While here in North America everyone is still slapping each other on the back over the slap down that both SOPA and PIPA got in Congress the reality is that the over intent behind what those two bills stood for hasn’t stopped as evidenced by the more global ACTA treaty.

Unlike the two American bills however ACTA is still on the move to being accepted by governments around the world with the current signatories including: Canada, Australia, Japan, United States, Morocco, New Zealand and Singapore. That doesn’t mean that it is clear sailing for ACTA as protests against it have spread across Europe and several key countries pulling out of the treaty agreement.

This past weekend saw a huge multi-country protest with thousands of people coming out to march against the signing of the treaty. The current number of protests and protesters sits at:

Germany – 25,000

Sofia, Bulgaria – 4,000

Bucharest, Romania – 300

Warsaw, Poland – 500

Paris, France – 1,000

Prague, Czech Republic – 1,500

Cluj, Transylvania – 2,000

Budapest, Hungary – 1,000

Vilnius, Lithuania – 600

London, England – 200

As much as the proponents of ACTA would like us to believe that this is just about copyright and piracy just as they tried with SOPA and PIPA the fact is a lot more. As James Plafke from Geekosystem put it recently

A general concern with ACTA is that could make ISPs responsible for their users’ copyright infringements, which would lead to ISPs implement some kind of nefarious surveillance in order to protest themselves. Along with that, users could end up blacklisted from ISPs if they’re caught infringing on copyright a few times, and as we know, copyright infringement is a mucky territory to delve into, and you might be taking part in it without actually being aware you are.

Thankfully the number of countries in Europe that have either withdrawn support for ACTA or are reconsidering their position on it is growing as the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia have delayed proceeding on the treaty.

A group of Occupy Wall Street protesters were arrested on Thursday as the group protested outside of the Iowa campaign headquarters of presidential contender Ron Paul.

The group was in town protesting GOP candidates and President Barack Obama when five members were cited for trespassing after repeated requests were made for them to leave the public area surrounding Ron Paul’s campaign office in the Ankeny suburb of Des Moines.

Arrests outside of Republican campaign offices seems to be a new trend this week, just one day earlier 7 protesters were arrested outside of Republican Mitt Romney’s Des Moines headquarters. After the first wave of arrests OWS spokeswoman Danielle Ryun said more arrests were likely, adding:

“They’re all going to get equal play on this,” Ryun said. “We are very disillusioned with every candidate.”

OWS has promised to disrupt political gathers in an effort to follow candidates around the country while displacing their activities.

Later on Thursday protesters were expected to reach the Iowa Democratic Party headquarters where eight protesters were arrested on December 19 after they tried to make their way into the parties Des Moines campaign center. Protesters will then move on to other Republican candidates on Friday.

The OWS arrests on Thursday followed a similar pattern for OWN protesters, police simply asked the protesters to move to a public sidewalk for which five refused and were arrested.

According to police they were called by a nearby store owner who was worried that the protesters would scare away potential customers.

Ryun told Newser:

“It would be great if we could show up, issue our concerns and have the candidates acknowledge us and change their platform.”

Further the protesters say locked campaign doors “signal that they have become disengaged.”

Personally I view the locked doors to signal that political parties during an upcoming election year don’t want 15 people flooding their office with picket signs and chants that would ultimately disrupt their election process.

The group was protesting Ron Paul over his plans to dismantle the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Do you think politicians should have allowed protesters into their office or is the safety of their staff more important?

LOS ANGELES, CA – Occupy LA protesters have cost the city of Los Angeles an estimated $2.35 million since they took to the cities streets.

According to the Los Angeles Times much of that money has been spent paying police officers overtime, which in turn helps the local economy.

The high cost of watching over the protesters does not include some other costs such as repairing the lawn where protesters have been camping for two-months along with a vandalized fountain outside City Hall.

In the spending report time-and-a-half was paid to regular force and general services police who patrol city parks, an amount equal to approximately $1.5 million.

