Last year, Samsung released the Galaxy Mini S5570, a solid option for those who wanted a Galaxy, but perhaps wanted something just a bit smaller–and significantly cheaper. Apparently, enough people were into it that Samsung is getting ready to release a successor.

GSM Arena picked up on a promotional image from Samsung, which not only reveals the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 S6500, it says that the phone will be released at some point this month. At what price point, we don’t know yet.

The listing doesn’t show the full specs of the phone, but it does show that the Galaxy Mini 2 has seen a few upgrades. It now sports a larger 3.3 inch screen, a higher resolution, and an 800MHz processor with 3GB of internal storage, which is a step up from its predecessor.

GSM Arena reports:

The mini 2 S6500 will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and keeps the 3MP camera and 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity from the original. Design-wise, the S6500 has the rounded corners of the first mini, but looks closer to a baby Galaxy S with that home button hump at the lower back.

The site figures that the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 will debut at the Mobile World Congress later this month, if not ahead of it.

Samsung, maker of all things electronic, will have their latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note, available on AT&T starting February 19th. The smartphone is an extension of their Galaxy line of smartphones that continue to be very popular among the Android crowd.

The company has had great success with Android and this phone is a bit different from the others. No, it doesn’t have any special features aside from the others. The big difference? A bigger battery to support the bigger screen.

Just how big of a screen are we talking? Oh, just 5.3 inches, a full inch bigger than the largest smartphones currently on the market. They wanted something that was more in between a phone and a tablet. Consumers can use the phone with a stylus and looks to be extra special for artists, though anyone who wants a great viewing experience when surfing the web or watching videos.

Being that it’s so large, some people will definitely want to check it out at an AT&T store first before purchasing. For someone who has big hands, it will fit great but for someone who has smaller hands, it may actually be too big. And yes, it will still fit in a pocket, but is definitely pushing it.

What are the specs?

5.3 inch WXGA HD Super AMOLED screen

1280×800 resolution (best of any smartphone)

1.4GHZ dual core processor

1GB RAM

16GB internal storage, MicroSD card slot for more storage

8 megapixel rear-facing camera with 1080p video support

2 megapixel front-facing camera

2,500 mAh battery

4G LTE

Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Pre-orders start February 17th and will be available for $299.99 on a two year contract.

Would you buy the Samsung Galaxy Note if you were in the market for a new phone and on AT&T?

If you’ve been holding out on picking up the Samsung Galaxy Nexus until the price drops down a bit, Amazon has dropped the price of Google’s flagship Android 4.0 phone to a mere $99.99.

Before you get too excited, there’s one little detail you need to keep in mind: the new low price only applies to new Verizon Wireless customers, and you’ll of course need a new contract to take advantage of the cheap Galaxy Nexus. If you already have an existing contract with Verizon, you’re out of luck.

The price drop on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus comes not even a month after Verizon started selling the phone for $299.99. Amazon’s price drop only applies to Verizon Wireless, however, so don’t expect any cheaper prices on the phone from other carriers just yet.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is, in case you forgot, the first and only phone to come with Google’s latest Android OS, Android 4.0–or Ice Cream Sandwich. The Galaxy Nexus packs a 1.2Ghz dual core processor, a front-facing 1.3 MP camera and a 5MP rear camera, 1GB of RAM, and a 4.65-inch 1280 x 720p HD Super AMOLED display.

Samsung and Apple have been at one another’s throats ever since the market for their respective smartphones began to heat up and now Samsung is throwing out all the stops in a new Samsung Galaxy S II commercial that plays off what the company’s believes is the iPhone 4S’ faults.

In the ad Samsung attacks the iPhone 4S over battery issues and it’s iPhone 4 replicated form facotr.

The ad then goes on to show Apple fanboys being “Samsunged” by showcasing the devices free turn-by-turn navigation software rather than the the devices major selling points which includes a dual-core processor, 8-megapixel camera and the Google Android OS.

The Samsung Galaxy S II was released in late 2011 and has sold more than 5 million units in South Korea alone.

