The PS Vita launches across North America on February 22 – for most people.

It seems the exception is a number of Canadian Amazon shoppers, who started getting their Vitas from February 8 after the retailer released the units early by mistake. While the number of prematurely released consoles isn’t known, many users in this Red Flag Deals forum thread have already posted shots of their shiny new Sony slabs, as the rest of the continent inwardly ragefaced with envy.

The users on the site got their shipping notices last week. Consequently, many received their new gadget two weeks or more before the official Vita launch.

While receiving games from online retailers a day or two early is not unusual, getting a brand new console a whole fortnight before launch suggests a hefty slip on Amazon’s part. Could these premature Vitas number in the hundreds? The thousands? The tens of thousands? Nobody knows, but I imagine Sony would like an answer to that.

Alas, the window of opportunity has now slammed shut: Amazon has noted its error and restored the correct February 22 ship date. Are any lucky Canadian Vita owners reading this? Let us know what you make of your gleaming new toy, you jammy swines!

The Last Guardian, the latest game from the studio that brought you Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, has been in development for a long time, and yet we still don’t have a release date.

To make matters worse, gamers got a scare last year when GameStop sent a notification to customers that The Last Guardian had been canceled. Fortunately this turned out to be a mistake, but it’s still easy to remain concerned about the game when Sonny hasn’t said or even shown anything on The Last Guardian in quite some time.

Well, you don’t have to worry about The Last Guardian being canceled anytime soon. 1Up recently caught up with Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, and the site asked for an update on The Last Guardian. Here’s what he had to say:

“The project has been making progress, but slow progress. So that’s tough, but we haven’t changed any focus. It’s still a really important project and a vision we want to see realized, and Fumito’s vision is really causing a very difficult challenge for the developers, so there’s some scrapping and rebuilding — iteration in the process. That’s why [it's taking so long].”

The Last Guardian was originally on track to release last year, but the game was pushed back for unspecified reasons. Sony has said that a 2012 release is likely, but even that is up in the air at this point. Hopefully Sony and Team Ico have more to show by E3 later this year.

In Japan, Sony introduced the “UMD Passport” program alongside the launch with the PlayStation Vita. The program allowed gamers to register their PSP games on PSN, and then download their games to their PS Vita for a fee.

It was assumed that Sony would be possibly do something similar in other regions, but Sony recently confirmed to Kotaku that there will not be a North American version of the UMD Passport program.

Shortly after Kotaku ran their story, Sony issued an official statement confirming the report, saying:

“SCEA will not be offering the UMD Passport program. U.S. consumers who already own digital versions of select PSP titles will be able to seamlessly transfer those games to their PS Vita system. What’s great for PS Vita owners is that they can enjoy PSP games with upscaled video quality that’s ideal for the system’s 5-inch OLED screen, along with controls that are optimized for its features such as the dual analog sticks. More than 250 PSP titles (including minis) will be available at the launch of PS Vita, and hundreds of additional titles will be available post-launch.”

We know that Sony won’t be introducing a UMD Passport program in North America, but the company didn’t say why the program would be a no-show. The program got some heat for being a little more pricey than some would like, but it was fairly convenient and still less expensive than buying a new copy of the game in most cases.

The PlayStation Vita launches in North America on February 22.

You may recall that, back in early January, Sony confirmed that the original Killzone would be making its way to the PlayStation Network in January–January 24, to be specific. And, as you may know, that didn’t happen.

Two weeks later, and the original Killzone–a port of the original PlayStation title, not a remake–still isn’t available on the PlayStation Network, and Sony has done nothing in the way of letting us know what’s going on.

Apparently, Sony hasn’t told the developers of the game what’s going on, either. The studio had this to say in a tweet from the official Killzone Twitter account: “With regards to KZ1 for PS3, not sure what happened but I’ve been informed that it’s been delayed indefinitely.”

News that Killzone was coming to the PlayStation 3 first arose from an ESRB listing back in January. Shortly after the news broke, Sony confirmed to Game Informer that the ESRB’s Killzone listing was legit, and that it would arrive on PlayStation Network in January.

Sony currently hasn’t said whether or not the “indefinite” delay has to due with a game-breaking glitch or something else, so your guess is as good as mine. We’ll let you know if and when Sony has something to say about it.

