Brandon Jacobs is apologizing for comments he made about Gisele Bundchen on Tuesday. The Giants’ running back told reporters at MetLife Stadium about Gisele,

“She just needs to continue to stay cute and shut up.”

He went on the “The Doug Gottlieb Show” on ESPN Radio on Wednesday to issue a formal apology for telling Tom Brady’s wife to shut up.

He said,

“Given the fact that it’s a colleague of mine’s wife, I do apologize for saying that, because I shouldn’t have said that. It’s his wife and I should respect that just as much as anyone else.”

He didn’t apologize for saying she was cute though, insisting it was a compliment.

“No question, he should take that as a compliment,” Jacobs said of Brady. “If he finds something wrong with that, then that’s his problem.”

The scandal that prompted Jacobs to tell her to shut up in the first place was right after the game Gisele Bundchen was caught on camera complaining about the Patriots receivers dropping too many balls during the Super Bowl.

She said,

“My husband cannot f—– throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time. I can’t believe they dropped the ball so many times,”

Patriots receivers Wes Welker, Deion Branch and tight end Aaron Hernandez all dropped some pretty easy catches during the Patriots loss to the Giants. Tom Brady has been silent on the dropped passes and instead defended his teammates.

Of Welker he said,

“Wes is a phenomenal player and a teammate. I love that guy.”

Do you think that Gisele Bundchen should just stay cute and shut up or that she has a right to stick up for her husband?

On Sunday, February 5th, 2012 NBC and the NFL teamed up to deliver the first ever live streaming feeds for online Super Bowl viewers and that feature drew in an impressive 2.1 million unique viewers.

While still far from the record 111.3 million TV viewers who tuned in for the event it’s still a promising number of viewers for NBCSports.com and NFL.com who teamed up to broadcast the event live.

Online viewing still lagged a few seconds behind the live event and users didn’t receive the Madonna halftime show or the commercials, however those features were available through on-demand clickable viewing.

What users were given was optional camera views, access to Tweets from several respected NFL personalities and HD-quality video.

Kevin Monaghan, managing director of digital media for NBC Sports Group, said the live stream “exceeded our expectations in every way.”

Verizon Wireless also made the event available for streaming on some of the companies Smartphones.

Called a “complementary” option for viewers the program tested the ability of the NFL and NBC to deliver a unique experience that could add a “second screen” to the event for football fans who wants to cull extra information.

Past sporting events have already been tested online including the 2010 World Cup by ESPN and NBC’s coverage of the 2010 Olympics.

When all was said and done Super Bowl XLVI managed to engage online users for an average of 39 minutes, a huge number in terms of online sports viewing which should help push such offerings to users at an increasing level.

Did you watch Super Bowl XLVI online? What did you think of the quality of streaming services provided?

How many people watched the Super Bowl? According to new data from the Nielsen Company, more than 110 million people tuned in to Super Bowl XLVI last night to watch the New York Giants defeat the New England Patriots, making last night’s football game the most watched program in US television history.

Sports Illustrated reports that Super Bowl XLVI brought in 111.3 million viewers, beating the record set by last year’s Super Bowl which brought in 111 million viewers.

Viewership peaked last night during the final minutes of the fourth quarter at a 117.7 million viewers.

Madonna also set a Super Bowl record. Her show last night (you can see a video of the performance here) was the most watched Super Bowl show in history. 114 million people tuned in to watch Madonna’s halftime show, which is four million more than the amount of people who watched the Black Eyed Peas in 2011.

Nielsen has been keeping track of viewership during the halftime show since 1991. Madonna’s performance was the most watched in history.

According to SI, the last three Super Bowls now sit at 1, 2, and 3 on the most viewed programs list. The 1983 finale of M*A*S*H is the fourth most viewed show in TV history.

Were you one of the 111.3 million that watched Super Bowl XLVI last night? Did you tune in to watch Madonna’s halftime show?

The Super Bowl last night also set a few records for most tweets per second. At the end of the game, Twitter users sent 12,333 tweets per second. During Madonna’s halftime show, they sent 10,245 Tweets per second.

Everything these days seems to have to revolve around social media in one way or another and one would have though that the huge ad platform of the Super Bowl we would have seen much more of advertisers trying to connect using social media hooks.

