Mysterious blue balls have fallen from the sky. Steve Hornsby, a 61 year old from the UK said that the sky went yellow and a storm broke out over his home. The strange blue jelly balls started falling from the sky landing all over his back yard.

Hornsby tried to pick one up and he noticed it had a strange jelly like feel to it, so much so that it barely held its shape. Horsnby thinks that it is a type of atmospheric pollution that caused the falling blue balls. Some scientists who have seen them think that they may be some type of egg that was left in the ocean and picked up by surging storm clouds (although there is no embryos in them).

Hornsby said,

“It’s the most peculiar thing I have ever seen – there must be about 20 complete spheres. They don’t smell and they don’t float. I’ve been an aircraft engineer for many years and I’ve never seen anything like it.”

There are many United Kingdom scientists who are trying to figure out what they are. Some theories include:

sodium polyacrylate crystals used in floral displays

toy gun pellets

Bird Eggs

The only problem is that none of these theories really makes complete sense. Also, no one can explain how they got in the sky to begin with.

Would you be completely freaked out to see blue jelly balls falling from the sky?

O2, a leading provider of mobiles phones and broadband in the UK, accidentally revealed mobile phone numbers on websites that their customers accessed. This was a rather big flaw and definitely not good for all the customers who surf and browse the web on their phones.

The flaw was found by Lewis Peckover, a web systems administrator during an experiment. He showed that the company was sharing customer’s phone numbers with websites that were displayed as plain text in their header information.

With this happening, website owners could have had the ability to take their phone numbers and then spam them through text messages or telemarketing.

Via Telegraph:

“O2 admitted that the problem began on January 10th and said it was the “unintended effect” of some routine maintenance that the network carried out earlier this month. They said the issue was fixed this afternoon. In a statement, the company said: “We investigated, identified and fixed it this afternoon. We would like to apologise for the concern we have caused.” The company added: “The only information websites had access to is your mobile number, which could not have been linked to any other identifying information we have about customers.”

So, the company knew about the problem, just not the extent of the problem. Or did they and just not worry about fixing it? Either way, the flaw is fixed and customers don’t have to worry about their mobile phone numbers being taken and used to spam them.

Do you think O2 should issue an individual apology to customers?

Last week, news that changes to the diagnostic criteria for autism could cut the number of diagnoses was met with a mixed reaction, and many were concerned that those affected by the changes might go without much needed services to manage the condition.

This week, research has emerged that some simple tools could be effective in dealing with autism when implemented at an early age. One of the differences between thought processes in people with autism has to do with visual thinking versus thinking “in words,” and encouraging children at crucial educational stages to “talk things through” in words could help many deal with the effects of autism even as adults, research reveals.

The new data comes from a study in the UK, and British researchers found that while the ability to process thoughts in words exists, many autistic children “don’t always use it in the same way as typically developing people do.” Durham University’s department of psychology lead the study, and researcher David Williams commented on the findings:

“Most people will ‘think in words’ when trying to solve problems, which helps with planning or particularly complicated tasks… Children with autism probably aren’t doing this thinking in their heads, but are continuing on with a visual thinking strategy… So this is the time, at around six or seven years old, that these teaching methods would be most helpful.”

The study was published in this month’s Development and Psychopathology Journal, and was conducted at Durham, Bristol and City University London. 15 adults with high-functioning autism and 16 neurotypical adults participated.

In a 2006 documentary produced out of Moscow, Russia a spying device believed to be from the United Kingdom was shown to the delight and laughter of audiences. The device was funny because spy officials in the UK actually believed they could place a bug inside a fake rock and nobody would notice.

In that footage Moscow officials kick the rock around in a park after it was discovered.

According to the Guardian officials in Britain have denied that the rock belongs to their agencies until recently when a former aide to Tony Blair told the BBC:

“The spy rock was embarrassing … they had us bang to rights.”

The aide goes on to note:

“There’s not much you can say, you can’t really call up and say, ‘I’m terribly sorry about that, it won’t happen again.’”