The Jak and Daxter Collection, a compilation of the first three Jak and Daxter games with remastered graphics, sound and stereoscopic 3D support, will be available at a retailer near you on February 7–and also on the PlayStation Network, Sony announced yesterday.

Instead of being bundled together in one big download, similar to the retail copy, each of the remastered Jak and Daxter games will instead be released individually on the PlayStation Network. Sony didn’t say how much they plan to charge for each remastered title, but it is known that the retail version runs about $39.99, if that helps.

In case you’ve never played a Jak and Daxter game before, here’s a rundown of each of the three remastered titles, Jak and Daxter, Jak II and Jak III, courtesy of Sony:

JAK AND DAXTER: While exploring some ancient ruins on a forbidden island off the coast, Jak’s best friend, Daxter, is knocked into a vat of Dark Eco–a terrifying and deadly substance that could corrupt the world forever — transforming him into a weasel-like rodent. The village sage, Samos Hagai, tells Jak that there’s only one person who holds the secrets to transforming Daxter back. Now the pair must set out on a quest in search of a wise old sage who has the power to restore Daxter to his former self.

JAK II: In this darker themed follow-up to Jak and Daxter, hero Jak tries to control the dark eco injected into his system and, with his sidekick Daxter, attempts to thwart the tyrannical powers ruining Haven City. Players earn the chance to wield four heavy-duty weapons, they can jack any vehicle in the massive open city, and they have a chance to use a jetboard to navigate special platform levels.

JAK III: Jak and his faithful companion Daxter are exiled to the unforgiving wasteland, where survival of the fittest is the law of the land. But deadly lands and dangerous creatures are only the beginning. Soon, the worst nightmare imaginable finds Jak’s world, threatening to annihilate all life with eternal darkness… This third chapter offers an exciting new open world that stretches from the farthest reaches of the wasteland to the strife-torn heart of the city.

Back at the Tokyo Game Show this past September, Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy X would be making its way to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita at some point. Some assumed that the re-release would be a remake, but that apparently isn’t the case.

Speaking at the Taipei Game Show recently, Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto took a few questions from those in attendance. Hashimoto was asked if the Final Fantasy X re-release was a remake or simply a remastering, and Hasimoto confirmed that it’s the latter.

“It’s being developed like a remaster, but the visuals will be much more improved compared to the original game,” Hashimoto said in an interview at the Taipei Game Show.

Unfortunately, there’s still no word on just when the Final Fantasy X re-release will be made available, nor have we had a proper look at it yet.

This news should be causing more than a few smiles in Redmond as the news that the Xbox 360 beat out Nintendo’s Wii and Sony’s Playstation 3 when it comes to worldwide sales for the first time ever.

It’s old news for for the Microsoft gaming console to beat out its competition nationally but it has never bested either one of them, let alone both, in the global gaming console marketplace.

The news of this champagne popping news came after Sony released its earning report yesterday which showed that the company had only sold 6.5 million units worldwide over the holiday quarter and when it combined with Nintendo’s sales of only 5.6 million for the Wii in the same quarter it showed both companies coming in behind Xbox 360′s sales of 8.2 million.

Now according to the team over at GeekWire this is the first time since 2006 that Xbox has lead worldwide holiday sales which is the same time that both the PS3 and Wii were just being launched.

Here’s the bigger news: The Xbox 360′s strong holiday quarter also put the Microsoft console ahead in worldwide sales globally for the full year of 2011, with 14.9 million units sold, compared with 14.1 million for the PS3 and 10.33 million for the Wii.

According to our data, compiled from historical earnings reports, it’s first time the Xbox 360 has topped the worldwide console market for a full year of head-to-head competition with the PS3 and Wii.

via GeekWire

Congrats to Microsoft and the Xbox team.

There was talk recently that Kazuo Hirai would be taking over Howard Stringer’s job as President and CEO of Sony, but the company was rather quick to shoot the news down shortly after it made the rounds. But as it turns out, the rumor was true.

Sony officially announced today that Kazuo Hirai, the now-former head of Sony’s gaming division, will take over as President and CEO of Sony effective April of this year.

Even if you ignore all of the speculation leading up to Sony’s confirmation early this morning, news that Hirai will be taking over as President and CEO shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Sony has been struggling to stay competitive over the past several years, and Hirai was the driving force behind one of Sony’s few successful divisions, so the choice seems obvious.

