In perhaps one of the most unlikely results in world soccer in recent years, the United States has beaten Spain 2-0 to progress to the final of the Confederations Cup.

The victory is even more remarkable given Spain is currently ranked the number one team in the world, and entered the match on a 35 game winning streak, tied for the longest in FIFA’s history.

Team USA struggled in the earlier stages of the competition, losing opening matches 3-1 to Italy and 3-0 to Brazil, andb only managed to scrape into the semi-final on goal difference after defeating Egypt 3-0 in their final group match.

Against Spain, the United States went one up in the first half off a goal from Jozy Altidore, then held off an at times desperate Spanish attack to go 2-0 up in the 74th minute with a goal from Clint Dempsey.

The Americans play the winner of Thursday night’s semi-final between Brazil and South Africa Sunday night.