Well it turns out that this isn’t the case as fresh analysis from the Altimeter Group shows that 32% of the 87 ads that were run during the Super Bowl stayed away from not only social media but also any online references of any kind.

As Drew Olanoff noted at The Next Web this showed that some companies are still “playing it safe” when it comes to including their online presence in their major advertising messages.

In what I’ll call “playing it safe”, it appears that most companies who did make reference to a presence on the Internet, chose to use their own URL rather than a hashtag or Facebook URL. Why is this? It has to do with controlling the message, obviously.

If I’m company and I’m spending a lot of money on the biggest television stage in the United States, there’s absolutely no way I’m going to ask millions of people to use a hashtag. There’s just no context to be had there and nothing to be gained. As we’ve seen with a recent McDonalds hashtag gaffe, it might actually cost you more money and brand integrity to defend something gone awry.

I have to agree with Drew on this and additionally I find it interesting that rather than push their company’s social media pages on places like Facebook they were opting to only show direct links to their own domain pages.

This hearkens back to a long held belief by many online people that companies and people should have direct control of their online identities and “Google juice” rather than farming it all out to social media data silos like Facebook and Twitter.

While Facebook and the like might be good for spot promotion type things I don’t believe that companies, or individuals who make their living from the web, should be putting all their eggs in the social network providers control.

Last night, the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots at Super Bowl XLVI. Eli Manning and Tom Brady both put in great performances as last night’s game set 8 new NFL records.

Manning, who opened the game with nine straight completions (an NFL record) said:

“Offensively, I thought we played very well. We played smart. There at the end, when we had an opportunity in the fourth quarter, we’d been in those situations and we knew that we had no more time left. We had to go down and score, and guys stepped up and made great plays.”

Manning threw 30-40 for 296 yards and one TD last night to help Tom Coughlin become the oldest Head Coach to win the Super Bowl at age 65.

Steve Weatherford also had a record breaking game to help the Giants win Super Bowl XLVI. Weatherford put three punts inside the 10-yard line last night, a new NFL record.

The rest of the records were set by Tom Brady and the losing Giants.

Brady threw 16 consecutive completions during Super Bowl XLVI. His performance last night also set a few new career records for the Pats’ QB. Brady brought up his total passing yards during a Super Bowl to 1,277, his total passes to 197, and his total completions to 127.

The Giants and Patriots also combined to set a new record for the most passing first downs (33).

Here are all the records set last night, according to the NY Times:

Tom Coughlin - Oldest Winning Head Coach – 65

Eli Manning – Most Consecutive Completions To Start Game – 9

Tom Brady – Most Consecutive Completions – 16

Tom Brady – Most Passing Yards, Career – 1,277

Tom Brady – Most Passes, Career – 197

Tom Brady – Most Completions, Career – 127

Steve Weatherford – Most Punts Inside 10, Game – 3

Most First Downs Passing, Game, Both Teams – 33 (N.Y.Giants 18, New England 15)

Super Bowl XLVI also tied several records.

Tom Brady tied Matt Light’s record for Most Super Bowl starts (5). New England’s 96-yard Touchdown drive tied an NFL record. The Giants tied records for fewest turnovers (0), most safeties (1), fewest rushing touchdowns (0), and fewest interceptions (o). New England had no penalty first downs, no punt returns, and no fumbles.

Did you watch Super Bowl XLVI?

According to Mashable, Super Bowl XLVI also set a few new Twitter records. At the end of the game Twitter saw 2,233 tweets per second (2nd most on the TPS list). The social networking site saw 10,245 tweets per <a title="M.I.A.

Madonna was in charge of halftime entertainment at this year’s Super Bowl. Over the course of twelve minutes and three outfits (which became less bizarre as the performance progressed), the Queen of Pop was joined on a typically humble and underlit stage by Nicki Minaj, M.I.A, Cee Lo Green, and gormless pop duo LMFAO.

Was it any good? Well, it was certainly a visual spectacular, but that goes with the territory nowadays. As predicted by the other queen of pop, Madge lip-synched her way through the whole thing (or at the very least used a backing track), but she’s looking as nimble and athletic as ever at 53, with cartwheels and some frenetic dancing on display.

