U2 front man and rock star Bono is set to be rolling in money very soon.  The rocker owns 1.5% of Facebook which is expected to go public soon.  If the social networking giant comes even close to the IPO valuation of $100 billion dollars that everyone is talking about, Bono will be worth more than $1 billion dollars.

This will set Bono hundreds of millions of dollars ahead of current richest rocker Paul McCartney.

Facebook is expected to go public next month in one of the largest IPO’s in history.

Facebook is currently sitting on a pile of cash from its ever increasing revenues.

As part of its initial filings with the SEC, Facebook now has more than 850 users and more than half of them sign on every single day. Company financials which were released said that  the company produced a $1 billion profit last year from $3.71 billion in revenues. The company derives 85% of those revenues from advertising, with the rest from social gaming and other fees.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to make more than $28 billion dollars from the IPO.  He has repeatedly shied away form going public in order to keep the company focused on making great products.  His slogan is,

“We don’t build services to make money; we make money to build better services,”

Until now Google Inc has had the largest IPO in history.  Facebook is looking to shatter that record.

U2 Guitarist David Evans, better known to his millions of fans as The Edge has been denied the necessary permits required to build five massive mansions along an environmentally sensitive ridgeline above Malibu.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times one of those officials said:

“In 38 years of this commission’s existence, this is one of the three worst projects that I’ve seen in terms of environmental devastation.”

While Evans claims the project is full of “green” standards including solar panels, recycled materials, a rainwater catchment system and other additions.

According to officials the project, which is now likely to end up in court, is simple too large to qualify as eco-friendly and would set a dangerous precedent in the area.

U2 frontman Bono and his partner Edge may have written the score for the oft-delayed Broadway musical Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark but that doesn’t mean Bono doesn’t think the musical is awful.

Speaking with Nightline Bono said of the show:

“It might have been a little hard for some other people around here to take that, but we don’t disagree with The New York Times. That’s the sort of stuff we were saying backstage.”

Bono continued his criticism of the show when speaking to Billboard about former show director Julie Taymor:

“Julie would not accept this . . . She got very close to it, so close, perhaps, that she couldn’t see it. And we were going out and coming back and we could see very clearly what we thought were the problems and she didn’t think they were as big a problem as we did.”

With the new version of the play Bono says, “this time you have a really clear story line.”

Hopefully with that clear story line they don’t also end up with more injuries and an even bigger budget than the more than $60 million they have already thrown into the fire and turned into ashes.

There is no doubt that very few enjoyable experiences can equal the memories we might have of our first concert. Mine was Jethro Tull’s War Child Tour at Maple Leaf Garden back in the early 70s.

For the most part the concert experience has never really changed with the band at one end of a huge arena on a gigantic stage with huge towers of speakers and massive light shows. The stage may be as simple as a single platform with the drum kit on a riser, or it can be a Disneyland type where just about anything can happen. But in the end the people who have come to see the show do so from a unequal distances to the stage.

U2 in its upcoming concert tour is looking to change that experience with a unique setup. Starting in Barcelona on June 30th U2 will unveil its 360° concert experience where the band will play on a stage smack in the middle of the arena.

U2’s long time show director, Willie Williams, worked again with architect Mark Fisher to create the innovative 360° design which will gives fans of the band an unobstructed view of the band as it plays. You can see a virtual tour of the stage at 360.U2.com.

U2 have announced their tour dates for 2009. The U2 360° Tour will visit 14 cities across Europe finishing at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on August 22. The European tour will be followed by dates in North America beginning at Chicago’s Soldier Field on September 12th, 2009.

After participating in the “We Are One” concert yesterday in honor of Obama, U2 released their newest single “Get on Your Boots” today. Their next album No Line on the Horizon comes out on March 3, and you’ll even have to wait until February 15th to get the newly-released single on iTunes. 

It’s different– and is that so bad? I want to let the hardcore fans decide, because I’m certainly no U2 expert. I do have a feeling that this is going to take some time to get used to, but at least it’s been received better than their performance yesterday: Newsday’s Backstage Pass claims that there “wasn’t enough drum and bass in the mix” during their live performance, and that “[Adam] Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr.’s unassailable rhythms have always given Bono and The Edge the cover to say and play what they want. Without them, U2 seems much more ordinary.”

Along with some colorful references to lyrics and the Manhatten skyline, Bono discusses the serious nature of the global poverty as discussed at the summit.
