Novak Djokovic was nearly flawless on Monday night as he toppled Rafael Nadal in four sets  6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-1.

Following a nearly perfect season the No. 1-ranked Djokovic improved his season to 64-2 with 10 titles after brilliantly hitting the ball from all angles, dominating his opponent at every turn during the 2011 U.S. Open.

The win gives Djokovic his third Grand Slam trophy of 2011.

Speaking after the match Novak told the press:

“In big matches, the winner is decided by small margins, a couple points,” while adding, “I guess the winner is the one who believes in victory more. I’ve had an amazing year, and it keeps going.”

The win also gives Djokovic a 6-0 record against No. 2 Nadal, all wins coming in finals. Among his wins against Nadal were three hard court victories, two clay wins and one grass victory at Wimbledon. Unlike his win at Wimbledon Novak didn’t celebrate this victory by eating part of the court as he did Wimbledon’s famous grass.

Taking a moment to reflect on his loss Nadal said of Djokovic:

“I’m disappointed, but you know what—this guy is doing is unbelievable.”

As actress Brooklyn Decker stayed on hand to cheer on husband Andy Roddick as he played Rafael Nadal in a quarterfinal match at the US Open in Queens, the balmy pre-autumnal weather belied a more somber tone in the area.

Sunday marks the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks, when more than 2,000 people were killed just miles away at the site of the World Trade Center. In advance of the anniversary, security has been stepped up visibly throughout New York’s five boroughs- especially at high profile events like the US Open.

In addition to the large event being held so close to the date, First Lady Michelle Obama was in attendance for some of the matches, undoubtedly increasing security concerns. Decker spoke about witnessing the enhanced security at the match, updating her Twitter feed from the event. She said:

“A bit of a shift in mood at the Open today… Officers in helmets carrying fully automatic weapons. Good to see they’re taking precaution.”

Prior to the match, Decker attended Fashion’s Night Out, a fundraiser for Justin Bieber’s pencils for promise. The previous night’s party also rated a mention on Decker’s Twitter account, and the actress commented:

Decker and Roddick got hitched back in April of 2009, and her husband has been tweeting about the US Open as well. Recently, he re-tweeted the comments of a fan that were not exactly favorable:

Maria Sharapova put up a fight but ultimately fell to Flavia Penneta during this weekends US Open play. The third seed Sharapova lost in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-4) at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 2006 U.S Open Champion who was second favorite to win the tournament lost after giving up 12 double faults and 60 unforced errors.

In 2011 Penneta has been ranked as high as 10th and she also won the pairings last match when they met two years ago in Los Angeles.

Pennetta now progresses to a fourth-round meeting with Peng Shuai.

Still in the running at the tournament is second seed Vera Zvonareva who survived three sets against Kateryna Bondarenko on Wednesday and then won in straight sets against Anabel Medina Garrigues (6-4, 7-5).

Venus Williams was forced out of the tournament this week after revealing a diagnosis of Sjögren’s syndrome an auto-immune deficiency which leaves the body feeling exhausted.

On the men’s side of the tournament Juan Martin Del Potro  took three straight sets over Diego Junqueira (6-2, 6-1, 7-5).

In a tournament known for upsets and comebacks it will be interesting to see how the competition stacks up during fourth round play.

Rory McIlroy was unwavering during U.S. Open play this week, shooting a two-under 69 at Congressional on his final day of play to end the tournament with a 16-under 268.

While his 16-under 8-shot win is impressive by any standard it becomes even more impressive when we realize that he beat the old US Open scoring record by four shots, surpassing four golfers including golf greats Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Throughout the entire tournament McIlroy’s performance was compared to Woods and his 15-shot blowout at Pebble Beach in 2000.

McIlroy said after the match:

“I was trying to go out there today and emulate him in some way,” while adding, “I played great for four days and I couldn’t be happier.”

After his win he met his father Gerry McIlroy just off the green and said, “Happy Father’s Day” the perfect way to end an amazing four rounds of golf.

Tennis is hardly known for its brawls, and rightly so. But that doesn’t mean the crowd can’t make up for the players on center court.

At the US Open September 2 during the Djokovic vs. Petzschner game, a couple of tennis fans did exactly that. We’re not sure what was being said or what the issue was, but sit through it until about half way in, when the old guy on the right decides to take it further.

In case you were interested in the on court result, Djokovic won 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (8/6).

You can chill out with the live streaming searches, people- the US Open has been suspended due to excessive rain up in here.

The tennis ping-pong golf tournament, which happens to be going down two towns over from me (holla!) has been rained out for the time being. And if the preceding weeks are any indication, there’s no end in sight. Also, rain is predicted through the weekend. (Burn!)

Play was officially suspended at 10:16am local time due to “torrential rains” and 20mph winds. Reporting that many holes looked “like a swamp,” Golf.com quoted USGA’s David Fay:

“We’ve reached the breaking point… There’s too much water accumulating on the greens, the heavy rain is coming and is likely to be here for about an hour, and we thought it was prudent to suspend play… Mother Nature is a little irritated.”

Fay indicated hope that the break would last an hour or so, but judging by the way it’s coming down, that’s a very idealistic time frame.