It’s hard to tell if Samsung is playing the jealous little sibling to the Apple iPhone 4S but given the devices awesome features I tend to agree with their ad. Be the judge for yourself:

It’s a simple ad but perhaps that’s the entire point, unlike Apple which touts 500,000 apps (of which you might use .0000001% of those apps) Samsung has instead decided to focus on simplicity, which goes against the robust nature of Google Android while providing “ease of mind” for anyone looking for something that doesn’t have the work “Apple” associated with it.

What did you think of the Samsung Galaxy S II ad spot is it enough to convince people on the fence to give Samsung a try or should they have added more about the phones capabilities?

Forget that 3G version of the Samsung Galaxy Note that has already passed through the FCC for approval because the AT&T version has also arrived and it features 4G data capabilities via LTE technology.

According to the filing the device, filed under SGH-i717brings with it GSM/Edge capabilities along with UMTS/HSPA+ (21Mbps) and the superior LTE bands 4 and 7.

The FCC have already approved the device following final emissions testing.

The Samsung Galaxy Note has been a much-talked about device recently thanks to the devices ability to make calls while still featuring a “mini-tablet” type setup with a 5.3-inch Super AMOLED display that offers 1280×800 resolution output.

Powering the 3G version of the device to date has been the Google Android “Gingerbread” OS version along with a 1.4GHz dual-core processor which may be pushed to 1.5GHz for the LTE version.

AT&T Wireless has not yet provided a release date or pricing for the LTE version of the devices however the 3G Galaxy Note has been confirmed for a mid-February launch in Canada.

The original international version of the Galaxy Note has already seen more than one million shipments to retailers.

Are you willing to wait for the LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy Note to arrive on store shelves or will the3G version suffice?

Apple has been going after Samsung and other smartphone manufacturers with one lawsuit after another.
Apple has been going after Samsung and other smartphone manufacturers with one lawsuit after another. This time, they claim the electronics manufacturer is infringing on their ‘slide-to-unlock’ patent.

Now, patent infringement lawsuits are nothing new to the World of smartphones and tablets. Debates and patent cases have been heating up the last several years and the tech giant is one of the companies that’s spearheading the movement.

Steve Jobs once was quoted saying “I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong” in regards to Android and “I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”

It seems that the company may be trying to live up to his words.

Via Apple Insider:

“In Apple’s first suit that directly names Samsung’s Android-based smartphone, the company claims the Galaxy Nexus infringes on the “slide-to-unlock” feature first introduced with the original iPhone in 2007 and subsequently patentedwith the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in October 2011. In 2006 the company also obtained a “utility model” registration for the feature in Germany.”

“FOSS Patent’s Florian Mueller describes a “utility model” as a limited fast-track patent that companies are allowed to file for alongside traditional patents, and Apple has done both for the “slide-to-unlock” in Germany.”

At the end of the day, it’s a good thing that Samsung is selling a lot of product so they can afford all these lawsuits.

Do you think Apple is warranted with all these patent infringement lawsuits?

The iPhone 4S continues to sell very well and is a popular choice when it comes to getting a new smartphone, but Samsung, the maker of the very popular Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets, has a laugh with their new commercial.

Similar to their previous commercial mocking long lines at the Apple store and the Galaxy S II having a larger screen, this time they’re doing part of the same, as well as hinting at the fact that their smartphone (which is also all Android phones), come with free turn by turn navigation.

The commercial is sure to upset many avid Apple users, that’s for certain. This also happens to be the company’s first ever Super Bowl ad.

Via CNET:

“Samsung and Apple are like a couple of bickering sisters. “I hate you. I love you. I hate you. I can’t remember whether I hate you or I love you. I can remember suing you.”

“So, in the run-up to the Super Bowl, Samsung has released another ad that pokes and pokes at Apple fanboys and fangirls. There they are waiting in line for, who knows, the iPhone 4S. They are watching a very cool unboxing video. Then along comes one of their roommates to toss them a charger.”

It’ll be interesting to see what Apple has to say about the whole thing or if they’ll just keep their head down and not bring any further attention to the ad. Check out the commercial below and let us know what you think about it in the comments.