What might make the fake rock more embarrassing is the fact that it was possibly used against the UK. According to reports Russian President Vladimir Putin knew about the rock but kept it a secret so he could wait for the perfect moment to use the device as part of his crackdown initiative on the foreign-funded NGOs, allowing him to eventually increase his authoritarian power.

In fake the rock dispute was so bad according to Tony Brenton, the British ambassador to Moscow in 2006 that it marked a “dramatic disintegration of ties between London and Moscow.”

Perhaps the Brits should have stuck with pet rocks instead of turning them into objects of spying on the Russians.

Netflix has launched its streaming Internet video service in the United Kingdom and Ireland, in a move that could result in the company’s first quarterly loss in almost a decade.

Monthly subscriptions will cost £5.99 and €6.99 (both around $9) in the UK and Ireland respectively. Its main rival in Europe, Lovefilm, charges £4.99 and already has a readymade base of around 2 million subscribers on the continent.

Netflix has plenty of subscribers away from Europe – more than 20 million in the U.S. and a further 1.5 million outside the States – but it is a complete newcomer in Europe.

The company suffered a painful loss of almost a million customers last year when it introduced eye-watering price rises. The move saw Netflix quickly backpedal, though customers remained largely unimpressed. From mid-July to the end of 2011, Netflix’s value dropped by 75%

When combined with the earlier exodus of customers, the cost of Netflix’s expansion is anticipated to result in a loss when the firm reports its fourth-quarter earnings on January 25.

However, it would seem a recovery is underway. 2012 is still young, but Netflix shares have seen a resurgence, largely thanks to speculation that the company could receive a fat buyout offer.

Shares might not be anywhere near their July 2011 high of $305, but they have gained by $11.89, or nearly 14 percent, this year. They now stand at $98.18.

The South American country of Brazil has officially surpassed the United Kingdom as the world’s sixth largest economy according to a recent report.

The report was revealed by the BBC and shows traditional superpowers losing some of their grip on the world economy as countries in Latin America and Asia continue to build out their economic infrastructures.

While that news isn’t great for UK the Center for Economics and Business Research says the country is set to overtake France’s economy by 2016.

Speaking to the BBC a CEBR economist noted:

“I think it’s part of the big economic change, where not only are we seeing a shift from the west to the east, but we’re also seeing that countries that produce vital commodities—food and energy and things like that—are doing very well and they’re gradually climbing up the economic league table.”

Brazil has been helped along by a population of more than 200 million people, that’s approximately three times the size of the UK population.

Brazil was also helped by a 7.5% increase in spending last year, although the Brazilian government has cut 2011 forecasting to just 3.5% after the economy drastically slowed in the third quarter as the country much like other parts of the world dealt with a worsening economic situation in Europe and high interest rates that have slowed lending.

The same research study also released 2020 economic forecast for the Top 10 countries economically speaking:

Are you surprised to see where certain countries will rank when 2020 rolls around?

Earlier this year at IFA Samsung announced that their Smart TVs would soon receive support for YouTube videos in 3D and now that exclusive access (for the short term) has finally become a reality with the company rolling out YouTube 3D support.

Under YouTube’s current offerings Samsung Smart TV users will have access to more than 8000 videos shot in 3D and the company says they will be teaming up with YouTube to expand user options in the near future.

At this time it’s still unclear if Samsung plans to shoot various video clips in 3D or if they will convert old 2D YouTube clips into the 3D format in an attempt to grow out the 3D video brand.

At this time YouTube 3D videos can only be views in North America, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Samsung Smart TV users can gain support for the new YouTube 3D feature via a free update available through the company’s Smart TV app portal.

Would you like to watch YouTube videos in the 3D format from your TV?

Here’s something the women of Sex and the City would be proud of, the upscale and discreet Dukes Hotel in London have launched a special set of “Duchess Rooms” which specifically cater to single female travelers.

Assigned only to female travelers the “no men allowed” suits including feminine friendly additions including hair styling accessories, women’s only magazines and fresh flowers in every suite. The rooms also offer a make-up mirror and sewing kit.

According to AOL Travel:

Around the world, women-only rooms have been popping up aplenty. These include The Naumi Hotel in Singapore, the Premier Hotel in New York City, and Crowne Plaza hotels in Washington and Minnesota.

