Regular Exercise May Lower Risk Of Having Heavy Babies

Miami, FL (AHN) – Women who exercise regularly during pregnancy are significantly less likely to give birth to a child with excessive birth weight.

Norwegian researchers said in a new study that women who exercise regularly while they are pregnant are up to 28 percent less likely to have an excessively heavy child at birth.

The researchers studied 36,869 pregnant women who completed two questionnaires about exercise. They found that excessive birth weight, which is described as weight above the 90th percentile, was observed in 4,033 newborns. More than half of those pregnancies were by women giving birth to twins.

Women in the study who gave birth to children below 8.8 pounds said in the questionnaires that they worked out about three times a week.

The study is published in the Oct. 2009 journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.

The pregnant 30-year-old reality TV star – who is expecting her first

child with partner Scott Disick – admits her hormones are affecting

her temperament but she is doing her best to try not to be rude to

those close to her.

She said: “Scott keeps getting scared. But he’s been great with my

mood swings so far. He’s like, ‘Just take a deep breath.’ He heard

that with the last three months of a pregnancy you have really extreme

mood swings so he was joking, ‘Oh, you’re not going to believe the

mood swings!’ ”

It’s not just Scott who has been getting the sharp end of Kourtney’s

tongue, her family – including sisters Kim and Khloe and mother Kris –

have also been suffering.

Kourtney explained to People magazine: “If I’m just trying to pick a

fight with someone and if I’m around Scott or my mom, then they’ll

probably get it worst. If someone is annoying me – usually my mom –

I’ll call Khloe and it’ll make me feel better because she’ll agree

with me.”

Kourtney has previously admitted the pregnancy has changed her

personality, revealing she can’t help picking on Scott.

She said: “I throw b***h fits. The other day, I was like, ‘This house

is such a mess! Now that Scott’s living in my house, there’s stuff

everywhere! We need to get it organised!’ Everything I had to do, I

blamed it on Scott.”

Kourtney is due to give birth in December, and does not yet know the

sex of the baby.

She initially wasn’t sure if she wanted to be told the gender, but is

now looking forward to finding out.

The star said: “I’m starting to get presents from people, and really,

how many yellow outfits do I need?”

Chicken skin remains as a contraception myth

In a recent survey of 1,000 women aged 18 to 50 in England researchers found that some of the silliest myths about female contraception still remains. While ancient methods of crocodile dung and honey before sex competed with sea sponges and beeswax after sex modern day variations can appear just as strange.

When if comes to alternate barrier methods one if five women had heard of common kitchen items such as bread, cling film (Saran Wrap) and chicken skins being used. As far as oral contraceptives it seems that Coca-cola, kebabs and potato chips were high on the list.

Other myths surround the use of oral contraceptive pills. One in 10 of the women questioned believed that it always takes a number of years to regain fertility after discontinuation of the pill. Others believed that the pill could protect them against HIV.

Professor Steve Field, Chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners, commented: "This is alarming but not surprising.

Study: Home Birth As Safe As Hospital Birth

Vancouver, British Columbia (AHN) – A new study comparing planned home and hospital births showed that there is not much difference between the two methods in terms of safety. However, the study – which looked into 13,000 births among British Columbian women – likely deepened more the gap between pro-home and pro-hospital birth advocates.

The study, which came out in the Canadian Medical Association Journal last week, covered planned home births attended by registered midwives and planned hospital births which took place from January 2000 to December 2004.

It found out that perinatal death per 1,000 births was only 0.35 percent in planned home births and 0.57 percent among hospital births attended by a midwife and 0.64 percent if attended by a doctor.

The study also found out that infants born at home were less likely to need obstetric interventions such as electronic fetal monitoring, assisted vaginal delivery or adverse maternal outcomes. They were likewise less prone to require resuscitation upon delivery, oxygen therapy beyond 24 hours and less likely to need meconium aspiration compared to babies born in hospitals.

The study, though, far settles the debate.

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada took a neutral stand and encouraged more research into the safety of both home and hospital deliveries. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, which is in favor of hospital births, said home births “places the process of giving birth ahead of the goal of having a healthy baby.” On the opposite end, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in the U.K. favors home births for uncomplicated pregnancies.

The study was led by Dr.Patricia Jannsen, an associate professor at University of British Columbia’s School of Population and Public Health.