UPDATE: Samsung came out and said that they never considered acquiring RIM nor had any interest.

While Android and iPhone continue to do incredibly well, RIM has had some issues with growing their BlackBerry line of smartphones. A new report surfaced that Samsung may be interesting in acquiring the company. This announcement led to stock jumping nearly 10 percent.

Via Washington Post:

“An acquisition of RIM, whose stock fell 75 percent last year amid market-share losses, would give Samsung an operating system that would help it differentiate from competition as it seeks to stay ahead of Apple Inc. Samsung now makes phones based on Google Inc.’s Android software and Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Phone, operating systems also used by rivals such as HTC Corp.”

As with any report, it’s not 100% fact and the sources, well, they weren’t identified by Boy Genius Report, the tech blog that originally announced the possible acquisition. The possibility is there and would be interesting to see what Samsung would do with the BlackBerry OS and line of smartphones and more recently, the PlayBook tablet.

RIM needs to make something happen this year as they’ve continued to decline. This acquisition could help with that, that is of course if they’re even willing to sell. If it doesn’t go down, that means they could potentially license out their OS and technology to Samsung.

“The company’s share of U.S. mobile-phone subscribers in the three months through November dropped to 6.5 percent from 7.1 percent in the previous quarter, according to research firm ComScore Inc. Samsung, based in Suwon, South Korea, increased to 25.6 percent from 25.3 percent, and Apple gained 1.4 percentage point to 11.2 percent.”

Do you own a BlackBerry and if not, would you consider buying one?

Patent disputes are bigger than ever and no company is more outspoken about it than Apple, the World’s largest tech company. Known for their great products as well as great design, the company has been targeting other manufacturers of similar devices for a while now.

Samsung seems to be their biggest target. They even tried blocking Samsung Galaxy sales in the US. Anyways, it seems they’re back at it again, this time filing for patent infringement and wanting a sales ban on 10 different smartphones in Germany.

Via Los Angeles Times:

“Filed in Dusseldorf Regional Court, Apple’s suit — which calls for a ban on the Galaxy S II, Galaxy S Plus and eight other models — isn’t the only front in the ongoing international patent battle between the two firms, reports said Tuesday. Apple also filed a suit against five Samsung tablets “related to a September ruling” that imposes a sales ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1, according to a Bloomberg report.”

Not a whole lot of details have been released yet as to why, but it’s likely to have something to do with Apple claiming that Samsung is stealing their designs, designs that they have patented.

They recently went after the Galaxy Tab 10.1 because it supposedly “copied the design of the iPad in a way intended to confuse customers”. The tablet is not able to be sold in Germany thanks to that lawsuit.

Going forward, patent infringement lawsuits aren’t going to slow down anytime soon. Apple is intent on going after each and every manufacturer who may be infringing on any of their patents. And with record breaking profits, they’ve got plenty of money to throw at lawyers.

Is Apple justified or is their massive success getting to their head?

In a partnership with Samsung, Microsoft’s latest Surface gadget, 2.0, is now available for pre-order and will be shipping this month. What is Microsoft Surface? Introduced years ago (and in a much more bulky package might I add), it’s a tabletop that is basically a complete touch screen and essentially a giant tablet.

At one time, it was pegged as the future of computing and was very futuristic at it’s time, but it never really did take off. The biggest reason is the price tag. The original Microsoft Surface cost $12,500 for a commercial unit and that’s just the unit itself without the stand.

This new version however is priced less, but not much less. Version 2.0 will run you $8,400 for just the tabletop and $9,049 including the matching stand. For that price, you’d expect pretty amazing specs, right? As far as hardware goes, not exactly, but it gets the job done.

40 inch 1080p LCD touchscreen Gorilla Glass display

2.9GHZ AMD Athlon II X2 processor

AMD Radeon HD 6750 graphics card with 1GB GDDR5 RAM

4GB RAM

320GB storage

4 USB ports, SD card reader, Gigabit ethernet, Wireless N support, Bluetooth

Windows 7 Professional 64 bit

What’s interesting to note is that the touchscreen is capable of supporting up to 50 simultaneous touch points. Quite a bit more than your average iPad or tablet.

