Sex induced amnesia

Not to make light of this obviously distressing malady but it’s got to really suck big time to suddenly lose your memory after making love. I am sure there are some who might suggest that this is a natural occurrence after a round of mediocre under the sheets nookie but the fact is that this is a real medical problem for some people.

In post on CNN Madison Park relates the tale of Alice and Scott who found that after a morning love-making session Alice had lost a part of her memory.

As they lay in bed, Scott (the couple asked that their last name not be used) flicked on the television, which was showing the Olympics. This perplexed Alice. “Is there an Olympics?” she asked. This was during the Michael Phelps mania, when the swimmer seemed to be everywhere.

“Are you sure there is an Olympics?” Alice asked again.

Scott recalled, “I saw that something was wrong, so I asked her, ‘OK what day is it?’ ”

Alice appeared even more perplexed.

“Who’s our president?” he quizzed.

“Bill Clinton,” she answered. This was 2008.

It turns out that Alice was suffering from what is called transient global amnesia (TGA) and while it doesn’t affect the memories of the person’s identity it does affect the patient’s ability to retain recent memories.

TGA can be triggered after the person afflicted has engaged in some sort of strenuous activity – which having sex would qualify, vigorous exercise, sudden immersion into hot or icy water, or even a bump on the head.

In the case of Alice it took the doctors several hours of examining and testing her before arriving at the diagnosis of TGA. It turns out as well that TGAs can be precipitated by migraines and headaches. As well TGA are listed as one possible side effect of taking Levitra, a pill for helping with erectile dysfunction.

Alice did recover from her bout of amnesia but she still can’t remember what happened that morning only that the night before she had gone to be with a headache. Other than that life has returned to normal for Alice and Scott with the exception that no more sex for Scott if his wife feels a headache coming on.

NYT subtly frowns on Deadspin’s ESPN horndog dossier shenanigans

A new media campaign retaliating against ESPN for scandal related subterfuge got some old media attention today.

Deadspin, a Gawker media blog, gets oodles of sports and sportscaster news related tips and rumors in their inbox. Back at the beginning of September, Deadspin’s editor AJ Daulerio contacted ESPN for confirmation of the rumors swirling around Steve Philips regarding the unhinged intern (Brooke Hundley) that Philips totally turned out to be tapping. ESPN spokespeople were less than forthcoming about the brewing scandal, and Daulerio got scooped and got mad- so he decided to devote a day to posting all the tips he’d gotten regarding sexual impropriety at ESPN.

Daulerio tagged the entries “ESPN horndog dossier,” and posted rumors about Erik Kuselias, Stephania Bell, Jed Drake, Katie Lacey and David Berson. There was even a “glossary“ posted that gave a bit of background info on some alleged less savory seduction practices common at ESPN. The intended effect was swift and painful for ESPN- the names named by Deadspin showed up in the top results of Google searches frequently late last week and even prompted ESPN President George Bodenheimer to issue a memo asking staff to quit blabbing about the constant in-house boning to media.

The New York Times kind of chided the Deadspin for their “ESPN horndog dossier” today, and ESPN only commented in a statement, saying:

“Deadspin’s self-admitted rumormongering is despicable behavior by any standard and shows callous disregard for its impact on people’s lives. It is not worthy of response and those responsible should be called to account.”

Although the Times piece seems to imply that the posts were all rumor and supposition posted purely out of spite, quotes at the end not only lend credence to Daulerio’s sources, but also the reasoning behind the decision to go after ESPN in the first place:

But in the interview (with the New York Times), (Daulerio) said he adhered to the same standard of proof as any traditional news organization, repeating only those things told to him by multiple sources with close knowledge of the subject.

He and Nick Denton, owner of Gawker Media, said the larger issue was sources being dishonest with journalists. “When an unnamed source misleads, as far as we’re concerned, they lose the right to remain in the shadows,” Mr. Denton said in an e-mail exchange.

Daulerio also contends that none of the tips posted were kept under wraps very well anyway:

“Do I bend the rules a little bit? Of course I do. We’re still a blog at the end of the day, a Gawker Media blog. The larger truth out of this, outside of my temper tantrum over getting scooped out of a story, is that this is the worst-kept secret in sports media.”

Just say no to lady garden mints

Vagina mints- why has no one thought of this before?

Because it’s a horrifying, off-putting and misogynist idea, that’s why. The new “novelty” feminine mints (feminine being a euphemism for the part of the female anatomy that dare not speak its name, see video below) called Linger and priced at $7.99 a tin are a whole bowl of wrong for so many reasons- here are the first four.

