When the Nokia Ace Smartphone with Windows Phone 7 capabilities rolls out at AT&T in March the wireless carrier will be giving the phone “top-tier” treatment.

Also known as “hero-level” treatment the device will receive direct AT&T advertising, better placement online and in retail stores and better training for employees who can then push the Nokia Ace onto their customers.

Nokia for a while now has been known as Microsoft’s main Windows Phone 7 manufacturing partner because of their willingness to ditch Symbian OS and make the change to the Microsoft led product.

To support the new phone an expected $100 million will be spent although it’s still unclear how much of that marketing will come from AT&T as opposed to Microsoft and Nokia.

That same source told BetaNews that a follow-up to the Nokia Ace could arrive before the end of 2012 if the first iteration is a success.

The push is not only important for Nokia but also for Microsoft, the company’s Windows Phone 7 operating system currently holds just a 1.5 percent share worldwide and less than 6 percent on Microsoft’s own home turf in the United States.

Windows Phone 7 and Nokia have not been helped along by HTC, LG, and Samsung who all prefer to develop and marketing the Google Android mobile OS.

Do you believe that the Nokia Ace can be the stepping stone Microsoft ultimately needs as they continue their push back into the mobile Smartphone market?

Levent Cetiner is a computer geek who proves that sometimes being a nerdy tech guy is for the best. Cetiner recent set up a motion-detecting camera in his apartment and had the photos taken from the camera transmitted to his Smartphone, when a burglary recently broke into his home the images were sent and the local police were called.

Levent then proceeded to leave his job and head home to catch the burglar in the act, after arriving at his apartment he banged on the door and yelled “You’re being recorded, and the police are on the way.”

The burglar attempted to escape by going down the fire escape outside of Cetiners apartment but he was quickly apprehended in the courtyard by police.

According to the New York Post the computer geek would have tried to apprehend the criminal himself but as he told the publication:

“I couldn’t get in because he locked the deadbolt from the inside.”

Apparently the police arrived just in the nick of time:

“He had packed up my own backpack with the stuff he was stealing!” Cetiner said. “He even took the [computer] chargers! Those are the two most important things I have. I play piano and have been recording on my laptop. If I lose it, I can’t get that stuff back.”

Perhaps the criminal should have stolen the wireless camera, then again the damage was already done and his personal image had already been sent for identification purposes to the apartment owners Smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is one of the first Google Android powered smartphones to cause lines to form outside of Verizon Wireless stores and that fact mixed with rumored supply issues have caused the phone to sell out immediately.

Lines at some Verizon stores wrapped around the block when the phone debuted on Thursday morning and some customers in the U.S. told Google blog Android and Me that store employees told them they were receiving less than ten handsets for launch day at select locations.

Hours after release Samsung pushed a software update for the device which greatly improved the UI and offered better Wi-FI and 3G/4G connectivity solutions.

In the meantime Verizon says they will continue to receive new stock daily although supply chain expectations have not been revealed by the company.

Verizon customers can pick up the device for $300 with a two-year contract while Amazon is selling the device for $150 with a two-year contract for users willing to accept a shipping delay of over a week.

Are you still waiting to get your hands on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus?

Google’s Android mobile operating system continues to dominate the Smartphone space with a 46.3% market share according to research firm comScore.

Following behind Google is Apple’s iOS platform with a 28.1 percent share in October, up from 27.4 percent in September, a climb likely the result of the company’s iPhone 4 release.

Slipping in market share again was Research in Motion who’s Blackberry devices fell from 18.9 percent in September to 17.2 percent in October.

In the meantime Windows Mobile/Phone 7 devices reached just a 5.4 percent market share in October, down from 5.6 percent in September and 5.8 percent in August.

It should be noted that much of Android’s success has come from the various manufacturers who rely on the mobile OS. For example Android can be found on Smartphones from HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola and various others. In some cases sales are also pushed up by extremely low cost Android devices including a ZTE Android device that is sold for just $20 in China.

