New Star Trek Movie Gets Really Geeky USB Solution

I’m all for finding new delivery methods for multimedia, but seriously? A 4GB Starfleet insignia USB Drive? It’s one of the strangest, yet oddly “geek sheik” ways I’ve seen for delivering a DVD to the masses.

The USB drives are individually numbered which should send thousands of Trekkers on a scavenger hunt for the USB Drive numbered “one.”

The drives are DRM protected, however it can run on up to 5 registered devices and users can burn the movie to a DVD for more practical playback.

The special edition releases are $29 each, of course that price can’t replace the bragging rights Trekkers will have over their “friends” in their mom’s basement. [Gizmodo]

Star Trek Online now taking closed beta applications

The very anticipated MMORPG Star Trek Online from Cryptic is now accepting applications for the Star Trek Online Closed Beta. If you have a 6-month or lifetime Champions Online subscription you are already accepted in to the Beta (you lucky son of a gun!)

To apply for the Star Trek Online Beta register and fill out a short survey. The lucky participants will be randomly drawn and can join the Star Trek Online Closed Beta at the end of the year.

I’m not sure if this will be as big as Star Wars The Old Republic, but it deserves a chance.

Wolverine, Star Trek and how piracy destroyed them both

Almost a month before Wolverine hit the movie theaters a workprint copy of the movie was “leaked” onto the Web. It was a copy that was half finished as far as the special effects were concerned with green screens and wire framed character models visible for all the world to see. The great fight scene at the top of the nuclear reactor was more stickman like drawing that anything to do with the actors. In the end it was an incomplete movie that really only left the majority of those that watched it wanting to see the real thing.

In contrast Star Trek made it to the theater without a hitch and not a single “leak” to be found on the web. There were no FBI agents busting down doors and seizing servers or freelance reviewers losing their jobs because they reviewed something that they shouldn’t have. Everything was above board and unlike Wolverine the Star Trek movie became the darling of the weekend critics; which will last until the next great movie hits.

On one hand you have a great action movie without any pretentions of greatness getting panned and making movie executives fall all over themselves crying about how piracy was going to ruin the movie. On the other side of the coin you have a movie that made it to the theater with movie executives pleased as punch that they had kept those nasty criminal pirates from ruining yet another movie.

As we make our way through the weeks following the big weekend releases of both movies we have some serious dollar figures that obviously will show that those terrible pirate must have ruin the success of Wolverine while letting Star Trek surge ahead. There is only one problem with that assumption – it’s full of crap.

On opening weekend box office dollar figures we have the following:

Wolverine earned more than $85 million
Star Trek netted $75 million

So there you have it folks. The movie that caused the most uproar over piracy in recent time actually earned more money than the other hot movie that garnered critic praise and not a peep about piracy. In the process an ISP data host lost millions of dollars and had their reputation severely impacted. As well a long time FOX freelance movie reviewer has lost his livelihood. All because of the pirating of an incomplete film that ended up earning more money on opening weekend box office that the golden boy movie.

Someone care to tell me exactly how piracy is hurting the movie industry?

Star Trek Tops Box Office with $76.5M Opening Weekend

Star Trek was the #1 movie at the box office, earning $76.5 million in its opening weekend.

Paramount Pictures estimated the Star Trek movie would make about $50 million for the weekend, but strong reviews and online buzz helped carry it past the estimates by more than 50%. The latest in the Star Trek movie franchise made $72.5 million from Friday to Sunday, plus $4 million in pre-midnight screenings Thursday, Paramount said Saturday, including a record $8.2 million in IMAX showings.

Star Trek hit the mark with moviegoers by appealing to younger viewers who may not have been familiar with the original 1960’s TV series in that there was lots of background material on the characters, yet veteran Trekkies were impressed by how much of the essence of the series was included. People liked it so much that it recieved 96 percent positive reviews on the critical Rotten Tomatoes Web site.

With Star Trek in the lead, here are the top 10 movies at the box office this weekend:

1. Star Trek – $76.5 million

2. X-Men Origins: Wolverine – $27 million

Star Trek review – No spoilers

I saw the latest Star Trek movie yesterday. To give it a fair review I thought I would sleep on it, because I was so excited after leaving the cinema yesterday, it would just have been one praise after the other.

I’m sorry to say, that one night of sleep didn’t change that at all. With a 96% review at Rotten Tomatoes and 8.4 on IMDB I’m confident it will make about $92 million at the box office this weekend.

