On June 22 a tornado tore through Churchill Downs Racetrack in Lousville, Kentucky destroying several barns and leaving roofs caved in at several stalls, thankfully we have learned that the path of destruction did not claim the lives of any horses or humans.

Working with the home of the Kentucky Derby were the Louisville Fire Department, Metro Police Department and Gas and Electric Company which all helped to assist stable workers and horsemen as they attempted to secure their Thoroughbred horses.

When all was said and done nine out of 48 Churchill Downs barns were destroyed by the storm,  while the tracks chapel also suffered damage.

After the storm some 200 horses wer displaced with many being transferred to the nearby Keeneland Race Course, Skylight Training center and other locations throughout the area.

For their part trainers and stall owners have worked together, in many cases offering their own empty stalls to fellow horsemen who they compete against on a regular basis.

Churchill executives are working to fix the barns that can be fixed and build new stables where needed, although a time frame for the renovation is not known.

Despite the damage the track will resume races on June 24 when they will host the Downs After Dark races. [via Yahoo Sports]

Alabama faced some pretty nasty weather today that saw a monstrous tornado that was reported to be nearly a mile wide hit the city of Tuscaloosa and kill fifteen people during its rampage.

On Friday, April 22 2011, a tornado touched down at the airport in St. Louis bursting glass in the concourse and damaging cars on the top level of the parking garage.

Lambert spokesman Jeff Lea said he did not immediately have information about how many people were hurt, or how badly. He said the injuries were believed to be from glass that shattered as the storm hit the airport. An Air National Guard facility at the airport was reportedly damaged.

Lea said several cars parked at the airport were damaged. He didn’t yet know if any planes were affected, or if any flights were delayed or canceled.

Damages were also reported in Maryland Heights, Bridgeton, St. Ann, Ferguson and Florissant. As well Interstate 270 in the storm area was closed.

Missouri utility company Ameren has reported more than 39,000 power outages.

A tornado is reported to have struck a shopping area in Scottsdale, on the outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona after a day of wild weather.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for the area at approx 8:30pm local time, and the tornado is believed to have struck shortly thereafter.

The tornado is believed to have hit the Desert Ridge Marketplace at Loop-101 and Tatum. The Arizona Department of Public Safety confirmed the tornado, but damage reports are not currently available.

The tornado warning lapsed at 9pm MST, and the storm cell behind the tornado has continued on a track to the East.

A tornado in Blythe, California, near the state border with Arizona flipped trucks this evening, causing damage to houses and major road closures.

The tornado was spotted near the junction of Interstate 10 and Blythe Avenue at around 4pm local time, about 5 miles west of Blythe Airport.

Reports are sketchy but there is said to be severe damage in some areas and widespread power outages. At least three large trucks were blown over as the tornado crossed I-10.

Interstate 10 was closed by Caltrans “until further notice” due to the tornado reports.

The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tornado watch for Southern California and parts of South-West Arizona.

According to the alert, the tornado watch remains in effect until 9pm PST/ 10pm MST Thursday. Strong and damaging straight line winds in excess of 70 mph are possible, with severe thunderstorms capable of producing a short lived tornado possible through to 10pm MST.

The watch follows an earlier Tornado Warning, and an alleged Tornado in Ventura.

Sounds like another fun night for So-Cal residents.

The wild weather on the U.S. West Coast continues with news today that a tornado may have struck Ventura on the outskirts of Los Angeles.

According to reports, the alleged tornado damaged two areas of the city, lifting a car into a tree, damaging homes and taking out power.

Witnesses described seeing a wind funnel touch the ground prior to the damage being caused. No injuries have been reported.

The National Weather Service has not confirmed the tornado though, and are suggesting it may have been a “microburst.”

A tornado (or tornadoes) struck coast areas around Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon (January 19,) including Long Beach, Sunset Beach,Huntington Beach and Seal Beach.

Reports are sketchy at the moment, but there is confirmation of vehicles being flipped by the tornado, and some building damage.

The image above comes from Jonathan360 on Twitpic and shows an overturned vehicle at Seal Beach.

Local media reports a confirmed sighting of a tornado touching down near Sunset Beach. Boats in the area were said to have been thrown “30 feet to 50 feet in the air.”

The storm that caused the tornado (or tornadoes) caused widespread disruption across the Los Angeles area, with the heavy rain flooding the 710 Freeway in Long Beach.

As at 3pm local time, the tornado warning had been lifted, although authorities warned residents in the area to stay indoors as the storm continued to pound the coast. A flood warning remains in effect for South Central Los Angeles.

A destructive tornado struck a commercial area in Beaumont, Texas this afternoon, tearing through a number of businesses.

The yet uncategorized Beaumont tornado struck at 2pm local time, touching down on top of a Kohl’s Department Store before continuing on to nereby Parkdale Mall.

The tornado caused the roof of the Department store to collapse, and flipped cars over in the parking lot. The tornado was unexpected, although fortunately at this stage there are no reports of any deaths, with about a dozen people believed to be injured.

Beaumont is located 87 miles from Houston, and is a popular shopping center in Eastern Texas.

Tornados have ripped through Murfreesboro, other parts of middle Tennessee and Kentucky today, injuring at least 9 people and causing extensive property damage in the area.

Dispatchers from the Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency said the county had been “heavily impacted” and is now in “response phase” after receiving numerous reports of tornados on the ground at midday and early afternoon, Friday.

Martha Tolbert, spokesperson for the Middle Tennessee Medical Center, said nine people have been taken to the hospital with injuries resulting from the tornado. She did not have any other details of any fatalities or the severity of the people’s injuries.

UPDATE: Reports are coming in that 2 people have been confirmed dead and 13 people are being treated for injuries in local hospitals. Also, the local power company is saying that approximately 15,000 people are without power.

Mississippi Tornado: Magee

The first tornado hit in Magee — a small town northeast of Hattiesburg — around 1:30 a.m., emergency officials say. The twister tore through 60 homes and businesses and flattened a church, Corinth Baptist, completely. Witnesses say only the building’s sanctuary doors still stood by morning.

At least 17 people were hurt, though no deaths have been reported. Two of the injuries were serious enough to warrant air transportation to a medical center.

Mississippi Tornado: Jackson

The second storm touched down in Jackson around 4 a.m. Nine homes and a business are said to be severely damaged. No injuries have been reported.

Tornado season started early in Oklahoma today, with reports of multiple tornadoes across the State.

At least one tornado touched down in the north west part of Oklahoma city, destroying houses and damaging others.

6 houses around the Oak Tree Country Club are reported as being destroyed, with reports of at least 20 other houses damaged. There are also reports of damages to businesses in the area.

Around 10,500 people are without power, and three people are being treated for injuries.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for the greater New York City area, including Nassau and Suffolk counties, and northern New Jersey.

Weather on the East Coast has caused issues all day, with delays at major airports. Tornado warnings are also in place in Viriginia and parts of Connecticut.
