Dallas Cowboy cheerleader Melissa Kellerman gained instant Internet Fame™ on Thanksgiving, after she was shown on TV being accidentally tackled by a 265lb footballer from her own team.

The clip (embedded below) is faintly amusing: Cowboys tight end Jason Witten catches a wide pass, before being run off the field and colliding with a blissfully unaware Kellerman. The cheerleader was thankfully unhurt, and to her credit cheerfully laughed the incident off at the time.

She might not be laughing quite so much now. After taking to Twitter to joke about the collision (sample tweets included: “Not hurtin’ today, like some of y’all thought I would be! Our TE isn’t as tough as he looks…That or I’m WAY tougher than I look. and “I’m not the best at Jason Witten trust falls. )” , it appears the Cowboys ordered her to shut down her Twitter account.

While the team has yet to comment on the matter, CNBC’s Darren Rovell reports that the 22-year-old was forced to delete her account by the organization. Which, y’know, strikes me as kind of humorless. Are they worried about Jason Witten’s man points?

She’s not the only Cowboys cheerleader in the spotlight right now: earlier this month, Buffalo Bills wide receiver David Nelson scored a touchdown and immediately ran to the opposite end of the field to present the ball to his Dallas Cowboys cheerleader girlfriend, Kelsi Reich.

This is weird and kind of Twilight Zone-esque.

An Illinois couple were driving home from a Christmas party late Saturday night when their car crashed. The husband, Dale, suffered a broken back in the crash and died at the scene. His wife, Tanya Shannon? She has not been seen since. Despite a massive search effort and sub-zero temperatures, the only clues to Shannon’s whereabouts are a trail of footprints leading from the passenger side of the car to the side of the road, where they abruptly end.

Local Sheriff Tom Templeton tells press the case is the strangest he’s encountered in 12 years, and adds that it is highly unlikely that Shannon could survive had she been exposed to the elementssince the crash:

“We have to make a decision,” Templeton said. “We can’t keep these people out there going over the same ground over and over again…Anything that’s even remotely close has been gone over several times… We were told from the family she was an extremely loving mother… For her to (just leave with no warning) would be incredibly out of character. To be out in the elements as they were that night, dressed only as she was, it’s very doubtful that you can survive terribly long.”

Templeton also posited that Shannon had been “picked up” by a driver, floating the rather frightening proposition she is being or was held against her will, as it stands to reason local emergency medical facilities have been checked for patients matching Tanya Shannon’s description.

Wetland habitats- which, according to the BBC, are particularly vulnerable to mercury runoff from mining and industry- are apparently becoming big gay bars for aquatic birds.

Scientists in Sri Lanka and Florida sought to explain why mercury seemed to be causing ibises not to have a whole bunch of adorable ibis babies with each other. They knew mercury pollution negatively impacted breeding habits and development, but the gay thing came as a total surprise. The researchers fed the birds food pellets with mercury contamination levels in line with those found in the foods the birds eat in the wild, like shrimp and crayfish. A researcher remarked:

“We knew mercury could depress their testosterone (male sex hormone) levels,” explained Dr Peter Frederick from the University of Florida, who led the study. “But we didn’t expect this.”

Not only were males affected by the contamination more likely to be tapping other male birds, they were also prone to being “ignored” by females. The BBC spoke to a US Geological Survey wildlife researcher (the USGS was not part of the study) who said mercury contamination in habitats is particularly difficult to eradicate:

“It cannot be broken down, only be moved about and transformed from one chemical form to another,” he said.

“And any effect that might reduce the productivity of a species would likely be harmful in nature.”

The researcher, Gary Heinz, said further research into the effects of mercury contamination and mating in wildlife should be undertaken.

The ‘what’ is a movie trailer for an up-coming release called Machotaildrop and is about a young man whose dream of becoming a pro skateboarder comes true as he becomes a skater for the world’s greatest skateboard company; which of course is called Machotaildrop.

