Who is the world’s greatest guitarist? If you trust Rolling Stone’s opinion, then there is no greater guitarist than Jimi Hendrix. Rolling Stone has just released a list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all-time and the leader of the Band of Gypsys tops the list.

Rolling Stone assembled a pretty impressive panel to create the 100 greatest guitarists list. Trey Anastasio, Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple), Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains), Billy Corgan, Warren Haynes (The Allman Brothers Band), Lenny Kravitz, Robby Krieger (The Doors), Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Tom Morello, Carlos Santana, and several other musicians gave their opinions to Rolling Stone to create the list.

Hendrix, famous for songs like “Purple Haze,” “Foxey Lady,” “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and “Hey Joe,” inspired generations of musicians to pick up a guitar.

Tom Morrello writes: Hendrix guitar was “like a divining rod of the turbulent Sixties – you can hear the riots in the streets and napalm bombs dropping in his “Star-Spangled Banner… His playing was effortless. There’s not one minute of his recorded career that feels like he’s working hard at it… His riffs were a pre-metal funk bulldozer, and his lead lines were an electric LSD trip down to the crossroads, where he pimp-slapped the devil.”

Not familiar with Jimi’s music? Here’s a little reminder.

Here’s the rest of the top five as chosen by Rolling Stone.

Eric Clapton #2

Eddie Van Halen writes: “There was a basic simplicity to his playing, his style, his vibe and his sound. He took a Gibson guitar and plugged it into a Marshall, and that was it. The basics. The blues.”

Jimmy Page #3

Joe Perry writes: “Listening to what Jimmy Page does on guitar can transport you. As a lead player, he always plays the right thing for the right spot – he’s got such remarkable taste.”

Keith Richards #4

Nils Lofgren of the E Street Band writes: “Keith wrote two-and three-note themes that were more powerful than any great solo.”

Jeff Beck #5

Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers writes: “Jeff Beck has the combination of brilliant technique with personality. It’s like he’s saying, “I’m Jeff Beck. I’m right here. And you can’t ignore me.”

What do you think of the greatest guitarists of all-time list? Is Jimi Hendrix really the world’s greatest guitarist?

Christmas came early for thousands of squeeing True Blood fangirls this year- first in the form of a naked Rolling Stone cover featuring a blood-spattered Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgard.

Then a widely circulated snippet from the article began circulating, wherein the sexy Swede who plays Eric Northman admits he could give a frick about modesty on the set, unlike co-star Moyer, who hides his junk in a sock. While Paquin relies on “patches” to maintain a modicum of clothedness, Skarsgard says he doesn’t care who sees his johnson:

Alexander Skarsgard goes sockless. “I don’t want a sock around it, that feels ridiculous,” he told the magazine. “If we’re naked in the scene, then I’m naked. I’ve always been that way.”

Stephen Moyer is more modest and opts for a sock but just out of regard for others. “I’ve got nothing to hide,” he said. “I just think it might be embarrassing for the crew.”

God bless Europeans and their free-wheeling, penis-exposing ways.

[Image, slightly edited to remove Sookie]

Top commander in Afghanistan Gen. Stanley McChrystal has reportedly submitted his resignation in the wake of a controversial “Rolling Stone” interview that heavily criticized the Obama administration’s handling of the war in Afghanistan.

According to a timeline on CNN, Defense Secretary Robert Gates released the following statement earlier today regarding the interview (titled “The Runaway General”) with journalist Michael Hastings:

“I read with concern the profile piece on Gen. Stanley McChrystal in the upcoming edition of ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine. I believe that Gen. McChrystal made a significant mistake and exercised poor judgment in this case. We are fighting a war against al Qaeda and its extremist allies, who directly threaten the United States, Afghanistan, and our friends and allies around the world. Going forward, we must pursue this mission with a unity of purpose. Our troops and coalition partners are making extraordinary sacrifices on behalf of our security, and our singular focus must be on supporting them and succeeding in Afghanistan without such distractions. Gen. McChrystal has apologized to me and is similarly reaching out to others named in this article to apologize to them as well. I have recalled Gen. McChrystal to Washington to discuss this in person.”

President Obama was presented with the piece last night, and was, by all accounts, displeased with the story. By this afternoon, senators were calling for General McChrystal’s resignation, and reports indicate that he has indeed resigned:

[Updated at 3:50 p.m.]Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-North Dakota, a member of the Senate Democratic leadership, called for McChrystal to step down, telling CNN that the remarks in Rolling Stone were “unbelievably inappropriate and just

can’t be allowed to stand.”