In a statement, Stringer explained that Sony began the process of finding a replacement back in 2009, when the company began to groom Hirai.

“Kaz is a globally focused executive for whom technology and the cloud are familiar territory, content is highly valued, and digital transformation is second nature,” Stringer said.

“I believe his tough-mindedness and leadership skills will be of great benefit to the company and its customers in the months and years ahead. I look forward to helping Kaz in every way I can so that succession leads inevitably to success. It was my honor to recommend him to the Board for the positions of President and CEO, because he is ready to lead, and the time to make this change is now.”

Over in Japan, PlayStation Vita owners get a discount whenever they purchase a title digitally through the PlayStation Network, and it was assumed–and hoped–that it would work the same way elsewhere, but Sony kept quiet on the matter.

Now that the PlayStation Vita launch is just around the corner in North America, Sony has finally confirmed that digital titles bought through the PlayStation Network will be discounted. At this point, it isn’t clear whether or not this applies to North America only.

“I can confirm that there will be a discount on the downloadable PS Vita titles from PSN,” A Sony rep confirmed to ShackNews. “Exact details have not yet been revealed, but be on the lookout for an announcement in the very near future.”

Word of the digital discount originally came yesterday by way of a NeoGAF user who managed to take a few pictures of a listing from a computer at Best Buy. The image shows several digital titles being discounted by about 10%, which falls in line with the discount Japanese Vita owners get.

We’ll let you know when Sony says more.

Sony, known for many electronics from televisions to computers to the Playstation, announced three new digital cameras in their Cyber-Shot line. Despite smartphone cameras getting more and more powerful, people still have the need and interest for a digital camera.

The Cyber-Shot line of point and shoot cameras have been known for their style and features. Consumers can expect great pictures, great video, great style, and all at a very attractive price that’s not going to break the budget.

Via PCMag:

“Sony has announced three new Cyber-shot point-and-shoot camera models, bringing the total number of new cameras in 2012 to six. The DSC-WX50, DSC-WX70, and DSC-TX200V, all of which will be available for purchase in March, all feature 5x zoom lenses and Exmor R CMOS sensors. They will be available in March, a month after the DSC-W610, DSC-W620, and DSC-W650 cameras that were announced at CES.”

What can people expect? Let’s start with the DSC-WX50.

2.7 inch screen

25-125mm f/2.6-6.3 Carl Zeiss zoom lens

16 megapixel image sensor

Ability to shoot 1080i60 video

Image stabilization

The DSC-WX70 is pretty much the same, except for the fact that it has a larger and supposedly sharper 3 inch screen. You can expect the WX50 for $199.99 while the WX70 with a larger screen will run you $229.99.

The DSC-TX200V is a totally different camera with a new, ultra slim design.

18 megapixel image sensor with 5x zoom

Ability to shoot 1080i60 video

GPS for tagging images

Image stabilization

3.3 inch OLED touch screen

Water and dust proof

People can expect to pay more which will run you $499.99. These cameras will be available in March.

What do you think about Sony’s Cyber-Shot line of digital cameras?

Insomniac has had a fairly good run developing the Resistance franchise, selling a respectable amount of copies for each title in the trilogy and attracting a solid fanbase. But that’s coming to an end–Insomniac says it’s done making Resistance games.

In a straight-to-the-point statement to VG247 at a recent summit held at Southern Methodist University, Insomniac CEO Ted Price firmly and plainly said that Insomniac “won’t be making any more Resistances”.

Following the news making the rounds, Insomniac released a video with Ted Price explaining Insomniac’s decision to move away from the Resistance franchise, and noting in the process that this isn’t the first time the developer has said that it intends to shift its focus elsewhere.

Don’t take this to mean that the Resistance franchise is done, however. Price explains that the series is now in the hands of Sony and developer Nihilistic, who is working on Resistance: Burning Skies for the PlayStation Vita.

“We believe that Resistance has reached its logical conclusion, in terms of the story we wanted to tell,” Price said. “However, that doesn’t mean the Resistance franchise isn’t continuing. It’s already in the capable hands of Nihilistic. And with Sony’s shepherding we know it will continue to live on and expand.”

You can check out Ted Price’s message to Resistance fans below.

Sony, maker of all things electronic, will be upgrading their smartphones and tablets currently on the market, to Android 4.0 also known as ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich). One of the issues with Android is fragmentation, essentially all different devices with all different builds of Android.

