Two amateur treasure hunters have unearthed a mass of celtic coins that are over 2,000 years old and estimated to be worth a total of $15 million, according to the NY Post.

Richard Miles and Reg Mead began searching for this particular treasure over 30 years ago when they heard rumors that a farmer in their area had found a few coins on his farm. Sparking their interest, they began searching themselves for what they hoped would make them rich. They did so unsuccessfully until this past February when they stumbled upon a stash of about 120 gold and silver coins.

After finding the small batch of coins, the two amateur treasure hunters from the island of St. Clement, Jersey off the shores of France were inspired to strengthen their search to try to find the source of the coins. Using a powerful metal detector known as a deepseeker, the two men located a large metal mass beneath the surface.

“The machine picked up a really strong signal – so we immediately got in touch with professional archaeologists,” Mr Mead said.

“They started digging and we could not believe how many coins there were,” adding, ”all of them were stuck together.”

“We had been searching that land for 30 years.” he said.

According to Fox News, the coins could have been buried to prevent Roman troops from getting them during Julius Caesar’s invasion of the British Islands.

This will go on record as the largest celtic coin find in history with an estimated 30,000-50,000 coins with each one worth anywhere between $156-$311. The previous largest find came in at only 11,000 coins.