From watching the trailer I’m almost reminded of the imagery of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory but on massive doses of acid. Don’t take my word for it though and have a look for yourself and see if you don’t sit there afterwards and go WTF?!?!

That video I posted of a neglected girlfriend breaking her boyfriend’s Xbox 360? Probably fake.

This video of a neglected girlfriend breaking her boyfriend’s PS3? Holy crap, could actually be real. This unnamed girl reached the end of her tether when she found her layabout, jobless boyfriend playing games at 3am. According to her commentary, this sort of happens a lot.

If this is fake, then I’ll say this much: it’s certainly better acted than the previous video. There are plenty of F-bombs (so NSFW), which also makes me believe this is the real thing. And then the fact the dude is playing Ghostbusters at 3am makes me think it isn’t again.

The needy failure-at-life above is an anonymous Xbox widow who became sick and tired of her boyfriend’s gaming habits.

Her solution? To rationally discuss the issue with her partner like an adult take revenge on her boyfriend’s Xbox 360. Why? Because he had the BLOODY CHEEK AND TEMERITY to play games, instead of anoint her feet.

So, with a video camera rolling, our antiheroine delivers a wide-eyed rant before attacking her beau’s console with a golf club, swinging her spindly little arms with all her might.

Remember the Japanese guy who fell for a 2D girl from a PlayStation 2 game, and would subsequently hump body-pillows bearing her image? Well, this story is a bit like that, except even weirder.

This particular tale is also set in Japan, if you can believe such a thing, and involves a man known as “Sal9000,” who has just married Nene Anegasaki, an entirely fictional character from the Nintendo DS dating sim Love Plus. Nene is one of three girls in the game, so she faced some stiff competition for Sal9000′s affections (now, presumably, she regularly faces a stiff Sal9000).

Not only that, but Sal has a bit of a reputation amongst videogame characters as a player. BoingBoing’s video report mentions that he’s enjoyed a long string of videogame romances (Ms. Pac-Man was suspiciously unavailable for comment), but that Nene has finally won his heart.

A cruel hoax at a Burlington Coat factory in Columbus, Ohio ended in a messy riot.

A woman arrived at the store in a Hummer limo, announcing that she’d won the lottery and offering to cover tabs totaling up to $500. Police likened the scene to the devastation after Hurricane Katrina, and say 500 people crowded the store while 1,000 waited outside as recession-strapped consumers fought to take advantage of Linda Brown’s generous offer.

Before the hoax was even revealed, two dozen police officers were called in to quell the unrest sparked by the woman, who claimed to have won 1.5 million dollars. One desperate shopper said that she didn’t need clothes, but help paying her rent, for which Brown wrote out a check. As cashiers rang sale after sale, Brown left in her limo to withdraw funds to cover the large scale shopping spree- but returned empty handed. The situation predictably worsened, with the large crowds expecting free things and not willing to leave empty handed. Shoppers began throwing merchandise on the floor and looting.

When the limo driver realized he wouldn’t be paid for the debacle either, he turned Brown in to the police. She was charged with aggravated menacing, misuse of a 911 system and causing false alarms. She has not yet been charged in relation to the riot at the store, pending a mental health evaluation.

Was it TMI or a welcome, candid look into women’s workplace issues?

Penelope Trunk, of The Brazen Careerist, tweeted to her now-19,000 followers during a work function that she was currently miscarrying. Like, that second. Trunk said:

I’m in a board meeting. Having a miscarriage. Thank goodness, because there’s a f***ed-up 3-week hoop-jump to have an abortion in Wisconsin.

The tweet quickly divided readers. Even feminist snark blog Jezebel was scornful, equating the post to hearing about a male colleague’s hemorrhoids. And the most surprising (to me) outrage is coming from pro-choice, feminist bloggers. Jezebel’s Lindsay goes on to chastise Trunk for her levity:

And, unfortunately for everyone, now that this has gone national, the context and way in which Trunk framed this confirms the worst and most fantastical ideas of the anti-choice movement: that women (especially career women!) who have abortions all do so casually and callously on their lunch breaks, the way one might get a manicure. If Trunk thinks she’s done anything to help women in Wisconsin get better access to abortions (her defensive post asks readers to donate to Planned Parenthood), she obviously doesn’t know anything about how the anti-choice movement works.

