One of the larger patterns of failed relationships seems to be one of the two parties failing to see or accept that a relationship is just heading south.

If you haven’t been to that shameful place yourself, then you are likely to have seen it from a friend- or you’ve been biting your tongue and bored on the other side of a 45-minute long rumination as to why someone just hasn’t returned a call, wanting to shout “because s/he doesn’t want to!” Well, imagine what the poor friends of one lovelorn Dutch woman must have put up with while she struggled through the end of a relationship.

As is common in situations like that of the woman arrested for placing an alleged 65,000 calls to the target of her affection, the scenario is a bit he said/she said. According to the 62-year-old victim, the two were never romantically interlinked. But the 42-year-old woman tells a different tale, alleging she and the man had a relationship and that the calls were not entirely inappropriate.

Hague prosecution spokeswoman Nicolette Stoel confirmed that the perp claimed the pair had had a legitimate relationship at some point, but an Early Show anchor did the math on the supposed harassment, and if the numbers work out, it paints a fairly creepy picture of the constant stalking:

“Early Show” co-anchor Jeff Glor reported her calls works out to 1,250 times a week, 178 times a day or about once every eight minutes. Glor added that calculation is based on if she weren’t sleeping.

The court ordered the woman not to contact her possibly former lover again. Have you ever been the target of an overzealous ex?

I realize that everyone is enamored with this whole location thing and just drooling over being able to share not only what they are doing but where they are doing it.

The only problem is, as we saw with the now shuttered PleaseRobMe site, that we seem to be losing an common sense as to exactly how potentially dangerous t his insane amount of sharing can be.

In our rush to share ad naseum we forget that there is information going along with that cute little check-in or photo we just uploaded. It is this danger that the site called I Can Stalk U is purporting to point out to the world.

The principal is pretty simple. Just about every single digital camera being sold has the ability to to add all kinds of data to the image (called EXIF metadata) and one of those pieces of data is what is termed as geotagging data. This means that the GPS location data of where you took the picture becomes part of that image’s metadata and with just a few lines of code that information can be read by anyone.

Using that information as their base developers Ben Jackson, Larry Pesce, and a security research team called Mayhemic Labs created the I Can Stalk U site. Using data from the public Twitter stream they separate out the messages that have images associated with them and then in apparently near real-time re-posts them to the I Can Stalk U site but edited to show the location data.

According to Sarah Perez the site developers justify doing this under the guise of it being a warning to people about just what they are really sharing.

The site’s authors explain that anyone, by analyzing your photos, could find out where you live, who else lives there, your commuting patterns, where you go for lunch, who you go with and more.

But who would be interested in all this data?

The developers say “anyone” – from “a government to a nosy neighbor.” That may sound a little tin foil hat to you, but there is some value in understanding the nature of geotagged and how it reveals your location when shared instantly via social networking sites. If you’re a high-profile person, like a celebrity or executive, for example, you may not want this information to be public. More importantly, perhaps, if you’re someone who’s been stalked in the past, or have a dangerous ex-significant other of some kind, you may also need to take additional precautions.

I get the warning people of the possible dangers of oversharing but personally I think this was the wrong way to go about it.

Finally I’m not alone.

In post today Michelle Greer, one very smart woman, came out and laid it on the line - there is the potential for geolocation to become one of our worst nightmares. Ever since the whole idea of geolocation first started to be mentioned and before it became a game I have been saying that this might not be such a good idea.

Anyway Michelle starts off her post with a personal story of geolocation going wrong and how scary it was t hat some person out there could follow you around via friending people on all these social media services, including the geolocation oriented ones, and there was nothing you could do about it.

She continues with this bit of a warning

Here’s the scoop: it doesn’t matter if you think you aren’t going to be stalked. By accepting friend requests from people who you don’t know in any way shape or form, you are jeopardizing yourself along with all of your friends. Why? Imagine I hang out with Person A a lot. Person A befriends Person Q who just so happens to be someone who makes me feel generally unsafe or uncomfortable. Person Q can generally assume that they can hang around along the peripheral of Person A and eventually, I’m going to show up. Thanks a lot, Person A. You’ve just put me in harm’s way because you like the idea of having a million friends on FourSquare. That sucks.

I’m going to go a little further out on this limb and predict that at some point someone is going to be badly hurt and it will be directly attributable to these geolocation games and services. You can slough it off all you want and make fun of me all you want but trust me – it will happen. then when it does maybe being the mayor of some coffeeshop and a collection of digital badges that are worth squat won’t seem all that much fun.

No one likes to be that chick and Mrs. Eddie Cibrian, model Brandi Glanville, complained to press that LeAnn Rimes is stalking her better half. Ouch.

Back in March, Us Weekly outed the alleged clandestine couple as they snuck around on the set of Lifetime Movie “Northern Lights.” According to Brandi, LeAnn- herself a married woman- can’t stay away from Eddie, who reportedly had to change his number to dodge her incessant calls and texts. Mrs. Cibrian claims:

“LeAnn is a stalker. She refuses to leave us alone – it is shameful and scary. People are going to say it takes two to tango and I get that, but at some point LeAnn needs to stop asking him to dance. ”

But she didn’t stop there. In addition to her insinuation that LeAnn’s affections are misguided and not reciprocated, Brandi told Us Weekly that LeAnn’s cheating heart is really just a desperate ploy to gain headlines, saying:

“LeAnn is so desperate for fame she has left her self-respect in the gutter and doesn’t care who she hurts to get what she wants. She’s hurting my family and messing with the wrong mom. I’m a happy wife fighting for what I have.”

This afternoon, a representative for LeAnn Rimes shot back at the troubled couple in a statement, accusing them of wanting attention and press. (Being as I’d never heard of Brandi Glanville before this morning, I’d say they were pretty successful, there.) Calling the accusations “incredibly defamatory”, the rep went on to say:

“Eddie and Brandi are both on the record on this and LeAnn has kept quiet, so what does that tell you about who is after fame and press?”

LeAnn’s rep goes on to play the “high road” card, telling reporters:

“…while there are always two sides to every story, LeAnn continues to remain above the fray and chooses not to play this out in the press.”

Snap.

In a move to almost guarantee a challenge in the courts Sen. Mike Green of Raleigh County, West Virginia, introduced a bill that would see sending harassing e-mails or other computer based communications a crime. The bill was amended by the Senate Judiciary Committee to include statements posted on web pages or online forums.

So in other words – if the bill passes – you had better start watching what you say; if you live in West Virginia that is, on Facebook or any of the other social media service. After all harassment is something that can be read as many different things. The State bill says though that harassment (bullying) is the posting of untrue statements and encouraging others to spread the lies.

Civil liberties advocates question whether that goes too far.

The bill would make such statements a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500, up to six months in jail, or both. Repeat offenders would see those penalties double.

Source: Associated Press

So no more posting that your boss is an idiot if you live in West Virginia because besides getting you fired you could end up in jail.