City officials expect that at least $1.7 million will be added to the cities expected $72 million debt while the rest will be covered by standard operating costs.

While that number may seem high the Michael Jackson single-day memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in 2009 cost the city $3.2 million for an event that didn’t even last the entire day.

In the meantime the city attorney has suggested that protesters could be sued to recover the cost of damages caused by demonstrators at the City Hall fountain incident.

In response to the attorney’s suggestion of a lawsuit one spokesman for Occupy LA called the cities estimated figures “outrageous” and accused the city of using protesters as scape goats for the cities own operating expense problems.

As Carlos Marroquin told the LA Times:

“This was a peaceful movement,” and “They’re the ones who decided to use that amount of police.”

Do you think the city went overboard by putting 1,400 police officers on duty for a peaceful protest?

California Congressional Representative Darrell Issa, the fiery chairman of the House Governmental Oversight Committee, wants to know why the Obama administration is allowing Occupy Wall Street protesters to destroy $400,000 worth of landscaping and refurbishment by putting their encampment in a D.C. park.

Issa is interested in knowing why Interior Secretary Ken Salazar supported the decisions of the National Park Service to not evict the protesters who had built a tent city despite the park service’s rules barring any type of camping in the park. According to Fox News, Issa said “NPS’ laxity toward enforcing its own rules has resulted in protesters killing “newly planted grass that had been funded by the stimulus” and “wasting much of the hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxpayer money used to rehabilitate McPherson Square.”. “While the merits of this stimulus funding are debatable, we can all agree that once the federal government invested the funds, no government agency should have allowed it to be damaged or destroyed when it legally could have been prevented,”.

The national park service had issued a statement shortly after Issa’s inquiry stating “The National Park Service and U.S. Park Police are firmly committed to upholding Americans’ First Amendment rights while also enforcing our nation’s laws, guarding public safety, and protecting the resources with which we are entrusted,” which he also said to Fox News

Issa used the Obama administrations own stimulus tracking resource, Recovery.gov, in order to find out just how much had went into the park and therefore how much was being destroyed by the protestors. According to Recovery.gov, $424,600 was awarded to a local firm to rehabilitate the park, installing new grass, putting in concrete curbs, installing refurbished benches, light poles, water fountains, paint, chain fencing, trash cans and light meters.

Issa said much of the newly built park was “damaged or destroyed”. He blamed the Park Service for allowing what he deemed “illegal camping” using great detail about NPS’ definition of camping. He claims that NPS violating its own rules and definitions by declaring that the protest was a vigil instead of an encampment.

The DC police had tried to evict the protestors on two previous occasions but were stopped when a district judge ruled that the Park Service must issue a vacate order 24 hours in advance, which until know they have refused to do.

Should the Occupy Wall Street Crowd be permitted to camp out in the DC park?

Emery Abbedl-Latif, 24, and Micha Balon, 19, were wed on Sunday morning just one month after the couple met while praying in Zuccoti Park, the temporary home for hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protesters.

The couple met while looking for a good spot to pray and instantly fell for one another. Speaking about their wedding Balon said:

“This is a good way not to make the marriage about ourselves … We are fighting for equality here.”

Balon is currently studying human rights and the Middle East while Abdel-Latif is currently thinking about attending law school.

Speaking about their quick courtship and wedding Abdel-Latif said:

“I’m not sure I believed in love before I met her.”

The couple married in a small traditional Muslim wedding right next to a bronze statue of a businessman that survived 9/11. The statue is now a memorial to those people who didn’t survive the twin towers attack and according to a friend of the couple:

”It was very symbolic,” and “I just wanted to cry.”

If their marriage can survive the test of time at least we know for certain one good thing came out of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Citing safety concerns New York officials on Friday cut power to Occupy Wall Street protesters who have been living in Zuccotti Park.

Police and firefighters arrived in the park on Friday morning and used a bullhorn to ask protesters for their generators.

According to one protester city officials announced:

“We are here to take the generators, could you please bring them up to us on the corner of Broadway and Liberty Street.”