Yet it wasn’t Prince 2007, was it? Still the best halftime show, in my opinion. But enough of me, here’s what some other people thought (and if you missed it, judge for yourselves – footage of the whole Madonna show is below):

“Joyous, unironic, open-hearted … [Madonna] was both in full command and full of generosity towards her massive audience.”
Ken Tucker, Entertainment Weekly [Link]

“The costumes were bizarre. And the dance moves were surprisingly stiff. But when the choir starting belting it out and Cee-Lo hit those high notes…she took me there.”
Michael Solomon, The Guardian [Link]

“[This was] little more than an ingeniously well planned — and shockingly transparent — advertisement for her new album, ‘MDNA,’”
Randall Roberts, LA Times [Link]

“This was Madonna’s party and besides breaking off bits of her greatest hits to remind people of a time when she was the biggest pop vixen on the planet, she had important career-advancing work to do.”
Greg Kot, Chicago Tribune [Link]

“The way they rhymed “Madonna” with “you wanna” was terrific. Just tremendous. And a bunch of times! Which was also great. Music is great.”

Eli Manning started Super Bowl XLVI by letting the New England Patriots known he meant business, becoming the first quarterback in Super Bowl history to complete nine consecutive passing plays with completions. However it was the quarterbacks last-minute score that eventually led the Giants to a 21-17 victory.

Manning hasn’t been kind to Tom Brady and the Pats, upsetting the teams perfect season in 2008 to tale home footballs top prize and doing the same this year with a less dominate but still impressive outing.

The match also happened to be the first time two quarterbacks who have won the Super Bowl’s MVP award faced off against each other and they took turns showing why they deserved those MVP nods.

Brady managed to finish 16 completions in a row but that wasn’t enough to stop Eli Manning’s nine-play, 88-yard drive that gave New York the go ahead push needed for the win.

In the end it was a 6-yard run up the middle by Ahmad Bradshaw that secured the win while Tom Brady attempted one last long yard heave that fell short of his players in the endzone.

Are you surprised that the New York Giants have once against managed to upset Brady and the Patriots during a Super Bowl showdown?

“This country can’t be knocked out with one punch, we get right back up again and when we do the world is going to hear the roar of our engines. Ya. It’s halftime America, and our second half is about to begin.”

Those are only some of the words spoken by Clint Eastwood in the Super Bowl ad from Chrysler this year.

Last year it was Eminem, a solid bass beat, and a new tagline meant to revitalize a demoralized city and country – “Imported from Detroit”.

This year the ‘social’ feeling of the company’s most important ad once more carries forward that love of America and a believe that we can come back from anything and be better than before.

Personally I think they knocked it out of the park but have look at the ad for yourself and let me know what you think in the comments.

The New England Patriots take on the New York Giants today in Super Bowl XLVI and in preparation for one of the worlds biggest sporting events the teams players have been ordered to take part in a specially balanced eating regime.

According to reports when arriving in Indianapolis for the Super Bowl players on the Patriots were sat down for a meal and were told they had to eat everything on their plates.

Apparently the diet restrictions are so strict that the organization brought its own cooks to the teams hotel and had them cook dinner for the players.

Among Saturday nights dinner was the choice of chicken, steak or fish which were all served with fresh vegetables.

The team’s players are expected to follow the team formed diet until after the Super Bowl concludes on Sunday.

I think I could handle my choice of chicken, steak or fish and fresh sides.

Would you mind having your own chef to cook you specially created and healthy meals even if the choices were limited to just several entrees?

In a surprising move by the New England Patriots the team released wide-receiver Tiquan Underwood on the eve of their matchup against the New York Giants for Super Bowl XLVI.

Underwood was deactivated from the teams 53-man roster so the team could activate defensive end Alex Silvestro from the Patriot’s practice squad.

The team issued a brief statement about their decision but did not explain why the wide receiver who also serves on special teams was cut from the active roster less then 24 hours before Super Bowl XLVI.

While Underwood played in five contests for the Patriots during the 2011-2012 season Silvestro only played in the teams December 24 matchup against Miami.

