David Spade sells out dead buddy Chris Farley shilling DirecTV

I thought perhaps I was the only one who found this commercial to be in horrendous taste, but apparently Gawker did, too.

David Spade, whose buddy films and general camaraderie with SNL castmate Chris Farley arguably carried the show through the mid to late 90s, doesn’t seem to be doing much these days. But he still has time to trot out the memory of Farley in a really sad and creepy way in a DirecTV commercial. Spade does a bit interspliced with Farley’s “fat guy in a little coat” performance in Tommy Boy. I caught this spot during last night’s Yankees game and was really, really surprised that it was allowed to happen. It even seemed crass to hear Spade refer to Farley as “tons of fun,” insulting a dead man out of the context of the film from over a decade ago.

Granted, the Spade/Farley stuff from the 90s hasn’t aged well, but it cracked me up when the two dominated SNL and this commercial definitely sours future watchings of Tommy Boy for me. Sad. (And shameless.)

Well Cash for Clunkers really stimulated the economy. Unfortunately, it was the economy of Japan. And hey, homeboy isn’t Oprah.

Jenny Slate won’t be fired for SNL slipup

NBC executives won’t be firing Jenny Slate after her accidental opening-night f-word.

Unlike early SNL star Charles Rocket, who was famously fired after the same error during a “Who Shot J.R.?” Dallas skit, Slate will be able to keep her job. And as the slip occurred late in the show (around 12:40 EST), the FCC is unlikely to fine the production for indecency. RadarOnline posted about the reaction at NBC over the slip-up, and the rumors that Slate’s first show was also her last:

“No truth to firing conjecture,” NBC spokeswoman Sharon Pannozzo said. “She will not be fired.”

However, show executives were said to have had a “big meeting” after the incident and were generally not happy about it, and Slate did not attend the show’s opening night after party. The SNL rookie’s mis-step was the second time in two week New Yorkers were exposed to an accidental “f*ck.” Local anchor Ernie Anastos was caught out telling a co-anchor to “keep f*cking that chicken” live on a weeknight news broadcast. Anastos has since apologized.

On her first night replacing Michaela Watkins, SNL noob Jenny Slate “dropped the f-bomb” (also known as said the word “f*cking”) during a skit with Megan Fox and Kristen Wiig.

Jenny’s face was priceless.

SNL fires Michaela Watkins and Casey Wilson, adds two new “girls”

SNL has battled accusations of sexism and lack of respect for female cast members since the days of Rosanna Rosannadanna.

This weekend, news broke of the firings of two female cast members, Michaela Watkins and Casey Wilson. Watkins in particular was well-liked, known for celeb send-ups such as her Hoda Kotb to Kristen Wiig’s obnoxious Kathie Lee. The women are being replaced by two new “girls,” but Saturday Night Live head honcho Lorne Michaels did seem to do a bit of the cliche breakup thing when giving the women their marching orders. And no male members were cut, even though I’m struggling right now to think of any male stand-out cast members on the show right now.

Watkins spoke to EW.com, and her tone was respectful but clearly flummoxed by Michaels’ “it’s not you, it’s me” routine. Said Watkins, wistfully:

The only explanation I got from him — and he’s not known to say things just to make people feel better — was that he felt deep down that I should have my own show. And I agreed. SNL was a dream come true for me. It was a fantastic year. I don’t have any regrets.

Watkins seems to be hopeful about the future, describing her initial reaction and where she expects to go career-wise from here:

Shock. And sadness [because] it just felt premature. But on some level I feel like there are so many opportunities and things that I want to do in the future and now they’ll just happen sooner rather than later.

It’s too bad they’ve replaced Watkins, as she was one of the genuinely funny cast members on the show. Hopefully Lorne Michaels was right about one thing, and she’ll get her own show soon enough.

The SNL viral video Jizz In My Pants from December 2008 has finally had a female response: Puke In My Mouth.

According to the synopsis:

- this is a ladies’ response to “Jizz In My Pants” by Lonely Island. we (the pantless knights) got approached by a gal who had an idea for a fake engagement ring to ward off douchebags. we thought the whole thing was hilarious and told her we wanted to make a music video for it. a few months later, here it is and we hope you like it! also, peep our cameos FTW!!! big ups to the girls puking in their mouths!

The new, more rounded Kelly Clarkson was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live (SNL) this week.

Clarkson performed “My Life Would Suck Without You” and “I Do Not Hook Up” from her hit album, Everything I Ever Wanted.

One thing is for sure: having watched the videos, we know how the Kelly Clarkson pregnant rumors started.

Lonely Island is back with a followup to their SNL hit Jizz in my Pants.

I’m On A Boat is the latest release from The Lonely Island’s debut album Incredibad. The single includes Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone, and guest T-Pain.

Not surprisingly the song is about…being on a boat

Elisabeth Moss, Fred Armisen Engaged

Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss and Saturday Night Live’s Fred Armisen are engaged.

The relationship between the two only became know last week, when they were spotted together at a Mad Men party.

“It happened a few days ago,” Moss told usaweekend.com, “It’s private, so I don’t want to share the details of how it happened, but I will say it was perfect.”

No word yet on when the couple will be married. Moss made a recent appearance on SNL when her Mad Men co-star Jon Hamm hosted.

SNL David Paterson Skit criticized (video)

New York Governor David Paterson has criticized a skit on Saturday Night Live (SNL) that poked fun at his blindness and admitted drug use.

SNL cast member Fred Armisen did the skit during a weekend update segment in what many consider to be a accurate take on the Governor. However as we know: making fun of people with disabilities is a red rag to the complaints bull.

