One man is crossing the country with nothing but a truck full of bacon to pay his way, in what has been deemed the Great American Bacon Barter.

Actor, comedian, and writer Josh Sankey has embarked on his mission to cross the country on bacon as a promotion for Oscar Mayer’s new thick cut bacon, reports The New York Times.

Sankey is traveling from New York to Los Angeles with 3,000 pounds of Butcher Thick Cut Bacon in an experiment to see just how much America loves bacon.

Using just the tasty meat Americans seem to love above all others, Sankey will trade for food, fuel, a place to sleep at night, as well as anything else he may need along the way.

The bacon bartering man will travel from sea to sea along a route that includes bacon-loving cities like Charleston, West Virginia; Louisville, Kentucky; Chicago, Illinois; and Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Sankey was turned loose by Oscar Mayer on September 10 to start the journey that will last until the actor rolls into Los Angeles on September 23. He is traveling without cash or credit cards, forcing him to barter for everything he needs. So far, he has successfully received food, lodging, and even tickets to the Jets game.

Yahoo! News notes that Josh Sankey wrote on the website for the Great American Bacon Barter, saying:

“I need your help. I’m driving from NY to LA with no cash and no cards — just a trailer full of Butcher Thick Cut Bacon to barter with you for food, lodging and everything else I need. It’s all to find out if America loves this bacon as much as money!”

Josh Sankey is chronicling his voyage on his Twitter account, which he is using as one way to barter, and also on the Bacon Barter website. He is also using YouTube to post videos about the journey. As for his sleeping accommodations on Wednesday night? Sankey bartered some bacon for a night in a man’s basement in Louisville, Kentucky. His host even celebrated the occasion by getting himself a bacon-themed tattoo.