Now, this is a pretty amazing device at the end of the day. The price tag will keep it out of the mass majority of consumers hands and more into businesses hands. The concept is still fairly new and maybe one day we’ll see an affordable tabletop of this nature in more homes across the globe.

It seems that there is a real movement to turn just about everything we touch or look at into a computer screen of one type or another. While most of the ideas never make it to market we very often get to see what the brightest minds in technology are thinking about at shows like this year’s CES, and this offering from Samsung is one of those items.

Going by the extremely clever name of the Samsung Smart Window the company is looking to try and convince us that the idea of a picture window that doubles as some sort of giant iPad screen is a great idea and the next big thing.

Not only is it just a plain old window put it comes with things like a digital blinds app for those times you don’t want anyone staring in through your really cool window. It also comes with a one-way mirror app for those times you want to go all interrogating on someone. It can do all this fancy stuff while using about 1/10th the amount of electricity than the standard LCD screen.

Samsung this isn’t just something that you’ll see in some science fiction movie as they plan to go into production within a few month; but before you start drooling over how much you want one of these there is no word of how much it will cost you or what the size of your home owners insurance premiums will be.

In the meantime though here’s a video of the Smart Window being shown off.

Smartphones have absolutely exploded the last several years, ever since the debut of the original iPhone in 2007. While that may be the case, expect fewer models this year according to executives.

One of the biggest reasons why isn’t because they’re not selling, it’s because too many models leads to confusion and having a small line of products to choose from is much more enticing to consumers.

Where there is too much to choose from, consumers can get overwhelmed and unsure of what to go with.

“Speaking at CES this week, Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha reportedly said that the company plans to make fewer phone models in 2012, in part because the variety is confusing to some consumers. HTC is thinking along the same lines. “It’s a goal to have less phones,” Drew Bamford, vice president of user experience at HTC, said during a panel discussion at the show on Wednesday.”

“When pushed, Ryan Bidan, director of product marketing at Samsung, said that while he wasn’t sure what the model count for his company would be in 2012, he agreed that phone makers should drive down the number of phones. “Sheer SKU proliferation is a problem,” he said.”

This is more of a good thing than a bad thing. Also, being that there will be fewer models, this also allows more focus for developers to put towards keeping new phones updated and hopefully running the latest version of Android, 4.0.

Smartphones running Windows Phone won’t be slowing down this year, but it’s very clear why.

“While Microsoft doesn’t produce phone hardware, it’s hoping to see an increase in the number of models running Windows Phone, but that’s because it’s a relatively new entrant to the market and isn’t available on many models yet. “We have a stated objective” to have a broader selection of handsets running Windows Phone on the market, said Aaron Woodman, a director from Microsoft.”

There’s a lot of interesting news coming out from CES 2012 regarding new televisions, and Samsung is one of them. The company’s new line of Smart TV’s are planning on having voice recognition, face recognition, and the ability to control via gestures.

All of it sounding very similar to what can be done with the Xbox Kinect, an incredibly popular and record selling product from Microsoft. These features will all be thanks to a built-in camera and microphone, and quite beefy specs on-board.

Here’s more details about some of the Smart TV’s:

“The Samsung ES8000 LED TV features a dual-core processor for app multitasking, for example toggling from Netflix to a movie to NHL Game Center and back without quitting or relaunching any apps. It’s got a slim bezel, a unique U-shaped stand and is available in sizes up to a colossal 75 inches. Samsung also showed off a 55-inch Super OLED TV. It too has a built-in camera and mic for voice and gesture control recognition, as well as a dual-core processor for app multitasking.”

We’re starting to see a more advanced and hopefully user friendly line of televisions that are transforming into more of a computer than just a device to watch shows or movies. The VP of Samsung America, Joe Stinziana, calls it a “giant leap forward for the TV industry” and he’s right.

And this line is definitely resembling more of a computer with news from MacWorld about the ability to upgrade without buying a new TV entirely.