Women only hotel rooms may be gaining steam but they haven’t been without their own issues, a Danish judge recently ordered a hotel in Copenhagen to stop what they called a “discriminatory practice.” The Bella Sky hotel was ordered to end the practice after a male traveler complained to the country’s Equal Treatment Board.

For their part executives at the Bella Sky are refusing to back down, recently telling the AFP news service:

“The only man who can access this floor will be a fireman in case of fire.”

Do you think hotels should be able to choose what clientele they feature in exclusive rooms? Keep in mind the Bella Sky and the Dukes Hotel still allow men in their hotel, they just offer some rooms exclusively to single female occupants.

Meryl Streep’s performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady has seen critics run short of superlatives, but there’s one person it hasn’t impressed: Norman Tebbit, one of Thatcher’s staunchest supporters and a man who was a member of her party cabinet between 1981 and 1987.

The former Conservative party chairman and trade and industry secretary wasn’t just indifferent about Streep’s portrayal of the former prime minister; he seemed to actively dislike it. Writing in The Daily Telegraph, Tebbit pronounced:

“She was always open to persuasion, but only by argument and facts properly marshaled and presented, and she could be hard – perhaps at times unfairly so – on colleagues who failed her standards. However, she was never, in my experience, the half-hysterical, over-emotional, over-acting woman portrayed by Meryl Streep.”

Interestingly, Tebbit said the film’s director and screenwriter, Phyllida Lloyd and Abi Morgan, hadn’t asked him for advice:

“You might think that if you were setting out to make a so-called ‘biopic’ about such a dominant figure on the political stage of the late 20th century, your researchers would have sought out those who were closest to her in those years and asked them. I do not know whom the makers of the Meryl Streep film talked to. Perhaps Michael Heseltine or Geoffrey Howe, but certainly not me.”

Tebbit’s not the only one wearing crankypants. Former Thatcher PR adviser Tim Bell also had a bleat about the film, basically dismissing it as an irrelevance:

“I can’t be bothered to sensationalise this rubbish. Its only value is to make some money for Meryl Streep and whoever wrote it. I have no interest in seeing it. I don’t need a film to remind me of my experiences of her. It is a non-event.”

You’d have thought a Thatcherite like Bell would have related to cynically generating as much individual wealth as possible from the pockets of poorer people. Maybe he’s softened a bit.

The Iron Lady is released on December 30th in the U.S, and on January 6th, 2012. It is, inevitably, already being tipped for success at the Oscars.

Britney Spears doesn’t have the same pull she once had over fans during her world tours, at least that appears to be the case in the UK where her Birmingham concert slated for October 30 has failed to sell out or even come close to selling out.

While Spears would have had no problem selling out the 16,000 seat LG Arena in her early days one ticket seller says of the current ticket sales situation:

“It’s probably about half-full. There’s good availability.”

The lack of buyers comes after 500 standing tickets remain unsold and 11 entire seat blocks are still available even after promoters dropped ticket pricing from £30 down from £55 through social selling website Groupon.

Speaking about the Groupondeal concert promoter LiveNation said:

“Offering a deal on Groupon is not a reflection of the quality or status or sales of a show.”

Promoters haven’t even been able to give away tickets through their buy 10 get two free deal.

Called her “flashiest show” yet by Rolling Stone the Femme Fatale concert tour includes eight UK dates.

Would you be willing to purchase 10 Britney Spears tickets just to get two free? That deal seems more like a win for ticket brokers than fans who might want to attend the concert with 11 of their closest friends.

Christina Aguilera headed out to a bar in Cardiff, Wales after performing at the Michael Jackson tribute concert where she reportedly ran up an $8,000 bar tab.

The singer/actress went with her entourage to the St. David’s Hotel in Wales where she purchased rounds of alcohol all night for her friends. Aguilera also purchased dinner for her entire entourage which added to the overall bar tab.

Aguilera also hired a train carriage to get her and the entourage from London to Cardiff. A source told The Daily Mail:

“Christina just sat back and enjoyed the views.” That same source added, ”She had been told the countryside is beautiful and she just wanted to see it.”