Reason #1: The backstory. A nameless woman, who I assume is supposed to be the entrepreneur behind the concept of vaginal mints, tells the soft-core story of the first man who slipped her some cootch candy:

On a first time trip into the heart of India, I fell instantly for a soft spoken, aristocratic man. He was tall, built, and well dressed. His voice was deep and husky, his eyes dark and intense, his skin the color of caramel…

(Fade to black…)

I was caught off guard when he kissed me deeply tasting of sweet mint… delicious! He looked into my eyes then and said softly, “Now, let me Linger!” That was the beginning of a long-lasting love affair. When I returned to the States, I brought the tingly sweet tasting sex mint with me. It’s been shared with friends and (believe it or not) family. It’s been shown to and discussed with our physicians. Now, this Internal Feminine Flavoring has been recreated to be shared so your lover can Linger with you!

Sadly for womankind, the skipped over bit does not include the woman asking incredulously “did you just put a mint… in my vagina?!?” before beating the man unconscious with her shoe, caramel colored aristocrat or not. But wrong keeps coming.

Reason #2: The website, in general. Bad web design, “brought to you by GoDaddy!,” is off-putting enough when they’re not shilling “internal feminine flavoring.” I wouldn’t trust the entities behind this site to sell me… well, anything more innocuous than crotch mints. In addition to looking like it was strung together in Front Page circa early-2000, there are bonus points for charity-appropriateness fail:

Reason #3: Sweeteners + vagina= infection. If you’re worried about getting visitors down south, as it were, a yeast infection doesn’t add to your hospitality down there.

Reason #4: As MotherJones points out, they’re just regular trade show mints, repackaged and repriced for your filthy, unminty hoo-ha. Although the subtext of the site is clear (Linger is designed for slow release-extending the time your partner will want to spend tasting the new you- translation: your vagina is gross!) I would counsel any woman who considers minting her delicate bits to please a man to consider the alternative. Chances are, if you’re that hygiene conscious, you’re already not-disgusting enough to mate with. Remember, like a liberal coating of Axe Body Spray, a mint can only cover, not clean what’s there. And if your partner complains about foreplay anyway, you can always lock them out without their pants and get a vibrator. More expensive, sure, but worth it for the lack of minty vagina stinging.

Tell the World where You Had Sex – IJustMadeLove.com

The new website lets you tell the World when, where and in which position you just had sexual intercourse. The Polish company SharQ sp. z o.o. based IJustMadeLove.com on Google Maps. You start out overlooking the world. In some countries the rabbits, which indicates where someone just had sex, are bigger in some countries than other. If you hover your mouse above a rabbit, a counter shows how many just “reported in” within the last hour, day, week or month.

This very useful site also lets you zoom in on a specific rabbit or spot, so you can see which kind of carnal relation he or she just enjoyed. The five graphical representations of positions should cover the basics and all you have to do is tick the right box or boxes. You can also add a comment and tell us if it was indoor or outdoor.

Some users might find the 20 minutes update prevention a bit annoying, but the site is over capacitated, so I guess thats fair enough.

The pill: It picked your boyfriend

New data was released this morning regarding secondary effects of 40 years of widespread usage of the birth control pill.

A study published in Trends in Ecology and Evolution this morning has shed some light of the effects of hormonal contraception and mate selection. While it appears that women suppressing ovulation may be choosing mates with a slightly different evolutionary profile, it also seems that suppression of ovulation affects how attractive women may be to potential mates.

Dan Savage has an interesting perspective on the findings:

It goes like this: the type of man a woman finds attractive varies pretty widely according to her menstrual cycle. Women who are ovulating prefer men who are more masculine and “more… genetically unrelated,” like the guy on the right, above; women who aren’t ovulating prefer guys who are more feminine and genetically more similar, like the guy on the right. Since the pill suppresses ovulation, and since many women are on the pill when they’re dating and sleeping around—or “selecting a mate,” as the docs put it—women may be marrying men they find attractive on the pill but not so much once they’ve gone off the pill.

The study goes on to predict that “commencement or cessation of the pill influences the quality and stability of pre-existing long-term relationships.” But it also asserts that the benefits of the pill are a huge factor, and that women who use the pill as contraception have had no problems attracting or retaining partners.

Assassin’s Creed II to contain ‘a bit of sex’

The portrayal of sex in videogames has a short, extremely checkered lifespan.

