That is one hell of a dry spell, Tim Gunn.

Celibacy and asexuality have been in the news a lot this week, and the sex-free lifestyle got another big q-rating boost this week with Project Runway‘s Tim Gunn’s announcement that he has been sexless for the past thee decades. Gunn’s sexual abstention is a bit interesting, however- he talked about it publicly as early as 2006, but it seems that his departure from sex stems largely around a carried torch for a former partner.

Gunn stopped shagging in the early 80′s- at the height of the AIDS epidemic in the gay community- but he says the decision has been totally peaceful for him. Gunn credits a true love for his lack of lovemaking, and said on ABC’s chat show The Revolution:

“I haven’t had sex in 29 years. Do I feel like less of a person for it? No. Not even remotely… It’s very personal. I was in a very intense relationship for a long time. And my partner ended it, saying that, quite frankly, he was impatient with my sexual performance.”

So, does Gunn have any regrets about living for the past three decades with no sex? Not really- he says he is just pleased to have gotten through the scary period in gay mens’ health without getting sick:

“I think a lot of people simply retreated because they were concerned about their health. I certainly was… And I’m happy to be healthy and alive, quite frankly.”

Interestingly, though, Gunn doesn’t think that it means he will necessarily be celibate forever. He admits:

“I have feelings. It’s not as though I’m some barren forest. I don’t want to imply to anyone that I have a mandate that says no sex. I don’t. I don’t know what’s around the corner.”

Even scientists in laboratories equipped with devices, educational materials, diagrams and non-bedroom lighting can’t find the g-spot. The elusive orgasm shortcut is called the g-spot for short, but it’s full name is the Grafenberg spot, after the doctor that first officially acknowledged it in 1950. Described in medical literature as a small protuberance on the area in the distal anterior vaginal wall, experts, couples and people who apparently don’t have g-spots have been bickering about the contested existence of the area- which is said to cause instant climax when properly stimulated- for more than 60 years.

New research published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, conducted by urological surgeon at Yale Amichai Kilchevsky took “objective measures” to attempt again to officially locate the g-spot in female subjects, and noted that again the research “failed to provide strong and consistent evidence for the existence of an anatomical site that could be related to the famed G-spot.” Kilchevsky instead proposed that the sensations some females report instead stem from interior stimulation of the clitoris, and likened the g-spot area to the base of the penis in males.

Kilchevsky described a good reason to confirm or deny the existence of a g-spot in the first place- the pressures placed on women who feel inadequate because they believe they are missing out on much-hyped g-spot stimulation. He says:

“Lots of women feel almost as though it is their fault… Men are upset they can’t stimulate it for their partners. The reality is that it is probably not something, historically or evolutionarily, that should even exist.”

(Is it just me, or does that kind of make it sound like Bigfoot?) Kilchevsky said that the porn industry holds much of the blame for promoting the idea that women have a magical orgasm switch that either they or their partners are just too inept or sexually unskilled to find. He likened the pressure to that surrounding penis size, and said that due to porn “now men are all talking about penis size… the reality is, most men have the exact same-sized penis.”

Not the words you would expect to hear in this day and age, but according to ABC News the phone sex industry is flourishing with the help of at-home mothers.  ABC got its numbers form an organization called ratracerebellion.com, who are dedicated to finding mothers at home work.  According to them the phone sex industry has seen a 400% increase from at-home mothers.

The oldest profession goes High-tech! well not so high-tech.  With the explosion of the internet over the last 20 years, most at home sex workers have turned to video conferencing as their preferred way of making a buck.  The phone sex industry truly reached it peak in the 80′s and 90′s, back when 900 numbers were everywhere, but even though most phone companies give you the option of blocking calls to 900 numbers, anyone with a credit card and desire can still find an over the phone romp.

Chris Durst, CEO of Ratracerebellion.com, told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that many moms who reach out to her for help procuring phone sex work are embarrassed that they have to do it, but that necessity overrides personal feelings towards the industry.

The phone sex industry is still a huge industry with over $1 Billion dollars annually spent on the phone.  They say it is more of a niche market now, for those not wishing to be seen over a computer line or in person, but the money is still there.  Mothers are reporting income of between $10- $50 dollar per hour as a phone sex operator, with certain nights averaging much more than that.

