One of the big drums that the high muckie-mucks of the blogging world is the idea of having your content in as many places as humanly possible. Some new service opens up that let’s you pipe in an RSS feed and we all line up like good little bloggers and shove our content in the face of readers who have probably already seen it in ten other places in the last five minutes.

However the only saving grace to this was that setting up this increasingly irritating publish stream was that we’re .. well .. human. As such we find it difficult to keep up with all those new places opening up all the time, sort of a plague of dandelions we go around killing off every spring.

Not anymore folks.

As we find out via our Mr. Social Everything Louis Gray a whole new avenue has opened up for those of us blog publishers who delight in flooding the Web with yet another place to find our content.

Yes folks the recently acquired Seesmic property Ping.FM in conjunction with Superfeedr will now take your blog(s) RSS feed and pump it out to every service that Ping.FM supports; which at this point comes in at 22 services.

As I said to Holden Page on Buzz when he said that he was going to try the service out – nothing like turning your blog into the equivalent of a flyer .. and we all know what people do with flyers.

I can understand why there is this seeming need to make sure we get our content out in as many places as possible after all there’s a lot of noise out there to try and be heard over. However at what point do we start experiencing the law of diminishing returns?

At what point do people start getting tired of seeing the same damn headline or complete post over and over again?

This is especially a concern in my opinion for the small independent bloggers. It is one thing for the big blogs like Mashable and others of its ilk who just have to post any old thing and see hundreds and hundreds of retweets or shares. For smaller bloggers though I believe one has to be careful in jumping at every so-called opportunity to shove our content in people’s faces.

Big blogs can afford to lose a reader here and there when the readers have had enough with the over promotion. Small blogs on the other hand aren’t so lucky as every reader we get is important and we need to really remember that.

When Seesmic first started out so many Internet years ago it was a video version of Twitter and Facebook. Loic LeMeur believed back then that there would be a market for a video based social network the problem is that it wasn’t too long before he realized that wasn’t going to be his road to fame and money.

Sure the future was being involved in the social media world somehow just not using video. At that point the first purchase of a Twitter related business happened when Loic snapped up Twhirl. From that point it has been a slow and steady climb up the ranks of Twitter; and social media, clients. Twhirl was rebranded as Seesmic Desktop and the march was started.

With today’s announcement of Seesmic’s purchase of Ping.fm the once lonely Twitter client is headed to being an all encompassing Social Media client especially once Ping.fm is integrated. As noted by Louis Gray in his post about the purchase Seesmic this is just another move in trying to cover all of Social Media rather than concentrating on just one service.

Today, Seesmic, the well-known microblogging client, which to date has focused on Twitter and Facebook, acquired the service, extending the product’s reach. In combination with Seesmic’s recent inroads to a native Windows client and an Android application, alongside their Web interface and AIR application, the service looks to become ubiquitous, updating any site from anywhere.

While there is always the danger of user interface overload as more services are supported it is a smart move as people are increasingly using a wide variety of social media services. So rather than having to run a multitude of clients, desktop and/or web-based, Seesmic is providing a one-stop shop in an effort to blend all the social media services into one platform.

If you’ve not heard of Ping.fm before but are suffering from social/ microblogging service overkill, Ping.fm is a service for you. The closed beta service has been around for some time, but I only got my hands on an invite recently, and my only gripe: why didn’t someone get me onto this earlier!

Ping.fm is a multiple platform updater. The service allows you to send updates to multiple services from the one point. For example, I can use Ping.fm to update Identi.ca, Plurk, Pownce and Twitter from the one interface, with one message, and one click delivery. I’ve named four services, but that isn’t even half of them. The full list: Bebo, Blogger, Brightkite, Facebook, FriendFeed, hi5, Identi.ca, Jaiku, LinkedIn, LiveJournal, Mashable, MySpace, Plaxo Pulse, Plurk, Pownce, Tumblr, Twitter, Xanga.

Users pick the services they want included in Ping.fm, and then via simple operators can also be selective when sending out messages. For example, if you don’t want a message going to every service, you can start with @s for a status update, or @m for a microblog.

So far I’ve only set it up to go out for status messages to Twitter like services and social networking sites, but notably I’ve not included Twitter so far because I don’t usually post “heading out for some food” type messages to Twitter. As a user though, you get to pick or choose to suit your preferred mix.

Ping.fm comes with an iPhone and mobile version, and each user is given a unique email address if they’d prefer to update via email (and this has been my preferred outlet when mobile so far).

As a service I’m lumping it in the Aggregation 1.5 mix. Although it doesn’t aggregate data in, it does push it out, so in one way it’s the opposite of FriendFeed (although FriendFeed does support posting to Twitter). Ping.fm + FriendFeed though together is the ultimate goal in this space, a service that aggregates all incoming information and allows data to be pushed out again. What ever it is, I love it. I can now update multiple services from the one place, so I don’t have to remember to log in and regularly use every service out there.

I’m not sure how many users this is good for, or for how long, but use the code “pingyoulater” to sign up to Ping.fm. It’s a service many of us have been waiting for.