“From this year, its smart TV lineup will also have upgrade slots, allowing for faster hardware and graphics to be plugged in without the need to buy a completely new product. The first upgrade kits will become available next year.”

Competition in the mobile market keeps heating up. Samsung, maker of all things electronic, says they’re confident they’ll outsell Nokia this year and end their 14 year reign of being the biggest seller of mobile phones.

Quite the declaration from the company’s Vice Chairman and CEO, Choi Gee-sung. Samsung seems to be onto something after quickly rising to become the number one maker of smartphones in the third quarter of 2011.

Their line of Galaxy Tablets and Galaxy smartphones, especially the Galaxy S II, continue to be a very popular seller. Despite patent disputes with Apple, they continue to sell a lot of smartphones and tablets.

“Samsung’s bullish forecast is in line with some analysts, including Royal Bank of Scotland, betting Samsung would build on its momentum to overtake Nokia in 2012, but on average analysts have expected Nokia to keep its lead on the market.”

“According to the latest polls by Reuters, Nokia was expected to sell 418 million phones in 2011, versus Samsung’s 320 million, the gap narrowing this year to 388 million versus 359 million.”

Nokia is exclusively using the Windows Phone 7 OS and the Nokia Lumia 900 is their latest generation and is very promising. With that said, it’s really going to come down to a battle between Android and Windows Phone and frankly, Android is still top dog.

“”Considering how strong Nokia still is in the emerging markets, Samsung’s expectation seems to imply that Nokia will miserably fail in mature markets,” said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.”

As with anything, only time will tell and with it being the beginning of 2012, who knows what both companies have up their sleeves just yet.

The Galaxy Nexus, Google’s new flagship smartphone, is expected to be available in white starting in 2 weeks for the UK and in early February for people of the US. Most smartphones are typically released in black, though manufacturers have managed to roll out white models shortly after the original launch of a phone.

It’s an added revenue stream for phone manufacturers and from the looks of it, there’s consumers out there who want a white phone versus the standard black. Just look at Apple and the white and black iPhone. So far, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is doing quite well with sales of nearly 2 Million in just a couple of months.

Supposedly the white 16GB version already exists in some stores in the UK, though that hasn’t been confirmed. Being that this is the latest and greatest smartphone, be prepared to shell out a good chunk of change.

People in the UK can except to pay £614.95 retail and for US customers, no price has been revealed yet, though expect it to be the same as the original model, $649.99 or $299.99 on a two year contract.

Galaxy Nexus specs:

4.65 inch AMOLED display with 720P HD resolution

1.2 gigahertz dual core processor with 1 GB of RAM

32GB of internal storage

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

8.94mm thin OR .37 inches

5 megapixel rear facing camera, 1.3 megapixel front facing camera

1850mAh battery

4G LTE capable

What kind of phone do you have? Are you an Android user, or do you prefer something else such as the iPhone or maybe even BlackBerry?

Samsung on Friday announced they have shipped one million units of their Smartphone/Tablet crossover known as the Samsung Galaxy Note.

The device is currently available in Europe and Asia where sales have been brisk, especially in France, Germany, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The Samsung Galaxy Note features a 5.7-inch phone display with 1280 by 800 pixels of resolution (large by any standard) which also makes it a tablet worth mini-device. The phone/tablet also comes equipped with the Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS and sports a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor along with 16 gigs of internal storage.

Called a “pocketable tablet” by the team at Engadget the device works best when paired with a bluetooth headset (do you really want to hold a device this big up to your ear?).

My personal favorite part of the device? It’s awful nickname the “phablet hybrid” which was given by internet jokesters who also couldn’t figure out what the Samsung Galaxy Note was suppose to be.
While sales have been brisk All Things Digital was quick to point out:

“These are shipments into the channel we’re talking about here, not end sales to consumers. That said … sources tell AllThingsD that the device actually sold out in Hong Kong during its first month at market. So, clearly, the device is resonating with a certain portion of the mobile market.”

I still recall when the HTC Advantage X7500 reached the market, at the time nobody was sure what to call it but they were selling out quickly until the company had to reduce prices drastically to clear the market of leftover units.