Where are the fathers in all of this?  You would be shocked to know most (albeit a bit begrudgingly) are supportive, realizing that if all that stands between them and paying their bills or their mortgages is a dirty phone call, there is a lot worse things that can be done.

One of the husbands interviewed by ABC News had this to say about his wife’s new profession “That she has the ability to bring in a little extra each month and sometimes a lot extra each month and be able to not have to worry about how and where we’re going to get food or if the electric bills are going to be shut off, that’s a big deal … That overrides any sort of other worries I might have.”

Well here’s one for the old DUH! column.

It seems that scientists wanted to see if there was any validity to the old saying that drinking too much can lead to having unsafe sex, and potentially an HIV infection, so they got some grant money and conducted some research into the matter.

What had researchers confused over the issue it seems is the whole cause-and-effect thing. Was it too much alcohol that caused unsafe sex that could lead to HIV or was it more about personality traits in individuals where a disposition to risky behavior in general that was the cause.

The results of the research was published in the January issue of the journal Addiction and summarizes the results of 12 experiments that tested the cause-and-effect theory in a systematic way.

As anyone with any common sense would have surmised they found that alcohol consumption does indeed affect decision-making and the effect rises with the amount of alcohol consumed.

The more alcohol that participants consumed, the higher their willingness to engage in unsafe sex.

In these experiments, study participants were randomly allocated to one of two groups in which they either consumed alcohol or did not. Then their intention to engage in unsafe sex was measured. An increase in blood alcohol level of 0.1 mg/mL resulted in an increase of 5.0% (95% CI: 2.8% – 7.1%) in the indicated likelihood of engaging in unprotected sex. This result remained stable in sensitivity analyses aimed to correct for a potential publication bias.

As the end of 2011 getting closer, China is expecting about 780,000 people infected with the AIDS virus, mostly due to heterosexual sex. The state media, citing a report from the Ministry of Health and the United Nations, said that there will be an estimated 48,000 HIV infections and 28,000 deaths in China this year.

Other than unprotected sex, the virus spread can attributed also to unsanitary blood plasma buying schemes and tainted transfusions in hospitals. The Ministry of Health also said that heterosexual sex in China has already overtaken drug abuse as main cause of virus transmission.

About 88,000 people have already died in China since 1985 when the first case was found in the country.

China’s government is also now taking a more active role in battling the spread of the virus.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said that the State Council will be rolling out a special medical aid next year in regions with high HIV/AIDS incidence that would hopefully ease heavy financial burdens encountered by patients caused by treatment. The Premier also said that some AIDS drugs will be included in the essential medicine system so that its prices can be regulated and covered by basic health insurance.

After playing a more than century-old virgin for the series of popular Twilight films, it seems the man who plays Edward Cullen- Robert Pattinson- may have internalized some of the celibate vamp’s sexual hang-ups.

The predecessors to the films- the Twilight books- are notoriously associated with abstinence from sex, and Pattinson has talked about the strangeness of that sort of intimacy in a recent interview. Pattinson was asked about pre-marital sex by German tabloid BZ Berlin, and the Twilight star responded:

“I think that depends on how you grew up. I know people that wouldn’t do anything they regret later on. Everyone has to know for themselves. Sex is such a weird thing because it’s connected to so many emotions. It’s something really personal and that should be respected.”

The books are critiqued- and somewhat rightly so- for their unrealistic depictions of sex both before and after the big deal wedding scene. Both Edward and Bella are virgins prior to their honeymoon, and a significant amount of handwringing occurs over whether Edward’s super vampire strength will harm Bella when they consummate their marriage. Bella- as she does throughout the books- pressures Edward sexually, but after the first time, he destroys the room due to his big deal sexual skills. Bella is unfazed, but Edward begins his cycle of sexual self-hatred anew.

Of the dynamic, Pattinson told the tabloid:

Of course, because Bella and Edward are virgins and because of that we had to create those especially intensive emotions. It means a lot to the fans, that the two of them finally get closer to each other and we were aware of that responsibility.”

It seems that those silly people down under are getting a little too carried away with this whole social media thing, that is if a new study from Sydney-based company Tick Yes has any validity.

It seems that this social media marketing company (which should immediate raise the hair on the back of your neck) surveyed some 885 Australians about their social media habits and came away with some pretty interesting findings. Well interesting to them I guess from a “marketing” point of view anyway.

