Ricky Gervais was back to host the Golden Globes 2012 on Sunday night, after his faux-controversial roasting of celebrities last year. This year, however, at least one celeb target bit back harder (and better): Madonna.

After introducing the pop legend as “all woman. She’s always vogue. She’s a material girl. And she’s just like a virgin [theatrical cough],” Madonna took the stage and quipped back:

“If I’m still just like a virgin, Ricky, then why don’t you come over here and do something about it? I haven’t kissed a girl in a few years — [long dramatic comedy pause] — on TV.”

Gervais could then be seen sprinting across the back of the stage, as if he were running from the prospect of having sex with Madonna. Because, you see, he found the idea of sleeping with Madonna abhorrent. I … I would say your sides are probably safe from splitting.

Overall, Gervais’s hosting at the 2011 Globes was viewed widely as career suicide in the immediate aftermath of the awards, but of course that was always a myth played up by the Globes and Gervais to enhance his ‘edgy’ credentials. Gervais was back in the role by November.

The truth is Gervais’s 2011 ribbing was (a) not remotely ‘edgy’ (b) very hit-and-miss and (c) directed at the exact same people he’s matey with off-stage (and recruits in his sitcoms), despite his wafer-thin pretense that he despises shallow celebrity culture.

Still, I did like The Office a lot. Oh, to have that Gervais back again. Here’s the (I’m sure very well-prepared) exchange between him and Madonna:

Okay, Hollywood Foreign Press Association, you can’t keep getting us to cover your supposed feud with Ricky Gervais over his quasi-edgy Golden Globes jokes if you keep inviting him back to host.

Last year, both Ricky Gervais and the powers that be trumped up the whole, “oooh, career over because the jokes were too sharp!” thing before and after the British comic hosted the awards show, with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association strongly suggesting Gervais was banned from the awards show after it ran, to much predictable buzz. Gervais made light of “certain… Scientologists” that conceal their sexuality as well as Robert Downey Jr.’s colorful past and the box office success of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie film The Tourist during his last Golden Globes hosting gig.

Even as the announcement was made that Gervais would be heading up the awards ceremony, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association tried to carry the thin-ice act a bit further, saying:

“While many welcome Gervais’s return, not everyone is happy with the decision because last year his blunt one-liners targeting big-name celebrities caused anger and resentment in some quarters.”

Gervais himself has been cackling on his Twitter feed about the high-profile trolling opportunity that has just been afforded to him again. He joked as he tweeted a pic of himself and current and former Oscar host Billy Crystal:

“Just told Billy Crystal he’d better not use any of my holocaust or pedophile material at The Oscars. He agreed (true).”

CNN host Piers Morgan tweeted to Gervais that he wanted to call dibs on the first apologetic interview, to which Gervais replied:

“@piersmorgan: Dear @rickygervais - please can I have the first ‘Sorry if I offended anyone” What if I’m not sorry? Like last time. Ha ha.”

Why fix what constantly insults you, causes controversy, and brings in a huge audience? Yep, Ricky Gervais has been asked to host the Golden Globes again.

Gervais, who first hosted the Globes in 2010, caused an uproar after the ceremony for hurting the sensitive feelings of various celebrities. The audience loved him and his monologues kept people talking about the Golden Globes for weeks.

After initially saying that Gervais would never host the Golden Globes again, the Hollywood Foreign Press asked Gervais to host again in 2011. Gervais agreed and managed to offend even more people.

Again, organizers said that Gervais would not be back in 2012. But low and behold, Ricky has been asked back to the Golden Globes in 2012.

The HFPA writes on its website:

“After weeks of rumours it’s finally official—Ricky Gervais will be back to host the Golden Globes for a third year, the HFPA president Dr. Aida Takla O’Reilly announced. The association voted overwhelmingly for the controversial British comedian’s return and NBC’s senior vice president of special events and late night programming, Doug Vaughan, said: “Ricky is delighted to be coming back.  He said the Golden Globes show is the most fun he has ever had.”

Ricky confirmed his commitment on Twitter, saying:

“Just told Billy Crystal he’d better not use any of my holocaust or pedophile material at the Oscars. He agreed (true),”

Earlier this year, British comic Ricky Gervais was supposedly in hot water for his roasting of celebrities at January’s Golden Globes. Gervais spent the Globes ceremony ripping into celebrities with his trademark snarky remarks, even slipping in a gay joke about Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

The comedian was absent from last night’s Emmy Awards, though did deliver a pre-recorded message joking that he was “no longer allowed on American soil” during award ceremonies. What followed was a speech with diplomatically timed edits over any potentially contentious remarks.

“I’ve won a few Emmys myself. I’ve lost a few too,” grinned Gervais, “I was up for five last year and I lost them all to other shows that in my opinion were absolute [edit] ‘Schindler’s List’ but then went on to do TV with ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘The Pacific’ for HBO, which in my opinion is the greatest channel in the world [edit] apart from [edit] Fox [edit] that is, [edit] obviously.”

He then ended with a variation on his “Thanks to God, for making me an atheist” closing line from the Globes.

Apparently, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is displeased with Ricky Gervais, a man who is famous for being bitchy and making people uncomfortable, for being bitchy and making people uncomfortable- if an anonymous source allegedly from the association is to be believed.

Gervais unsurprisingly attacked some of Hollywood’s most snarked about celebrities, even throwing in a gay joke about Tom Cruise and John Travolta. According to the anonymous source quoted by PopEater, not only did the comments DQ him from future Golden Globes hosting gigs- whomever made the comment insinuated Gervais could be retaliated against professionally:

“Ricky will not be invited back to host the show next year, for sure,” a member of the HFPA tells me, adding that Gervais’ relentlessly mean shtick could have even larger consequences. “For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated. He humiliated the organization last night and went too far with several celebrities whose representatives have already called to complain.”

It’s been widely speculated that Gervais was dressed down for his cheek during the event, and the comedian was notably absent for a large portion of the evening- disappearing for over an hour before he returned to the stage just before the ceremony concluded. Whatever may have been said to Gervais, it didn’t stop him from a controversial closing remark:

“Thank God for making me an atheist.”

Since most of celebrity news is snark-infused these days, is the HFPA being a bit touchy here? Does America want to see a kissy-lovefest, or is roasting celebrities a bit more in line with the public’s tastes nowadays?

Ricky Gervais returns to the big screen for The Invention of Lying.

The movie takes place in an alternate reality in which lying – even the concept of a lie – does not even exist. Everyone from politicians to advertisers, to the man and woman on the street speaks the truth and nothing but the truth with no thought of the consequences. But when a down-on-his-luck loser named Mark (Ricky Gervais) suddenly develops the ability to lie, he finds that dishonesty has its rewards. In a world where every word is assumed to be the absolute truth, Mark easily lies his way to fame and fortune. But lies have a way of spreading, and Mark begins to realise that things are getting a little out of control when some of his tallest tales are being taken as, well, gospel. With the entire world now hanging on his every word, there is only one thing Mark has not been able to lie his way into: the heart of the woman he loves.
