Stacy Schuler was found guilty today on 16 counts of sexual battery for having sexual relations with five of her students. Schuler tried to plead insanity, but Judge Robert Peeler rejected her plea and sentenced Schuler to four years.

Schuler, a former gym and health teacher at a school in the suburbs of Cincinnati, had sex with five students. On top of the sex charges, Schuler was also convicted of three misdemeanor counts of providing alcohol to minors.

According to the Cincinnati Community Press, the sexual encounters between Schuler and her students, who were about 17 at the time, occurred at her Sprinboro home between August and December 2010. Schuler gave the students vodka smoothies, beer and peach wine. The students also testified that they found Schuler’s home a “safe place” to get high.

Schuler tried a defense of insanity, but the prosecutors weren’t buying it.

Warren County Prosecutor Teresa Hiett said:

“She got drunk and made some really poor choices. Does that mean she’s insane? No. She was the adult. She was the teacher. She had the trust. It’s the relationship between the defendant and the victims that makes this a crime.”

Defense attorney Charlie H. Rittgers said:

“They want us to believe that all of a sudden after 10 years teaching, she wants to throw it away to have sex with five different guys… It’s far more reasonable to believe Stacy was suffering from an underlying psychological disorder.”

Judge Peeler agreed that Schuler suffered from mental problems and possibly had a bipolar disorder, but concluded that voluntary alcohol consumption would not be taken into consideration when determining an insanity plea. Peeler said it would be a “magnificent leap” to say that Peeler didn’t know what she was doing was wrong.

Sarah L. Tolzien Investigation

Detectives say Sarah L. Tolzien, who teaches English and coaches the boys varsity cross country team at Rich South High School, had sexual relations with the teen on two separate occasions. The interactions are believed to have taken place in November, when Tolzien drove the boy home from school. An investigation has been underway since that time.

Sarah L. Tolzien is currently being held in the city of Matteson with bond set at $10,000. She is scheduled to appear in court on April 15. Tolzien herself is from the city of Arlington Heights.

Though the formal charges were just announced, Tolzien has been on administrative leave since December 1, police indicate.

Denise Ogden’s Accusations

Investigators say Denise Ogden, who taught seventh grade classes at Augusta’s Spirit Creek Middle School, had been having sexual relations with other educators during the day on the school grounds. In all, seven faculty members are under investigation.

Two others — principal Sharon McAlevy and public safety officer Ronnie Collins — have resigned from the school as well, according to local media reports. The four remaining educators believed to be involved in some capacity include two other teachers, a PE coach, and a graduation coach. They are all still employed by the district and the extent of their alleged involvement is not clear.

Teacher Sex Scandal Story

Officials say Denise Ogden actually exposed the whole thing herself by sending an e-mail to the school system, under a false name, revealing the details and also showing a photograph of another faculty member’s underwear — apparently as “proof” of what had happened.

As for what did happen, officials at the school district believe some of the faculty had set up an inflatable mattress inside the school’s Public Safety office. A second room is also believed to have been used.

To further complicate things, school leaders have indicated a love child has also resulted from the various trysts, though it’s not yet clear to which couple it might belong.

The Spirit Creek Middle School Investigation

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been working to sort out the facts and has even conducted some polygraph tests, TV stations in the area say. A full report is expected to be released next week. The Georgia Professional Standards Commission will ultimately decide whether Denise Ogden and the others will be able to keep their teaching licenses.