To give you a bit of an idea of the <ahem> results here is some tidbits in descending order.

• 51.6% access social media at work
• 41.9% while watching TV
• 34% on holiday
• 33.8% in bed
• 23.3% during meals
• 14.8% while shopping
• 21.5% in the bathroom
• 3.2% in a place of worship
• 2.8% (64% of them men) ‘during intimate moments’

Ya. so it seems that some idiots out there will stop what they are doing with a partner and check out what their Twitter stream or Facebook wall is saying.

Okay let me be the first one to say this … if you stop sharing a delightfully intimate moment with your partner then you are a great big loser. Really. Loser.

There is no other way to put it.

Loser.

Here’s a couple more take away points from the survey:

• 48.2% use social media to talk about a new purchase (56% of them women)
• 25.5% have used social media to contact a company for customer service or to ask a question
• 48.7% of people say their social media usage has increased in the last year
• 4.9% of people admit to being ‘addicted’ to social media, while 31.3% spend at least two hours a day on it

A man caught having sex with a donkey claimed during a court hearing that the animal was a hooker from the club.

Moyo, 28, was arrested by the police during a routine patrol when he was spotted getting intimate with the donkey inside his yard. He did not contest the accusations though he was not asked to enter a plea.

Moyo reasoned out in front of magistrate Mildred Matuvi:

“I had hired a prostitute and paid $20 for the service at Down Town night club and I don’t know how she then became a donkey. I think I am also a donkey. I do not know what happened when I left the bar, but I am seriously in love with the donkey.”

The magistrate ordered that Moyo be examined by two government psychiatrists.

We can only wonder if the prostitute-turned-donkey will be available on the witness stand as the case progresses.

Ryan and Dee Harris have been trying so hard to have a baby for the past 18 months. They did and actually conceived their now 16-month-old son Lincoln while Ryan was asleep.

A small-scale study in Australia through the Centre for Integrative Clinical and Molecular Medicine has found that the herb Fenugreek may help- when consumed regularly- to bolster men’s sex lives.

The study tracked men between the ages of 25 and 52 for six weeks, and found improvements in the scratcher were detected in just 21 days. One of the lead researchers commented on the relation of sexual health to overall health:

‘It probably works to increase testosterone or androgen levels, which decrease with age,’ says Dr Raj Persad, consultant neurologist. ‘If it’s proven to be safe, this is good news. Men with good sexual health live longer than those who without.’

In the group of men in the study using fenugreek, libido was boosted 25% over the course of the study. Arousal scores rose from 16.1% to 20.6% in the fenugreek-treated men, versus 16.6% in the control group. “Bioactive compounds” in the herb are thought to stimulate hormone activity, possibly enhancing sexual performance in men.

According to a study (presumably of people who have never tried to shag in a car), automobiles are the “most exciting” place Americans cite in a study of exciting places to have sex commissioned by condom-maker Trojan.

Then again, I drive a Beetle. But even in a spacious SUV or truck, car sex is riddled with pitfalls- seatbelts digging into your back, lack of legroom, difficulty changing gears. Not so, according to an impressive 48% of those surveyed who find getting it on in the car to be a massive turn on. Remember that the next time your buddy picks you up to go to Walmart, because no one is boning in the driver’s seat.

33% of respondents apparently have some kind of voyeur-kink or axe to grind, because they found it sexiest to get it on in someone else’s bed. Not cool, 33%. The study also found that the average American has sex 120 times per year, and that those who live in the Northeast get laid more than people in other regions. Philly residents have the highest rate of sexual satisfaction at 82%, followed by New Yorkers at 81% and people from Atlanta at 80%.

People in Los Angeles do it the most, at 135 times each year- because movie roles don’t land themselves! And people in Philadelphia, though they like it the most, have sex the fewest times per year at 99, followed by Dallas at 104. You can read a bit more about the study over at USA Today.

Psychologist Darrel Ray, who was raised in a conservative Christian household, conducted an online survey to determine the impact of religion on sexual satisfaction.

