After purchasing Skype for $8.5 billion in 2011 Microsoft hasn’t been quick to offer a Windows Phone version of their popular messaging and phone calling program. Now VP Rick Osterlod revealed that CES that a Skype for Windows Phone device is “coming out soon.”

The announcement was made during an interview at CES after Microsoft has long showed the program running on Windows Phone 7 devices but has not released a version of the messaging program for their own mobile OS.

Here’s the taped interview with Rick Osterlod:

In the meantime Microsoft is not expected to provide any “special treatment” to Skype mobile.

With higher resolution “front-facing” cameras arriving in bulk it’s likely that Microsoft will work as quickly as possible to roll out a worthwhile Windows Phone 7 app for Skype.

Holiday travelers with access to a Skype Wi-Fi account will be able to take advantage of the service for free starting on Wednesday, December 21st through December 27th.

Under the program Skype is offering one hour of completely free access to travelers passing through 50 different U.S. airports.

To activate the free service users of Skype for Windows, Skype for Mac and the Skype Wi-Fi iOS app simply log-in at any one of Skype’s accepted locations which can be found on Skype’s website (pictured above).

This isn’t the first time a tech company has offered free Wi-Fi, Google offered unlimited access to Wi-Fi networks (airports and in-flight) over several holiday periods , however unlike Google’s generosity Skype has a specific motive, introducing potential customers to their new Wi-Fi hotspot service.

Do you plan to take advantage of Skype Wi-Fi when traveling through any of their U.S. supported free Wi-Fi airports over the holiday season?

Using the Skype messaging and calling system can inadvertently allow users to share their physical location from people they may want to hide that information from.

Researchers at New York University’s Polytechnic Institute tracked the activities of 20 volunteers and 10,000 other users over a two week period and through their testing they were able to tell where each user had placed their calls and examine their peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing activity.

In a news release Keith Ross, professor of computer science at NYU-Poly noted:

“A hacker anywhere in the world could easily track the whereabouts and file-sharing habits of a Skype user – from private citizens to celebrities and politicians – and use the information for purposes of stalking, blackmail or fraud.”

Researchers also found that logging out of Skype wasn’t enough to stop information from being revealed since that info was made available for up to 72 hours.

The hack also allows users who are not on a persons contact list to track their location and data pulls and that information could be gathered even when a user blocks calls from non-contact members.

With more than 600 million people currently using the Skype service it’s likely Microsoft will quickly attempt to remedy the issue, especially after spending $8.5 billion to buy the service just seven months ago.

Skype currently controls 20% of all overseas calls.

Skype has admitted that such IP information can be obtained and they say that any service that connects through an IP address offers the same risks and a Skype rep told the FinancialPost:

“Through research and development, we will continue to make advances in this area and improvements to our software.”

Will you stop using Skype until a fix for the current hack is discovered?

A new security flaw has been uncovered in Skype, one that could provide hackers with easy access to a Skype user’s IP address.

The chink in the chat program’s armor was uncovered by researchers from Europe and the United States, who found a way to see which files Skype users are downloading on BitTorrent. Once a Skype user has been tied to a particular download, it’s a quick and easy step to accessing publicly available data from the BitTorrent DHT network.

On said network, many users share full contact details, including their full name, city and country. In their paper, titled “I Know Where You are and What You are Sharing,” researchers stated this could lead to blackmail, stalking, scamming, or fraud.

The flaw can reportedly be exploited without the user’s knowledge, and can be executed on a massive scale. The reserch team demonstrated this by scheduling hourly calls to tens of thousands of Skype users.

But perhaps the most worrying factor of this story is Skype’s apparent indifference. Not only has no fix materialized, but researcher Stevens Le Blond told TorrentFreak:

“We contacted Skype almost one year ago but the attack is still effective.”

Keith Ross of the Polytechnic Institute of New York University added:

“We believe this could be used by various people to stalk, blackmail, or defraud Internet users in general and P2P filesharing users in particular. A hacker anywhere in the world could easily track the whereabouts and file-sharing habits of a Skype user – from private citizens to celebrities and politicians – and use the information for purposes of stalking, blackmail or fraud.”

Incidentally, you’ve got to love Fox’s angle on this, which dresses the flaw up as a terrorist catastrophe waiting to happen. Because you must never stop being afraid.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype is finally official. The announcement comes just a week after the European Commission gave their approval of the the $8.5 billion acquisition.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said:

“Skype is a phenomenal product and brand that is loved by hundreds of millions of people around the world. We look forward to working with the Skype team to create new ways for people to stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues–anytime, anywhere.”

