The Coachella Music Festival has announced its exciting lineup for 2012! Hip hop fans will go crazy over the reunion of legends Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg and will be salivating in anticipation of what the Doctor has in store for them. Alternatively, indie fans will rejoice to headliners Radiohead or the bluesy The Black Keys. Other massive indie names include Pulp, Bon Iver, Florence and the Machine and the Arctic Monkeys.

The Coachella Festival is held in the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, in the Inland Empire’s Coachella Valley.
Before Portishead released their debut album, Dummy, in 1994, trip-hop’s broad appeal wasn’t apparent, but the record became an unexpected success, not just in Britian – where it won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize – but also in America, selling over 150,000 copies before the group ever toured there.

After their initial success, the band, comprised of Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons, and Adrian Utley withdrew from the spotlight for three years until their self-titled second album, Portishead, was released in 1997.The group then split for several years to concentrate on solo projects before rejoining forces in 2005.

Currently on tour in the U.S. (also a first since 1998), Portishead is scheduled to play 2 sold out nights at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC, and will follow those performances with visits to Chicago, Los Angeles, Berkeley, Seattle, and Denver all in the month of October.

In addition to roping in Portishead, Fallon has also managed to book an Oct. 3rd appearance by Radiohead, who are coming fresh of the heels of back-to-back late night performances on SNL and The Cobert Report.

For those of you who have never had the privilege of listening to Portishead, I give you Roads:

All morning, the web has been buzzing with an unusual rumor.

Apparently, it is said, Brit-mope band Radiohead is set to play a surprise free gig in Manhattan’s Zucotti Park. The location is host to the Occupy Wall Street protests, a fluctuating gathering of individuals that has been ongoing since September 17th. Although the group has no central stated goal yet, celebrities such as Susan Sarandon and Michael Moore have visited the protests since they began nearly two weeks ago and the rally continues to draw attention- as well as accusations mainstream media is, for the most part, ignoring the protests.

If it goes ahead as rumored, the purported Radiohead concert could raise the profile of the movement significantly. The band recently annoyed some New York City metro area fans when it sold out two tiny shows at the small-ish venue the Roseland Ballroom. Ticketmaster spokeswoman Jacqueline Peterson said at the time:

“We know people are frustrated, more than a half a million people were attempting to purchase just a couple of thousand Radiohead tickets, most people did not end up with tickets and are understandably disappointed… We are fans ourselves and we know the disappointment of not securing tickets to a highly anticipated event, this is why we work so diligently to evolve and provide ticketing solutions that help ensure that all of the tickets end up in the hands of real fans, not with scalpers.”

Radiohead reportedly denied the show at Occupy Wall Street was a go, but rumors persist. Regardless of whether the event goes ahead as rumors suggest, it’s likely to create some traffic snarls as well as mass transit congestion downtown as fans flock to the location just in case.

XM fratboys Opie and Anthony have been doing their “Homeless Shopping Spree” stunt- where around a dozen homeless men from the streets of New York City are given $100 each to blow in a posh local mall- for about ten years now.

It’s demeaning and horrible and cruel and exploitative, although any of those words can generally be used to describe any segment of Opie and Anthony’s radio show as a whole. But sometimes good things come out of squicky things, and this clip is an odd moment of joy in an otherwise abhorrent publicity stunt. One of the contestants in this years upcoming “Homeless Shopping Spree,” a man known simply as “Mustard,” was given a guitar to play a song (he doesn’t own one, being homeless and all.) The man did a simple, bluesy-gruff cover of Radiohead’s “Creep,” and it’s been getting passed around since because it’s pretty amazing.

You can read more about it here and here on Reddit, or here on Digg, but definitely check out the clip below:

Hollywood is following the path of television networks with plans for an Internet-based movie premiere.

Hollywood is following the path of television networks with plans for an Internet-based movie premiere. Michael Moore has announced he’ll release his new project, an election-focused film called Slacker Uprising, exclusively on the Web — and for free, too. Downloads will be offered at no charge via Blip.tv for the first three weeks of release.

Moore’s movie takes viewers along his journey through 62 cities in the 20 U.S. “swing states” that could heavily influence the November vote. Moore speaks to crowds to try to encourage young “slackers” to register to vote — and, not surprisingly, stirs up some controversy along the way.

It’s a risky move for Moore, whose last two documentaries were two of the three most profitable in movie-making history. So will it pay off? Well, financially, probably not. There doesn’t seem to be any major monetization or ad profit plan in place. While Moore does intend to eventually sell DVDs of the project, that certainly can’t compare to the box office cash it would have brought in.

Still, for a guy who probably doesn’t need the money, it may just be worthwhile in the end. As with Radiohead’s pay-what-you-want online album release experiment, the exposure and publicity may outshine any lack of direct income. That, of course, more than pays off down the road. With people already flocking to watch television online, the idea of a free Web movie release undoubtedly plays to a demographic’s video-centric habits — and love him or hate him, the outspoken jolly king of the documentary world may have stumbled onto a smart strategy. I suspect it won’t be the last semi-mainstream Internet movie premiere, but rather the first in a trend that’ll only move upward.