Uncomfortably, it started with the rape of a Native American woman in Custer’s Revenge, and a bunch of other rubbish/unbelievably tacky ‘erotic’ Atari 2600 games.

Since then, few games have attempted sex scenes, and those that do have fallen flat. The last game I played with sex in it? Fahrenheit, and those scenes were more awkward than my own sexual encounters. Believe me, that’s quite an achievement.

Sex as depicted in games is crap, then. But Ubisoft wants to change that. Assassin’s Creed II director Benoit Lambert has confirmed that his medieval stabby sequel will contain some business time.

“[Hero] Ezio is a womaniser. There’s a bit of sex. I can’t say more.”

You tease, Benoit! The game hits shelves November 20th. Will Ubisoft become the first company to create videogame sex that isn’t utterly cringeworthy to watch? (Spoiler: no.)

Normally the inventiveness of human beings is pretty cool but sometimes one has to wonder just what drugs people are on when they come up with stuff like this. It’s not as if the idea of the snuggie was bad enough or that people actually think that having snuggie parties is some new cool trend to be a part of of but somehow Snuggie Sutra is just a little overboard.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a prude. I love sex but the idea of draping two people in something called a snuggie and then getting all sweaty just doesn’t seem to be all that appealing. However if this is how you roll then Snuggie Sutra, The Kama Sutra of Snuggies, could be just the site for you.

While copious amounts of the hippity dippty seem like a given if you want to make a baby, it seems that daily ejaculation for “at least a week” prior to conception is ideal to boost fertility.

Up until recently, it was believed that resisting the urge to ejaculate was possibly a good method of getting a semen retention headache increasing the amount of laundry you have to sneak into the hamper when your girlfriend isn’t looking improving sperm quality. But a bunch of Australian medical experts have found evidence that you’re not getting enough BJs. In their own words:

He studied 118 men with above-average sperm DNA damage and found the quality of their sperm increased significantly after they were told to ejaculate daily for seven days.

On average, their DNA fragmentation index — a measure of sperm damage — fell to 26 percent from 34 percent, Greening told the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Amsterdam on Tuesday.

Frequent sex does decrease semen volume but for most men this is not a problem.

Researchers believe that frequent sex or fapping reduces the amount of time sperm are exposed to damaging elements in testicular ducts. Yay for daily health routines!

Burger King beats Quizno’s in grossest ad insinuation involving a sandwich

Well, perhaps it’s a tie.

First we had an anthromorphic oven begging a Quizno’s employee named Scott to “put it in me.” Now Burger King has joined the sandwiches equal sex brigade with a series of ads featuring the most obvious BJ metaphor I’ve ever seen in fast food. Forgetting the fact that Quizno’s sandwiches taste like toasted vomit, this is just gross.

iPhone’s saucy new app turns your cell into a vibrator

Oh, the iPhone… what can’t it do?

Via Gizmodo comes today’s hot new app, MyVibe. The free app purports to give your phone a sexy second function- as a vibrator. The arguably x-rated app is the only one of its kind to be approved by Apple, and is offered by online sex shop My Pleasure. iCame?

Purely for research purposes, I downloaded the MyVibe app to check out the specs. It doesn’t boast any magical powers to make your phone buzz harder, though. (Not that I tried. For fifteen minutes.) There’s a little Apple-style on off button that starts things up. And in the upper right hand corner, there are up and down arrows to direct the buzzing.

The numbers appear to dictate the timing of vibrations, with 100 being slower, more spaced buzzes versus the faster, more intense buzzing closer to one. Thirty-three seemed to have a pretty good rhythm if you’re into that sort of thing.

There’s no clear way to have anyone control the vibrations remotely, which might be a fun use for the app- although I suppose it would require just waiting around with your phone on your hoo-ha. And the vibrations are decidedly weak- if you’re looking for a real vibrator, this isn’t going to get you very far.

But as a free app, it’s not too bad. You might want to check it out if you’re easily stimulated or afraid of getting caught out with your Hitachi Magic Wand by airport security. I hear that can be very embarrassing.

Note to Lawyers: Don’t Accept Sex As Payment

Legal fees can be expensive — but allowing clients to pay with sex, it turns out, is a no-no for lawyers.

A Florida lawyer named James Harvey Tipler has been disbarred by the state for providing legal services in exchange for, well, other “services.” Tipler evidently let an 18-year-old woman “work off her legal fees” by working it, so to speak, according to recently published reports.

