In slightly-bizarre-but-still-sort-of-cool news, IGN’s latest Madden NFL 11 videos reveal that President Obama himself will be appearing in EA’s football game.

The video below shows the cut-scene (complete with treacly commentary from Gus Johnson) you get for clinching the Super Bowl. Obama isn’t seen until late in the clip, but he’s there alright, congratulating the winning team on the White House lawn. It’s not a bad likeness!

Oh, and the last serving US President to appear in a videogame? I’m pretty sure it was Bill Clinton, who showed up as a playable character in NBA Jam TE (alongside Hillary, natch).

A downloadable demo for Madden NFL 11 will be made available to Xbox 360 and PlayStation owners on July 27, according to publisher EA. As previously revealed, the demo will pit the Indianapolis Colts against the New York Jets at the Jets Stadium.

There’ll be a few sparse difficulty options to meddle with (Rookie, Pro, All-Pro, All-Madden), and five-minute quarters, which is far more generous than what’s offered in EA’s FIFA demos. Only the Jets or Colts playbook will be available in the demo.

The full version of Madden NFL 11 will be released on August 10, a month before the real thing kicks off on September 9.

It’s been more than seven years since Michael Jordan appeared in an NBA game, but there’s no doubt the basketball legend is as iconic as ever. Game developer 2K Sports certainly thinks so, because it chose Jordan as this year’s cover athlete for its flagship basketball game, NBA 2K11.

While the cover of these mega-selling annual sports games is normally graced by a current star, 2K11 will feature Jordan with his trademark tongue out. And because he’s Michael Jordan, His Airness gets to appear on the cover three times. Fair enough. I think the results are pretty striking.

“This could possibly be the most highly anticipated cover art in the history of sports games,” exaggerated Jason Argent, VP of marketing for 2K Sports and Director of Outlandish Claims.

“It’s exciting to see it all come together,” said the basketball legend himself. “I am looking forward to seeing the final product, but my kids might have to give me some lessons.”

NBA 2K11 is out October 5th for Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii, PC, and as an app on the iPhone.

Even an uneducated British oik like me knows that Michael Jordan is Kind Of A Big Deal when it comes to basketball, so here’s a fun rumor: the sporting legend could be appearing on the cover of NBA 2K11.

That’s according to ESPN’s sources, and if said moles are right, Jordan will become the first ever retired player to appear on the front of a NBA 2K title. ESPN also suggests Jordan will appear in the game itself in some capacity, though this is all at the rumor stage for now.

Jordan has a history with videogames, and not an entirely positive one. He’ll always be fondly remembered as one of the stars of the NBA Jam series, but many people forget he also starred in his own absolutely terrible game for the Super Nintendo in 1994, Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City. I won’t forget, because I paid for that filth.

Madden NFL 11‘s graphics aren’t going to be a massive leap over last year’s title, if these screens are anything to go by. Yet while it’s visually similar, there’ll be something of an audio overhaul.

First up, EA has acquired Gus Johnson for the in-game commentary. If you’re unfamiliar with Mr. Johnson’s respective body of work, he seems the excitable sort. He’ll replace Tom Hammond as your play-by-play announcer for this year, and will have pundit Cris Collinsworth jabbering by his side.

You’ll also be able to hear team-specific chants, and licensed music that’s frequently played at real NFL games, such as Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” and the Sport Chant Remix of Zombie Nation’s “Kernkraft 400.”

Over at the official Madden NFL 11 site, fans have been voting for the 2009 Super Bowl playoff game they wanted to see in the demo for the next Madden. Hence, the demo for Madden NFL 11 will feature the Indianapolis Colts against the New York Jets.

The game proper will march into stores on August 10th for Xbox 360, PS2, PS3, Wii, PSP, iPod, iPhone, and other feature phones, though the demo is coming in July.

That’s the message being pushed in this Madden NFL 11 debut trailer, as voiced by Very! Dramatic! Trailer! Man!.

In its bid to address the ever-shrinking attention span of human beings everywhere, publisher EA is promising that Madden NFL 11 will cut games from 60 to 30 minutes, and ensure players spend “more time on the field, and less in the playbook.” If you actually quite enjoy being in the playbook, then tough titties, I suppose.

It also promises to make all other American Football games “obsolete”. Pretty sure Maddens 10, 9, 8, and a few others promised that but HEY HO. Here’s the trailer:

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been unveiled as the cover guy for the next Madden game.

So if you’re a Saints fan, this is the point at which you should start celebrating worrying. The Madden series has a long and ominous history – explained in greater depth here – of putting players on the cover of each annual gridiron game, only for the featured player to endure a miserable season. The “Madden Curse” usually brings about injury, massive underperforming, or a combination of both.

The irony in this? It was probably Saints fans who got Brees the Madden 11 gig, after voting in an online poll for him.

