNabb and the team signed during the season. He has a 10 million dollar option bonus that a new team would likely have to pick up. Of course the good news in that is there are a number of teams out there that may be willing to pay that money and surrender a second round draft pick to secure Donovan for his final years in the league.

McNabb’s contract is worth 78 million dollars over the next five years, I could likely see the Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers, or the Tennessee Titans willing to pay that out and give up something to the Redskins to get a deal done.

Washington Redskins’ owner Daniel Snyder never met a problem he didn’t feel like throwing some money at. It seems that is the case with the reported five year 70 million dollar contract extension for QB Daunte Culpepper. Really this move is being made right now because Head Coach Mike Shanahan so badly handled the benching of his QB that something had to be done to show Donovan and the rest of the NFL a little good will. So yes technically Daunte got a five year deal worth between 70-78 million, with around 40 million guaranteed.

Now the folks that are in charge of the Redskins are smarter than they have been, because this contract has an out clause. If the Redskins decide to cut McNabb in 2011, they would be free of the deal entirely. So McNabb gets 3.5 million now, and an incentive to play well to get the rest of his money later. Really it is a genius move on the hands of an organization that has given out far too many over priced contracts.

So the Redskins get to stomp out a QB controversy, and get past the benching on Halloween day. They get to say they are committed to McNabb long term, even if they have not. Donovan himself gets a little extra jack in his pocket and the possibility of moving on after the season to a team like say the Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings or other such team looking for a QB.

Let us start this by saying that I don’t expect very much from this team in 2010. They are in the first year of a massive rebuilding effort, and a sea change in how they operate as a football team and organization. On top of that the Albert Haynesworth situation ahs been turned into a fiasco by Haynesworth himself. Put it like this a 47 year old ex-NFL player and current ESPN host completed the conditioning test the Redskins want Albert to pass. It is an embarrassment of the highest order that a professional athlete cannot, hurt knee or not.

So Donovan McNabb steps in to run the Redskin offense, and I don’t think we have a good read on what kind of offense it will be. Mike Shanahan as led some pretty good running offenses in his day, but I don’t know if the Skins have the personnel to do that yet. I suspect they will score a lot of points though, and make improvements on the on the field product of this team.

The defense will run a base 3-4 scheme, and that is the start of the problems with Haynesworth. He does not want to be a nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme and is not athletic enough to play end. It is a no win situation. I don’t know who will lead the defense with the absence of Haynesworth or if he has lost his teammates over all this nonsense. Brian Orakpo is a likely candidate, but this defensive unit needs a lot of work.

The Special Teams unit of this team also ahs a lot of questions. Punt and kick returner position battles will take place over their training camp. This team also faces a position battle at kicker, with only Punter Josh Bidwell having secured one of the four specialist jobs on this team.

Albert Haynesworth has no desire to be the Nose Tackle in a 3-4 defense, and since Mike Shanahan came to town to run the Washington Redskins it seems that is what the team will use as their base defense. Now the two sides are locked in a fight over weather or not the team and player should continue their relationship. Complicating all of this is a 21 million dollar bonus that was paid to Haynesworth on April first.

It seems that the team told Albert that he may pursue a trade up until that point, the point being where he accepted the 21 million dollar bonus. It seemed then the team expected him to become a fully participating member of the team. that has not happened, and even though he has been absent for most of the off season workouts, he has promised to report to Training Camp. However it does not look like he will still be a Washington Redskin at that time.

Now it seems that the two sides are at a stand still. The team can not get equal value for the player on the trade market, and at this point there seems to be few teams who would want to take on this overpaid, irritable player. Haynesworth has continually destroyed his reputation over the last few seasons, and he may have to do something very drastic to get out of Washington. Of course the team at this point might as well cut him, cut their loses and move on with their building plan. Sure the 30 million Haynesworth has made in his 16 month Redskins career is a lot of money, but I am sure Owner Daniel Snyder can cover it.

An exotic dancer from Brooklyn is suing Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, filing a paternity suit after she claims the player knocked her up and abandoned her.

25-year-old Silvia Mena says she told the NFL star she was expecting in late February, and that by late March, he’d left her alone to deal with the pregnancy. Haynesworth, who signed a $100m contract late last year with the NFL, is alleged to have suggested Mena visit a “NFL doctor” during her pregnancy- but the dancer feared “some effort might be made to purposefully make her lose the child.” Mena said that aside from that, Haynesworth has not moved to support her or assist with medical bills since learning of her condition:

She claims in the documents that after learning about the pregnancy, Haynesworth promised to “emotionally and financially support Silvia.” But, “after making such promises . . . Haynesworth has abandoned the pregnant Sylvia Mena . . . He has refused to provide any emotional or financial support of Silvia Mena or his unborn child.”

Mena’s lawyer, Salvatore Strazzullo, says his client has had to obtain Medicaid to deal with expenses related to the pregnancy. Haynesworth’s agent declined comment on the allegations.

I am not very sold on what this team did in this draft. Sure we have to consider that they used their second round pick to trade for QB Donovan McNabb, but I am not sold on that move either. I see this has a big recipe for failure. It is going to take t his team a lot longer to rebuild and they will have to do a better job in the draft then this to expedite the process. They failed to address their needs outside offensive lineman, and I don’t see how the offense is going to work even with McNabb at the helm.

In the first round, they took Trent Williams and that was a no brainer, the Skins O line in 2009 was as bad as a NFL O line could be. They added bodies to the mix in round seven, and I actually like those moves. In the 4th round they took LB Perry Riley since they will need bodies to fill out their new 3-4 defense. However Riley seems like a depth player to me, not a guy who is going to come in and make an immediate impact. Their other picks don’t seem to make a heck of a lot of sense given the needs of this club. While I understand in can all not be fixed in one draft, it doesn’t appear anything outside the O line was addressed in this draft.

Here is their grade broken down:

•Talent- B-, Selvish Capers was a steal in the seventh round
•Need- B-, They addressed the O line, but not much else
•Round One- B-, he is a kid that has motivation problems, that is risky
•Average- B-, I am being very generous with this one, but I could be wrong.

The Redskins scored with the 13th overall pick when there got LB Brian Orakpo, and they are lucky they did because the rest of this draft class did next to nothing. A year ago I was critical of the decisions made by this front office, a year later they shot callers are gone and a new regime is in town. Orakpo made the pro bowl and should be a fixture on the Redskins defense for years to come. Other than that they spent five draft picks on nothing. That goes to show that NFL executives must do well on draft day or risk losing their jobs later.

A quick look at the 2009 Redskins draft class:

Round One (13)- Brian Orakpo LB/DE

Round Three (80)- Kevin Barnes CB

Round Five (158)- Cody Glenn LB

Round Six (186)- Robert Henderson LB

Round Seven (221)- Eddie Williams TE/FB

Round Seven (243)- Marko Mitchell WR

So Orakpo makes the pro bowl, Barnes is a healthy scratch for 12 games, Glenn was cut in training camp and ended up playing nine games with the Indianapolis Colts, Henson made two tackles in six games, Williams was on the practice squad then broke his leg, and Marko played in 10 games and made four catches.

Sure, final draft day grade don’t come for about five years into a players career, but this is a pretty bad draft class by any standards. Orakpo saves it from being a failed draft, but this isn’t much better than a solid D.