CBS reports that the Microsoft / Skype deal was announced in May. The two companies received approval from the US in June, but it wasn’t until last week that the companies cleared their final hurdle when the EC ruled that there were no competition concerns regarding the deal.

Skype Cheif Tony Bates, who will now become the President of Microsoft’s Skype division, said in a blog post:

“I am delighted to announce the deal with Microsoft has formally closed, and Skype is now a division of Microsoft. This represents a huge leap forward in Skype’s mission to be the communications choice for a billion people every day.”

PC Magazine reports that Skype will still be available on non-Microsoft platforms like Android and Apple iOS. Microsoft will eventually role out specific Microsoft products with Skype integration.

Here’s a look at what Microsoft just acquired.

Bates added:

“Joining forces with Microsoft is the best way to accelerate this mission and capitalize on our position at the intersection of social, mobile and video communications. Simply put, we want to transform communications.”

Do you think the Skype / Microsoft deal will transform communication? Will the acquisition help Skype reach 1 billion users?

Since launching Skype in the Classroom as a beta program this past December the company has signed up more than 16,000 teachers and now they have announced plans to shoot for 1 million educators.

Speaking at the Social Good Summit Skype CEO Tony Bates revealed:

“Skype has been going on for many, many years, and teachers have been finding each other and they’ve been finding ways to use the power of Skype in the educational process for a long time.”

Bates then went on to add:

“We really felt that it was time to take this to the next level…moving from grassroots Skype in the classroom to an initiative driven by Skype.”

The platform currently allows teachers to create profiles that describe the classes they teach, while providing their teaching interests at which point that directory is then searchable by teachers from all over the world.

Mashable points out the the most useful features is the “project” tab that:

“Helps teachers find partner classrooms for projects and ideas. One teacher, for instance, used the platform to coordinate a “weather around the world” unit. A middle school in Massachusetts regularly chats with an Afghan youth peace volunteer group. Another was able to host a virtual visit from Barbara Bush.”

More than 900 projects have already been posted through the Skype education website.

Do you believe that allowing Skype to connect classrooms around the world provides for a more robust teaching environment for students who have learned to engage with technology since birth? Share your thoughts in our comments section.

Skype has announced the acquisition of group messaging service GroupMe for somewhere in the vicinity of $50 million to $100 million. According to people close to the deal the GroupMe application will continue to operate independently but will likely play a major role in future updates to the Skype messaging system.

While initial reports put the buy at $50 million, BetaBeat‘s Ben Popper says several sources have placed the deal between $75 million and $85 million.

On their official GroupMe blog the company noted that the acquisition is “not just a big win for GroupMe and our amazing investors, but also for New York City.”

Popper noted:

“As part of the deal, GroupMe will remain in New York, team intact, working on our standalone application. The major difference will be that we will now have access to Skype’s 175 million monthly connected users.” and “Skype arguably picked the best of breed to help it conquer the mobile market.”

Microsoft acquired Skype earlier this year which technically means Microsoft has purchased GroupMe.

Skype has most recently faced increasing competition from the like of Google+ and their video messaging service which allows up to 10 people to communication at the same time and from Facebook who recently launched a video chat competitor of their own.

How would you like to see GroupMe become integrated into Skype systems.

Skype design VP Rick Osterloh has confirmed that the development of a Skype app for iPad is in the works. He also confirmed that nearly every single feature found on the desktop version will be offered including full video chat support, voice and text.

The big missing feature? File sharing, which is due to Apple not offering an exposed file system on their current iPad devices.

At this time the app has been testing for “a few months” and is expected to launch on June 28 although that date was not confirmed, currently the iPad app is in “private beta testing.”

Interestingly enough Skype says they have not received any obstacles from Apple, despite the fact that their own technology puts them in direct competition with Apple’s own “FaceTime” offering.

According to Electronista, Osterloh would also not answer questions as to whether Skype will eventually be baked into future iOS versions.

In May 2011 Microsoft announced that they would pay $8.5 billion in cash to acquire internet phone and chat provider Skype and less than one month later the FTC has approved that acquisition.

While concerns began to arise that Microsoft would begin to restrict Skype services on other platforms, providing the company with an unfair advantage in the VoIP market, FTC officials said that there did not appear to be any anti-trust issues with the deal and would therefore allow it to proceed. Microsoft has said repeatedly that Skype would continue to run as it’s own division.