It’s believed that head coach Bill Belichick is attempting to build up greater depth in defense while increasing the possibility that Chad Ochocinco will be activated as the teams fifth wide receiver.

Do you think demoting Underwood with less than 24 hours to go before the Super Bowl was a cold but calculated move on behalf of the New England Patriots coaching staff?

For the first time in NFL history, the Super Bowl will be broadcast live online. If you can’t find a big screen TV to watch Super Bowl XLVI today, you’ll still be able to watch the game on your mobile phone or computer.

The NFL has started to stream more games online, but this is the first time that the Super Bowl will be played out on the internet. You can watch the game NBCSports.com and NFL.com. NBC said in a press release that viewers will be able to choose camera angles, get in-game highlights, live statistics and have DVR-like control over the game.

Rick Cordella, vice president of NBC Sports Digital Media, said:

“We are especially excited to now bring our unique and innovative SNF Extra video experience to the NFL playoffs, Pro Bowl, and Super Bowl… We don’t want to limit ourselves to people not in front of the TV. The playoffs are appointment viewing. People schedule their day around it.”

NBC reports that it typically gets 200,000-300,000 viewers on its website during the regular season, which is nothing compared to the 21 million it gets on average during its telecast. Those numbers should skyrocket today, however, for Super Bowl XLVI. The Huffington Post reports that the 2011 Super Bowl was the most watched program ever with 111 million viewers.

NBC will start its broadcast of the Super Bowl at 2 pm EST today. After a few hours of commentary, the actual game broadcast will start at 6:00 while the kick off is scheduled for 6:30.

Here’s a video from Yahoo Sports. You can also check out the live freed from NBC here.

The NFL has a tradition in which each Super Bowl is met with a Roman numeral system, for example this year Super Bowl 46 is titled Super Bowl XLVI, there’s just one problem with that setup it turns out school aged children are completely confused by the old school numbering system.

It turns out that while many kids know the basics of Roman numbers (X, I, V, etc) they don’t understand larger numbers. Speaking to the Associated Press one mother said Roman numerals “only ever get used for things like copyrights or sporting events. which in my humble opinion harkens even further back to the gladiatorial barbaric nature of things like the Super Bowl.”

Apparently the Roman numeral system is a barbaric act rather than a way to teach children about a historically relevant numbering system, but that is of course just one mothers opinion.

While teachers only educate students about the very basics of the Roman numeral system in school these days websites such as Numericana.com pick up the slack and not surprisingly receive a ton of pageviews around Super Bowl Sunday as fans attempt to figure out which Super Bowl we are currently enjoying.

When asked why the Super Bowl hasn’t changed to a modern name numbering system an NFL historian noted that “It just kind of sounds like an inventory. ‘Inspected by Joe,’” and “Those Roman numerals, they’re almost like trophies.”

In the meantime we are nearing Super Bowl L which has some NFL officials worried that the “L” will translate to the sign for “Loser” when a persons hand is raised to their forehead in the shape of an L such as this:

Do you think the Super Bowl numbering system is archaic and needs to be changed or is it too far set in our minds to forget about?

Kickoff for Super Bowl XLVI is still hours away but that didn’t stop the New York Giants team website from announcing that they have already won the 46th annual NFL championship game.

After displaying the website page shown above the teams web portal was quickly corrected and the following explanation was given by the NFL:

“It is common practice for both teams to create web pages in advance of the conference championship games and Super Bowl. In this case, the hidden URL for the page was inadvertently available for a brief period of time while it was being positioned on the NFL server for possible post tomorrow night.”

The error was broadcast on Giants.com with the headline “The Giants are Super Bowl champions” along with an ad that led viewers to a Giants Super Bowl chapmions merchandise page.

Giants players have been talking up their win all week and so has New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady who told nearly 25,000 fans last week at a Patriots pep rally:

”We’re going to give it our best and hopefully we have a lot more people at our party next weekend.”

In the meantime extra precautions are being taken to make sure that both team websites feature the right information leading up to Super Bowl XLVI.

Are you surprised to learn about the snafu made on the Giants.com website and do you think the New York Giants are going all the way this year with that page being placed back online after the game has ended?