None of the protesters brought their power producing equipment to the request area at which point more than 30 police officers and firefighters moved into the park and confiscated five or six generators, including one which ran on vegetable oil. Officials also confiscated at least a dozen gas canisters.

While protesters were using the generators to power their electronic devices the power outage comes at a time when their next event is decidedly low-tech with protesters using paper airplanes to deliver their messages. As part of the paper airplane event OWN protesters will mark on Manhattan’s five largest banks and throw paper airplanes made out of protest letters.

Do you think New York City officials overstepped their bounds by taking away Occupy Wall Street generators or were safety concerns a valid reason for the confiscation?

130 Occupy Chicago protesters were arrested at 1 a.m. on Sunday morning after they attempted to camp in Grant park after closing time.

The protesters were joined by 3,000 people in Chicago earlier in the day as they marched from Federal Plaza in the loop and arrived in Congress Plaza at Michigan Avenue and Congress Parkway.

The park which closes at 11 p.m. witnessed 130 people who decided to stay in Congress Plaza while hundreds of other people moved onto the nearby sidewalk which is located just off park district property.

Chicago Police made several announcements about the park closing time and then proceeded to create a barricade around those protesters who chose to stay.

By 2:40 a.m. 130 people had been arrested and a few hundred more remained on sidewalks towards the east and west sides of Michigan Avenue until approximately 3 a.m.

The newest round of arrests follows 175 people who were taken into custody by police last Sunday around the same 1 a.m. time period.

As police led people away early Sunday morning protesters stood on the sidewalk and chanted against the police:

“You serve the 99 percent,” “Whose park? Our park!” and “Why no press? Let the media in!”

Occupy Chicago is part of a larger movement that started as Occupy Wall Street and has since spread to various locations throughout the United States and around the world.

Last week Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel spoke with Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and according to the Chicago Tribune he said he wanted the law department to talk with protesters ”to see if we can find a way to go forward so they can continue to express themselves …”

Do you think the protesters should have been allowed to stay in Grant Park or should they have listened to police and simply moved over to the public sidewalks located next to the park?

Lemony Snicket (author Daniel Handler) has led his characters through A Series of Unfortunate Events and now the author has posted 13 observations on Occupy Wall Street to help kids understand what is happening in New York City.

Posted on the Occupy Writers website Snicket offers such advice as:

“People who say money doesn’t matter are like people who say cake doesn’t matter — it’s probably because they’ve already had a few slices.”

Handler decided to write his 13 observations after realizing that parents were taking their children to the protests, while others couldn’t make it out.

My personal favorite Snicket reference is:

“Historically, a story about people inside impressive buildings ignoring or even taunting people standing outside shouting at them turns out to be a story with an unhappy ending.”

MTV2 show Wonder Showzen has even tackled the Occupy Wall Street issue using kids, albeit with very different motives and geared towards adults, even before the movement began a young reporter walked around Wall Street asking men in suits “Who did you exploit today?”

In another case the Washington Post tells the story of a lady who took her six-year-old to the protest and asked people to explain to her small child what they were standing up against.

As Occupy Wall Street continues to expand into international markets it’s important that children understand how the environment around them is changing, in the meantime I could really use a piece of cake about now.

What do you think about children becoming educated about the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Protesters for the Occupy Wall Street movement aren’t going in alone, the group has raised more than $230,000 in donations while amassing a warehouse full of supplies that range from tampons and toothbrushes to peanut butter and soups.

According to the New York Post the group is receiving 100-400 packages a day at at their tiny UPS mailbox and those packages including money orders and supplies. The organization is also receiving thousands of dollars in online donations from potential protesters who haven’t made their way to New York City or other Occupy locations.

Protesters have also been passing around a plastic bag throughout Zuccoti Park (where a tent city for protesters has been erected) which has been raising $1,000 a day for the cause.