Unlike the X7500 Samsung has several benefits on their size, they are now the leader in Google Android devices, their unit is smaller then the HTC device and tablets are now a mainstay of the market and not what was thought to be a passing fad.

Here’s a Newsy.com report featuring the Samsung Galaxy Note:

Have you or do you plan to get your hands on the Samsung Galaxy Note?

As you may recall, back in September Apple successfully petitioned a German court to block the sale of the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 on the grounds that the tablet infringed on patents held by Apple – basically, Apple says that Samsung copied the iPad.

The victory in Apple’s global patent war against Samsung seems to have been short-lived, at least as far as the Germany battleground goes. After the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was blocked in Germany, Samsung quickly moved to roll out a non-patent-infringing version, the Galaxy Tab 10.1N.

Apple insisted that the “new” tablet still infringed on their patents, and once again took the matter to German courts to block the sale of the newer version – but it appears that they lost. On Thursday, a judge rejected Apple’s claims, issuing a preliminary ruling that the new Galaxy Tab 10.1N no longer infringes on Apple’s intellectual property.

“According to the court’s assessment, the defendant has moved away sufficiently from the legally protected design,” Judge Johanna Brueckner-Hofmann said in court on Thursday (via Reuters).

Again, the ruling in Germany is only preliminary, so Samsung will have to wait until the final verdict, which is expected to happen February 9, before they start celebrating. Still, one might imagine that Samsung can’t help but be excited right about now, especially after their recent victory over Apple in Australia.

Earlier this year at IFA Samsung announced that their Smart TVs would soon receive support for YouTube videos in 3D and now that exclusive access (for the short term) has finally become a reality with the company rolling out YouTube 3D support.

Under YouTube’s current offerings Samsung Smart TV users will have access to more than 8000 videos shot in 3D and the company says they will be teaming up with YouTube to expand user options in the near future.

At this time it’s still unclear if Samsung plans to shoot various video clips in 3D or if they will convert old 2D YouTube clips into the 3D format in an attempt to grow out the 3D video brand.

At this time YouTube 3D videos can only be views in North America, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Samsung Smart TV users can gain support for the new YouTube 3D feature via a free update available through the company’s Smart TV app portal.

Would you like to watch YouTube videos in the 3D format from your TV?

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is one of the first Google Android powered smartphones to cause lines to form outside of Verizon Wireless stores and that fact mixed with rumored supply issues have caused the phone to sell out immediately.

Lines at some Verizon stores wrapped around the block when the phone debuted on Thursday morning and some customers in the U.S. told Google blog Android and Me that store employees told them they were receiving less than ten handsets for launch day at select locations.

Hours after release Samsung pushed a software update for the device which greatly improved the UI and offered better Wi-FI and 3G/4G connectivity solutions.

In the meantime Verizon says they will continue to receive new stock daily although supply chain expectations have not been revealed by the company.

Verizon customers can pick up the device for $300 with a two-year contract while Amazon is selling the device for $150 with a two-year contract for users willing to accept a shipping delay of over a week.

Are you still waiting to get your hands on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus?

Thanks to its recent success in the Google Android Smartphone market electronics manufacturer Samsung has announced the sale of more than 300 million cell phones in 2011. According to the company they surpassed that milestone by the end of November.

If those numbers hold up that would mean that the company has easily surpassed their 2010 milestone of 280 million units sold.

Speaking of their successes the company pointed to the Samsung Galaxy S II which offers a dual-core processor on a 4.3-inch display with a Google Android powered OS. The Galaxy S II managed to sell more than 10 million Smartphones in the first five months on the market.

Feeling confident about the company’s successes mobile group president JK Shin said they hoped on “extending this success” in 2012. Samsung could meet his expectations once the faster and more robust Samsung Galaxy S III is revealed.

In the meantime a recent breakdown of smartphone sales in the United States shows Apple and Samsung in a near dead heat although those numbers could change once Apple reveals overall sales numbers for the iPhone 4S.

Are you a fan of the Samsung Galaxy line of devices or do you think Apple wins the Smartphone battle hands down?
