The somewhat casual and oft-maligned vernacular of the internet has had a bit of an influence on the latest set of updates to the Oxford English Dictionary.

The “premiere dictionary of the English language” has added a slew of words typically associated with texting or chatting on the internet, ones often used in social media contexts like on Facebook or Twitter. “Heart” got a new officially application in the OED, as a verb denoted by the symbol “♥.” (As in, “I ♥ bubble tea.”) LOL was added as being “strongly associated with the language of electronic communications,” and defined as “laughing out loud,” beating earlier incarnations. (The term apparently used to mean “little old lady,” and has caused some confusion in standing in for “lots of love”- as in, “sorry your grandma died in a fiery plane crash, LOL.”)

“Muffin top” also made the cut, as well as “FYI,” a term generally associated with workplaces and dating back about seventy years from the first known use. Cries of “OMGZ” and “oh noes” are resonating round the internet as that chick who plays Hermione in the Harry Potter films has revealed that she recently lopped off her magical locks.

Emma Watson made the announcement in the way all major news is dispersed nowadays, tweeting to her fans and followers:

Yes, I cut my hair off a few days ago! I love it- feels incredible. Hope you like it! Photo on www.facebook.com/emmawatson

On Facebook, Watson commented further on her new pixie trim:

Dear all. Cut my hair off a few days ago… Feels incredible. I love it. I’ve wanted to do this for years and years; it’s the most liberating thing ever. Hope you like. Big love from Emma x

Watson indicated on her Facebook page that she was in New York as recently as Tuesday to promote the latest Harry Potter installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Have you been chomping at the bit for new episodes of HBO’s vampire hit True Blood?

There’s light at the end of the very long tunnel- HBO has finally released a premiere date for Season Three of the popular vampire drama. Season Two left things on a bit of a cliffhanger, with the ostensibly forcible disappearance of one of Sookie’s many supernatural suitors and a hanging marriage proposal. HBO announced the plans on True Blood‘s Facebook fan page (no teasers, though, much to everyone’s disappointment) and MTV had this to say about the widespread anticipation:

This is so exciting for oh-so-many reasons (you know, besides the fact that Alexander Skarsgard will finally return — naked — to our living rooms), but because we don’t have enough time or space to list them all, just know that this chapter of the show will flaunt a badass new werewolf (who comes complete with real wolves), a new boy toy for Lafayette, a new girl for boy toy Jason Stackhouse, an “erotic connection” between Sam and Bill and, last but not least, cameos by Godric!!

Although introduction of a date is definitely a positive development, we’ve still got almost three months to wait until the first episode of True Blood hit airwaves on June 13th, which is kind of a bummer.

Squeeeeeeee, New York City area fangirls!

Everybody’s current favorite boy-band is playing a free show tonight at Irving Plaza near Union Square in Manhattan. Putting area parents in a bind, the just-announced show starts at 9pm and doors open at 8pm.

Nick, Joe and Kevin’s new album “Lines, Vines and Trying Times” is set to drop on Tuesday, and the free show is just one of a whirlwind of stops in and around the Big Apple. The Brothers Jonas will appear on “Good Morning America” for everyone whose parents are like, OMG, so uncool.

I can’t even imagine what the doors will look like at a free Jonas Brothers show, but if you miss out or your parents hate you, you can catch the dreamy teen sensations at Nassau Coliseum July 19th through the 21st. Which is like, OMG, totally a million years away and Ashley’s mom is letting her go and why can’t I ever do anything fun?!?!

Would you do something ridiculous for 3 million dollars? I would: ruin my fashion sense, make me say stupid things, even make me sing if I’ll be getting a payout like that. I suppose that puts me in the same boat as Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt of The Hills, who have more or less sold out and cashed in.

According to In Touch Weekly, the couples’ major appearances, photo shoots, and “business deals” have led to their sizable 1.5 mill a year salary.

“We are trying to entertain in every aspect of our lives,” Heidi confirmed in the In Touch blog.

Perhaps In Touch should review how much of their income was generated by tabloids alone. . . including their own. Nothing can beat the Spencer-Heidi-US Weekly threesome, though. Is everything they do a “cover story”?!
