For the second time in as many years, a massive recall of a popular brand of peanut butter is underway due to fears of salmonella contamination.

The recall only affects two reduced-fat varieties of the nationally distributed product. Affected varieties, Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread and Skippy Reduced Fat Super Chunk Peanut Butter Spread, are sold in a 16.3 oz plastic jar and bear the UPC codes 048001006812 and 048001006782. No illnesses have been reported to date associated with the recall of Skippy Peanut Butter.

Peanut butter involved in the recall was sold in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin, and product has a “best-if-used-by-date” coded as MAY1612LR1, MAY1712LR1, MAY1812LR1, MAY1912LR1, MAY2012LR1 and MAY2112LR1.

The possible contamination was revealed during routine quality testing at Unilever. Salmonella poses a far greater health threat to the very young, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals, and presents with fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and occasionally, a larger systemic infection.

Special K Recall and More

This time, the products affected are Special K Protein Meal Bars, honey almond flavor. The bars come in six- and eight-count packages, have a “best if used before” date earlier than February 1, 2010, and have one of the following three UPC codes: 3800039778, 3800039935, or 3800039931.

The Keebler cookies involved are the Soft Batch Homestyle Chocolate Chunk Cookies and Oatmeal Raisin Cookies that comes in the 2.5-ounce size. The products will have a “best if used before” date earlier than June 30, 2009. They’ll have one of two UPC codes: 3010032708 or 3010037899.

Kellogg says the products don’t actually have peanut ingredients from the Peanut Corporation of America but were made on the same line as other products that may have had the tainted peanuts.

Kellogg is also expanding its recall of Austin and Keebler Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers and snack-sized packs of Famous Amos Peanut Butter Cookies and Keebler Soft Batch Homestyle Cookies. The recalls for those products now include all code dates and varieties.

Meanwhile, investigators are now moving toward a criminal probe into the Georgia plant believed to be responsible for a nationwide salmonella outbreak.

FDA Peanut Recall 2009: Affected Products

The products now falling within the FDA peanut recall include all peanut butter and other peanut-related items manufactured at the Blakely, Georgia Peanut Corporation of America plant since January 1, 2007. The list includes dozens of kinds of cookies, crackers, cereal, candy, and ice cream, as well as some types of pet food. Jars of peanut butter sold in grocery stores are still believed to be safe.

Below are links to the continually updated databases of products maintained by the Food and Drug Administration.

Peanut Butter Recall 2009: Call for Criminal Probe

Officials now believe the Georgia plant “knowingly [sold] tainted products” and even went as far as to seek out a testing lab that would provide misleading results so it could continue shipping in spite of its problems.

FDA inspectors say they discovered a dozen occasions where the plant found salmonella in its products, then took no measures to clean or eliminate the bacteria. The plant, inspectors believe, then sought out testing by alternate labs and received a clean result. Food safety experts say it’s not uncommon for a retest to miss something like salmonella, and that the detection of it within one test should have been more than enough to warrant action.

The FDA says knowingly shipping contaminated products is a violation of the law.