How much is sex worth in the law world, you might be wondering? The woman’s bill, for an assault-related case, was said to be $2,300. Tipler, local media outlets report, credited off $200 each time she had sex with him — and $400 each time she arranged for another woman to have sex with him. That’s rather insulting to her, isn’t it?

Tipler pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution. It didn’t stop there, though: An investigating board apparently found he also charged excessive (non-sexual) fees, altered evidence, arranged false testimonies, and actually stole money from clients.

If only he’d somehow known those things were frowned upon…

‘Spray-On Viagra’ Being Tested For Minute-Men Worldwide

A new kind of drug dubbed the “spray-on Viagra” is currently being tested to help guys who have a problem with — shall we say — timing.

PSD502: The Spray-On Viagra

The so-called “spray-on Viagra,” actually named PSD502, is being developed by doctors in the U.K. Men apply it five minutes before sex, Mail Online reports, and can see enhanced “sexual performance and sexual satisfaction.” Doctors say men’s total time increased from an average of 0.6 minutes (yikes) to a whopping 3.8 minutes after using the spray.

No major side effects were observed with the use of the PSD502 “spray-on Viagra.” It’s not yet clear when it could hit the market.

The PSD502 “spray-on Viagra” study is published, quite fittingly, in the April issue of a journal called BJ-U International.

When sex in a car wash might not be a good idea

I’m sure there are more than a few folks out there who probably wouldn’t see anything wrong with having a little fun while washing the car but in this case a solo act wasn’t such a good idea. Such was the case last October when a concerned citizen phoned the Saginaw, Michigan, about some suspicious activity they were seeing at the local car wash.

When the police went to investigate they discovered Jason Leroy Savage in a compromising position with one of the car wash’s vacuum hoses. Leroy soon discovered that his little excursion into the car wash wild side was going to net him a charge of indecent exposure.

The case came to a climax with Mr. Savage pleading no contest to the charges and getting sent to the local prison for 90 days – sans soap on a rope.

Okay this might only be one college – Wellesley College – but hey statistics are statistics so let’s roll with them. Here’s some highlights that you might find on the interesting side should you be planning a stint at a college sometime soon

1. 0% of students with ’studio arts’ major are virgins

2. Virginity rates for Spanish major (43%) is much lower than virginity rates for English and French majors (50%)

3. There is evidence that geeks get laid the least in college. Check out the rates for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.

As if kids need any further encouragement for an active sex life

There’s been many a slang term that has been used to describe the typical sex lives of teenagers. Whether they involved terms like bunnies or minks there has never been any doubt that kids will get it on when and where ever they can. However some idiot Shadow Minister by the name of Tim Loughton in England seems to think that they need even further encouragement to increase their sexual activity.

He said: "We are all well aware of the excellent work voluntary groups do to promote social cohesion and to engage young people in their communities, and of the excellent qualities volunteering brings. It promotes self-esteem and a survey showed 17 per cent of 18- to 24-year-olds said volunteering had improved their sex lives."

Of course Mr Loughton the MP for East Worthing and Shoreham tried to downplay his phraseology as being one just to get the attention of a rather rowdy session of parliament. Just to be on the safe side though you may want to think twice about suggesting that your kids get more involved in community programs – who knows where that could end up.

Vatican Claims Contraceptive Pill is Bad for the Environment, Sperm

A newspaper published by the Vatican has claimed that the contraceptive pill is polluting the environment and is responsible for male infertility.

The report in L’Osservatore Romano claims the Pill is responsible for releasing tons of hormones into nature through female urine, polluting the environment and causing unknown damage to the world around us.

But it gets better: these free ranging female hormones are also causing men to become infertile as well. The paper quotes studies by the WHO related bodies that some estrogen in the environment in large doses has carcinogenic properties, then matches them to male infertility.

The Vatican’s solution: natural methods of contraception, or to be more precise: not having sex (apologies for the translation):

The sad thing in all this is that if it is to regulate fertility, these are not the product required. The natural means of regulating fertility ( “NFP” or Natural Family Planning) are equally effective and also respect the kind of person.

But why stop there when you can cite the Universal Deceleration of Human Rights:

In this sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights can be said that the means of contraception violate at least five important rights: the right to life, the right to health, the right to education, the right to (their spread occurs to the detriment of the natural resources) and the right to equality between the sexes (the burden of contraception falls mostly on women).

Not surprising, a number of experts disagree with the Vatican on the matter.
