It feels some days that the only reason we use the Web any more is to do nothing but share mundane crap with people who probably couldn’t care less. Oh I am sure there are some gems passed around but one has to wonder just where are we sharing all this crap, and with whom.

Well this is an answer that the folks at Plasick Media and Voltier Media look to answer with an infographic that has gotten shared around the web today, which in itself is more than a little funny if you think about it.

What is interesting is so much the numbers when it comes to the amount of sharing being done but rather how little so called popular social network services are being used. For example 47% of accounts on Twitter are not active or that on 50% of Facebook users log in on a daily basis.

Anyway here’s the infographic for you to peruse.

Smartphone app discovery is a difficult, and often time consuming, past time that everyone with a smartphone engages in. What with the constant influx of new apps that arrive daily mixed in with the older apps as well as the .. well .. garbage apps it can be hard to find just that perfect app you were looking for.

Well for iPhone users there is some salvation out there in the form of Zwapp.

Recently launched Zwapp aims to make it easier for you to find the apps you want by interacting with your friends that you create an app community by selecting them from your Facebook and Twitter friend lists. From that live feed you get to see what your friends are downloading and installing on their iPhones (Android coming soon) and have discussions around those apps as well.

Additionally Zwapp detects the apps you already have installed and adds them to your Zwapp profile which you can then share with the wider web.

As Alexander van Elsas describes Zwapp:

“We wanted to make the app discovery process more engaging. Instead oflooking through long lists of popular apps in the store, you can now discover apps with yourfriends. Even better, when you look up an app, you can see what friends are using it and whatthey think about it, instead of reading comments or reviews from people you do not know”.

Now just a bit of a disclaimer. I have known the CEO of Zwapp, Alexander van Elsas, for a number of years and consider him a good friend but writing this post was a little difficult since I am not an iPhone user so I can’t give a full accounting of what I think is a great idea. However it has been whispered that along with an upcoming Android release of Zwapp there is a possibility of one being released for Windows Phone 7. When that happens I will definitely be revisiting this interest concept of sharing and find good smartphone apps.

That said if you are an iPhone user and what to check Zwapp out you can find it on iTunes.

If you managed to pull yourself from what ever rock you like to hide away in to get away from the endless hype that happens in the tech blogosphere you might have heard of some new mobile photo-sharing sharing service called Color that managed to snag itself $41 million in first round funding.

I’m not even going to go into the whole insanity of any just popped up from stealth startup getting $41 million because that is just mind boggling when you consider Google didn’t even get half that much in its funding. What gets me though is the fact that anyone thinks that Colors is worth any amount of the hype it is getting, admittedly both gushing and not so gushing.

For those of you not familiar with what Color is the simple story it that it is a photo sharing app between you and those people around you in any given place that have Color installed on their smartphone. You don’t have to know any of the people either as the software will detect another smartphone and share any photos you have taken at that location with those unknown people and will share their’s with you.

As Frederic Lardinois at NewsGrange points out this “elastic social network” that lives for the time you and other Color users are in close proximity and shares all photos within that temporary location based social network

Here is what Colors does: Unlike apps like Instagram, picplz or Path, every picture you take is public and there is no option to make it private. More importantly, the app groups together both the photos that were taken at the same location and the people that took them. To do this, the service uses some admittedly smart algorithms that look at where your phone was pointing, the ambient noise around you and other factors to determine that these pictures were indeed taken in the same place. The service then organizes you into an “elastic” social network with all the people around you who took picture at the same place. It basically creates the social network for you as you use the app (and dissolves your “friendships” automatically if you don’t take pictures close to each other for a while).

My reaction when I read all that is being written about Color is – why?

Why would I want someone else’s; a person I don’t know from Adam, images of the same place mixed in with the I have taken pictures?

Why would I want to share my pictures, my memories, my special moments, shared with people I don’t know and will never ever see again?

Why is there some stupid assumption that this picture taking of special moments even needs to be socialized beyond the charing that we are doing on our blogs, on Facebook, or on Twitter. At least there we are making a conscious choice of whether our pictures we have taken are available for public consumption.

Color proposes to take that away because as Frederic points out every picture you take is public and instantly sharable to other people around you who have the app installed.

I realize that that the line between private and public is constantly being moved, with a real effort to remove it altogether, but idea is just plain stupid. It’s not revolutionary as some would have us believe. It is just another attempt to inundate the web with totally pointless images, except to those who took them.

Thankfully Color has one very large Achilles heel – in order for this idea to work it will require mass, and I mean mass, adoption and I honestly believe, regardless of the over sharing world we live in, that the critical mass Color’s will need to justify its stupid $41 million round of funding will never be reached.

Generally when blogs talk condescendingly about the newspapers moving online we like to point out how they never link out to blogs that they mention or one’s that they quote. To a point I can understand the reasoning behind why they go this route, I don’t agree but I understand, however when it comes to other kinds of linking the policy is just stupid.

The reason I mention this is because I saw a mention of some music tagging software on Friendfeed and the link provided was to a Wall Street Journal Technology online post. The post by Geoffrey Fowler talked about two specific software packages that you could use with your MP3 files to help clean them up. The two programs were TuneUp Media and MusicBrainz Picard neither of which I had heard of before so I was interested in taking a look.

Except there was a problem with trying to do that – no links. The only link in the whole post was for Apple because iTunes was mentioned in relation to TuneUp Media and it only lead to a WSJ page for stock information for Apple. When it came to the two software packages though nada.Zip. Zero links.

The thing that gets me is that neither of of the products mentioned had anything to do with what WSJ could construe to be a competitor. They would have been links to products that maybe their readers would have appreciated being able to check out. This would have been an added value (although blogs would have linked out naturally) for the WSJ readers.

There was no ‘threat’ to WSJ losing readers. In fact they would have been helping their readers. It is this kind of attitude regarding linking that is only going to make people look for alternatives to these old media online efforts. It might seem like a simple thing to get bitchy about but sometimes consumers really appreciate those little things – especially when they don’t cost anything to give.
