Of all of the video content Microsoft introduced to Xbox Live back in December, the UFC app was perhaps one of the most highly anticipated of the bunch. Its big debut was last Friday with UFC 141, but the debut didn’t quite go as well as Microsoft was hoping for.

Actually, that’s probably too much of an understatement–it was a complete disaster. Microsoft was banking on its debut being a success, so much so that they handed out 30,000 free passes for the UFC 141 event on Xbox Live in an attempt to get people excited for the app.

As it turned out, those 30,000 extra heads on top of the paid subscribers was too much for the service to handle, and anyone trying to watch the event on Xbox Live was met with crashes, excessive stuttering, erratic picture quality, and even a reset of the broadcast back to an earlier point, according to BitMob’s Dan Hsu.

Following the disastrous debut, Hsu reached out to Microsoft for comment on the myriad problems users were faced with when trying to watch UFC 141. Here’s what a Microsoft spokesperson had to say:

“The broadcast of UFC 141 through the UFC for Xbox LIVE application was hampered by technical issues appearing in the hours leading up to the fight. Despite restoring service to some users during the course of UFC 141, there is a great deal of room for improvement. All 30,00 users who registered to view UFC 141 for free will be provided access to a future fight at no cost.

“We want to ensure that the 30,000 giveaway recipients for UFC 141 have an optimal experience with UFC on Xbox LIVE, and we are currently working with our partners at the UFC to ensure we deliver just that. The gamertags of the 30,000 users who registered for UFC 141 are being safely kept on file for free access to a future UFC event, and we will have more updates to share in the near future.”

Did you (attempt to) watch UFC 141 on Xbox Live? Let us know in the comments.

Brock Lesnar’s fight with Alistair Overeem is coming up soon on December 30th. UFC president Dana White, who arranged the match, noted at the time of the agreement back in September that the fight would go five rounds. That’s all fine and dandy, except that neither Lesnar nor Overeem agree with White at all.

“That’s fine, because it’s not going five rounds,” retorted Lesnar.

Overeem was less taciturn, and went into more depth than his upcoming opponent:

“I’m prepared for five rounds. I’ve been doing the five rounds forever now it seems. But looking at myself, the type of fighter that I am, looking at Brock, the type of fighter he is, looking at both our characters, we’re aggressive. We’re not the type of guys who back up, we’re fighters. We want to finish fights. And yes, I’m going to be doing that on Dec. 30. I expect him to be doing that, so I don’t see really going past the first or the second round. The second round maximum.”

“I feel the same,” Lesnar agreed. “This is a heavyweight fight that we’re both going in to finish. I don’t foresee it going five rounds.”

Lesnar (6-foot-2 ½, 270 pounds) is a fan-favorite, but hasn’t fought since losing the heavyweight belt to Cain Velasquez in October. By contrast, Overeem (6-foot-5, 255 pounds) boasts an impressive resume: he is currently the only man in history to hold a world championship in both a major MMA organization (Strikeforce) and kickboxing organization (K-1) concurrently.

We’ll all find out December 30th when these two manbeasts battle for the next UFC title shot at Junior Dos Santos.

So who do you think it will be? Lesnar or Overeem? Let us know down below.

UFC 139 saw one of the finest mixed martial art match-ups in memory, as Dan Henderson edged to a narrow triumph over Brazil’s Mauricio Rua. It was a bout that left both men bloodied and battered.

All three judges gave Henderson the victory by 48-47, but not before Rua spent the last two rounds dominating the fight. It would have been a remarkable comeback for Rua, who was in turn almost overcome by Henderson in the first two rounds.

In the opener, Henderson had Rua against the cage and was close to a standing chokehold submission early on. A series of right-hand punches to Rua’s head opened a cut above the Brazilian’s left eye, as the fight looked to be heading in only one direction.

While the second round was less frantic, Henderson still controlled proceedings, bloodying Rua’s nose. As Henderson said after the fight, before being taken to hospital: “I should have had him finished there. His tank was running low there.”

In the next round, Rua was knocked to the floor by a powerful right hand shot, but almost gained a submission hold by grabbing Henderson’s left foot while on the canvas. Towards the end of the third round, Rua dispatched a volley of scoring punches as he pushed Henderson against the cage.