As we head into the Super Bowl every company and their marketing teams are doing their very best to get their products in front of as many eyes as they possibly can and spinning everything they do with some sort of Super Bowl theme.

Even more so than previous years these companies and their marketing people are looking to all of the social media services to be their ace in the hole when it comes to getting their message out to “the people” but just as with previous years there are some companies that are falling all over themselves to show how badly they still don’t understand how social media works.

At the head of the list this year, so far anyway, is Toyota as they try to make their Camry brand of car model a hot trending topic on Twitter. The problem is that they are acting more as a mass spammer instead of a company looking to communicate with current and potential consumers; and as Drew Olanoff over at The Next Web points out they seem to be getting a helping hand from Twitter itself.

In what is probably the worst Twitter promotion I’ve seen on the platform since the company launched in 2006, Toyota has created a slew of accounts and is spamming people about what it is calling the “Camry Effect a Friend’ Giveaway!”. The worst part is that they’re all verified accounts, so while Twitter isn’t involved in the promotion, someone at the company definitely knows about it.

All the Toyota CamryEffects accounts seem to be concentrating replying on any message steaming through Twitter that even reference the Super Bowl or either of the teams. The replies by various of the Toyota CamryEffect verified accounts are not about creating a conversation but instead to steer people to their Win a Camry page.

In typical fashion the irritated Twitter users are reporting the Toyota accounts for spamming but nothing is being done by Twitter to reign this abuse by suspending the offending accounts, which is the company’s typical action when any other company or person is reported for spamming.

Traffic is already a little backed up in Indianapolis due to the thousands of football fans who are flocking to the city for Super Bowl XLVI, but last night thing’s were at a complete standstill thanks to 50 Cent and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The boxing champ, who just announced that he’d be fighting Miguel Cotto in his next fight on May 5, decided it would be a good idea to do some promotion in downtown Indianapolis. Mayweather, 50 Cent, and the rest of the entourage drove around in a decked out bus that was painted with Mayweather’s Twitter handle.

The bus would occasional stop so that 50 Cent and Mayweather could greet fans. When it did, traffic also stopped because the bus was so large that no one could get around.

A spectator told The Post Game:

“Every time it stopped, the traffic would immediately begin to back up because cars couldn’t get around. For the most part Mayweather stayed well inside, but a couple of times he leaned out and spoke with the fans. It didn’t take long for the cars to be backed up in every direction and there were times when the roads were packed in every direction and no one could move.”

Here’s a video of the promotional stunt.

Boxing fans were disappointed to hear that Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao wouldn’t be squaring off on May 5th so it looks like the WBC welterweight champion is doing everything he can to hype his fight with Cotto.

Do you think 50 Cent and Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s bus trip through downtown Indianapolis was a good way to promote the fight?

The Super Bowl is right around the corner and there’s expected to be a much larger number of people watching this year, 173 Million people to be precise which is the most in the last eight years.

According to a study, a mass majority of viewers will be using their mobile phones quite a bit during the big game. The past couple weeks, ads have been popping up on Youtube such as the one with Comedian Jerry Seinfeld in an Acura commercial or Matthew Broderick in a Ferris Bueller themed Honda commercial.

Via Mashable:

“Nearly half of Super Bowl XLVI viewers will check their mobile device as many as 10 times during the game, and almost a third of viewers under age 45 will watch the game “with device in hand.” More than 80% of viewers say they’ll use their mobile device during the game at least as much as they did during last year’s Super Bowl.

“That’s all according to a recent survey by research firm Harris Interactive. The study was commissioned by the mobile marketing company Velti, and shows that fans are increasingly reaching beyond just their in-person friends and the game broadcast itself for Super Bowl updates and interaction.”

These findings aren’t too surprising considering the growth of smartphones and the ability to easily read or update Twitter or Facebook through various apps. This is definitely good news for advertisers as people will definitely be talking about their commercials on social networks. Whether good or bad, people will talk about it and the success of the commercial truly lies with the people.

Who are you rooting for in the Super Bowl?

Due to the presence of the Super Bowl and it propensity to attract the worst in human nature, the Indiana Legislature passed tough laws against human trafficking in time for the event.