“Set your phasers to stunning.”

The awesomsauce: You don’t have to be a Trekkie to watch this movie. You don’t need to know anything about the Star Trek universe, characters or technology. You’ll miss some references (I noticed a few lines from “Wrath of Khan”) and some Kirk-Spock moments, but that’s details. The story is great, the jokes hilarious and the special effects are very well made without been too unreal.

The actors are spot on. Especially Zachary Quinto (who probably is used to playing emotionless on Heroes) nails Spock. You don’t see Sylar (bad guy from TV-series Heroes), you see Spock in him. Chris Pine makes a great James T. Kirk. In a few scenes you can actually see him make some of the classic Kirk faces and movements. I think he has spent many hours watching William Shatner’s Capt. Kirk. The same goes for Karl Urban. His Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy is simply brilliant. I can see DeForest Kelley’s Bones immediately and of course you get a “Dammit I’m a doctor not a *something*”-line.

JJ Abrams succesfully reboots the Star Trek franchise!

The less good: I’m not going to waste many letters on this. If you are a hardcore Trekkie I’m sure you don’t like the engine room of the USS Enterprise. The warp drive looks like something from gas/hydro plant, but c’mon that doesn’t change the awesomeness of this movie. I did miss one thing. The classic Star Trek theme. When you see the Star Trek logo/badge you always expect it, but soundtrack composer Michael Giacchino has a surprise up his sleeve. You can actually recognize a few classic notes from time to time. (and yes the classic theme can be heard later on in the movie)

To sum up: This movie brought several tears of coolness I’ve only experienced a few times before (as Superman rescued Lois Lane in the plane, so good to hear the Superman theme again or when I heard the Indy theme in Indy 4). Go this the Star Trek movie and you’ll feel just like me – JJ Abrams; we want to see this crew’s next space adventure ASAP!

I give it 10 out of 10, just because I’m still thinking of this movie.

*UPDATE* Star Trek made $72.5 million in North American ticket sales in its first weekend. Not enough to beat Wolverine’s $85 million record last weekend, but I doubt Star Trek will drop 68% next weekend as Wolverine did this weekend.

There are all kinds of people who would consider themselves to be die-hard fans of everything Star Trek, even though others might have different words used to describe them. They go to all the Star Trek conferences decked out in their best Star Trek clothes. They can probably recite every line from every show. They will get into heated battles over which was the best series and just how much of an idiot Shatner is and Picard is the best USS Enterprise captain bar none.

However they all pale in comparison to Tony Alleyne. Not happy with just wearing the best Star Trek costume around he also has turned his apartment in Hinckley, Leicestershire England into the coolest homage to Star Trek. As you can see from the photo above and the ones below he hasn’t missed a trick.

As I wrote the other day the new Star Trek Movie will probably disappoint a lot of Trekkies because of its fast pace and cool special effects, but I’m pretty sure this Star Trek USB Communicator could give them some relief.

The Star Trek Communicator from Dream Cheeky is a VoIP/Skype phone with 21 original sound effects. It has velcro on the back, so you can mount it where everyone can see it. With a simple flick of the wrist you are ready to receive any incoming signals from green female space slaves to your Star Wars-loving friends, who doesn’t have anything remotely as cool as this.

Personally I’m more of a Star Trek The Next Generation and beyond fan, so I’m still waiting for that Starfleet insignia badge. I just have to touch it and it instantly knows who I want to communicate with.

Trekkies bash new Star Trek movie as “watchable”

Trekkies or Trekkers (as we they are now known according to Fanboys) bash the new Star Trek movie according to The Onion. Trekkers are upset that the Klingon dialogue is translated, so non-Trekkers can understand it. “They didn’t spend years studying an imaginary language.”

The movie is also too well-made. “The state-of-the-art CGI, fast pace and alien battle scenes that don’t just look like two out of shape guys in bad make-up fighting awkwardly.”

Remember this is not your father’s Star Trek. I’m still going to watch this movie (I didn’t study Klingon for 5 years to watch a few movies about Borg and Zefram Cochran.)

It is amazing sometimes the different ideas that marketing companies can come up with to promote something. Whether it be from stupid products to this summer’s hottest movies there are some cool ideas as well as some down right strange ones. The hype surrounding the impending release of the new Star Trek movie is no different.

