If you don’t mind spending $249 on a special edition device (that’s rather cheap for a limited edition smartphone), then you might want to check out the Verizon Droid 2 R2-D2 Edition set to arrive at Verizon on September 30.

The $249 price comes after a $100 mail-in rebate and a 2-year contract. For that price you get a Star Wars themed dock and a box that’s made to look like carbonite. You’ll also notice various licensed wallpapers, sounds, photos, widgets and a “binoculars app” which has yet to be fully revealed.

After making a splash with its IDon’t ads yesterday, the release date for the Verizon/ Motorola Droid has been decoded, and it’s apparently sitting on the front page of the DroidDoes site.

According to reports, the “countdown” clock at the bottom of the DroidDoes site decodes to a Droid release date of October 30, just in time for Thanksgiving and the Christmas sales rush.

Since the first ad went to air Sunday, buzz around the Motorola Droid has continued to spread online, with many looking for pictures as details. It’s easy to be skeptical as to whether the Droid will be an iPhone killer, but credit where due: Verizon has got the buzz factor leading up to the launch pumping.

For Verizon Motorola Droid details see: Verizon Droid specs and Verizon Motorola Droid pictures.

As we covered earlier, the new ad is out for the Verizon Droid, but the ad lacks one feature: actual Verizon Droid pictures.

The Verizon Droid started its naming cycle as the Motorola Sholes/Tao, and some pictures do exist of the phone, be it possibly in testing versions. The pictures show the obvious things like the slideout keyboard, but they also show an iPhone sized phone with a screen to match.

The first Verizon Droid picture above shows Droid possibly running Android 1.6 vs the Android 2.0 it will ship with. The pictures below (one via BGR) clearly show Android 2.0 running on the phone. The last picture we’re not sure: the buttons at the base don’t match the other shots, meaning that it could be a prototype or artist rendering. However, the keyboard layout seems correct.

The latest challenger to the iPhone is the Verizon Droid, and if you believe the new teaser commercial aired over the weekend, it’s even better than the jesus phone.

The Verizon Droid is a Motorola handset developed in conjunction with Google. Running Google’s Android 2.0 operating system, the Droid does a range of things that iPhone doesn’t according to the ad, including offering a physical keyboard, multitasking, a five-megapixel camera, widgets, “open development,” a removable battery and more.

Android 2.0 is the first major upgrade for Google’s mobile operating system, and from leaked shots appearing online it finally gets some decent built in visuals. It’s not clear from the ad as to whether Verizon is going to offer its own customization version of Android, where as other manufactures, including HTC and notably Motorola have previously offered customized Android installs.

Also benefiting from the phone is George Lucas, with the ad noting that the name Droid is licensed from Lucasfilm.

The Verizon Droid ad as follows, and the Verizon Droid teaser website (which offers the ad and not much else) here.
