Zombie Polaroid back from the dead

Luddites, hipsters and ironic techie types rejoice: Polaroid isn’t dead after all!

The brand went the way of betamax on February 8th, 2008, and fans have been making do with remaining stock, memories and Polaroid emulators. Production stopped for good in June of 2008, but all the while, a group called “The Impossible Project” has been toiling to bring the insta-film back to market. Not even the Polaroid film of your youth- a better version, with yet-to-be disclosed concessions for digital types and “optimized” features. The news came not a moment too soon- the last batch of existing film expired on October 9th.

Licensee Summit Global Group, partnered with The Impossible Project, plans to revive Polaroid products including 600 Color Instant Film, the One-Step and the i-Zone in 2010. The Impossible Project released the following statement on their website:

As we have created quite some buzz about Analog Instant Photography over the past 12 months, the Polaroid licensee – The Summit Global Group – now can’t resist any longer and announced at a press conference on October 13th in Hongkong that they will re-launch some of the most famous Polaroid Instant Cameras.

Therefore they are commissioning The Impossible Project to develop and produce a limited edition of Polaroid branded Instant Films in the middle of 2010.

The Impossible Project is proud and excited that its ambitions and all the relentless work that has already been invested are now becoming the foundation for Polaroid’s comeback as a producer of Instant Cameras.

Large-scale production and worldwide sale of The Impossible Project’s new integral film materials under its own brand will already start in the beginning of 2010 – with a brand new and astonishing black and white Instant Film and the first colour films to follow in the course of the year.

Face.com follows Photo Finder with Photo Tagger for Facebook

Back in May, we told you about Face.com’s Photo Finder, a facial recognition app for Facebook that aims to find tags for untagged photos floating about in your network.

Photo Finder has racked up some impressive stats since it launched, scanning over a billion faces and facilitating the tagging of over 400 million of those photos. (Point of reference for my fellow New Yorkers- that’s like tagging an entire rush hour 6 train full of people!) Here’s the stat breakdown, from Face.com’s blog:

13 Million photos scanned a day.
550 Thousand an hour.
9 Thousand a minute.
150 per second.

On average, a Photo Finder user uploads 300 pics and has around 10,000 in their network, 2/3s of which are untagged or partially tagged. Enter Photo Tagger. Photo Tagger was conceived to allow users to power-tag these untagged pics. It scans your albums or your friends’ albums, batches your peeps into groups and suggests tags for them. All you have to do is confirm the tags and the app pushes them out to Facebook.

Photo Tagger is currently in closed alpha, but it sounds like a handy little tool for making photo sharing more efficient. Check out the screencaps below to see the tagging process in action.

The new “ghost towns”

Far from the kind that bring madcap Brady Bunch adventures, the NY Times recently commissioned a series on “the ruins of the second gilded age.”

Since the real estate market began tanking in the US, tales of modern “ghost towns” have buzzed through the media intermittently. Subdivisions and McMansions lay abandoned and often unfinished, a sadly silent illustration of a country full of homes no one can afford to live in.

Portuguese born photographer Edgar Martins said in the piece:

“The sudden shift in the economy unmasked such excess. People are present in these images, but not physically. You trace their action, the destruction they left behind.”

Face.com out of Alpha with their Facebook app called Photo finder

The driving force behind Face.com, a company based in Israel and New York, has been to develop the best in class facial recognition software. In keeping with this the company has just released a Facebook app called Photo Finder. The idea behind the app is to let you scan all the photos on you network in Facebook finding photos of yourself and your friends and then tag them.

During the closed alpha of a few thousand people Photo Finder was able to scan 400 million photos and identify over 700 thousand people/faces.

The app works by scanning the public photos in your Facebook networks and suggest tags for those that are either partially tagged or not tagged at all. Face.com says it is the fastest, most powerful and most accurate facial recognition app available making it the best way to find photos of yourself and your friends that you may not have known even existed.

Kanye West whines about the paps on his blog

There is nothing we love more than a celebrity who blogs. Kanye West has put a rant up on his blog about the paparazzi and his recent arrest. You can tell he wrote it because its all in caps and says things that even a PR rep wouldn’t try to get away with, stuff like, I am not a celebrity, I am a regular guy who happens to be famous.

According to Kanye the paparazzi are delivering him a world of darkness, apparently his photos are only worth $1,000 each.

REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH LIGHT I PUT OUT, THERE ARE PEOPLE WORKING JUST AS HARD TO ONLY DELIVER DARKNESS. IF YOU LISTEN TO MY MUSIC, HOW COULD I DELIVER SO MANY POSITIVE UPLIFTING MESSAGES AND BE THE MONSTER THAT THE MEDIA PAINTS. PAPARAZZI GIVE REAL PHOTOGRAPHERS A BAD NAME. A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS, THEIRS ARE WORTH A THOUSAND DOLLARS…

According to Kanye the paps killed Kenny Princess Diana and his recent arrest was just a publicity stunt.

