Sweetest Game Deal? Playstation 3 With Plenty Of Icing

Okay so it technically isn’t really a gaming console, but the Playstation 3 cake is the perfect snack in between those 24 hour gaming binges.

The actual console is your typical cake shaped to look like the PS3, with black icing and hand sketched logos and wording.

The controllers are then made of rice crispy squares which have been carefully crafted to exactly resemble PS3 controllers, while they’re also colored to match the controllers black look with colored buttons.

For the health conscience perhaps the creator would be willing to make a PS3 Slim. [via TechEBlog]

FIFA 10 UK cover revealed – Get the details here

Today EA Sports revealed the front cover for the UK version of their very popular soccer video game FIFA 10. Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney returns for the fifth time on the UK cover.

Flanking Wayne Rooney is cover debutant and Arsenal striker Theo Walcott and Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard. Lampard previously featured on the UK cover for 2006 FIFA World Cup.

So whats new in FIFA 10?

There are over 50 new improvements in the manager mode alone and several in the game mode. Let me highlight a few for you:

360° Dribbling—The first-ever true 360° dribbling system in a football game provides finer dribbling control, enabling players to find spaces between defenders that previously were not possible.
Improved Trapping Intelligence —Players now have a better awareness of where the easiest, most natural trapping position is so they can get the ball on the ground and under control easier and earlier.
Advanced Positioning —Defenders multi-task and play the pitch more intelligently by covering dangerous spaces left by out-of-position teammates. In attack, players analyze space more effectively, curve their runs to stay onside, create passing lanes and vary attacking options.
Refined Goalkeeper Intelligence — numerous improvements mean that goalkeepers now have more urgency and better perception of where to intercept loose balls, resulting in a more responsive and powerful rushing system. New animation warping technology provides game-realistic goalkeeper positioning and momentum, resulting in more varied scoring opportunities.
Manager Mode Authenticity—More than 50 major improvements were designed to create an authentic experience to mimic the real-world game. Match results are based on team and player strengths and weaknesses. Player transfers are determined by multiple decision points, including club finance and prestige, availability of similar players, and competition from AI-controlled clubs. Player development is more realistic with true-to-life growth curves based on factors such as age and environment.

FIFA 10 is released October 2, 2009 on Nintendo Wii, Playstation 2 & 3, Xbox 360, PC and Nintendo DS.

… because Sony has revealed that manufacturing costs for its console have dropped by 70 per cent. Can you say “price cut”? Here’s Sony Corp CEO and executive vee-pee Nobuyuki Oneda:

“The cost reduction since we introduced the PS3 is very substantial and this is on schedule. We don’t disclose how much of the PlayStation 3, specifically the cost deduction, was achieved during the past two years. But that is on schedule. [The deduction] is about 70 per cent, roughly speaking.”

Fortunately for Baldrick-esque simpletons like me, GamesIndustry.biz did the math on this, and guessed that this drop meant Sony was now building the things for quite a bit less than the retail price:

“In January 2008, reports indicated that manufacturing costs had been reduced by 50 per cent to around $400 (£243). A further 70 per cent drop on this figure would suggest costs now sit at around $240 (£146) per unit.”

So what does all this mean for you and I, the bewildered consumer? Well, although we’ve yet to see much of the savings from reduced manufacturing costs passed on to customers, we can probably confidently speculate that a price snip is just around the corner for the hardware. Hell, as the priciest home console out there, it’s certainly due one.

Wonder if they removed the grill feature to cut costs?

Hulu for PS3: Denied

Sometime this weekend, Playstation 3 owners began reporting inability to access Hulu through the device, and receiving the above message. Hulu was kind of all huhwha? about the whole thing, but Engadget reports that Hulu terms of service were updated on June 26th. While it was initially speculated the issues could be connected to a recent firmware update, altering a browser’s user-string that way indicates the PS3 was specifically blocked by Hulu.

But why, Hulu? Why you gotta be like that?

Way back in March, Hulu blocked the hell out of Boxee, citing consumer convenience bitching content providers. Since then, it’s been an on/off thing, spawning this Twitter feed:

While Hulu can’t bite the content-providing hand that feeds it, it’s extremely counterintuitive to provide such a service just to add arbitrary blocks making it inconvenient to use. And as Hulu hasn’t given a reason for the new lockdown, we can only speculate as to why the PS3 was selected for this round of “no content for you!”

IT World presents two theories on the matter. Theory #1- quit bringing the content to your TVs, damnit! If you’re gonna watch Hulu, it’s gonna be on your smudgy little laptop screen or not at all! (Because no one can hook computers up to TVs, that’s just crazytalk?) Theory #2- Hulu’s coming to the XBox 360, and Microsoft paid Hulu to cut off competition.

Whatever the reason is behind this latest round of early-adopter jerking-around, it’s just another example of short-sightedness regarding a changing marketplace. The same consumers that use services like Hulu are likely the ones who are already aware of how to implement a work around, like PlayOn. So they’re not really stopping anything, just pissing everyone off.

Are Independent Studios The Future of Gaming?

Thanks to the muscle of the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and to some extent even the Wii, games have been about who could do the most. Most enemies on-screen, most polygons for character models, most advanced AI, most advanced physics. While not totally the case with the Wii, games are really in a bit of a rut. How many times will people buy the same Madden each year? As much as titles like Gears of War may be popular, there will always be a place for truly innovative, good and different games. Games like Katamari Damacy, Shadow of the Colossus, Rez and Ico have been cult favourites for good reason – going against the traditional grain.

The recent resurgence of old-school titles such as the Bionic Commando remake as well as the popularity of 2-D titles thanks to the Wii Virtual console and XBLA are proof that people like a bit of nostalgia as well as innovation. Why else would I enjoy some Metal Gear Solid 4 and still love playing Metal Slug?

Enter: Fez, a new 2-D/3-D game brought to my attention from the Independent Games Festival where it won Excellence in Visual Art. Looking at the video, the game looks like a total trip. The idea of changing perspective to enter a door, or to make two far apart platforms close enough to access is interesting and innovative, though comments over at Kotaku claim Sega’s Crush for the PSP and Paper Mario are similar.

Even still, it’s great to see small teams of people doing games like Fez and Gish that get people excited over their simplicity yet complexity at the same time. While Fez isn’t out yet I’m actually quite excited to get my hands on it. No word on a release date or price, so keep your eyes on the website if you’re interested. As with movies, certain concepts just may not get out the door with the bigger companies and may take the success of a small company willing to take a risk to really catch the attention of the bigger guys. So, are independent studios the future of gaming?