Work starts on new Star Trek Movie sequel

Despite not hitting the big screen until May, Paramount Pictures is so confident the new Star Trek movie will be a success they’ve started work on a sequel.

Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof will pen the screenplay, and J.J. Abrams will produce according to Variety. Abrams hasn’t been locked in to direct yet.

“Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month,” Alex Kurtzman said. “With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We’ll be ambitious about what we’ll do.”

The script is planned to be finished by Christmas with the movie to released in the northern summer of 2011.

I have been kind of ambivalent about the new Star Trek movie coming out after all I remember when the original one was released and it’s kind of hard to think of Star Trek being anything else but Shatner and Nimoy. So when I saw this trailer show up I figured what the hell let’s see how badly they’re going to screw it up.

All I can say is I think I am a Star Trek fan again and hopefully the whole movie is as good as what they are teasing us with.

Star Trek The Next Generation Cast Reunited on the Family Guy

The cast of Star Trek The Next Generation has reunited for an episode of the Family Guy.

In Not All Dogs Go to Heaven, the crew of the second Starship Enterprise: Patrick Stewart, Levar Burton, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, Wil Wheaton, Denise Crosby, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes provide guest voices as the Griffin family heads to the annual Quahog “Trek” convention reports THR.

“Stewie blows a fuse when he doesn’t get a chance to ask his favorite ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ cast members any questions,” the show notes read. “He devises a plan, builds a transporter and beams the entire cast to his bedroom so they can spend a fun-filled day together in Quahog.”

The episode will air March 29.

Fantasy Island’s Ricardo Montalban Dead at 88

Actor Ricardo Montalban, best known for his role in TV series Fantasy Island has died in Los Angeles aged 88.

Ricardo Montalban started his career in the 1940’s opposite some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Clark Gable and Lana Turner, but came to world wide fame starring as Mr. Roarke in the television series Fantasy Island from 1977 to 1984. He also played Khan Noonien Singh in both the 1967 Space Seed episode in the first season of Star Trek, and in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

His awards include an Emmy in 1978 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild in 1993.

Along with acting, Montalban was known for his community role within the Latino community, founding in 1970 the Nosotros Foundation, a nonprofit that aimed to improve the image and increase employment of Latinos in Hollywood.

Montalban died Wednesday morning at his Los Angeles home of complications related to old age.

Winona Ryder rushed to hospital with mystery illness

Gen X actress and reformed shoplifter Winona Ryder has been struck by an medical emergency while on a flight to London.

Ryder was taken to hospital near London’s Heathrow Airport. According to a statement from British Airways “The captain of BA282, which was traveling from LA to Heathrow, requested a priority landing as a female passenger required medical attention. The passenger was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The plane touched down shortly before noon UK time.” Cabin crew are said to have looked after Ryder while on board the flight.

A later statement from Winona Ryder’s spokeswoman called the emergency a “precautionary measure” and that Ryder she was quickly discharged.

“She did fall ill on a flight and as a precautionary measure, was taken to a hospital,” said a spokeswoman for Ryder. “She was there maybe an hour and was released. The bottom line is she is in good health.”

Ryder next appears on screen in the new Star Trek movie.

The first shot of the new look Starship Enterprise from the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie is out (picture above).

If it looks like the old Enterprise, just more modern looking, there is a reason. Abrams told Entertainment Weekly (also image source) that “If you’re going to do Star Trek there are many things you cannot change. The Enterprise is a visual touchstone for so many people. So if you’re going to do the Enterprise, it better look like the Enterprise, because otherwise, what are you doing?”

In related news, 400 lucky journalists got their first look at 4 scenes from the yet to be completed movie, with JJ Abrams and Simon Pegg doing the scene introductions.

William Shatner hates gay people…well George Takei anyway

Star Trek captain and star of Boston Legal William Shatner has given another one of his legendary rambling interviews, although in this case, what he has to say has bite.

Shatner was asked specifically about not being invited to the all male wedding of Star Trek co-star George Takei, despite most of the still living members of Star Trek being invited (including a number of members taking prominent positions).

Shatner says in the interview of Takei that: “The poor man – there’s such a sickness there. It’s so patently obvious there’s a psychosis there,” and then goes on to talk about Takei “hiding his homosexuality” and “talk about festering, not living the truth of your life.” Shatner describes Takei’s homosexuality as a “terrible terrible secret.”