In some cases subsidized Android phones can be purchased from U.S. Carriers at a cost under $100 with a 2-year mobile contract.

In the meantime Google may see a spike in handset market share before the end of 2011 as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus launches with the companies new Android 4.0 Ice Cream OS. Rumors are also circulating that the Motorola Droid 4 could possibly launched in time for the holiday shopping season.

Do you think Apple has the potential to catch up with Google Android or does their limited number of devices leave them at a distinct disadvantage.

This post brought to you by LG DoublePlay™. All opinions are 100% the writers.

The LG DoublePlay™ is a mid-range Google Android smartphone that attempts to redefine the hidden QWERTY keyboard market by adding a secondary display for multi-tasking.

The DoublePlay isn’t a device power users will gravitate towards and heavy text messaging users may be put off by the Smartphones awkward keyboard however for low to low-moderate use buyers the devices $99 price tag (typically with two year contract) and ability to process Google Android apps with ease should provide a decent experience in most conditions.

Design

The LG DoublePlay isn’t a small device at 4.8″ x 2.52″ x .63 inches, largely due to the fact that the device supports a hidden sliding qwerty keyboard which makes any device a bit on the thick side, however outside of that fact the design is fairly standard when compared to most Google Android supported Smartphones, for example below the devices frontside display which takes up most of the devices realty users will find capacitive touchscreen buttons which are located far away from the edges to reduce the chance of accidental pushing.

Above the display users will find the earpiece while a front facing camera is missing, a shocking omission given the popularity of the feature in 2011.

To the right of the device the phone features up/down buttons for volume control. The rocker is well designed and sticks out comfortably for pressing however i’m use to using devices with the rocker on the opposite side of the device which made for slightly awkward operation.

To the left a simple flush design with a USB connection is available. Nothing else to say about this side other than the fact that your USB slot is well protected.

Meanwhile the rear of the device features a speaker for speakerphone output along with a 5MP camera and an LED flash.

Finally at the top of the device the LG DoublePlay features a 3.5mm headphone jack and a power/standby button, both of which are flush with the device, ensuring no design distractions for the decently slick device.

Oddly enough the plastic material that surrounds the display reminds me of the HTC Touch, a device that is more than three years old which shows the dating of the DoublePlay in terms of sticking with an old and uninspired outer appearance.

Display

The LG DoublePlay features a 3.5″ HVGA (320×480 pixels) which is surprising given the number of low and mid-range devices that currently feature WVGA resolutions. While the screen is big enough to support the Google Android OS without viewing issues the display experience is muddled at best. For example when using the device in outdoor lighting it becomes nearly impossible to view the display which isn’t helped along by a weak low brightness output. One feature that did strike me as impressive was the devices use of deep color production which provided nice icons and program use when indoor lighting was utilized or when the device was used in the dark (great for a night out at the local bar).

Sliding open the device users are greeted with a secondary 2″ touchscreen display. This display offerings eight icons that are meant to make certain uses easier on the device, the icons include:

Text messages, music player, group texting, picture gallery, email, calendar, browser, and the social+ app.

While having a text messaging icon next to the devices full size QWERTY keyboard is a nice feature I didn’t really find that the shortcuts added to the overall experience. I also would have appreciated the ability to customized the DoublePlay secondary icons, a feature that is sadly not included.

Keyboards

Typically I wouldn’t devote an entire section of my review to a devices Keyboard however the DoublePlay’s entire existence surrounds it’s double displays which contain it’s sliding QWERTY keyboard.

Because the phone uses a secondary display which is centered inside the keypad users are required to use their thumbs to more easily type text messages. Half of the keyboard is located on the left side of the display and the other half are found to the right. When first using the LG DoublePlay the keypad setup was a bit distracting, especially with a bright display interfering with typing however 5-6 hours of use proved in my opinion that the keyboard is functional enough for most light typing users while “professional” text messaging users will catch on quickly to the overall design but will likely find it lacking.