The team at Google has been really pushing to change that since the release of 4.0 and more manufacturers are upgrading their current devices. Those of us however with older smartphones, are left behind, but that’s what happens when a new smartphone comes out every other day just about.

And as well, this gets people to buy a new smartphone or tablet.

Via MSNBC:

“The upgrades to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich continue with the entire Sony Xperia line of smartphones, starting this spring, according to reports. Those say updates may be applied to applied to Sony’s Android tablets as well.”

“According to The Verge, sources say that Sony’s Tablet S and Tablet P “are already running ICS and are being tested behind the scenes, though Sony wouldn’t be drawn on giving any more specific a release window than the spring.” Sony also acknowledged the imminent upgrades on a UK-based Sony forum.”

Despite Sony Ericcson losing money last year, their new line of Xperia smartphones and new line of tablets, look to do well this year. Even the Pope used one of their tablets to light the biggest Christmas tree in the World. There’s a lot of competition in the space so we’ll see just how well they do among everyone else.

Does Sony have a chance of making a bigger dent in the smartphone and tablet market this year?

Earlier this month, Sony finally got around to revealing the pricing plan for the PlayStation Vita 3G, which is exclusively carried by AT&T. It was said that there would be two options: a $14.99 plan with a 250MB cap per month, and a $25 plan with 2GB per month.

Well, those plans have already changed, and the PlayStation Vita isn’t even out of the door yet. Joystiq spotted the PS Vita AT&T listing, and it has a slight change. The $14.99 plan for 250MB per month is still there, but they’ve replaced the $25 for 2GB plan with $30 for 3GB.

The change isn’t at all significant, and it actually comes off looking like a relatively good deal. Still, I have to wonder how many people are willing to invest an extra $50 for the 3G version, when they could just go for the standard WiFi model. That said, the PS Vita 3G plan with AT&T is a month-to-month affair, so you won’t have to worry about any contracts and what have you, so it has that going for it.

Do you plan on picking up the 3G PlayStation Vita model, or are you going with the WiFI version?

The World of smartphones is quite a competitive and tough market to do well in. One company in particularly that struggled during the fourth quarter of 2011 was Sony Ericsson, the ninth largest maker of cell phones.

Companies such as Apple and Samsung did very well and with the iPhone creeping up on Android in terms of OS market share, some would say fantastically well which they would be right.

Via Reuters:

“Sony Ericsson reported a fourth-quarter pretax loss of 247 million euros ($317 million), compared with a forecast for a 42 million profit in a Reuters poll in which estimates ranged from a 130 million loss to a 94 million profit.”

“For the full year, Sony Ericsson slipped to a 243 million euro loss, forcing Ericsson to take a 1.1 billion crowns ($160 million) hit to its operating income in the fourth quarter. The venture shipped 9 million units in the fourth quarter, down 20 percent on last year, with smartphone deliveries failing to compensate for falling feature phone sales.”

Even with sales usually jumping up in the fourth quarter, the company saw a decline of 16% compared to the same time the year prior.

“Volume and profitability at Sony Ericsson are both considerably worse than expected, illustrating not only the intense competitive environment, but the huge challenge facing Sony as it embraces the mobile business,” Geoff Blaber at CCS Insight said on Thursday.”

“Key to success going forward will be Sony’s ability to gain traction in the smartphone market, which Sony Ericsson estimated grew 60 percent to 463 million units in 2011.”

What brand of smartphone do you own and use?

With the torrent of game sales we saw back during the holiday season, I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that my backlog has grown to the point that, well, I’m terrified of it–and it’s about to get worse.

Last year, Sony kicked off a “11 for ’11″ sale, which offered 11 PSN titles at a discounted price in celebration of the new year–which was 2011, if you didn’t catch that. Following up on that sale, Sony today announced the 12 for ’12 sale, which brings 12 discounted games.

The sale applies to all PlayStation Network members but, as is often the case with Sony’s sales, PlayStation Plus subscribers get even greater discounts (5o% over 30%). There are some pretty great titles up for grabs on the cheap, including Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition, Eufloria, PixelJunk SideScroller and more.

The sale kicks off tomorrow, January 17, and lasts until January 23. For the full list of discounted titles and their new prices, see below.

