Apple is notorious for being able to make a huge profit on quality merchandise, so the idea of a budget iPhone was initially sketchy for them. However, even Apple knows the economy is demanding cuts to maintain profitability, especially with mid-range Android phones getting more and more affordable. Thus, the budget iPhone was born (the plans, anyway).

What’s odd about this is that Apple has been planning a budget iPhone since 2011.

However, in order to maintain profitability, the way the budget iPhone is built had to change. Apple couldn’t just sell the same thing at a lower price and expect to keep the profits rolling in. Nintendo has been doing that and it’s not faring so well for them now. The budget iPhone case is now planned to be a mix of plastic and glass fiber, but the display isn’t changing.

The display for the budget iPhone will use the same four-inch retina display panel found on the iPhone 5. This is based on the predictions of KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a reliable source for Apple rumors. The big question remaining is whether or not the budget iPhone will differ in appearance from the more expensive variety. Oftentimes, the only way to tell the S model apart from the regular model is to hold them both side by side.

Apple may decide to keep using the four-inch display for budget model iPhones in the future, while regular iPhones will get the larger screens. The iPhone 5/S is going to look smaller in comparison by the time we see 2014 and the iPhone 6, as manufacturers push to release smartphones with larger displays. It seems unlikely that Android is going to start looking superior to the iPhone.

How do you feel about the budget iPhone using the same screen as the iPhone 5?

#Apple‘s ‘budget’ iPhone expected to have same 4-inch display as #iPhone 5 (Apple Insider) – bit.ly/YftGZB

Apple has officially unveiled the new MacBook Pro during WWDC 2012, which includes a 15.4-inch Retina display, an impressive 220 pixels per inch, and measures only 0.71 inches thick, making it the smallest and lightest of any MacBook Pro yet, by 25%.

The Retina technology is the same that Apple currently features on the iPhone and iPad, and the computer also includes updates to its Aperture photo-editing software, as well as the video-editing software, Final Cut Pro X, which photographers, videographers, and video editors are sure to be excited about.

The new MacBook Pro also includes quad-core processors, up to 2.7GHz, two thunderbolt ports, a backlit keyboard, multitouch trackpad, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 support. CNet reports that the device can support up to 16GB of 1,600Mhz RAM, and can also support up to 768GB of Flash storage. Its battery can survive for an impressive 7 hours on a single charge.

Finally, before upgrades, the MacBook Pro comes with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB hard drive, with base pricing at $2,199. USA Today reports that Apple also unveiled new versions of the MacBook Air, including faster processing chips and lower prices, with the base 11-inch screen having a $100 price drop to $999.

Mac OSx Mountain Lion will make its debut on the App Store in July for $19.99 and features voice dictation, although there was no word on the new operating system being integrated with Siri. USA Today reports that iOS 6 will be released this fall as an update for the iPhone 3GS and newer.

Apple announced on Monday that the new iOS will have 200 new features, including enhancements to Siri, allowing the talking assistant to be available on the iPad. It will also be able to talk about sports scores and player statistics. Apple will also be dumping Google Maps in favor for its own service, which features turn-by-turn directions, with large graphics and traffic information.

The new MacBook Pro and Air are available in stores and for shipping on Monday. There was no word on the release of the highly anticipated iPhone 5.

Rumors are now circulating that indicate a “Retina Display” for the next generation MacBook Air, following its introduction into Apple’s iPad line with the new iPad which was released earlier this year.

Apple defines a Retina Display as any screen with a pixel density so high that an end user cannot distinguish individual pixels. This high def display was first introduced into Apple’s iPhone line with the iPhone 4 and then made its way to the iPad earlier this year. The migration of this technology to the MacBook Air, which is the closest Apple laptop to the tablet form factor, both in terms of weight, size and instant on capabilities, is a logical next step for Apple.