“Her management hired half the carriage through a company called Train Chartering because she didn’t like the idea of a fleet of Bentleys sitting on the M4 for hours on end.”

The singers tab included chilled champagne, Belvedere vodka, Pinot Grigio, Fuji apples, a pot of honey, unsalted almonds and mineral water. The water was flown in from the South Pacific at the request and expense of Aguilera.

As if Christina Aguilera wasn’t already giving her entourage the royal treatment they were actually allowed to wait in the VIP lounge before boarding the train, the same lounge that is typically reserved for actual royal family members.

Do you think spending $8,000 on alcohol and food for a night out on the town is a bit excessive? I’m not saying she shouldn’t have done it but if I was dropping that much cash I would be shooting for higher shelf vodka than Belvedere.

Brits, Aussies, Canadians: prepare to gorge on cheap (or even free) e-books. Though it’s taken a while, Google’s E-book Store has finally made it to the UK, Australia, and Canada, after a period of US exclusivity.

That means those with a Kindle or an Android handset (an Android app is already available, though version 2.1 or later is required) can choose from millions of e-books, plenty of which are free public domain classics.

Here’s Google blowing its own trumpet:

“Readers in the UK now have access to the world’s largest e-books collection, with hundreds of thousands of e-books for sale – from major UK publishers like Hachette, Random House and Penguin – as well as more than two million public domain e-books for free.”

So there you go, yet another way to read books. If you head to the Android Marketplace now, you’ll see a ‘Books’ section has been added, alongside the usual ‘Apps’ and ‘Games’ icons.

The books should work on phones, tablets, laptops, and e-readers. I severely questions the point of reading a book on a tiny smartphone screen, but then I’m clinging on to paperbacks for as long as I can manage.

So, who in the UK, Oz, and Canada is spending the day downloading the whole of Shakespeare’s back catalog later today then never read it? Let us know in the comments!

Increased technological capabilities such as IT, mobile computing and social media are considered to be the most important skills by far for tomorrow’s global workforce.

This was the result of a survey conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and GEMS Education asking 400 business leaders from the US, UK, China and Brazil to rank the important skills for tomorrow’s global workforce. Thirty seven percent of the respondents agreed on IT skills as the most important.

The survey was published at the World Economic Forum’s “Summer Davos” in Dalian, China.

The second highest priority was considered to be deep technical skills (specialist knowledge of the business) with 20 percent of business leaders polled ranking it as the most important skill for tomorrow’s global workforce. Emerging economies attached more importance to this skill than did the more mature ones. In China, 20 percent of business leaders considered deep technical skills to be the most important skill and in Brazil 32 percent of business leaders considered it to be the most important skill. However in the US, only 13 percent of business leaders considered deep technical skills to be the most important skill. And in the UK only 15 percent considered it to be the most important skill.

Dr. Manny Rivera, Chief Executive Officer of GEMS’ US-based Global Partnership Schools, said:

“We invited business leaders to rank what they considered the most important in the future: technological capabilities, multilingual capabilities, deeper technical skills, cross-cultural networking skills, autonomous work habits or a higher aptitude for innovation. The GEMS Education survey shows clearly that American business leaders, as well as those from other corners of the world, prioritize IT skills above any other skills for their future workforce. Governments need to take note of business leaders’ view of skills more than ever as there is a global skills race that is only going to get more competitive.”

Business leaders were also asked which strategies they should adopt to ensure they have access to the most suitable employees in the future. Chinese business leaders are by far the most likely to want to recruit from abroad with 22 percent saying that recruiting from abroad would be the most effective way of accessing suitable employees of the future. However, only nine percent of Brazilians consider recruiting from abroad to be the most effective way of accessing the most suitable employees whilst only five percent of US and UK businesses leaders consider recruiting from abroad to be the most effective way of finding the most suitable employees.

How about you? Are your skills aligned with tomorrow’s global workforce?

Stella McCartney threw a carnival party at town hall in north London on Wednesday to celebrate her third in-house collection of children’s wear, a project she began working on after several seasons designing children’s clothing for retail outlet GAP.