The acquisition of Skype is important as Microsoft needs to compete successfully with Google and Apple video calling options so they can control brand recognition within the international market that Skype currently controls.[via]

Comcast customers will soon have the option to make HD video calls directly from their TV via Skype capabilities.

At this time Skype and Comcast are mum on the details of the partnership including release dates and pricing.

The service could be a boom for Skype with Comcast already offering digital phone services to more than 8.5 million customers, while Skype’s own service gaining popularity everyday and an increasing number of TV’s arriving to market with built-in cameras.

According to the announcement the service will require a monthly fee, an adapter box and a camera mount for TV’s without built-in cameras. Just like the current Skype setup no additional fees will be assessed for national calling.

According to the Seattle Times the service will start with 720P and then eventually move up to 1080P HDTV quality video chatting. The service will also require a 1.5 megabits per second download connection, which not surprisingly Comcast offers to their customer base.

It’s happened again, but this time it looks a lot more serious. Not only is the service unreachable for millions of Users, the app seems to be crashing, and not as it first seemed for just windows users, its happening on OSX and Unix Servers.

Skype have been quick to report an apparent fix which is posted below, but they’ve also been quick to report that they are still investigating the reason for the crash.

The Skype website is up and down currently.

This comes just a couple of weeks after Microsoft bought Skype for an inflated $8.5bn and many are already speculating that this outage is connected to the takeover.

June 7th Update: As of 90 minutes ago, Skype has gone down again. As was confirmed last week, the problem the last time was a bug in the Microsoft Windows Client. However, the fix posted below has not fixed anything this time round and skype is still down after re-running the tasks.. This means that it is more than likely a network issue. Personally I think its amazing how such events like these effect so many millions of people who rely on such a service on a day to day basis (including myself) Let’s hope its not a repeat of the extended downtime of December 2010!

Quick Fix Instructions via Skype.

Windows Vista and Windows 7

(1) Close Skype.
a. Right-click the Skype icon in the system tray (at the bottom right of the screen)
b. Choose Quit.
b. Type %appdata%\skype and click OK.
c. Delete the shared.xml file.
(4) Restart Skype. The shared.xml file will be recreated.

Windows XP

Leading up to the big announcement today about Microsoft buying Skype for $8.5 Billion Steve Ballmer sent out the obligatory email to all of the company’s employees. The email first showed up on Mary Jo Foley’s blog and then over at the Seattle Times’ Pri0 blog.

Here is the email in full

“Today we announced an agreement to acquire Skype, the leading Internet communications company. You can see the full details here. Pending regulatory review, Tony Bates, CEO of Skype, will report to me as President of our newly formed Skype Division.

“This is a big step forward today for Microsoft and Skype, and one that has substantial benefits for our joint consumer and business customers. On its own, Skype is a powerful consumer brand with more than 170 million connected users, synonymous in many places around the world with voice and video communications. We will help them grow even stronger.

“By bringing together the best of Microsoft with the best of Skype, we will drive a new era in communications. We see a huge desire to do more with video, to make it easier for people to connect from multiple devices, to move from chat to phone to video and back in a way that is easy, natural, and human. We see with Kinect the power of using the biggest screen in the house – the living room TV screen – as the place where people connect with friends and families. We see with Windows Phone 7 the way communication moves from personal to professional in a blink of the eye. And we know that people want more connection and richer communication, across many devices and around the world.

“Together, Microsoft and Skype will deliver that kind of communication and connection. In the future, Skype will support Microsoft devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices, and we will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, Xbox Live, Messenger and other communities. I want to call out the success we have had with the introduction of Lync specifically and the value of connecting that to a consumer community of Skype. And we’ll continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.

“Today’s announcement underscores who we are as a company. We are ambitious and forward looking. We have big goals and aspirations. And when we look into the world and see opportunities to do more with technology, we’ll drive toward them and keep pushing. Sometimes we’ll build ourselves, as we’ve done most recently with Bing and Kinect.

“Sometimes we’ll partner or form an alliance to seize the moment, as we’ve done with Yahoo! and Nokia. And other times we’ll make an acquisition, as we’ve announced today – one that plays to both company’s strengths and opens new opportunities not available otherwise.