For the final two rounds, it was a different story, with Rua controlling the pace of the fight, wobbling Henderson with a hard right in the fourth, and getting on top of him in the fifth to deliver a succession of blows to the head.

Yet Henderson held on, just – even more remarkable, considering this was his first fight in UFC for two years. Now aged 41, he had left the sport in 2009.

The fight was immediately declared a classic, with UFC President Dana White stating:

“That’s without a doubt one of the top three best fights ever in MMA. I have so much respect for both of those guys to dig down that deep in a five-round fight. That was like our Ali-Frazier III. It was incredible.”

Did you catch this amazing scrap?

Strikeforce continues this Saturday night, but without heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, some of the fighters are wondering what they’re fighting for.

Overeem, Strikeforce’s last heavyweight champion, signed on with the UFC and will fight Brock Lesnar at the end of the year. It’s easy to see why Overeem decided to move to the UFC, he’ll be getting bigger fights and bigger checks, but it doesn’t say much for the Strikeforce organization.

Ben Fowlkes, at Sports Illustrated, writes:

“When it started, the (Strikeforce) Grand Prix was supposed to be the tournament that would crown a top heavyweight and revitalize the entire Strikeforce organization. Now, less than a year later, the stakes are vague at best, the big-name stars are almost completely absent, and the champion is headed to the UFC.”

The UFC purchased Strikeforce last March, but it doesn’t look like they’re investing too much effort into the struggling fighting league. Instead, the Strikeforce Grand Prix seems like a farm league for the UFC. Win and you can get a chance to compete on the big stage. Lose, and well, you’ll end up as a cautionary tale.

SI points notes that fighters like Brett Rogers, Fedor Emelianenko, Andrei Arlovski, and Fabricio Werdum all lost their positions after being knocked out of the Grand Prix tournament.

So is that what the Strikeforce fighters are fighting for on Saturday? Survival? Will Antonio Silva and Sergei Kharitonov follow in Alistair Overeem’s footsteps? Will Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier be kicked to the curb?

But maybe that’s just the nature of the beast. It is a fight after all.

Barnett said:

“Titles and things like that are spoils of war. You have to go out there and win battles before you can raid the dead of all their belongings.”

Here’s a preview of Saturday Night’s Strikeforce fights.

Brock Lesnar will return to the Octagon on December 30 when he takes on Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Speaking to The Times Overeem revealed:

“Brock is a big name, a dangerous guy, and this is a dream matchup.” Alistair added, ”Brock’s a big guy, an exciting wrestler with his takedowns.

“I want to see this fight myself. Overall, I’m a different fighter. A striker, athletic, big. These are going to be two big trucks going at it on a collision course.”

Overeem most recently defended his Strikeforce belt in June, winning with a unanimous decision against takedown specialist Fabrio Werdum.

Lesner on the other hand hasn’t fought since losing his UFC heavyweight belt to Cain Velasquez in October, then suffering a return episode of the intestinal ailment diverticulitis.

The winner of the Dec. 30 match will be first in line to take on the winner of the Nov. 12 match between Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos.

The Strikeforce belt won’t be part of the promotion, even though the UFC recently purchased Strikeforce.

In the meantime Overeem is said to be looking for the perfect training spot in Los Angeles.

Who will you be rooting for when this match gets underway? Brock Lesnar or Alistair Overeem?

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva defeated Yushin Okami Saturday night at UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In dispatching Okami, Silva recorded his 14th-straight victory in the UFC, a record for the sport’s top promotion.

Maybe more prominent in Silva’s mind was finally getting the opportunity to avenge the last loss on his record dating back to a 2006 bout in which he was disqualified after illegally kicking Okami. It took Silva (31-4-1) only two minutes into the second round to finalize Okami (26-6) with his trademark striking, successfully defending his UFC title for a record nine-straight fights.

Okami, winner of his past three contests, had his back against the cage for the majority of the seven minutes of combat that took place in Silva’s home country of Brazil. UFC 134 was the organization’s first venture back to the South American MMA hotbed since 1998.

With his victory Saturday night, Silva has essentially wiped out all meaningful challengers to his 185-pound belt. Buzz will certainly begin to circulate as to who Silva’s next match will be against.

At middleweight, Silva could wait for the winner of the upcoming fight between Chael Sonnen and rising star Brain Stann on Oct. 8. A re-match with Sonnen would generate considerable amount of interest after Sonnen nearly defeated “The Spider” a year ago before being submitted in the waning seconds of the fifth round. The only other reasonable option at 185 would be “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Mark Munoz who has won his last three fights. Munoz, though, will probably have to notch one more top-flight victory before earning a title fight.

