TiVo customers can rest assured that for any of the new Freeview channels such as 7TWO, the TiVo will automatically scan for the new channel and program scheduling will automatically appear in the TiVo proprietary 7 day on-screen TV Guide (EPG) ready to watch, record, Season Pass record and add to WishList searches of favourite actors or genres.

7TWO, the brand new entertainment channel is jam-packed with movies, action, drama, lifestyle, kids programming and even theme nights. Comprising classic hits such as The Sopranos, plus brand new series’ of favourites such as Ugly Betty, Heroes, Lost and 24 which will be premiered on 7TWO, Seven has delivered a channel with shows for the whole family to watch.

TiVo Wins $200 Million Judgement Against Dish Network

TiVo, the company that helped lead a revolution in television digital video recorders (DVR), won a federal court contempt judgment against the Dish Network in Texas.

In a statement, TiVo explained: “we are pleased by the court’s ruling to impose contempt sanctions of approximately $200 million against EchoStar for its continued violation of a Court-ordered permanent injunction… This brings total damages and sanctions in this case to approximately $400 million.”

TiVo had sued EchoStar, which was then bought by Dish Network, for infringing on its DVR copyrights. The suit has been ongoing for half a decade, and will likely continue to be appealed.

TiVo, which was founded in 1997, won an earlier judgment that ordered EchoStar to stop offering DVR services. That was years ago, and now EchoStar owes $200 million in contempt fees for the ongoing offense. While TiVo asked the court for $1 billion, the court awarded only a fraction of that amount.

Dish offered its own statement on the ruling, saying: “We are pleased that the district court rejected Tivo’s request to award a billion dollars in sanctions and that it found that any violation of the injunction was not willful. While we disagree that any amount of sanctions was warranted, the decision confirms our belief that we designed around Tivo’s patent in good faith. We believe that we ultimately will prevail on appeal.”

TiVo set to spam paused shows

Just to set the record straight I don’t own a TiVo mainly because it’s a U.S. contraption that hasn’t made it to north of the 49th parallel. So while it doesn’t really bother me I can understand how their announcement today might piss off a few of the U.S. customers.

It seems that someone in the company came up with this incredibly brilliant way to totally aggravate their declining customer base. You see what they found out is that people have a tendency to pause the show that are watching for a refreshment fill up. This means that for a period of time there is a screen with a static image and this is just wasteful I guess because - voila – you now have a commercial being displayed on that screen.

I wonder if they plan on using that extra ~~rip-off~~ ad revenue to help reduce subscription costs to the consumer? After all isn’t that the whole idea these days of free stuff supported by all these different advertising ~~intrusions~~ methods.

Netflix to stream movies and TV episodes to Tivo

TiVo Inc. and Netflix, Inc. are teaming up to provide Netflix and TiVo Series3, TiVo HD, and TiVo HD XL subscribers with the ability to have thousands of movies and TV episodes instantly streamed from Netflix directly to their TVs.

The agreement provides Netflix with an important new technology partner to instantly stream a growing library of more than 12,000 choices of movies and TV episodes directly from Netflix to the TV.

The services will be offered for free starting December.

Blackberry Gets TiVo and MySpace, All in One Day

Blackberry users are getting two new services on their smartphones today.

TiVo has announced plans to let Blackberry users control their DVR recordings on-the-go with a new app on the way soon. The program will let you browse through program guides and schedule recordings right from the phone.

The other offering comes from MySpace, which unveiled a new Blackberry app to make messaging, commenting, and other services specific to the social network easy. The most interesting feature is probably the camera integration, which lets you take a photo and have it shoot right over into your profile.

Of course, it’s not exactly groundbreaking, as our friends over at Mashable point out. Facebook’s eerily similar Blackberry app has been around for almost a year. And TiVo’s had options for remote controlling via a network interface for ages, too. Still, it’s something new for the Blackberry and an understandable step for MySpace as far as mobile expansion.

Both apps, by the way, come from partnerships with Research in Motion.
