Jor-El, the biological father of Superman, is played by Russell Crowe in Man of Steel, the next Superman film that started shooting in August.

Yesterday, pics emerged of Crowe in his Jor-El outfit, and the Kiwi actor didn’t look all that super, man. More paunchy. Paunchman’s a thing, right? No? Crap.

The 47-year-old Crowe was spotted on set in Vancover, merrily puffing away on a cigarette as his costume was tweaked by crew members. Crowe reportedly worked out for this role (so perhaps those are just some unflattering folds) which is a good thing, really, as he’s going to be dad to Superman, as played by Henry Cavill:

That said, I still think Crowe is a good choice. The guy can act, and as the Daily Mail points out, at least he’s more streamlined than Marlon Brando was when he took the role. Crowe also has a passing likeness to Jor-El …

Man of Steel is being directed by 300 and Suckerpunch director Zack Synder, and will be a complete reboot of the Superman franchise. It’s due out June 14th, 2013, and comes with a budget of $175m.

As well as Cavill in the lead role and Crowe as his father, the film will have Amy Adams as Lois Lane (Adams beat Mila Kunis to the part), Michael Shannon as General Zod, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, the Editor in Chief of the Daily Planet, and Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Jonathan and Martha Kent, the adoptive parents of Superman.

Henry Cavill, the actor who gets to play Superman in the new movie Man Of Steel has finally tried on the Superman suit and he says that it was so cool he couldn’t keep his composure.

Cavill said of the first time he tried on the outfit:

“They just put it on, I turned around and look in the mirror and you can’t really play it cool – you sort of guffaw and laugh. I thought ‘OK, holy hell, this is real, it’s not a joke anymore.’ This is it…you’re doing it, you’re right in the middle of it.”

Unfortunately Cavill is keeping photos of the suit along with the movies plot line a complete mystery, although he has said that he’s ”being as true as I can be to the original character and who the character is.”

Speaking about what it takes to play the man of steel he told Zap2It:

“I’m on 5000 calories a day… You’ve got to eat protein first, then a little bit of carbs…you’ve gotta keep your hunger levels going. I’m training two and a half hours a day, pushing my body beyond its normal limits, putting on a lot of muscle mass and just making myself look like Superman.”

Now we wait patiently while twirling our thumbs for the official outfit photos to be released.

Antje Traue has been cast for a role in Zack Snyder’s upcoming 2012 flick Superman: Man Of Steel. Antje will be playing Faora a constant companion of General Zod who was introduced  in 1977′s Action Comics #471.

Traue’s most notable role to date was 2009′s Pandorum. Antje also has comic experience, having promoted that 2009 sci-fi project at WonderCon.

As we previously reported, the movie will star Henry Cavil as the Man Of Steel and is slated for a December 2012 release.

Are you excited to hear about the films casting choices so far? In any case it’s nice to see a Superman movie being produced that isn’t taking a decade to turn into reality.

Warner Bros. on Sunday announced that Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon has been cast to play General Zod in Zack Snyder’s Superman movie Man of Steel.

Shannon will play the nemesis to Superman, played by Henry Cavill. Also already announced for the film have been Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent) and Diane Lane (Martha Kent).

In a statement Synder said of his casting decision:

“Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

I don’t usually write much about movie news, or rumors, but this one caught me off-guard a little but being a fan of actor Kevin Costner and someone with high hopes for a decent Superman reboot (ala The Dark Knight reboot) this news item caught my eye.

According the the fine team at FirstShowing there is the rumor floating around that Costner could be in the running for a major role in the next attempt to reboot the Superman movie franchise

Deadline reports Kevin Costner is being circled for a key role in this new take on the iconic superhero. Though no details on his role are yet available, I’d be willing to bet that Costner would play Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White. However, it would be far more interesting if he was taking on a villainous role.

Though we’re not sure what villain will be attempting to thwart Supes this time around, it’s not hard to imagine Costner as arch nemesis Lex Luthor. The actor may even be able to pull of General Zod. But given his age, I’d be willing to bet such a strong, action-oriented villain would need to have a younger actor in those shoes. But I still think the safe bet is for Costner to take the role of Perry White.

I would have to agree with Ethan on this. If Costner is up for a role in the movie it is mostly as Perry White; but then he could make a rather interesting Lex Luthor.