“I can take a joke,” said Paterson “But only 37% of disabled people are working, and I’m afraid that that kind of third-grade humor certainly adds to this atmosphere.”

A spokesman for the National Federation of the Blind also slammed skit, saying that “The biggest problem faced by blind people is not blindness itself, but the stereotypes held by the general public. “The idea that blind people are incapable of the simplest tasks and are perpetually disoriented and befuddled is absolutely wrong.”

Saturday Night Live takes on Blagojevich

Disgraced Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich made easy fodder for Saturday Night Live (SNL) this week, with a great skit where Blagojevich offers to appoint a candidate approved by the Legislature if the U.S. Senate gave him a lump sum and pays off his credit cards.

Keeping in true Blagojevich style, the first word out of the mouth of the Governor, played by Jason Sudeikis, was a swear word, with many following.

Rod Blagojevich’s wife Patti Blagojevich gets a run as well, with her character storming in with expletives to demand her husband get her a seat on NASA’s board. “You promised!” she whines.

SNL: Jizz In My Pants

Jizz in my Pants, a new song from Lonely Island about exactly what you think its about made its debut on Saturday Night Live (SNL) Saturday.

Lonely Island is Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, and the clip includes cameos from Molly Sims, Jamie-Lynne Sigler and Justin Timberlake. Samberg previously worked with Timberlake for “Dick in a Box.”

If songs like Jizz in My Pants tickle your fancy (no pun intended), it’s the first single from The Lonely Island’s debut album Incredibad due out February 2009.

Warning: some may find the language in the clip offensive.

A new website has been launched which looks at the media’s role in the election of Obama. Called howobamagotelected.com the site alleges that Obma got elected because the news media failed to do their job. Malpractice was the term they used, and it Malpractice by the Media; How Obama Got Elected is the name of the documentary that the people behind the site are putting out. I guess these guys are right wing Michael Moores.

The video is fascinating. Check it out.

The site also commissioned a telephone survey which verifies the results of the video interviews. Rightly or wrongly, the American people have made their judgement on Palin and the Republicans and its all pervasive. I guess they can blame Tine Fey and SNL.

Abby Elliott and Michaela Watkins join SNL

Abby Elliott and Michaela Watkins have been signed to join Saturday Night Live and will both debut November 15.

21 year old Abby Elliott is the daughter of former SNL cast member Chris Elliott, making her the first child of a former cast member to be hired in the shows history. Elliot’s thin resume includes a stint voicing the character “Hipster Girl” on King of the Hill, and brief appearances on Chrissy: Plain & Simple and You’ve Reached the Elliotts.

Michaela Watkins is best known for her role as Lucy in the 4th season of The New Adventures of Old Christine. Her other appearances include Eli Stone, Californication, Grey’s Anatomy, Without A Trace, Malcolm in the Middle, Charmed and Medium.

The pair will be taking over from Amy Poehler.

Obama is the anti-christ: Victoria Jackson

Actress and comedian Victoria Jackson, best known as a former member of Saturday Night Live doesn’t like Barack Obama so much, she’s publicly suggesting he’s the anti-christ.

I don’t want a political label, but Obama bears traits that resemble the anti- Christ and I’m scared to death that un- educated people will ignorantly vote him into office.

You see, what bothers me most, besides being a Communist, and a racist (Obama writes in his book, From Dreams of My Father, “I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and and animosity against my (white) mother’s race.”) (Obama’s “religion” of the last 20 years is Black Liberation Theology. What is that? “It is simply Marxism dressed up in Christian rhetoric. But unlike traditional Marxism, Black Liberation Theology emphasizes race rather than class. It’s leading theorist is James Cone who says Jesus was black, African-Americans are the chosen people, and whites are the devil. Cone says, “What we need is the destruction of whiteness, which is the source of human misery in the world.” The McAlvany Intelligence Advisor), is that he is a LIAR. He pretends to be a Christian and he incriminates himself everytime he speaks about Christianity. To lie about being a believer in Christ is very dangerous. Lightning could strike him at any minute! But seriously, he doesn’t have a clue what the Bible says and yet he pretends to be a church- going Christian to win votes. That is sooooo evil.

Hulu’s georetardation policies now officially beyond a joke

Hulu is to enter the live streaming space for the first time, offering the remaining two Presidential debates live as part of its new Hulu Election ‘08 portal.

The new portal features clips and full replays of major political stories (such as previous debates) and topical clips, such as last weekends Saturday Night Live send up of the Vice Presidential debate. It sounds like a good service, and I would have tested it before writing this post, but like everything else on Hulu it’s georetarded, so nothing on the page can be viewed outside of the United States.

Hulu has long blamed its content partners for its georetarding policies, and until now, as much as many of us outside of the United States hate it, the argument has had some level of validity. For example, I’m unable to stream shows directly off of most rights holders websites, so it’s a uniform decision that drives the rest of the world to Chinese hosted streams, YouTube or bittorrent.

But the election material is very, very different. There’s absolutely nothing I could find on the Hulu Election site I can’t already watch outside of the United States legally from content providers. Among the key providers of footage for Hulu are NBC/ MSNBC and Fox, and guess what: videos from both can be watched on demand outside of the United States (at least they played for me in Australia), and that’s direct on the site, and through embeds popular on other sites. And it’s not just the strictly political news content either: I can play the Saturday Night Live clip on an NBC embed as featured here on The Huffington Post.

So what exactly is Hulu’s excuse now? That it’s too hard perhaps to drop georetardation for some videos and not all of them perhaps? hardly seems a challenge when you consider that NBC can block full shows, but display clips. One can only presume that simply Hulu doesn’t care. If Hulu’s georetardation policies were a joke before, they are now officially beyond a joke. EPIC FAIL.