In attendance was Kate Moss who spoke about “The Waltzer” a popular ride in the UK:

“The waltzer was my absolute favorite as a kid,” adding, “Up and down, round and round, and you scream if you want to go faster. It’s the best!”

Among other supporters in attendance were Laura Bailey, Avery and John Frieda, Camilla Al Fayed, and Bay Garnett.

The “British Fairground” theme went off with great success as McCartney walked around and met as many children as possible.

Speaking about bringing her collection “in-house” she said:

“Working with Gap was all part of the journey. Now, there are fewer limitations, and you get to be your own boss,” while adding, “I hope these clothes let kids express themselves and enjoy being kids.”

Stella McCartney also revealed to WWD that some of her adult designs have trickled down into her children’s wear:

“Not much trickles up from the kids’ collection, but there is a little Linda shoe – named after my mother – and a kids’ one. And sometimes I can even manage to squeeze myself into the size 12 tea dresses – I love them so much.”

I have to give it up to the designer, she definitely knows how to target her core demographic while making parents happy as well. Are you a fan of Stella McCartney’s children designs?

Photos of actress Heather Locklear are causing quite the stir on the internet this weekend after several pictures of the former Melrose Place star began to circulate and show off what some gossips are calling breast augmentation surgery.

The photos, which all feature Locklear in a low cut black dress during an Aug. 4 charity dinner in London, UK appear to show larger than normal breasts as she holds onto longtime boyfriend Jack Wagner at the Sameul L. Jackson led event.

Regardless of whether or not Locklear has in fact had breast enlarging surgery, it’s hard to not admit that at nearly 50-years-old (she turns 50 on Sept. 25) she looks amazing.

Locklear has never said she has had plastic surgery, although she also hasn’t ruled it out, during an interview on Live With Regis and Kelly in the earlier part of 2011 she said:

“I think [plastic surgery] is great,” while adding, ”Especially since I’m at an age now where all my friends talk about it… No one’s done it yet, but it’s all they talk about.”

“Sometimes I look at this,” she added, gesturing to her chin. “I think it would be scary, but hey, I’m not against it at all. At all.”

So what if she did have breast enlargement surgery, she’s nearly 50 years old yet I know plenty of guys much younger than her who still think Heather Locklear is a bombshell. At least unlike some Hollywood stars she has admitted that she’s thought about it, whether or not she has surgery is her own choice, but honestly I don’t think she needs it.

Many of the so-called pirate site owners believe that as long as their site isn’t hosted on US based servers that they are pretty safe from retribution by the entertainment industry and their trade groups, the problem is that if ICE has their way this may not be the case.

This is a lesson that Richard O’Dwyer, a computer undergrad studying at a university in northern England, is learning as the US authorities are trying very hard to extradite him to the US to face charges of being the admin of the TVShack site that was seized by ICE in mid-2010.

It doesn’t matter that O’Dwyer is a UK citizen or that TVShack is extremely similar to another site called TV-Links which has already been deemed as being legal by the UK courts. As far as the US authorites are concerned O’Dwyer has broken US law and as such should face US courts.

So what basis is ICE using as grounds for the charges and extradition attempt?

Well it boils down to one simple thing – O’Dwyer used a US based domain registrar, VeriSign, to register the TVShack domain.

“The jurisdiction we have over these sites right now really is the use of the domain name registry system in the United States. That’s the key,” says ICE assistant deputy director Erik Barnett speaking with The Guardian.

The only necessary “nexus to the US” is a .COM or .NET domain for which Verisign acts as the official registry operator, Barnett added.

The whole domain seizing operation by ICE has been fraught with questions about its legality, as well as more than a few already deemed legal sites being seized, and this situation with O’Dwyer only goes to show just how much these organizations will go to bend, or ignore, the law to get what they want.

South Tyneside Council in the UK has subpoenaed Twitter to hand over the two accounts, one public and one private, for fellow councillor Ahmed Khan. The council claims that Khan is the anonymous blogger known as Mr. Monkey who they claim has been making false accusations about the council.