Fans, no doubt, will be clamoring once again for a super fight between Silva and Georges St. Pierre. The match-up would be the highest grossing affair the UFC could possibly hope for. Although the fight would crown the best pound-for-pound MMA fighter, standing in the way is St. Pierre’s reluctance to jump from welterweight up to middleweight.

One last option is for Silva to abandon the 185-class and take his past flirtations at light heavyweight to the next level. If he does, he would most likely by-pass any tune-up fights and go straight for the belt. A title fight at 205 for Silva would have to wait, however, until top-contender Rashad Evans gets his fight against the winner between current champion Jon Jones and Rampage Jackson’s bout at UFC 135 on Sept. 24.

As most of us expected, Kinect was a big focus during Microsoft’s E3 press conference this year. Also high on Microsoft’s priorities was the expansion of the Xbox 360′s media capabilities, with the introduction of several new media services and features.

First up, Microsoft showed off a brand new Kinect dashboard. The new dashboard takes advantage of the Kinect’s voice recognition capabilities and allows the user to control practically the entire Xbox 360 experience through voice commands alone. The new interface is streamlined to make navigating and playing your content as easy as possible.

To that end, Microsoft also announced Bing for Xbox 360. It isn’t the same Bing you use in your browser, nor does it mean that you’ll be able to browse the web on your 360. What it does mean, however, is that searching for content – movies, games, and so on – can be done entirely by voice through Bing. Going by the video, it actually seems to work pretty well.

In an even more surprising announcement, Microsoft revealed plans to bring live TV straight to your Xbox 360. Very little details were shared during the reveal, but Microsoft stated that you’ll be able to watch your local stations as well as several networks to be announced closer to the launch of the new service.

As part of its expansion of media available on the 360, Microsoft announced that YouTube will be coming to Xbox Live as well. It’s not known if you’ll have full access or if you’re limited to predetermined content, but either way it’s a start. Also, UFC president Dana White took to the stage to announce that live UFC events will be coming to Xbox Live, and it includes features similar to ESPN3 on Xbox 360 that allows you and your friends to place friendly bets on the outcome of the match.

All of these new features are expected to launch sometime this fall.

The UFC returned to its home town of Las Vegas Saturday night for UFC 106: Ortiz vs. Griffin 2. As always, we have the results but if you don’t want to know, skip down the page to the video.

The lead bout saw the rematch between Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin who last fought each other in April 2006 in a fight still warmly remembered by UFC fans.

The result of UFC 106 saw a reverse of the previous fight, with Griffin defeating Ortiz via split decision (28-29, 30-27, 29-28) in what some are calling a contriversial decision. Griffin lost the first two rounds before coming back and dominating Tito in the third.

UFC heavy weight champ Brock Lesnar is said to have returned home Tuesday following surgery to treat a bacterial infection in his intestine.

Lesnar was reported to have been admitted to hospital with a mystery illness November 15, with news of the surgery for an intestinal issue November 17.

Reports on the success of Lesnar’s surgery are mixed. One report quotes a friend who says that Lesnar may need to undergo further surgery depending on how he recovers, and a decision on his future in the ring would be decided then.

Lesnar’s coach is quoted as saying that the champ “much better than he was” and was “feeling better. He’s at home, that’s where he wants to be.” The coach confirmed that Lesnar may require further surgery, but went on to say that “his goal is to get back and get back in the cage.”

UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is in hospital receiving treatment for a “serious illness” that will keep him out of the MMA ring for an extended period.

Lesnar had previously been diagnosed with Infectious mononucleosis (also known as kissing disease or glandular fever) which had kept him bed ridden for over two weeks. Reports suggest that his health took a turn for the worse, and a second, undisclosed illness was discovered after he was admitted to hospital.

UFC President Dana White told Yahoo Sports that “It’s bad..It’s real bad. I am worried about it. I can’t really talk about it right now, but [Lesnar] is in rough shape.” White went on to say that at the request of Lesnar, the UFC would not be disclosing the nature of the “serious illness.”

Lesnar has pulled out of his UFC 106 fight and his scheduled fight January 2 against Shane Carwin.
