A 33-year-old man from South Yorkshite was killed last night when the stage collapsed ahead of a Radiohead concert. Scott Johnson, a drum technician, was identified as the victim. Three other people were injured during the Radiohead accident.

Police say that Johnson was on stage during a sound check ahead of Saturday’s concert when the top portion of the stage collapsed.

Radiohead cancelled the concert shortly after the accident.

The band wrote:

“Due to unforeseen circumstances tonight’s [concert] at downsview park has been cancelled. Fans are advised not to make their way to the venue.”

The BBC reports that in addition to Johnson, one person was seriously injured during the incident. According to the Globe and Mail, a 45-year-old unidentified victim was being treated at the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Two other people experienced minor injuries during the accident.

Erin Peacock, who witnessed the Radiohead accident, said:

“We didn’t see any ambulances speeding off immediately, which led us to believe either everyone’s okay or people are pinned.”

Alexandra Halbert, a vendor at the show, witnessed the stage collapsing. Halbert said:

“I turned around and the whole top part of the stage had collapsed, as well as the scaffolding. It seemed like there were a couple of minutes of hesitation and no one knew quite what to do. It was only afterwards that we all realized how serious it was.”

Toronto police are reporting that one person is dead and three more have been injured following a stage collapse while setting up for a Radiohead.

Police and paramedics responded to the scene at Downsview Park in Toronto who arrived early for the concert have taken to Twitter to report that emergency crews immediately cleared the area, according to The Star. They have also said that one person who was injured was transported to the hospital, while the other two were treated at the scene.

The Globe and Mail reports that Ian McClelland, the deputy commander at Toronto EMS stated that the collapse occurred as stage equipment was being erected, noting that there was “some kind of failure.”

David Thornley, who was standing on John Dury Drive, the road that leads to the venue, stated that the stage fell at about 4 p.m, about an hour before gates were supposed to open for the show. He told reporters that he saw ambulances speeding by for 45 minutes after the incident.

Lindsey Bradbury, a concert worker for Handpicked management, was getting ready to begin work at one of the beer tents when she saw the commotion. She stated that before the collapse, people were hanging screens on the stage. She added that: “Apparently the band was supposed to practice just before [the collapse].”

She also recalled hearing people yelling “First aid!” Soon after, Radiohead tweeted that:

“Due to unforeseen circumstances tonight’s [concert] at downsview park tonight has been cancelled. Fans are advised not to make their way to the venue.”

This is not the first time a stage collapse has made news. Last summer, a stage at the Indiana State Fair collapsed, killing 6 and injuring 43 others. The collapse was blamed on wind from an approaching thunderstorm.