As we continue our year in review, we must also remember that this is also the end of a decade. It got me wondering about who would be the Detroit Professional of the past decade? What would the qualifications be? Should a distinction be awarded on stats, or on accomplishment? How high shall we rank popularity of fans?

They are all a part of the formula, but the sad fact here is Detroit Sports over this past decade have been rather poor. Sure three World Championships were delivered to this city, and the Detroit Tigers made a World Series experience, however the Tigers were also one of the worst team in MLB history in 2003, the Detroit Lions have been a joke for a long time, and while the Detroit Pistons looked to be on a magical run they only won one title and have regressed quickly into obscurity.

Let us take a look at this by team. Nominees from the Detroit Red Wings seems pretty easy, Captain Steve Yzerman and Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. Both delivered two Stanley Cup Championships to Detroit, while Lidstrom also won six Norris Trophy’s as the best Defenseman in the entire NHL. For the Pistons we have to go with Chauncey Billups or Ben Wallace, both were key parts of the magical Piston run, and their departure signaled the end of an era. In the case of the Lions, Kicker Jason Hanson gets nominated by default. The Tigers don’t really seem to have a nominee. No one player made a lasting impact on this team over the past 10 years. The closest thing we have to that is Curtis Granderson, so by default he is the Tigers nominee.

In the end I think we have to go with Nicklas Lidstrom of the Red Wings. For six of the past ten years he was voted to be the best at his position. He brought two Stanley Cups to Detroit, one as Captain. In fact many Red Wings fans would say that he was the single most important piece of the Red Wings organization that has won four Stanley Cup in the last 15 years.

It ain’t your grandpa’s golf game, that’s for sure. This Saturday, intrepid golfers will swap out golf carts for four-wheel drive vehicles and dune buggies and golf their way down rugged Socorro Peak on the final day of the Socorro Open in New Mexico.

Golfers begin the game teeing off at 2,500 feet. The course has one hole, a fifty-foot circle three miles down the mountain. These golf players have balls- ten, to be exact, and they have to finish with at least one. (Any balls that stay lost for twenty minutes count as a stroke.) Because of the extraordinarily rugged terrain, players are allowed to tee up for every shot, and each player is allowed three spotters to try to keep track of golf balls that are known to careen down abandoned mine shafts and into canyons.

Fancy golf bags are left in the desert dust for a driver, a five iron and laser range finders. Mike Stanley, 18-time game champion, says the hardest part is maintaining an upright stance on the uneven course. Stanley says:

“The hardest thing to do is get a stance built so you can stand and swing and not fall down. You pile up rocks. You dig with your feet. Anything to try to have some stable footing so you can swing and hit the ball.”

‘Playboy’ Buddy Rose Death

The cause of “Playboy” Buddy Rose’s death has not yet been determined. Family friends, however, tell area media outlets Rose suffered from diabetes and other health issues.

“Playboy” Buddy Rose worked with both the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and the American Wrestling Association. He made history when he wrestled in the first WrestleMania event in March of 1985. Rose wrestled as the masked “Executioner.” He lost to Tito Santana.

Rose’s final public match was in 2005 at a Wrestle Reunion event in Florida.

John Madden Retiring

In a statement released Thursday morning, Madden said it was simply time to move on.

“I’m 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I’m home and, more importantly, when I’m not,” he said.

“It’s been such a great ride…. The NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion–it still is. I appreciate all of the people who are and were such an important part of the most enjoyable, most fun anyone could have… that great life with the teams, the players, the coaches, the owners, the league… my broadcasting partners Pat [Summerall] and Al [Michaels]… the production people and the fans… is still great… it’s still fun and that’s what it makes it hard and that’s why it took me a few months to make a decision.

“I still love every part of it–the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people… but I know this is the right time.”

Madden Retiring: NBC’s Response

NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol responded to Madden’s decision, issuing the following statement:

“I spent all day in the Bay Area yesterday with John and tried every way I could to make sure he was sure about his decision. And in true John Madden fashion, he was sure. He said it best when he simply said ‘it’s time’… and I admire him for that.

“To put any speculation to rest, John has just decided to retire because it’s time–nothing more, nothing less. We will never see or hear another man like John Madden. We will sorely miss him because he was the most fun guy ever to just hang out with.”

Madden has won 16 Emmy Awards during his time as a broadcaster. He’s also a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He coached the Raiders from 1969 until 1979, when he stepped away from the field and behind the microphone.

According to In Touch Weekly, the couples’ major appearances, photo shoots, and “business deals” have led to their sizable 1.5 mill a year salary.

“We are trying to entertain in every aspect of our lives,” Heidi confirmed in the In Touch blog.

Perhaps In Touch should review how much of their income was generated by tabloids alone. . . including their own. Nothing can beat the Spencer-Heidi-US Weekly threesome, though. Is everything they do a “cover story”?!