Behind the groups financing is a 21-year-old CFO who spends his time as an art student, however the group meets each day with a “general assembly” which votes on expenses. For example a $2,250 charge for MetroCard swipes so protesters could get to Times square while the group accepted $500 in charges to make giant protest puppets including a Wall Street bull.

Among the groups supporters are Michael Moore who donated $1,000 and hip-hop legend Russell Simmons. Oddly enough the Simmons donation way declined by the group but they did not provide reasoning behind their decision.

Are you surprised that so many people from all walks of life are donating money and supplies to the Occupy Wall Street cause?

It is a movement that is slowly moving not only across the country but also moving north of the border to Canada and as a result many famous actors and musicians are turning up on the front lines of the OccupyWallStreeet protests. While the reaction to people like Susan Sarandon and Mark Ruffalo has been fairly even from both the pro and con camps Kanye West found himself facing some fairly quick negative reactions.

It is this type of thing, and the constantly fluid public opinion surround the whole OccupyWallStreet movement that is causing many of the managers and PR people employed by stars to recommend that the stars take it really slowly and try to keep as low a profile as possible.

Part of the reason for this suggested course of action is that studies have found that Americans are swift to react and especially in the case of conservatives avoid going to films starring actors whose politics they disagree with.

On the flip side are groups like Artists for Amnesty who believe that it is important for stars to get involved and that if given a chance to become involved they should take it, and what more important cause can there be than reacting to the anger and frustration over what is perceived as excessive greed by financial institutions and corporations.

However as much as we might see people like Michael Moore, Tim Robbins, Russell Simmons, Rosanne Barr, and Danny Glover willing to speak out in support Mark Ruffalo believes that there are an even larger number of famous people who support the OccupyWallStreet movement but keep silent for fear of losing work.

Nearly 100 Occupy Boston protesters were arrested in the early morning hours of Tuesday when police began dispersing a second tent city that popped up on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, across the screet from the first tent city.

Police descended on the area where they met a line of American flag carrying veterans who tried to stand in the way of police and protesters. Officers wrestled each veteran to the ground, cable-tied them and dragged them away.

In a video shot on the scene (shown below), one protester can be heard screaming “We are veterans of the United States of America!”

Attempting to throw city friendly rhetoric into the mix Police Commissioner Ed David told WCVB 5:

“During the day a group of anarchists really started to run the protest,” while adding, “They weren’t listening to us.”

City officials say they wanted to clear the Greenway camp because a conservancy group recently planted $150,000 worth of new shrubbery in the park.

City officials say protesters were warned hours in advance to vacate the premise and were even handed written instructions to leave.

In the meantime Mayor Thomas Menino has given the nearly 1,000 protesters the option to stay at the original camp.

Here’s the video of American Veteran’s being hauled away by police:

The idea that the veteran’s were running the protest with anarchist intentions has been shot down by various onlookers who observed peaceful protesting.

Do you think police should have arrested the veterans the way they did or simply allowed them to express their first amendment rights?

The 99% are growing louder. Wednesday saw numbers at the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protests grow to their largest numbers yet, after local unions pledged support for the goals of protestors.

The demonstrations against income inequality, corporate greed, corruption and several other social ills are now in their third week.

While the protestors remain leaderless and their aims are scattered, there is no doubt that momentum is being gained. Protestors yesterday trekked from lower Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park to Foley Square near City Hall, the crowd reportedly stretching across a dozen city blocks.

The fresh endorsement of several unions saw thousands join the protesters’ street theater on Wednesday, according to labor leaders. The Amalgamated Transit Union is one such union. It boasts 20,000 members in the New York area, and international president Larry Hanley had this to say to CNN:

“It’s really simple. These young people on Wall Street are giving voice to many of the problems that working people in America have been confronting over the last several years. These young people are speaking for the vast majority of Americans who are frustrated by the bankers and brokers who have profited on the backs of hard-working people. While we battle it out day after day, month after month, the millionaires and billionaires on Wall Street sit by – untouched – and lecture us on the level of our sacrifice.”