Aside from a function key which provides a .COM output the keyboard is a fairly standard option, you won’t find dedicated Facebook buttons or other functions but it serves it’s overall purpose.

In darkened environments I did appreciate the very bright blue backdrop lighting found on the keyboard which made text entry extremely easy.

One qualm I had, because of the placement of the volume rocker it can be awkward to change volume levels when the keyboard is open since the rocker then sits behind the main display, it’s not a deal breaker and moving the button to the left side would have interfered with holding the device but it is slightly awkward.

If you simply can’t stand to use the physical keyboard at certain times the devices virtual keyboard is actually a better option in my opinion, not only is it more responsive then the physical QWERTY keyboard but it works well with certain Anroid applications that tend to offer smoother operation with a virtual keyboard. I actually found myself using the physical keyboard in outdoor lighting but then switching to the virtual keyboard for indoor and darker lighting environments where the display offered a more “rich” experience.

I personally find it amusing that the Google Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread OS and it’s virtual keyboard option is what made text messaging and email sending easier on the LG DoublePlay and not the company’s touted sliding QWERTY with multi-tasking secondary screen output.

Camera

A 5MP camera on a mid-range device is fairly standard and that’s what users get for their money a standard 5MP camera that offers colors on the “cool” side that can be easily drowned out in less than stellar lighting conditions. Indoor photos were bland under artificial lighting while the LED flash offered some assistance in low lighting shots but was drowned out by often grainy images that softened the final output of images.

In outdoor lighting some decent pictures were witnessed but hardly what I would call optimal options even on a lower-end 5MP camera.

One near saving grace for the LG DoublePlay is the camera’s ability to take decent 720P video recordings. Again lighting plays a big part in how well the image appears however the recordings for quick use are acceptable. The camcorder feature offers auto-focus and captures 30 frames per second with neutral color production. If the 720P recording camera has one major flaw it’s the scratchy audio that is recorded on the device, not surprising given the issues with call quality I outlined earlier.

Overall the LG DoublePlay’s camera won’t send you running to your local wireless store to pick one up but it’s still capable of capturing quick photos and videos that you don’t plan to file away in your special moments folder.

Connectivity

1GHz process technology has been around for the last 12+ months so needless to say I was a bit concerned that the device only featured a 1GHz option however I was pleasantly surprised by the smooth responsiveness offered by the DoublePlay. Even when several applications were being run at one time the device never really appeared to strain against heavy use. Would I have liked to see a faster processor? Of Course, but for a mid-range device the Smartphone controls it’s processing power well.

The DoublePlay’s GSM technology unfortunately didn’t offer crisp phone calls on the Smartphone users end. I regularly experienced muffled sounds and background noise, however callers on the other end of the line said my voice sounded fine. I would venture to guess that 60-70% of my calls featured unwanted noise that was slightly distracting but far from the worse I’ve experienced.

The Smartphone also features 3G speeds which are on par with most 3G devices, for example pages loaded decently with very few slow load times and connecting to downloads was swift and reasonable. While 4G connectivity would have been appreciated this is a mid-range device and for the price and specs offered it did the job.

If you simply need faster speeds the devices Wi-Fi is decent, providing faster pageload times than 3G while staying connected on both private and public WiFi networks. I didn’t have a chance to test hotspot functionality on the device however I will assume that the connectivity features in those areas will match the devices standard WiFi connectivity standard.

Also featured is Bluetooth connectivity which offers A2DP connectivity with excellent results. Google Android has always been great at managing music (this device is no exception) and streaming that music to an A2DP supported headset was simple. Then again you can also use the 3.5mm headphone jack to listen to your music choices. I did find some sharpness is tones when the headset was turned up full blast and while the equalizer function helped fix some of the devices noise issues it didn’t solve all “noisy” results at high volume levels.

