Visitors to the CBS.com website earlier today were met with nothing, that’s because the hacktivist group Anonymous managed to not only perform a DDoS attack on the network but actually hack the company’s website and delete all files.

Fortunately for CBS a backup was made for obvious (hacking) reasons and the company responded quickly by replacing the deleted website with all original files.

Visitors for a short period of time were met with an index page found within a single file and nothing more.

Attacked a short time afterwards was UniversalMusic.com which was also quickly restored from a backup and continued business as usual.

Anonymous has been attacking various industry websites since the take down of MegaUpload by Federal authorities. Sites attacked have included the DOJ, RIAA, MPAA, Universal, EMI, FBI and various other industry websites the hacking initiative believes has wronged their own personal choices.

In the meantime the actual hacking and deletion of a website falls squarely in new territory for Anonymous and showcases the groups efforts to more severely punish any corporate interests that infringe of their ability to download and stream illegal copies of copyrighted material.

Released on September 24, 1991, Nevermind catapulted the band – comprised of drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain – and its music to the top of the charts, with songs including “Smells Like Teen Spirit” giving birth to the Seattle-based grunge musical style.

Despite the bands colossal public exposure and fame stemming from the album’s success, front-man Cobain suffered rejection from the punk-rock world he came from, which saw Nirvana’s sudden fame and fortune as a betrayal of its roots.

Overwhelmed by depression, Cobain took his life on April 5, 1994, by shooting himself in the head.

Surviving band members, Novoselic and now Foo Fighters front man  Grohl, as well as its producer Butch Vig still hold the album as the defining moment of their careers.

“It was exactly like I hoped it would be. It’s a real simple record. A drum set, a bass, a couple of guitar overdubs and a vocal that’s doubled. That’s it,” Contactmusic quoted the album’s drummer Grohl as saying.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Nevermind, which, according to MTV.com, has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, Universal is re-issuing the remastered album Tuesday (Sept. 27) with various special editions.

Bonus material on the Deluxe edition includes obscure B-sides, alternate mixes, live recordings and video of the band’s 1991 Halloween concert at Seattle’s Paramount Theater.

Meebo will begin offering ad-supported videos from UMG artists such as Kanye West, Ludacris, and The Killers on its site. The artists will use the platform to promote new and upcoming albums.

In the meantime, UMG will begin integrating Meebo’s chat rooms into the artist’s official Web sites. UMG has previously embedded Meebo Rooms for specific events like listening parties. This will mark the first time, though, the services will be intertwined in such a broad fashion.

This is just the latest in a string of UMG content-sharing partnerships. The label signed a deal with teen social networking site Kiwibox in October that brought thousands of its videos to the site in an ad-supported manner, with artists keeping part of the revenue.

As for Meebo, it has been around for just over three years. It claims 40 million users at its meebo.com chat site alone, not counting various partnerships and third-party implementations.