Okay, I have to admit here that my views on abortion are gray to say the least. And irrelevant to this post. But I truly found that stance shocking because- well, whatever happened to on demand and without apology? If, out of a professional context, a woman has to tread lightly, what progress have we made? (In a follow-up post, Trunk describes the “hoops” she alludes to earlier, using her influence to spotlight the issue many midwestern women face seeking abortions.)

While Trunk may have breached boundaries of professional etiquette (really, who wouldn’t have felt like a total schmuck banging on about ROI only to find out later the person next to them was experiencing a minor medical emergency?), she’s doubtlessly helped along a few women who were feeling guilt at their own pregnancy-ending ambivalence, whether due to miscarriage or abortion. Penelope Trunk is in a strange spot because professionally, because she focuses largely on the convergence of career and lifestyle/life. I doubt liveblogging a pregnancy loss is the next big Twitter trend, but did Trunk “go too far” in her candor? Or did she help destigmatize an event that affects the majority of the female workforce at some point in their careers?

It’s one thing to go on a nice walking holiday through beautiful Poland but it is another thing altogether to have that interrupted by some big hairy beast that no-one seems to be able to identify.

Such is the case for Piotr Kowalski, 27, from Warsaw who was enjoying his time in the Tatra mountains when one day he was peacefully filming an innocent mountain goat only to have is attention caught by some huge hairy creature emerging from behind some rocks.

"I saw this huge ape-like form hiding behind the rocks. When I saw it it was like being struck by a thunderbolt," he told the daily Superexpress.

"Coming from Warsaw, I never really believed the local stories of a wild mountain ape-man roaming the slopes. But, now I do."

At this point Yeti experts are headed to Poland to try and verify that this beast exists but in the meantime I’ll let you decide from what pictures we have.

Going green might have different meanings for different people and it seems that when it comes to the homes we build people have equally different ideas of what to build them out of. Here’s ten different homes that have been built using materials we wouldn’t commonly think of when it comes to creating our living space.

Straw and Mud – in third world countries this might be a common building material but it isn’t something that we might think of when building our next abode.

Boats – while this might be an ideal material to use if you live on the coast I don’t think it would be the top material to use elsewhere.

Garbage – I guess you could consider this the ultimate in recycling although it isn’t something I would want to live in.

Newspapers – if using all your garbage to build a home isn’t quite your thing you could always use those leftover newspapers

Airplanes – if a boat home isn’t up your alley you could always try a home made from an airplane

Glass Bottles – then again if airplanes don’t do it for you you could always use those liquor bottles they serve on them but if your frequent flyer miles won’t get you enough of them you could use any old glass bottles.

Plastic Bottles – if glass isn’t your thing there is always the plastic variety

Beer Cans – can’t find enough glass or plastic? Well there is always the beer can route

Rubber Tires – I’m sure this isn’t what they mean when they talk about “the rubber room”

Doors – and finally a good use for all those doors that keep hitting you on the ass.

The New York Times brings us the story of Tokyo resident “Nisan” (not his real name), who has finally found true love at the age of 37. Nothing unusual in that, per se; people fall in love all the time. But stop us if this starts to sound weird: the object of Nisan’s affections isn’t, well, real. She’s not even 3D, in fact, but a 2D game character. Oh yeah, and she’s ten years old.

The lady child in question is Nemu, a leading character in a PC/PlayStation 2 game called Da Capo. Nisan regularly takes his collection of Nemu body-pillow covers to karaoke or to restaurants, and generally spoils her rotten. It’s a mighty strange tale, but also kind of sad.

Nisan did have a real girlfriend once, though he says that she dumped him. Now, however, he’s found a new, slightly flatter object for his affections, and has big plans for their future together:

“I have real feelings for her. [...] When I die, I want to be buried with her in my arms.”

And they say romance is dead.