Speaking about the law State Sen. Randy Head said,

“The Super Bowl is a huge human trafficking event. They’re running sophisticated rings — trading girls from city to city.”

The Super Bowl tend to attract various types of organized crime and different gangs. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children estimates 10,000 prostitutes were brought to Miami for the Super bowl in 2010.

Head say that Indiana will not tolerate the exploitation of women for a sporting event. he said that the law was meant to send their message to all the pimps and johns out there.

The new law extends the definition of sex trafficking and increases penalties. There are also new training recommendations for hotel employees and cab drivers. The employees can look for warning signs in possible victims. Experts say red flags include young girls, dressed inappropriately, who seem quiet, insecure and avoid eye contact. They also say it’s suspicious when this profile of a girl checks into a hotel with no luggage.

Linda Smith who is the president and founder of Shared Hope International, a non-profit which deals with the issue had nothing but praise for Governor Mitch Daniels and the legislature.

She said,

“What they did is amazing. I met with the governor less than two months ago. He met with the legislature that same week. They fast-tracked a piece of legislation to warn the traffickers – this is not a good place to do business. We’ve got a long way to go, but they made a strong first statement at a perfect time because a lot of people will now know Indianapolis is now watching. Buyers might now think twice before they buy.”

Smith said that it is precisely this type of law passed at the right time that raises the issue to a national cause and gets the country thinking about exploited women and children.

She said,

“The Super Bowl — or any large sports game — always draws traffickers and they bring the product line because there are a lot of men that are used to buying commercial sex around these events. Unfortunately, it draws minors as a product line. People bring in kids. So what has happened in Indianapolis is absolutely amazing. The leadership standing up saying – we’re going to send a message to traffickers saying we’re not a good place for you to be bringing kids or vulnerable women to sell.”

Do you think the Indiana Legislature stepped up at the right time?

Governor Mitch Daniels signed the legislation today making Indiana the country’s 23rd Right To Work State. Union activists picketed outside Lucas Oil Stadium, home to the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Indiana is the first state in the Industrial mid west know as the Rust Belt to sign Right to Work legislation. The legislation bans the signing of union contracts that require dues from nonmembers.

Both sides were lining up to fight for their respective side of the law. Republicans were already touting lists of businesses that are making plans to move to Indiana and existing businesses that are planning on ratcheting up hiring. Democrats are planning to make this THE issue of the campaign in 2012 to take back the Statehouse and allow the law to be repealed.

Daniels did not attend the public bill signing as is customary with legislation of this magnitude.

He said in a statement,

“This law won’t be a magic answer, but we’ll be far better off with it. I respect those who have objected, but they have alarmed themselves unnecessarily: No one’s wages will go down, no one’s benefits will be reduced and the right to organize and bargain is untouched and intact.”

Senate President Pro Tempore David Long, R-Fort Wayne, said a company in Noble County, is

“planning now to remain in Indiana instead of going to Alabama and a company from Michigan was planning to go to a ‘right to work’ state in the South. When they saw what was happening here, (they) invited the state to bid. . . . We are now in consideration for those jobs.”

Do you agree with Right To Work legislation?

The Puppy Bowl is back for the 8th consecutive year. The very best in canine talent will compete this Sunday on the on the grand gridiron of Animal Planet Stadium.

This year, Animal Planet has enlisted the help of a group of pig cheerleaders who will “ham it up” on the sidelines and a bird that will live tweet the event.

Dan Schachner, a television host, commercial actor and announcer, will also be making his debut as the Puppy Bowl referee.

Schachner said:

“My job is to make sure the puppies play a safe, clean game. I call puppy penalties, which can lead to expulsion if necessary, and I also call the touchdowns just like a football referee. And of course, there are always puppy “messes” to clean up.”

The Puppy Bowl will air on Animal Planet on Sunday, February 5th, at 3 pm.

Here are some of the starters from this year’s Puppy Bowl.

All of the competitors in the Puppy Bowl are rescues and are available for adoption. Animal Planet has a few links on its site if you are interested in adopting one of the players. According to the International Business Times, many of the puppies will have already found homes by the time the Puppy Bowl airs.

If cats are more your thing, you’ll be happy to know that the Puppy Bowl will feature a Kitty Half-Time show.