Other unions have suggested that they and the Wall Street protestors have shared aims. According to Transport Workers Union Local 100 spokesman Jim Gannon:

“Their goals are our goals. They brought a spotlight on issues that we’ve believed in for quite some time now. Wall Street caused the implosion in the first place and is getting away scot-free while workers, transit workers, everybody, is forced to pay for their excesses.”

Due to the somewhat amorphous structure and movement of the protests, tracking the numbers involved is difficult, but there is little doubt Wednesday saw the biggest body of protestors to date.

Meanwhile, following a string of arrests, protestors are pursuing a class action lawsuit against the New York Police Department and Mayor Michael Bloomberg for their “unconstitutional effort to disrupt and suppress” demonstrations.

The lawsuits follow a September 24 pepper spray incident (video below) involving apparently innocent, non-violent protestors and police officer NYPD Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna.

The Occupy Wall Street protests are going into their third week, as demonstrations spread to cities like Boston, Melbourne, Montreal and Prague.

Today, one of the demonstration’s designated spokespeople, Patrick Bruner, urged protestors to dress as zombies and engage in some banker mockery as protests stretch into day 16. A directive regarding the zombie initiative indicated:

Everyone come dressed as a corporate zombie! This means jacket and tie if possible, white face, fake blood, eating monopoly money, and doing a slow march, so when people come to work on Monday in this neighborhood they see us reflecting the metaphor of their actions. Tell your friends, Facebook it, Twitter it, and it can be MJ Thriller-style too! Create a different image than police brutality!

(Someone should really send those people some gold coins, at least.) Gawker points out that the zombie thing might be a bit casual for a protest with some serious goals, and suggested an opposite tactic:

You guys should all put on spotless tailored suits, slick back your hair, and march around Zuccotti Park in neat rows, shouting into cell phones about your investments. That would make a statement, and also shut up all the ”dirty stinky hippie”-haters, at least for a day or so.

The protests have been gaining traction as they wear on, with some high profile names lending support and visiting the site of the demonstrations. Susan Sarandon, Michael Moore, Dr. Cornell West and Russell Simmons have all visited, and on his Twitter account, Alec Baldwin tweeted the video of the protesters getting maced- calling the clip “unsettling” and adding that the NYPD has a “PR problem.” Van Jones also appeared on Real Time With Bill Maher last week, saying he was “so proud” of the young people standing up to be heard.

Reports about the size of crowds and the stamina of protesters at Wall Street in New York City vary, but several videos from the “Occupy Wall Street” protests have gone viral and some protesters allege that an overzealous NYPD has been forcefully restraining and even macing peaceful protesters.

Ten days in (the Wall Street protests began September 17th) it seems the movement is gaining steam rather than petering out, with 80 arrests made over the weekend by the NYPD at the site of the demonstrations in downtown Manhattan. 25-year-old Chelsea Elliott is one of the women in the video who is visibly corralled behind orange netting- a crowd control practice known as “kettling”- before, she says, police used mace or pepper spray on the women (who do not appear to be violent), causing them to shriek in pain. Elliott spoke to the New York Times about the incident, video of which has spread violently:

“Out of all the people they chose to spray, it was just me and three other girls,” she said Sunday in a telephone interview. “I’m not pushing against anybody, or trying to escape.”

Elliott adds:

“A cop in a white shirt — I think he’s a superior officer — just comes along and does these quick little spritzes of pepper spray in my and these three other girls’ eyes.”

NYPD spokesman Paul J. Browne says that the pepper spray was used correctly, and only after protesters tried to prevent the barrier from going up- something Browne says was deliberately left out of the clip:

“Pepper spray was used once,” he added, “after individuals confronted officers and tried to prevent them from deploying a mesh barrier — something that was edited out or otherwise not captured in the video.”

Of the protesters arrested over the weekend, most are expected to be released from jail today.

With the “Arab Spring” protests of the past year or two serving as inspiration, Twitter and Facebook have been used to organize a large group of protestors on Wall Street and an “occupation” of Wall Street is currently underway.