“Exciting times!
“Steve”

Not all employees were excited about the announcement as evidenced by the post by Mini-Microsoftwho would love nothing better to hear every Microsoft’s board members reasoning as to why this is a good idea. Mini-Microsoft basically equate the purchase and just another way to obliterate shareholder dollars.

Also, because, you know, the aQuantive acquisition didn’t destroy enough shareholder money.

We’re bringing Skype to the Windows Phone. Just like how it’s on the iPhone and Android and appears it will continue to be.

Okay, so we’re bringing Skype to the Xbox. Because, you know, we don’t already have video chat on the Xbox. Oh, wait… crap. Why do we need this? Other than the brand and the user base, and that’s not worth 8.5 billion dollars.

Having a read through the comments on Mini-Microsoft’s posts show that naysayers of the deal abound but as Paul O’Flaherty and I discuss the acquisition on today’s Daily Brief there are a lot of nuances to this purchase that will come to light as we move forward.

I don’t think this is as bad as Mini-Microsoft makes it out to be but there is no denying that we will definitely be talking about this deal for some time to come.

After some speculation that Microsoft and Facebook were both vying to purchase VoiP property Skype, the former has plunked down $8.56 billion in cash to purchase the service.

Skype is Microsoft’s priciest acquisition to date, beating out the 2007 purchase of ad firm aQuantive in 2007, a deal that rang in at $6 billion. Microsoft already operates Windows Live Messenger with a significant userbase, and while Skype’s 124 million active users per month is far smaller than Windows Live Messenger’s 330 million, 8 million Skype users pay for their service.

After critiquing how Skype’s software is structured, Wired points out some interesting math about the paying customers:

Even the access to paying customers is hard to justify. The terms of the deal mean that for each Skype customer, Microsoft is paying about $1,000. And on average, those customers are worth a profit of about $30, presuming most of Skype’s income comes from subscriptions and call charges. That’s a huge disparity.

In a joint statement with Microsoft, Skype CEO Tony Bates said:

“Microsoft and Skype share the vision of bringing software innovation and products to our customers… Together, we will be able to accelerate Skype’s plans to extend our global community and introduce new ways for everyone to communicate and collaborate.”

Using words like “uncontrolled use” and “security threat” the Russian security service is proposing that the country ban the use of web services like Skype, Hotmail and Gmail.

Due to the use of foreign made encryption technology the Federal Security Service (FSB) is expressing an increased concern over these global web services.

“Uncontrolled usage of these services may lead to massive threat to Russia’s security,” he said at a meeting of the government’s communication and technology committee.

Control of Internet traffic through these services is done from servers outside Russia, and so they are often used by extremist organizations, Andreyechkin was reported as saying before the meeting continued without the press.

Deputy communications minister Ilya Massukh later said that recommendations on regulating the mass usage of encryption technology would be given to the government by October 1.

The FSB would like to ban these services in Russia because “security authorities cannot access them,” Massukh was reported as saying.

Russian agencies quoted a Kremlin source later Friday as saying that Andreyechkin’s statements were “his own opinion and don’t reflect the government’s policy regarding development of the Internet.”

“Andreyechkin overstepped his authority and made hasty remarks about these popular services,” the source said, RIA Novosti reported.

“State policy in the sphere of Internet technology is not set by security services.”

Police everywhere are always on the look out for new technology to help them as they combat everything from burglary to murders.

For police in Palm Bay however when it comes to battling drunk drivers they are resorting to a technology that has been around for years: Skype.

“When it comes to impairment, time is of the essence,” Cpl. Morgan said in a statement.

“The goal is get the most accurate capture of evidence closest to the time of the incident and our experience using Skype helps us do that.”

Palm Bay Police Cpl. Darin Morgan worked with Judge David Silverman and prosecutors to develop the system.

Officers use email to forward documents to the judge and then hold a conference call by Skype to obtain warrants for blood draws on suspects. The process can be used for other types of crimes, officials said.

“It’s like a virtual office and courtroom,” Morgan added. “If an officer can stay within his patrol zone instead of having to drive to the courthouse or the judge’s house to obtain the warrant, it saves time and increases the officers ability to protect the public.”

I am a big user of Skype especially over on WinExtra for our daily video news show and while I have tried the beta of Skype 5.0 I ended up having to roll back to the previous version 4 so I was kind of glad to see this announcement show up on the Skype blog, even though the news isn’t all roses.

With the release of version 5 Skype has moved the new group video chat, and live support, to a subscription model. From their announce on the Skype blog:

Group video calling has shed its ‘beta’ label and officially joined our product line-up with the introduction of the new version of Skype for Windows.