Developer Just Add Water released Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD over on the PlayStation Network back in late December, as you may recall, and they’re already gearing up to release their second HD-ified title, Oddworld: Much’s Oddysee, “by the end of Q2″, the developer confirmed on Twitter.

The “remake” of sorts was announced alongside Hand of Odd for tablet devices back in April of last year, following an announcement from late 2010 of HD remakes of Oddworld: Abe’s Oddyssee HD and Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD.

Oddworld: Munch’s Oddyssee HD was originally said to be releasing on consoles, but it appears that Munch’s Oddyssee won’t be seeing a release on the Xbox 360, going by a separate tweet in response to a fan. It may not be seeing a release on Xbox 360, but you’ll be able to pick it up on PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and “other” platforms, the developer said.

Just Add Water hasn’t released much in the way of media for its upcoming remake just yet, but the developer did show off a render of Munch’s new model in Oddworld: Munch’s Oddyssee HD, which you can find below.

A lucky few have been playing the Starhawk closed beta for going on several months now, but now it looks like Sony and developer Lightbox are gearing up to launch a public beta starting next week.

“We’re now happy to announce that the Starhawk Public Beta begins this Tuesday, January 17th,” SCEA senior producer Harvard Bonin wrote on the PlayStation Blog. This is a crucial step for us as we’ll be testing all sorts of things, including game balance, server traffic, and general bugs.

“This is also a chance for more players to finally see what we’ve been working so hard on. As we’ve been getting so much support and encouragement from fans and press alike, we’re excited to spread the love and get more input to make the best game possible.

In order to get into the first phase of Starhawk’s public beta, which starts on January 17-18, you’ll need to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber. Alternatively, Uncharted 3 owners who activated their online pass can wait until January 31, at which point Sony will hand out invites by way of email.

If you don’t meet any of those criteria, Sony says there will be plenty of opportunities to get in through various means, including the final phase of testing which sees the Starhawk beta open to everyone with a PSN account.

For more details on how you can get in, see below.

January 17/18: All PlayStation Plus subscribers and all Private Beta participants (who haven’t erased their original Beta files).

January 31/February 1st: Uncharted 3 players will receive an email on how to access the beta. In order to get this email you’ll have had to redeemed your Online Network Pass found inside the boxed copy and made sure you’ve opted into receiving marketing emails.

February 7 (US): Visit GameStop and PlayStation on Facebook and see how you can get early voucher codes.

February 14: IGN.com (details to be revealed soon).

February 21/22: Everyone with a PlayStation Network account… in other words, everyone who wants in, gets in!

On this week’s edition of the PlayStation Blogcast, Sony revealed that Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are set to be released next Tuesday on PlayStation Network.

Both titles are already available at retail by way of the “Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection“, which goes for $40. Sony priced the digital releases of the two games at $20 a pop.

In related PlayStation Network news, Sony revealed that Crysis 2 will be made available for download on the PlayStation Network for $40, as well as Rainbow Six Vegas and Splinter Cell: Double Agent at $20 apiece.

If you haven’t experienced either Ico or Shadow of the Colossus already, shame on you! Both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are widely considered to be two of the best games of all time, if for nothing else but their stunning, heartstrings-tugging atmosphere and narrative, so you owe it to yourself as a gamer to at least give it a go, and a digital release sounds like a good option if you aren’t willing to throw down $40 for the retail bundle.

A rating for the original Killzone for PlayStation 3 recently popped up over on the ESRB website, strongly suggesting that we could see some sort of port in the near future.

Shortly afterwards, Sony confirmed to Game Informer that ESRB’s rating is legit, and the original Killzone is coming to PlayStation Network later this month. Before you get all excited and think this is a HD remake, it’s not–Sony confirmed that it was a straight port of the original PlayStation 2 release.

Sony told Game Informer that the Killzone port, part of its “Only on PSN” lineup of PlayStation 2 ports, will set you back $9.99 and will be made available to PlayStation 3 owners by way of the PlayStation Store starting January 24.

Here’s a brief description of the game from the developer for those of you unfamiliar with the original Killzone:

“Killzone is a squad-based, first-person shooter, set in the near future during a period of planetary colonization. Drawing inspiration from classical military conflicts of the 20th century. Killzone sets out to capture the intense reality of warfare between the ISA Command and a ruthless, militaristic separatist faction called the Helghast.”