[Updated at 4:41 p.m.] Gen. Stanley McChrystal has submitted his resignation, Time magazine’s Joe Klein told CNN, citing an unnamed source. CNN is working to confirm Klein’s information.

Official confirmation has not yet been received that Gen. McChrystal has resigned.

Update: Gen. McChrystal is said to be meeting with President Obama tomorrow to discuss the situation:

[Updated at 5:55 p.m.] President Obama said that Gen. Stanley McChrystal showed “poor judgment,” but he added that he would wait until meeting in person with McChrystal before making a decision on McChrystal’s future. Obama is expected to meet with McChrystal on Wednesday.

In what can almost be described as an “Economic Meltdown For Dummies,” Matt Taibbi’s article “The Great American Bubble Machine” in the latest issue of Rolling Stone is a great primer on the machinations behind the current financial crisis that reads like a good novel.

You may remember Taibbi’s recent, almost viral ranty response to AIG bigwig Jay DeSantis’ New York Times letter of resignation. Taibbi got internet-wide props for the scathing piece, which gave voice to the lack of sympathy and palpable rage felt by many Americans when reading DeSantis’ sob story. An excerpt:

DeSantis has a few major points. They include: 1) I had nothing to do with my boss Joe Cassano’s toxic credit default swaps portfolio, and only a handful of people in our unit did; 2) I didn’t even know anything about them; 3) I could have left AIG for a better job several times last year; 4) but I didn’t, staying out of a sense of duty to my poor, beleaguered firm, only to find out in the end that; 5) I would be betrayed by AIG senior management, who promised we would be rewarded for staying, but then went back on their word when they folded in highly cowardly fashion in the face of an angry and stupid populist mob.

I have a few responses to those points. They are 1) Bullshit; 2) bullshit; 3) bullshit, plus of course; 4) bullshit. Lastly, there is 5) Boo-F***ing-Hoo. You dog.

Taibbi is now making waves with “The Great American Bubble Machine,” crafting an argument that Goldman Sachs “has engineered every major market manipulation since the Great Depression” and that they’re already planning their next heist. Taibbi breaks it down into five major bubbles, five huge market manipulations preying on the American public, hedging wild bets against our futures and better interests.

According to Taibbi, here’s the scam template:

Goldman positions itself in the middle of a speculative bubble, selling investments they know are crap. Then they hoover up vast sums from the middle and lower floors of society with the aid of a crippled and corrupt state that allows it to rewrite the rules in exchange for the relative pennies the bank throws at political patronage. Finally, when it all goes bust, leaving millions of ordinary citizens broke and starving, they begin the entire process over again, riding in to rescue us all by lending us back our own money at interest, selling themselves as men above greed, just a bunch of really smart guys keeping the wheels greased.

And the heartwarming history behind Goldman’s first major con during the Great Depression:

Beginning a pattern that would repeat itself over and over again, Goldman got into the investment-trust game late, then jumped in with both feet and went hog-wild. The first effort was the Goldman Sachs Trading Corporation; the bank issued a million shares at $100 apiece, bought all those shares with its own money and then sold 90 percent of them to the hungry public at $104. The trading corporation then relentlessly bought shares in itself, bidding the price up further and further. Eventually it dumped part of its holdings and sponsored a new trust, the Shenandoah Corporation, issuing millions more in shares in that fund – which in turn sponsored yet another trust called the Blue Ridge Corporation. In this way, each investment trust served as a front for an endless investment pyramid: Goldman hiding behind Goldman hiding behind Goldman. Of the 7,250,000 initial shares of Blue Ridge, 6,250,000 were actually owned by Shenandoah – which, of course, was in large part owned by Goldman Trading.

Getting deja vu yet? The next round of looting, according to the piece, didn’t occur until the dot-com bubble of the late 90s. Wild speculation and IPOs of never-profitable net properties were small potatoes compared to what came next.

Bubbles #3 & #4 were the housing bubble and gas-price gouging . As Jon Stewart famously skewered at Jim Cramer, Goldman Sachs and their ilk hedged their bets against us again in banking on their own shady mortgages defaulting and cashing in on the fallout. Speculation on the oil market soon after lead to gas costing upwards of $4 a gallon in the summer of 2008, but most Americans were too busy freaking out about their impending homelessness to notice the connection.

Bubble #5 was looting the bailout, but according to Taibbi, the next bubble will be even bigger- energy futures and carbon credits, and “groundbreaking new commodities bubble, disguised as an ‘environmental plan,’ called cap-and-trade.” Taibbi caps it off with a kind of acceptance- the “great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money” will keep on sucking- but at least now we know about it.