It’s available as part of the new Premium package which offers group video calling together with access to live chat customer support.

You can buy a day pass for $4.99/€3.49/£2.99* or a monthly subscription for just $8.99/€5.99/£4.99† per month.

If you sign up for group video calling in the first month, you’ll receive a 33% discount on 3 and 12 month subscriptions. In addition, you’ll get a 25% discount off an HD webcam.

The new version of Skype for Windows also includes a number of improvements to video stability and quality, and we recommend that you download it now.

Here’s hoping that whatever problem with the software that cause the service to go down for an extended period of time has been fixed.

Angry Skype users unable to connect to the service for much of the day managed to crash Twitter earlier in their fervor to either research or complain about the outage.

Skype itself has also been using the microblogging service to keep users abreast of the situation and disseminate updates about the progress of service restoration. In an explanation contained in a link tweeted by the official Skype Twitter account, the company said the outage wasn’t “typical or expected,” and described how it occurred:

Skype isn’t a network like a conventional phone or IM network – instead, it relies on millions of individual connections between computers and phones to keep things up and running. Some of these computers are what we call ‘supernodes’ – they act a bit like phone directories for Skype. If you want to talk to someone, and your Skype app can’t find them immediately (for example, because they’re connecting from a different location or from a different device) your computer or phone will first try to find a supernode to figure out how to reach them.

Have your business or pre-holiday communications been upset by the temporary loss of Skype? You can keep tabs on the service via their now fairly frequent Twitter updates on the situation.

Well, it was super romantic and sweet while it lasted.

A gay couple who circumvented a Texas gay marriage ban by marrying in the state via a Washington DC officiant and the web-based video calling service Skype has had their marriage annulled by a court in the District. While gay marriage is legal in DC, the couple, Mark and Dante Walkup, received a letter from the officiant informing them that theirs was not because they were not physically present in Washington DC at the time of the wedding.

The letter, posted in full on a Dallas news blog, informs the couple they will have to re-marry in DC if they wish to- well, be married. But the Walkups say they asked about that very stipulation when they filed for their marriage license in May, and were told that only the officiant of the ceremony need be in DC to perform the rites.

“In good faith, we planned our wedding accordingly because we thought we were talking to the experts,” Mark says. He said he was additionally miffed by the lack of any notice from the court that their license was under review in the first place. Neither the couple nor the officiant were contacted by officials seeking information about the circumstances or geographical whereabouts of their marriage.

Both Mark and an expert on “e-marriage” law told the blog that the most likely scenario involved court action based on a complaint, which is said to be unusual:

“It was based on homophobia or politics or both,” Reed-Walkup says. It’s unknown at this point who initially took issue with the Walkups’ marriage and complained to the court. A law professor who specializes in “e-marriage” tells Unfair Park that “there’s simply no reason for the court to do something like this.”

“[Courts] don’t flyspeck other people’s marriages,” says Professor Mae Kuykendall at the Michigan State University College of Law.

Furthermore, Kuykendall says, the fact that a non-party to the marriage apparently acted to have it annulled is even stranger. (And sadder- who sits in their house thinking, “those two dudes are happily married now and this cannot stand!”)

Usually, this is the kind of thing seen in divorce proceedings, or perhaps when heirs want to try and retroactively prove a marriage was invalid, Kuykendall says. But for an uninvolved third party to rule against a marriage in this way? Kuykendall says “it may not be the best reasoned bureaucratic action that’s ever taken place.”

The couple say they’re likely to travel to DC to get married, and are looking into their legal options regarding the action.

Gay marriage isn’t legal in Texas, but that didn’t get in the way of a Texan couple’s totally gay wedding.

Mark Reed and Dante Walkup executed a pretty neat workaround using Skype. While gay marriage is legal in some jurisdictions, this poses a logistical issue for some couples who wish to have a proper wedding to their specifications. I know my family doesn’t travel, and maybe Reed and Walkup had the same problem. Maybe they just wanted to get married where they live. So they went to Washington DC, handled the necessary paperwork, and arranged the hell out of their wedding. Using Skype.

Reed commented on why the couple chose to do it that way:

“It was very important that all of our family came,” Reed said. “It was the first time they actually met, even though we’ve been together 10 years. If we had to go to D.C., there’s no way we could have had the people there who we wanted to be there.”

Of course, since the wedding was conducted over Skype, the reception probably sucked.