Twitter is currently also being used as a platform for non-attendees to weigh in on the controversy, with a steady stream of “for” and “against” tweets either lauding the efforts or dismissing protesters as about to get bored and seek a Starbucks on their iPhones or “burn daddy’s money.” Web activist groups and collectives including The Other 98% (an organization lobbying for corporate and top 2% tax reforms and the like) and the formidable Anonymous have been linked with the protests- more of which are occurring in satellite locations.

One circulated statement urging participation said:

“On the 17th of September, we want to see 20,000 people to flood into lower Manhattan, set up beds, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months. Like our brothers and sisters in Egypt, Greece, Spain, and Iceland, we plan to use the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic of mass occupation to restore democracy in America. We also encourage the use of nonviolence to achieve our ends and maximize the safety of all participants.”

Currently, #takewallstreet has overtaken #occupywallst as a trending topic on the microblogging service and even celebrities are getting in on the fray. Roseanne Barr has tweeted on her feed, @therealroseanne, and rapper Lupe Fiasco posted:

If anybody needs me I’ll be on Wall St: <s>#</s>iwilloccupy<s>#</s>occupywallstreet<s>@</s>OccupyWallSt<s>@</s>OccupyWallStNYC

Total headcount estimates for the event have not been attempted yet. The protest’s official site is located here.

It’s hard to pin down truths from fiction in Syria at the moment, however the countries state run TV is now claiming that “armed gangs” have killed at least 120 police and security officers in the northwest town of Jisr al-Shughour.

According to the reports, at least 82 of those attacks occurred at one security post. The report has not been verified by independent sources and the number jumped quickly throughout the day according to the New York Times.

The reports of attacks arrive after it was believed that Syrian officials used helicopter gunships and armored cars to fight against the opposition, killing 25 people.

According to state-run TV residents were “pleading” for the military to intervene while opposition activists spoke out against those reports with one person stating: ”I have seen no evidence of organized violence by protesters” and “Protesters do not have weapons they could even use against tanks and helicopters.”

If you somehow missed it, there’s been a bit of a debate in the US lately over whether burning the Koran is an acceptable method of protest.

Some d-bag in Florida tried to organize a rally to burn Korans, but he really just wanted the President to call him and tell him to please not do that. That particular spectacle sadly wasn’t the only one of its ilk in the days surrounding the 9th anniversary of September 11th, and one group of supposed Christians gathered in a Texas park last weekend with plans to publicly burn some Korans. Luckily for those who find that offensive, a shirtless skateboarder stepped in to save the day:

…Jacob Isom, the shirtless dude clutching his skateboard in the picture above, swooped in.

“I snuck up behind him and took his Koran,” Isom chuckles in the news report below. “He said something about burning the Koran. I was like, ‘Dude, you HAVE no Koran,’ and I took off.’”

Isom later gave the rescued Koran to a grateful but unidentified leader of an Amarillo Muslim congregation, who in the picture above clutches the book in one hand and Isom in the other.

Video below (XKCD shirt at 0:29!)

Popular geolocation and social networking app Foursquare has been blocked in China, and speculation for the reason centers around governmental censorship of buzz about the 21st anniversary of the country’s Tiananmen Square massacre.

Foursquare co-founders Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai confirmed the block to CNET, but said they didn’t know if the action was a permanent restriction of access to the service in China or just until hype dies down surrounding the Tiananmen check-ins:

“There were a lot of people checking into Tiananmen Square and posting tips/protest messages to the venue,” Selvadurai told CNET via e-mail, speculating that this is what led Chinese authorities to block Foursquare’s servers and IP addresses on both the Web and its various mobile apps. He said that Foursquare is not yet sure how this has been done or precisely what geographic region is covered.

This isn’t the first time China has censored social networking applications during a controversial or sensitive event. In 2008, iTunes was briefly banhammered for protest music circulating during the Olympics. Occasional bans of Facebook and Twitter have been known to happen as well.

[CNET, Telegraph]