When turning to the devices battery a full days use is possible if secondary screen interaction is avoided however you won’t want to miss that charge or you’ll be without a powered phone the following day. Considering that my iPhone 4 needs a charge every night I would say the LG DoublePlay is on par with other Smartphones in terms of battery charging needs considering that it offers two displays that must be powered.

First Look Video

Because the phone is such a unique concept here’s a video that show off the LG DoublePlay design:

Conclusion

While I wouldn’t recommend the LG DoublePlay to a heavy user of Smartphone or tablet technology the device does have some nice features that are worth closer examination for potential low-end to mid-range users.

If you want a simple device for occasional messaging, updating Facebook and perhaps using a few Google Android apps the LG DoublePlay should meet your needs and if needed your budget. If you’re new to the Smartphone market the QWERTY keyboard will likely be fine for you since you don’t “know any better” when it comes to text messaging comfort.

Perhaps if the LG DoublePlay had focused on a more sleek design it would look like a more modern device, as it stands it’s clunky, lacks a proper user interface on it’s secondary screen (give us customization options!) and provides mediocre call quality in more than half of all placed phone calls.

Perhaps $99 isn’t a bad price to pay for a Smartphone however $100 more can buy you an iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy or any other competent option that provides a more realistic picture of Smartphones available at the end of 2011.

Not only can you now diagnose cancer using your smartphone but now you can perform a brain scan on the go thanks to a company by the name of Milab.

This portable brain scanner consists of a low-cost 14-channel EEG headset with a wireless connection to a smartphone (they are using a Nokia N900) with the smartphone providing a touch-based interface with real-time brain state recording with a little bit of 3D reconstruction thrown in for good measure.

There’s no word on price at this point but I’m sure you won’t care when the time comes for the peace of mind you’ll have. In the meantime here’s a quick video showing it at work.

In news that will not surprise anyone who has been following the HP meltdown over WebOS this weekend, the company has announced that the HP Pre 3 smartphone will not be sold in the United States. The company has however revealed that the Pre 3 will be available in the U.K. and France for a considerably low unlocked price of just $75.

To put that pricing into perspective, the HP Pre 3 currently sells for $505 in France and $490 in the U.K., while locations throughout Germany have already announced that they are sold out.

Expected to be the flagship smartphone for the HP line of webOS devices the company announced this week that they were discontinuing the HP TouchPad tablet and likely abandoning the webOS platform all together.

The Palm Pre 3 featured the largest keypad of any devices to date along with a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor and a 3.6-inch display that offers 480 x 800 pixels of resolution, 2.5x better than the original Pre. The device also comes equipped with a 5-megapixel camera includes image stabilization, autofocus, and LED flash, while a video calling camera is also featured on the forward-facing part of the device.

While the Smartphone is not officially available in the U.S. grey market devices will at least partially work on the AT&T and T-Mobile networks with 2.5G Edge use, however the devices feature the 900, 1900 and 2100Mhz bands which eliminates 3G coverage in the U.S.

Are you willing to pick up an HP Pre 3 with the understanding that support will not be offered and warranties will be left by the wayside in North America?

The announcement means the company will stop producing their HP TouchPad tablets which managed to only move 25,000 units at Best Buy stores, a far cry from the millions of iPad, iPad 2 and various Google Android devices that have been sold to date. The company also says their computers by this time next year could be stamped with another company’s name.

The move, one of the most dramatic in the company’s 72-year history appears to be motivated by a similar move undertaken by IBM after their consumer business began to erode due to heavy competition from Dell, Apple and other desktop and laptop manufacturers. IBM now focuses on their highly successful software and computing services.

HP also took some time on Thursday to announced that they have purchased business software maker Autonomy Corp. for approximately $10 billion, making that deal one of the company’s biggest acquisitions of all time.

Following news of their reorganization the company announced a rise in third-quarter income but also cut their outlook for the rest of the year.

