I guess it is to be expected but I for one am getting really sick and tired of all these studies that pop up around Twitter spouting off who it is popular with this group of people, stupid to another group, or dangerous to kiddies of all ages. However far be it from us here at The Inquisitr to prejudge the validity of suck moronic studies much like the newest one from Edison Research titled: Twitter Usage in America.

The big buzz out of this study; that used 1,753 Americans as its baseline, is that African Americans love Twitter or at least 24 percent of them do.

Wow.

Are you impressed?

Well how about a couple of these little tidbits:

87 percent of Americans are aware of Twitter (in contrast to Facebook’s 88 percent)

7 percent (17 million) actively use Twitter (in contrast to 41 percent who maintain a Facebook profile)

47 percent of regular users of Twitter update their status messages

51 percent of active Twitter users follow brands, companies or products.

Like I said – pointless but hey at least you are informed, right?

hat tip to The Wrap

The exponential growth of the internet never fails to amaze me.

Every year, you think it couldn’t possibly be more influential, or huge, or humanity uniting, and then you see videos like this one. Plus, it’s done in a soothing yet hip color scheme with fun graphics included so you can wrap your head around figures like “billion,” “trillion,” and “Europe.”

If you dig stats, check out the video below on the crazy strides made by the internet in general in even just the last month. (For instance, 247 billion e-mails are sent every day. 200 billion of those are spam. And why is Facebook so slow to load sometimes? Because 6 million other people are all trying to be on it, too, every minute.)

I came across this humorous infographic via Zee over at The Next Web and wanted to share it with you. Now I say humorous because some of the stats that go with the graphic seem a little wonky to me.

133,000,000 million blogs

35% of Journalists are now Bloggers

48% of Bloggers are in the US

66% of bloggers are males

1/4 earn $100k+ a year

Aside from “personal musings”, technology bloggers are the most prominent

75% of bloggers are college graduates

The idea that tech bloggers are the most prominent isn’t something we really need to hear given that most of the people in the tech blogosphere already have bloated enough egos, they don’t need this added hot air. Apparently Zee has emailed Intact, the people behind the infographic, for some clarification on the stats that went into the infographic but in the meantime here it is for you in its full color glory.

27.3 million Twitter messages per day – that’s how much you guys are yakking out there on Twitter. With the 5 billionth Twitter message reportedly posted last month some suggest we could see an annual yakking rate of 10 billion Twitter messages a year.

Much of this data is courtesy of a recent report from Pingdom who studied Twitter traffic for a period of three weeks (October 21 to November 11) to find out things like Twitter messages per hour, per day, and when we posted messages the most.

Per Hour

- highest number of Twitter messages during the report time period: 1,841,289

- lowest number of messages during the report period: 566,854

Per Day

Average Per Hour – based on US EST

The above graph is shifted to show US eastern time and clearly displays a dip during the night-time hours in the US. However as Brian Solis noted in his post on this, Comscore data shows that half of Twitter users live outside of the US. In this case the morning rise in Pingdom’s data could also reflect afternoon and evening activity in Europe and other parts of the world.

Regardless all this data just goes to show we love nothing better than to be blathering at 140 characters and our love affair shows no signs of slowing down.

Continuing are look at the 2009 MLB regular season today we focus in on the pitching individual stat leaders.

Wins

American League

CC Sabathia New York Yankees 19

Justin Verlander Detroit Tigers 19

Felix Hernadez Seattle Mariners 19

The lack of a twenty game winner seems rather curious. In fact this is the first time in 14 years that the American League did not feature a 20 game winner. It also seems curious that none of these three men will likely win the AL Cy Young Award.

National League

Adam Wainwright St. Louis Cardinals 19

Chris Carpenter St. Louis Cardinals 17

Jorge De La Rosa Colorado Rockies 16

The fact that neither league produced a 20 game winner seems to indicate a change from a league built around starting pitching to one built around relief pitching.

ERA

American League

Zack Geinke Kansas City Royals 2.16

Hernandez 2.48

Roy Halladay Toronto Blue Jays 2.79

based on these numbers, and the fact that he is leading two of them seems to suggest that Hernandez should be the favorite to win the AL Cy Young. That probably won’t happen, but he had a great year.

National League

Carpenter 2.24

Tim Linecum San Francisco Giants 2.48

Jair Jurrjens Atlanta Braves 2.60

Strike outs

American League

Verlander 269

Grienke 242

Jon Lester Boston Red Sox 225

National League

Lincecum 261

Javier Vasquez Atlanta Braves 238

Dan Harren Arizona Diamondbacks 223

Saves

American League

Brian Fuentes Los Angeles Angels 48

Joe Nathan Minnesota Twins 47

Mariano Rivera New York Yankees 44

National League

Heath Bell San Diego Padres 42

Francisco Cordero Cincinnati Reds 39

Ryan Franklin St. Louis Cardinals 38

Ever wondered what kind of social media juice you might have from using Twitter? Curious as to what your stats are on the service? Then Twitalyzer might be just the thing you are looking for. I first heard about the new Twitter stats service earlier from Chris Pirillo as he posted about it for his geek community to check out.

At first I resisted the obvious ego patting that comes from seeing oneself rising in the glory that is the Twittersphere but that lasted for all of about five minutes. From the results of the analysis I maybe should have resisted a little longer – like forever. As you can see I’m not doing so well in the Twitter juice arena

I guess I have a little bit of work to do but in case you’re interested in finding out about your own Twitter juice just head over to the Twitalyzer site and have at it.

About 2 months back we decided to try a 2.0 widget called Who’s Amung Us. The premise is simple enough: you embed their code, and you can track traffic live on your site.

The service isn’t a full blown analytics package, the best you get is a running total of live stats, but it fits in nicely on the flip side of Google Analytics; it’s not a full blown alternative, but it’s not half way in between like a range of other services either. It does a basic task, and in theory it should be good at it.

I know: free service, I shouldn’t complain. But this is a service with an A-list recommendations list. I don’t begrudge the fact that there are times when the service won’t work, or it has to go down for maintenance, but more and more lately its been as useless as tits on a bull.

Here’s one shot from today, I missed getting the time out shots:

The Who’s Amung Us blog hasn’t been updated since September 23, so what ever is going wrong isn’t being communicated, and that’s a sure sign that things aren’t great at any service, particularly when the problems have gotten worse over October into this month.

A couple of people have suggested alternative services on Twitter, if you have any recommendations let us know. I’m not necessarily against paying for a service, but I also don’t want load time issues for running a live script either. Free would be better again.

Who’s Amung Us = fail.
