Utterli, the microblogging/ rich media sharing platform formerly know Utterz has released an official Adobe AIR desktop client.

The new client includes the ability to view Utterz, including audio and video playback, reply inline and browse groups. Visually it’s pleasing, taking up the new colors from the site for a nice look. But that’s where the positives end, because Utterli tries to be too clever by half, and the user experience lacks as a consequence.

The timeline in the Utterli AIR application adopts a Plurk like horizontal timeline, but instead of including entries, only includes user pics. To view each entry involves having to click on it, so casual browsing is immediately ruled out. The key selling point of Utterli other over platforms is completely ignored in the application: you can leave a text Utter, but you can’t record audio or video from the app, further cripling the use case.

I love Utterli as a service, although I haven’t been using it much lately (nor a number of other services), the combination of video and audio, including the ability to phone in entries via a local number makes Utterli stand out from the crowd. I’ve heard it regularly being mentioned alongside Twitter as a corporate tool (and I’ve mentioned it myself in this context) due to the flexibility the input side offers, and despite strong competition, Utterli has a good chance of going the distance. But they’ve dropped the ball here with the app. I understand the need to offer something on the desktop, but this could be a case where Utterli would have been better holding back till they could offer something better.

Posterous is a Tumblr style microblogging platform that defines itself through a perhaps unlikely angle: strong support for email posting.

The Y Combinator startup is all about ease of use. To use, send your post to post@posterous.com. That’s it, and you can include files, pictures, audio, video and text. Just remember to crop your email signature prior to sending otherwise that gets published as well. You don’t have to register either to start posting, the service generates an automatic URL for you based on your email address. If you want a custom URL, or want to edit your post, you do have to register, but the only two things you have to fill in are email address and password (and password only once).

Michele Martin at Bamboo Project notes that you could use a Posterous blog for a one-sentence professional journal, to share conference sessions as they happen, to send photos or video of an off-site event or problem or to “use it as your back-up brain.”

Off the bat it’s an appealing, well thought out service, that is insanely simple to use. Many might argue that email is dead (and it is for younger people) but this is so easy my mother could use it without any instructions. The flip side: crowded space, established players. I’ve started using Utterz and Tumblr recently to deliver some similar to what Posterous does, although Posterous doesn’t do phone call recording unfortunately.

I know I’m often happy to recommend sites for people to check out, but check this one out by sending an email to post@posterous.com so you can marvel, at least briefly, in the pure simplicity the folks behind this have come up with.

Utterz, best known as an audio messaging platform has been thrust back on the microblogging radar today with news that the site now supports Twitter like direct messaging features.

Kristen Nicole at Mashable headlines the changes as “New Utterz Features to take on Twitter?” and notes new features such as “Utterz messages directly to friends using the “@” symbol, personal URLs, and peer-to-peer SMS notifications.”

Until today I’ve never used the service, so I signed up and gave it a shot. My first impressions, plus a quick walk through in the video above. It’s an interesting platform in that Utterz mashes concepts we are familiar with on services such as Twitter and Seesmic and marries them on the one site. As a convenient, multi-media capturing service it’s good value. As a direct competitor to Twitter…I’m not so sure. The site still lacks a huge community, the magical ingredient that makes or breaks any service in the microblogging space. There are plenty of cross-overs with and into Twitter and other platforms however, and as a stand alone value add its a stronger proposition.

An audio embed below, with a correction to the screencast (I wasn’t sure about length when I recorded it), max recording time in 10 minutes.