According to Apple rumor website 9to5Mac: “Apple’s new MacBook Air will not see major changes across the entire computer like the next-generation MacBook Pro, but this update will truly be all about the Retina Display…Apple is preparing both new 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch models. These new Airs lack notable design changes, but feature fast and power-efficient Ivy Bridge processors and improved graphics engines to support the Retina Display, according to supply chain sources. The new Airs will also use improved Apple internal battery technology in order to support the battery life required by high-pixel-density screens such as the Retina Display, according to sources familiar with prototype versions of the super-thin notebook’s internal components.”

The new Airs will not likely be announced at this years Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2012) next month because, MacRumors reported, “Apple still working to meet the Retina display’s power requirements within the MacBook Air’s thin form factor.”

When we hear Apple tout its amazing “Retina Display” we assume that regardless of the device we’re looking at the resolution output will look the same, according to NPD DisplaySearch however that isn’t the case.

NPD recently examined various Retina Displays on Apple devices and found that the resolution output varies greatly. For example the iPad features 264ppi pixel density, far less than the 326ppi shown on the iPhone 4.

As NPD writes:

“But since ‘retina display’ is a marketing term with no specific definition, Apple is able to use it how it wants.”

The company also found variations in the technology Apple claims to be using. While Apple says it uses the IPS panel some of its suppliers are using FFS (fringe field switching) instead.

Because of those variations NPD claims that Apple really means that “retina display” simply refers to “high performance display” and not a specific set of standards.

Apple is believed to receive its displays from Sharp, LG and Samsung. Samsung and LG are said to be using a-Si TFT technology which Apple may have switched to while Sharp works out issues with its new IGZO display. In any case a-Si TFT is only capable of a 264ppi upper limit.

In the meantime the new iPad is expected to have “at least” twice as many LEDs as the iPad 2 (nearly 72 in total) which means higher power consumption which likely explains the bigger batter with no real change in battery life span.

Do you think Apple should strongly define the term “Retina Display” or is it our job as consumers to just assume that it means “high end” or “high performance” display?

The iPad 3 will launch in March and its most significant upgrades will be a QXGA 1,536 x 2,048-pixel HD display and significantly longer battery life. There are very little details of what will be available with the iPad 4 except that Digitimes said it will have 9.7-inch display along with “much upgraded hardware specifications and integrated applications.”.

The release of the iPad 3 will also be coupled with a continued run of the iPad 2 which will be downgraded to $399.

Other sources than Digitimes, have said that the rumors of iPad 4 are previews of the 2013 model.

The iPad has dominated the tablet market since its launch, capturing a full 65% of the market for 2011 (estimated). This year iPad’s market share will probably fall a bit more due to the huge amount of Android tablets hitting the market but will still be more than 50% of the total.

Will you be purchasing an iPad3 or iPad 4?

As with any showman the words used in conning convincing the gullible masses are often carefully selected to give the presenter the most bang for the buck and if anyone knows this better than anyone it is Steve Jobs. After all no one in the tech world puts on a better show that he and this last keynote speech that introduced the iPhone 4 was no different.

One of the key selling points of the new version of the iPhone was its display which using something called Retina Display is claimed by Steve in his speech to have a higher resolution that the human retina. Um .. ya … okay …. can we have some sensible talk now?

Thankfully someone who knows what they are talking about has come forward to point out that Jobs is wrong. In a post by Charlie White on the DVICE blog display expert Raymond Soneria had these few points to make.

Steve Jobs claimed that the iPhone 4 has a resolution higher than the Retina — that’s not right:1. The resolution of the retina is in angular measure — it’s 50 cycles per degree. A cycle is a line pair, which is two pixels, so the angular resolution of the eye is 0.6 arc minutes per pixel.

2. So, if you hold an iPhone at the typical 12 inches from your eyes that works out to 477 pixels per inch (ppi). At 8 inches it’s 716 ppi. You have to hold it out 18 inches before it falls to 318 ppi.

So the iPhone [4] has significantly lower resolution than the retina. It actually needs a resolution significantly higher than the retina in order to deliver an image that appears perfect to the retina.

It’s a great display, most likely the best mobile display in production (and I can’t wait to test it) but this is another example of spec exaggeration.

Of course reality doesn’t really need to come into the picture when talking to the iPhone faithful.