The announcement of WebOS’s demise comes just 16 months after HP spent $1.2 billion to buy Palm, the creators of the WebOS mobile operating system.

I for one will be happy to see the HP line of laptops and desktops come to an end, my wife has had nothing but issues with her HP and Compaq models since purchasing them from HP and their customer support is horrendous, it’s no wonder their consumer oriented business has all but shriveled up and died.

As smartphones proliferate throughout our society gadgets that utilize them are becoming the next big thing. While some of them, like the one that can take your blood pressure or diagnose what type of melanoma might be infesting your skin, the majority are pretty much stupid and useless.

Now on the surface this gadget and app for your smartphone from Cobra might seem to be on the silly side but that feeling will only last until the next time you lose your keys.

The Cobra Tag uses Bluetooth, GPS and an app to form a little smartphone-and-key support network.

The Cobra Tag system will keep you from losing your phone and keys (or anything you could attach the GPS-enabled fob to) in a few different ways. You can set up an alert, for instance, whereby the phone or fob will make some noise if either one ever strays too far — Cobra defines “too far” as 30 feet. That’s useful if, say, you keys fell out of your pocket while you’re walking along. Failing that, you can also check in with the fob’s GPS coordinates to hone in on where it is, and continue to trigger the noise until you find ‘em.

It’s a two-way street, too, as the fob will also let you find your phone, if that’s what you’re missing, and will even give it a ring so you don’t have to ask a friend to.

via DVICE

This little gadget will set you back about $60, and though that might seem a little on the expensive side consider what a locksmith will cost you.

Nokia managed to hold onto their “worldwide leader” status for the Smartphone market during Q2 2011 sales, however the company did watch their worldwide reach fall from 41% to 22% of the market.

According to Gartner the company moved 23.9 million smartphones in Q2 2010, mostly from sales of Symbian based devices.

Gartner also revealed that many of those sales likely came from bargain basement prices that Nokia offered to clear out remaining inventories.

Gartner analyst Roberta Cozza said of the company’s actions:

“I think Nokia’s channel situation is pretty lean and in the third quarter we will not see the same effect from destocking as we saw in the second quarter,” while adding, “It’s clear that Nokia’s smartphone business will remain under challenge.”

Nokia sold 97.9 million mobile devices when non-Smartphone devices were included in the company’s count, while 2010 witnessed 111.47 million units moved during the same period.

As the company watches their sales drop, the overall market has been very healthy with 428.7 million mobile devices sold in the second quarter of this year, that’s an increase of 16.5% year-over-year based on quarterly periods, while Smartphone sales increased by 74% globally.

In comparison Apple constituted 18.2% market share, while Google Android based devices now make up 43.4% worldwide, up from 17.2% the year prior.

Nokia has big plans for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform which has had some moderate success which Microsoft hopes will grow when Windows 8 is released with further Smartphone integration capabilities for WP7 powered devices.

In the meantime, partnering with Google Android might not be a bad move for Nokia, I’ve personally always liked the design models they’ve offered and top notch cameras, but Symbian offers a UI from another generation and it simply can’t compete with iOS, Android or even WebOS for that matter.

The iPhone 4 with a two year contract can be grabbed from AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless for $199.99, however for users looking for a much higher end option Gress has $30,000 and $7,000 models that are encrusted with diamonds, crystals and pearls.

For buyers looking for a much “cheaper” alternative the company also has a Swarovski crystal option that still runs $7,000 by replacing the diamond encrusted backing.

Only 150 devices are being produced and when they run out no more will be produced so go sell your car now so you can afford at least the cheaper two of the designer builds.

The FCC on Monday became the temporary home of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 when manufacturer Research In Motion (RIM) submitted their newest Smartphone offering for approval consideration. The company has asked the FCC to test their devices short-range wireless capabilities including Bluetooth, NFC and Wi-Fi. In terms of additional connectivity the 9900 also offers GSM connectivity with HSPA+ capabilities.

