Sandra Fluke, the former Georgetown law student who was the center of attention after conservative radio show host Rush Limbaugh called her a “slut” and a “prostitute”, is now officially endorsing Barack Obama in his upcoming campaign.

Fluke, who was ridiculed by Limbaugh for her speech at the House Democrats in support of mandating insurance coverage for contraceptives, has written an in-depth op-ed to CNN explaining her reasoning behind her endorsement as well as her issues with Obama’s opponent, MItt Romney.

“The stakes are high this November, for the strength of our economy and the direction of our country,” says Fluke.

“For me, like a lot of us, the stakes are also personal: The choice I make in the voting booth will significantly affect my friends, my loved ones and my generation. Like many millennials, I am concerned about the job market and costs of college. And I’m worried about access to affordable health care for all.”

Mentioning her controversy with Limbaugh, Fluke refers to the importance of women’s rights and the sacrifice of the generations before her that helped get to where we are.

“I could never have predicted just how intensely personal this election would become. When I was publicly attacked for testifying before members of Congress, I became even more keenly aware that the rights that generations of women fought so hard to achieve could be rolled back easily. That began a national conversation that I believe highlighted President Barack Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney’s vastly different values and visions.” says Fluke.

The former Georgetown law student goes on to say how Mitt Romney is anti-middle class and anti-women, and even says that he panders to extremists, reports CNN.

“Romney lacks the leadership to stand up to extremists in his own party, then he’s not the president we need. At a time when women’s rights especially are under virulent attack, we cannot elect a leader who won’t or can’t stand up to those extremists and protect the rights that generations of women have fought so hard to ensure,” she continues.

Sandra Fluke ultimately feels that President Obama offers the most consistent values and that he provides an overall vision for America that will be more beneficial in the long run.

You can read Sandra Fluke’s entire op-ed to CNN here.

What do you think of Sandra Fluke’s reasoning behind her decision to officially endorse Barack Obama?

Sandra Fluke is quickly becoming a household name. The Georgetown Law student was recently called a “slut” and a “prostitute” by conservative radio shock-jock Rush Limbaugh for her stance on women’s health and contraception, in what has become a media phenomenon, causing Limbaugh’s career to become crippled (if only temporarily) and Fluke to become something of a flag-bearer for women’s rights. Fluke contributed an op-ed to CNN today defending her stances and founding something of an ideological rallying point for the cause.

Though she never once mentions Rush by name, she does refer to the incident and makes it clear that she won’t be coerced into silence by name-calling. “Opponents of reproductive health access demonized and smeared me and others on the public airwaves,” she writes. “These smears are obvious attempts to distract from meaningful policy discussions and to silence women’s voices regarding their own health care,” but adds that they have “clearly failed” because people all over the country have sent her messages of support, including President Obama, who called her personally.

Supporters include women who suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome who need birth control to prevent cysts, sexual assault victims, Catholic women on the side of family planning, and the men who support these women. “Restricting access to such a basic health care service, which 99% of sexually experienced American women have used and 62% of American women are using right now, is out of touch with public sentiment. … Attacking me and women who use contraception by calling us prostitutes and worse cannot silence us.”

What do you think the future holds for Sandra Fluke? For her cause?