Ray set out to confirm whether his own experience- that his sex life vastly improved when he ditched religion- bore out among others. Ray, who authored the book The God Virus: How God Infects Our Lives and Culture, sought out 14,500 people who had once been religious or raised in a religious environment before becoming atheist or agnostic. What Ray discovered is that guilt seems to heavily influence sexual satisfaction in many specific subsets of Christianity.

The survey did not adhere to social science study guidelines, but Ray reported the results as follows:

Those who had been raised Mormon with their strict views about sex, showed the highest rating among those who had sexual guilt with an average score of 8.19 out of 10. Others with similar responses were Jehovah’s Witness, Pentecostal, Seventh Day Adventist and Baptist.

Catholics, on the other hand, rated their guilt at 6.34 and Lutherans came in at 5.88. Atheists and agnostics were the lowest in guilt at 4.71 and 4.81.

University of Texas at Austin associate professor Mark Regnerus dismissed the survey as biased and said Ray’s methods were “unscientific,” adding:

“It appears that it was a ‘fill it out if you want to’ kind of survey that is not random, not nationally representative, and relies entirely on self-selection,” he said. “In other words, they have data from people who felt like filling out a survey on atheism and sex. As a result, I am not surprised at their findings.”

Regnerus said the results were based on “hearsay or guesswork,” and opined:

“I don’t fault the author for running the survey he did, but it does display research methods which do not meet the standards of most published social science.”

Indeed, the results would have been a bit more interesting even just stacked against responses from religious folk who consider themselves sexually satisfied. Do you agree with Ray’s findings? Does religion or lack thereof significantly affect your view on sex?

Those who like to start off the day with a latte/coitus combo and a morning run could be upping their risk of a terrifying brain aneurysm, according to Stroke: The Journal of the American Heart Association.

Per a study conducted by Dutch researchers, there are eight main triggers that sharply increase risk of an intracranial aneurysm (IA)- blood vessels in the brain that can swell and rupture. Only 2% of the population has IAs, and fewer of than that suffer ruptures, but IAs can be serious and deadly.

Researchers ID’d the top risk factors and the percentage at which they contribute to the risk:

• Coffee consumption (10.6 percent)
• Vigorous physical exercise (7.9 percent)
• Nose blowing (5.4 percent)
• Sexual intercourse (4.3 percent)
• Straining to defecate (3.6 percent)
• Cola consumption (3.5 percent)
• Being startled (2.7 percent)
• Being angry (1.3 percent)

Sound like your to do list today? Drinking alcohol was also determined to temporarily increase risk. Study lead author Monique H.M. Vlak, M.D, said that the events were sometimes preceded by nausea or vomiting, but oftentimes did not present with any other symptom. Vlak commented:

“Reducing caffeine consumption or treating constipated patients with unruptured IAs with laxatives may lower the risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage,” Vlak said. “Whether prescribing antihypertensive drugs to patients with unruptured IAs is beneficial in terms of preventing aneurysmal rupture still needs to be further investigated.”

Information was gathered for the study via a questionnaire administered to individuals who had experienced an IA regarding their activities directly prior to the event.

Not only were women included in a study “far more devastated and adversely affected [after a breakup] than those that were using condoms,” that particular notion is actually part of a far larger debate, as to whether there are natural anti-depressant qualities in semen. A doctor-guy who writes for other doctors even was fired over the debate when he quipped, insulting some female surgeons:

“So there’s a deeper bond between men and women than St. Valentine would have suspected, and now we know there’s a better gift for that day than chocolates.”

Okay, Dr. Lazar Greenfield, that’s just creepy. Popular Science aggregates much of the backstory that developed after a 2002 study of nearly 300 college women- some of whom had condomless sex, some of whom used a condom and some of whom abstained entirely. Interestingly, there was ‘no significant difference’ in depression rates between abstainers and condom users, which suggested to researchers that semen may be an influencing factor.

Popular Science also spoke to Gordon Gallup, an evolutionary psychologist at SUNY Albany- Gallup offered this assessment of the results:

“Seminal plasma evolved to control and manipulate the female reproductive system so as to work toward the best interests of the donor — the male,” Gallup explains. “If you begin to think about semen in those terms, then the fact that semen might have antidepressant properties becomes a lot more interesting in that it may promote bonding between the female and her sexual partner.” Such bonding, Gallup says, could increase the male’s chances of developing a long-term reproductive relationship with a female that would work to his reproductive advantage.”