Spencer to Heidi: if you get knocked up you can GTFO

Reality TV douchenozzle Spencer Pratt told press that if wife Heidi gets pregnant, it’s all over. The 26-year-old star feels that he’s too immature to reproduce, and even seemed to address his missus’ veiled threat to get knocked up “accidentally” in the meantime. Heidi said:

“I think I’m ready… I think I was born ready. I’m very maternal. I’m very loving. I would be the best mom ever. [Spencer doesn't feel] quite the same, but maybe he just doesn’t know he wants kids yet. I think he never wants kids, but maybe I’ll have a surprise for him.”

Hmm… Heidi, for someone who’s so Christ-y, that doesn’t seem like a very Christian thing to do in your marriage. But Spencer won’t be falling for that babydaddy stuff. Regardless of what he promised in front of God and their families, if Heidi gets pregnant, she gets kicked to the curb. Spencer explains:

“What happens if she does? I told her there’s a divorce or adoption… If she’s not down with the adoption, I think it’s divorce.”

“Heidi is, like, trying to have a baby like it’s going to buy a new pair of Louis Vuittons. She’s really ready to start this family. She’s not playing. And that’s what I’m saying — you can’t sneak a baby.”

I think many people would agree that there’s probably not any point in our lifetimes where the world will “want,” as he refers to the possibility, a “Spencer Pratt spawn.” Still and all, even a vapid, vacillating irritant like Heidi doesn’t warrant that kind of treatment publicly.

Tunisian woman set to out-spawn Octomom, by four

A woman in Tunisia is said to be poised to steal Octomom Nadya Suleman’s limelight, by giving birth to twelve babies.

The woman allegedly conceived the freakish number of fetuses via fertility treatments after suffering several miscarriages. According to the Sun, British “fertility experts” have confirmed the strange story, but have said the pregnancy carries “colossal risks.” Reports indicate the woman is “feeling fine” and in “good health,” but she is being continually monitored by medical personnel.

The clearly out-of-touch with reality dad-to-be was quoted as saying:

“In the beginning, we thought that my wife would give birth to twins, but more foetuses were discovered. Our joy increased with the growing number.”

He even seemed to be under the impression the delivery could occur naturally. And the pregnancy has a very slim chance of a completely positive outcome. Fox News’ “consulting medical expert” Dr. Manny Alvarez had this to say:

“When you get to a pregnancy with that many multiples, often some of them spontaneously die,” Alvarez said. “Anything more than five babies becomes a very high-risk pregnancy.”

If the woman does succeed in carrying a majority of the babies to term, Alvarez said she will need constant monitoring, and will more than likely need to be hospitilized.

“The rates of premature labor for multiples are astronomical,” he added.

Mariah Carey Is Probably Pregnant

Mariah Carey’s fueling pregnancy rumors with her recent visit to the ob-gyn, complete with a suspicious slip of paper. It turns out that last year when Minnie Driver was pregnant, she was seen carrying an identical paper from the same doctor’s office, and now Page Six is on the “L.A. Paper Trail.”

An observer told Richard Johnson that Mariah left the North Crescent Boulevard location “clutching what looked like a sonogram and being greeted by her entourage with cheers. She was ebullient.”

Even the rep sounded unsure this time, commenting that “As far as I’m told it’s not true.” (Emphasis mine.) See? Even the rep didn’t really know– Mariah is way too coy to reveal the news yet. Stay tuned!

If This is “Fat,” We Have a Big Problem

Eva Longoria shot out at pregnancy rumors recently in OK!, saying “I’m not pregnant. I’m just fat. I gained 5lb over the summer so instead of a size zero, I’m a size one.”

Wow. Bringing numbers into that one doesn’t prove much of a point, considering a good deal of women will be cringing when they see sizes “0″ and “1″ anywhere near the word “fat.”

Don’t worry. She’s barely over 5 feet tall, so her size 1 is our size 8 (or something like that). Repeat after me: it’s all relative.

Jennifer Garner’s pregnant again. Can we stand another bumpwatch? The Angelina one totally took the wind out of my sails. Regardless of whether or not this one will be as fun / drama-filled; it’s here– Jennifer’s co-star Victor Garber confirmed the pregnancy to US mag, saying “Yes, she is.” A source added that “She is five months pregnant. They are very happy.”

Do you think Jennifer’s pissed about the news getting leaked? She’s already five months along, so keeping it under wraps much longer wouldn’t have worked anyway.