Last night, the Chronicle revealed how South Tyneside Council launched a two-year legal battle attempting to unmask the person who runs the “Mr Monkey” blog.

The blog claims to “expose” what goes on behind the scenes at the authority, and has levelled many unfounded accusations at council leader Iain Malcolm and other councillors and council officers.

Now Coun Ahmed Khan, deputy leader of the Independent Alliance, is the subject of a subpoena which the council has issued to Twitter. The social network site must hand over all the personal details of his two accounts, his personal one and councillor account.

It means the plaintiffs will be able to access private messages sent to his accounts, which Coun Khan claims raises “serious privacy issues”.

There is no word yet if Twitter will comply but I think chances are they will comply.

Those lucky Brits, they get to have all the fun, or at least they will after 2013 when UK mobile provider O2 doubles the size of its existing network and in the process turning on free wi-fi access for everyone, not just their own customers.

According to the report by BBC the initial hot spots will be available in 450 of the O2 owned sites but will be increased by expanding to other locations, locations that will include shops and restaurants.

O2 said access to the hotspots would be through a simple sign-up process and would be free to both O2 and non-O2 customers.

For Jeremy Green, a principal analyst with Ovum, the move is a “step in the right direction” to sorting out O2′s capacity issues, brought about by high iPhone ownership and the increasing desire for data on the move.

“450 sites is not fantastic coverage and wi-fi isn’t something that smartphone users will be able to rely on but it is a gesture in the right direction,” he said.

He said it was “surprising” that O2 was prepared to offer it free to non-customers, something the firm is hoping to fund via advertising.

Could you ever imagine anything like this happening in the US or Canada? Not likely.

I know the Wii is popular, but this is ridiculous: according to the number crunchers at GfK Chart-Track, Nintendo’s Wii console is now in one-third of British homes. That means there are more Wiis than cats (or dogs!) in the UK.

Needless to say, Nintendo has leapt on this (admittedly impressive) stat in its marketing for Christmas, which will involve the Queen appearing in an advert for the company. Or Helen Mirren. Which is sort of the same thing. Also appearing will be Terry Wogan, Alexandra Burke, and X Factor poppets JLS.

Nintendo’s dominance is greater in the UK than almost anywhere else – and just to prove it, GfK Chart-Track points out that one in six Brits own a Nintendo DS.

UK Defence Secretary Liam Fox has stated that stores should refuse to stock the forthcoming Medal of Honor (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) because the game allows players to kill British troops as the Taliban.

The first-person shooter is out in October, but has already caught the attention of the media for its inclusion of the Taliban as playable characters. Fox is the first truly big political name (in the UK, at least) to wade in. Here’s what he had to say:

“It’s shocking that someone would think it acceptable to recreate the acts of the Taliban. At the hands of the Taliban, children have lost fathers and wives have lost husbands. I am disgusted and angry. It’s hard to believe any citizen of our country would wish to buy such a thoroughly un-British game. I would urge retailers to show their support for our armed forces and ban this tasteless product.”

Even though I find the Taliban to be reprehensible in many ways, I find Fox’s views utterly bizarre and blinkered. Here is a man who believes a simple videogame has some tangible link with real life, as though by shooting a polygonal figure on a screen people are somehow indoctrinated with the Taliban’s own warped ideology, or are making a statement about their allegiances in a real war.

Furthermore, isn’t it terribly strange that Fox is resorting to censorship, a popular tactic of – yes! – the Taliban? Perhaps that kind of arrogance comes easily to a man who thinks he can tell everybody else what it is to be “un-British”.

I don’t think Medal of Honor‘s nose is completely clean – perhaps there’s something to be said about publisher EA’s decision to exploit an existing war for profit – but Fox’s assertions are from Bizarroland.

For what it’s worth, EA offered the following response, and it’s one I can only applaud:

“The format of the new Medal of Honor game merely reflects the fact that every conflict has two sides. We give gamers the opportunity to play both sides. Most of us have been doing this since we were seven: someone plays the cop, someone must be robber. In Medal of Honor multiplayer, someone’s got to be the Taliban.”

Well, exactly.