The phone is RIM’s attempt at making their devices relevant again and bring with it a 1.2GHz processor and 2.8-inch display that outputs at 640×480 pixels of resolution that’s wrapped into a touchscreen which is said to be more responsive thanks to a BlackBerry 7 upgrade that fixes interface issues found on past RIM devices. Users will even discover OpenGL 3D gaming and faster internet browsing.

Along with the FCC filing it has been revealed that RIM is hoping to ship the Bold 9900 by August or September. Either release date would be in-line with RIM’s oddly short request that the FCC agree to a 45-day confidentiality on common details.

With GSM and HSPA+ set for the Smartphones initial release AT&T Wireless would appear to be the best American candidate for the device.

In the meantime here’s an FCC diagram for the device:

A rumor from a trusted source surfaced on Sunday that claims the iPhone 4 will arrive in unlocked form on Wednesday in both 16GB and 32GB capacities and in both white and black colors.

According to the rumor the phone model numbers MC603, MC604, MC605, and MC606 which all align with GSM versions of the phone are expected to arrive and have recently shown up on FCC filings.

The practice of selling unlocked iPhones isn’t new to Apple with various countries offering the phone to customers in unlocked form, however the company’s partnership with Apple had prevented that practice in the United States since the first generation of the phone was released.

While AT&T’s exclusivity ended in 2011 with Apple the lack of 3G support for T-Mobile’s network has shied some users away from the international open versions of the device, however an unlocked version of the phone would make travelers happy and could even show AT&T’s willingness to make their devices more accessible to a wider user base as they attempt to acquire T-Mobile.

A new study reveals that 35% of smartphone owners are so on the pipe that before they even become vertical for the day, they’re smartphoning.

Not surprisingly, 18% of those surveyed are using their phones for social networking apps, by far and away the most popular being Facebook. (Does a MySpace app even exist?) Actual bed isn’t the only time users are firing up apps- 34% use them late at night, and 20% are using them up until they close their eyes for the day, kind of like a glowing, square teddy bear. Aw.

34% use smartphones while commuting, a figure that seems like it should be higher, and 26% are unmannerly enough to whip their iPhones or BlackBerrys out while they’re eating dinner. The study repeats recent data that smartphones and tablets like the iPad have changed the way users access the internet as a whole:

“Prior to the introduction of smartphones, consumers tended to use the internet in “chunks” – they would tend to confine their internet activities to when they had an opportunity to sit in front of a computer. Smartphones allow people to go online the very instant they get the impulse. Internet access is thus becoming more spontaneous and unplanned.”

Which of these activities do you engage in? Are you glued to your phone for a large portion of the day?

The Samsung SGH-T759, better known as the Samsung Exhibit 4G was spotted this week by TmoNews as it passed through the doors of the FCC.

Based on rumored photos the T759 features a front-facing camera and a rear-facing camera with an LED Flash. The 4G device also features a microSD card slot and comes equipped with Google Android 2.3.3 with TouchWiz capabilities.

As the name would suggest it also features HSPA+ connectivity.

The screen size is expected to be around 3.7-inces and feature a Super AMOLED display that’s powered by an impressive 1.4GHz processor that may or may not include ARM11 capabilities.

No possible release date or pricing have been revealed at this time.

A screen grab on Google Adwords today has revealed that HTC plans to release the HTC Sensation on June 8. As you’ll notice, the screenshot sends users to the HTC.com url, leading us to believe that it was accidentally announced by HTC.

If that isn’t enough proof for you, TmoNews also points out that a photo of the device from HTC also shows the June 8 date on the phones display, more than likely a mock up that was meant to be used when announcing the phones U.S. release date.

Considering that HTC had said the 4G enabled phone would show up in the U.S. “beginning this summer” there’s a good chance the leak is correct.

Here’s the phone screenshot showing the June 8 date:

Get ready T-Mobile customers, it looks like your 4G device is only a two months away.