I AM PROTECTING MY PERSONAL SPACE SINCE THERE ARE NO LAWS TO PROTECT THAT FOR ME.

I PUT MY HAND UP TO THE CAMERA IN SELF DEFENSE!

HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED…WHEN I LEFT THE CLUB, I WAS ENCOUNTERED BY A THIRSTY PAPARAZZI AS USUAL. HE FELT HE HAD MORE RIGHTS TO MY SPACE THAN ME, SO I PUT MY HAND UP TO PREVENT HIM FROM TAKING MY IMAGE. I DIDN’T ASSAULT HIM BUT MERELY PUTTING MY HAND UP TO COVER HIS LENS. MY SECURITY YELLED, “GET THE CAMERA OFF HIM.” I GUESS IN ALL THE COMMOTION THE CAMERA SCRAPED HIS NOSE.

THREE HOURS LATER I GET A KNOCK AT MY HOTEL DOOR. THERE WERE FIVE POLICE OFFICERS IN FRONT OF MY ROOM AND I HAD NO IDEA WHY. I HAD MY SECURITY GO SPEAK WITH THEM. THE COPS WERE VERY CORDIAL BUT TOLD ME THEY HAD TO ARREST ME BECAUSE A COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THAT WAS THE BOGUS PART. THEY PLACED ME IN HANDCUFFS AND DROVE ME TO THE STATION. THEY SPOKE ABOUT HOW THIS WAS OBVIOUSLY A PUBLICITY STUNT BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER BUT THEY STILL HAD TO GO THOUGH THE MOTIONS. WHEN I GOT BACK TO THE HOTEL THERE WERE PAPARAZZI HANGING OVER THE BRIDGE ABOVE THE HOTEL TRYING TO GET A SHOT OF ME GETTING OUT THE POLICE VAN. EVEN THOUGH I WASN’T CHARGED, THE DAMAGE WAS DONE. SURE ENOUGH THE NEXT MORNING, PLASTERED ACROSS EVERY MEDIA OUTLET… KANYE GETS ARRESTED. IT DIDN’T MATTER THAT I WASN’T CHARGED OR THE FACT THAT I HADN’T ASSAULTED ANYONE. ALL THAT MATTERED WAS THAT I WAS ARRESTED.

SIDEBAR, THEY QUOTED ME AS SAYING…”GET THE CAMERA OFF HIM!” LIKE I WAS TALKING IN THIRD PERSON. HE TRIED TO MAKE ME SOUND LIKE A CRAZY PERSON AND PEOPLE BELIEVED HIM. WHAT MERIT DOES THIS GUY HAVE THAT HE CAN SAY SOMETHING ABOUT ME AND PEOPLE TAKE IT AS LAW? THE FACT THAT HE COULD GET ME ARRESTED OFF A MERE COMPLAINT BUT I CAN’T ASK HIM TO STOP TAKING PICTURES OF ME IS VERY LOPSIDED.

WHO’S WINNING, ME OR THE MEDIA?

I’ll have a go at answering that Kanye. Its the media, you are famous, when you want to sell albums you suck up to the media in order to flog your wares. You trade on your image and the publicity in order to make money. We say suck it up.

Amy Winehouse: Train wreck, you know you have to look.

Amy Winehouse has done it again, running around Camden last night off her face on god knows what, and for the amusement/pity of the rest of us its all been caught by the paps.

The Mirror is reporting that Winehouse went on a rampage, screaming for her husband and banging on the door of her old flat, which is just 100 metres from her current home.

The photos are awful, she is wearing that same strange string vest top she was wearing the other day. I suppose with that on if she spills anything she can just be wiped down. Whilst she doesn’t look as emaciated as those photos which appeared before she stopped saying no to rehab, she needs to switch out the meth/crack/smack for a sandwich, stat.

Obviously yelling for her husband means she intends to hook up with Blake Fielder, now that he is out of the slammer. Can’t wait for those pictures.

One day, if she doesn’t die like next week, she is going to do a vanity google, see these pics and be mortified. Its a train wreck, you won’t be able to look away.

Ask.com Brings Search to Photobucket

Search engine Ask.com and photo and video-sharing site Photobucket have entered into a multi-year strategic agreement.

Through the pact, the Ask.com search box is now prominently displayed across Photobucket.com, driving millions of additional Ask.com search queries and exposing the Ask.com brand to Photobucket’s 44 million monthly unique users worldwide.

The agreement also includes the syndication of sponsored listings and display advertising to Photobucket.
