Katy Perry had her 27th birthday Tuesday, and celebrated by having her cake and eating it lobbing it at her fans.

The ‘California Gurls’ singer was performing at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena on Monday October 24th, the night before her birthday, when her crew surprised her at the end of her show with a birthday sing-a-long.

A blue-coiffed Perry was then presented with a cake, promptly blew out the candles and, well, you can see the rest of her rock ‘n’ roll cake-chucking antics in the video below:

In other Perry birthday news, the pop star requested that fans donate to an animal charity, rather than sending her presents for her big day.

Writing on Twitter, Perry asked people to donate to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA):

“Thanks for the sweet B-day messages! For my b-day I have set up a donation page http://www.aspca.org/katyperry. The voice for ANIMALS! Give if u can!”

The singer and wife of British comedian Russell Brand is currently performing in the UK on her ‘California Dreams’ tour.

The coffee-and-doughnuts chain is aiming to expand in untapped parts of Colorado, Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. For the record, there’s approximately one Dunkin’ Donuts in the Northeast for every 9,700 residents (I make that 22 cops); in the West, that ratio dips to every 1.2 million people (2,700 cops).

If you do fancy opening a DD outlet of your own, the company is going to make it worth your while. New franchisees who open stores in the aforementioned regions are being offered perks such as a lifetime supply of Bavarian Kreme ‘nuts reduced royalty fees for the first three years and an extra $10,000 for local advertising.

For contributing to America’s rocketing obesity problem, franchisees will also be offered flexible design concepts including free-standing stores, end caps, in-line sites, kiosks and gas stations. The only catch, according to the firm’s own guidelines: you’ll need to be worth three quarters of a million bucks to get started. Here’s John Dawson, Chief Development Officer for Dunkin’ Brands, with some business speak:

The company is hoping to open doors in the West from early 2013. Specifically, it’s aiming to introduce stores in Denver and Colorado Springs, Houston and Waco, Lincoln and Omaha, Oklahoma City and Tulsa, and Santa Fe and Albuquerque. If you’re in any of those places, congrats! I, er, guess. At least this lot will be happy.

This is arcade classic Pac-Man as you’ve never seen it before: played out across not one maze, but (at the time of writing) 3,159 mazes, all linked together.

The World’s Biggest Pac-Man was designed to show off Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9, and allows users to design and upload their own Pac-Man levels to a rapidly expanding patchwork quilt of mazes. You can log in by linking the page to your Facebook account, or just play for fun. Every maze features an exit point on each of its four sides, leading to the neighbouring maze.

At least 90% of these user-created maps are obviously rubbish, with people incorporating messages such as ‘LAWL OMG’ or ‘STEVE LUVZ DUBSTEP’ into their maze. Still, the scale is certainly novel, at least for the first eight minutes, by which time it becomes a bit boring to play.

Now, did I hear someone say “PAC-MAN MMORPG!!!“?

This incredible Super Mario Bros. cake was spotted in the Nintendo World Store on Sunday, as part of the ongoing neverending celebrations over the Mario series turning a quarter of a century old.

It was cut (and partly eaten) by none other than Mario creator and Shigeru Miyamoto, alongside Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. How could they?! Well they could and they did. Kotaku has a video to prove it.

We obediently listened and learned, but those who didn’t became food sculptors. Here are eight amazing food sculptures crafted and moulded from everything from chocolate to cheese to gummi bears (yes):

Carl Warner specializes in whimsical, fantastic landscapes built entirely from food (“foodscapes” in Warner’s words) – his entire gallery is well worth checking out.

An entire room and its occupants, meticulously recreated using Cheetos. Gross. But also amazing. Sadly, I’ve no idea about who the original artist is, but my hat goes off to them.

This octopus is made exclusively from tins of food. A quite remarkable canstruction.

“Dita von Cheese” by Prudence Emma Staite. Based, of course, on popular burlesque performer Dita von Teese.

Keep it cool: this butter pig with feasting piglets was designed by Jim Victor.

A mammoth chandelier, crafted exclusively from gummi bears by artist Ya Ya Chou. Here’s a close-up.

The now-wife of a professional gamer e-mailed the above pics to Kotaku, explaining how she surprised her groom with the amazing Mario cake shown.

The bride, who seems very supportive of her man’s geekiness, describes the cake and other Mario-related wedding plans:

“I had found pics of a very similar cake online, and it inspired me to create my own Mario cake and surprise my groom on our wedding day (November 5th). My groom is a professional video gamer, and his favorite game is Mario cart. We were married in Vegas, so I had the bottom tier a desert theme, and I went with the old school Peach Castle rather than a modern one. I’m brunette, and my groom a blonde, so I had them customize Peach and Mario accordingly. The only hint I gave my groom about the cake was I had a pair of Mario boxers delivered to him to wear during the ceremony the morning of the big day, and then I had our rings brought forth by the ring bearer on a 1-Up key-chain which later snuck itself into my bouquet for the rest of the day. The entire cake was edible, the desert tier was berries and creme, the galaxy was bouncy chocolate with chantilly cream, and the castle (which has been preserved in my freezer for the 1 year anniversary) is peanut butter chocolate. I hope you post the pics on your site, so your readers can find more inspiration for their own wedding creations!”

They’re too stupid to keep from going extinct and they want to eat your new bamboo flooring.

Well, that part’s not exactly true, but a BBC wildlife expert is saying we should quit trying to help those stupid ungrateful pandas anyway. Chris Packham sees the animals as “evolutionary dead ends” and says that they’re not very clever and have problems reproducing in captivity. (When was the last time you tried to perform in captivity, buddy?) On Britain’s GMTV, he said:

“Can we really afford these big charismatic animals that suck up so much of our funding?”

And he went on to say to the Telegraph:

…let’s face it: Conservation, both nationally and globally, has a limited amount of resources, and I think we’re going to have to make some hard, pragmatic choices.”

While many wildlife enthusiasts disagree, Packham believes resources would be better spent on protecting endangered habitats like rainforests. Pandas are the world’s rarest bears, and the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. draws 3 million visitors a year to the panda exhibit.

As explained in the surprisingly detailed video below, Pizza Hut has launched a new app to make procuring junk food from where you sit even easier.

The free app is pretty comprehensive, allowing for detailed customization of orders. It also cleverly uses the phone’s touch screen interface to add tactile components to your pizza ordering such as manually resizing pizzas, drag and drop toppings and a function in which you shake the phone to sauce your wings. From Pizza Hut’s press release:

The pizza ordering section allows consumers to virtually build their own pizza by choosing a type of crust in the scroll wheel, “pinching” to select size, and dragging-and-dropping toppings onto the pizza, all with visual confirmation. If an overeager pizza customer adds too many toppings, the pizza explodes and toppings go flying across the screen with an alert to make their pizza happier with fewer toppings. Toppings are easily deleted by clicking them in a generated text list. To customize for half and half, users tilt the phone left or right and the toppings move to one side or the other. When finished, the user sees a visual representation of what their pizza will look like.

Functions for the all three menus (wings, pasta, pizza) are similarly interactive, and while it’s certainly a bit on the “cute” side, I have to give points for creativity here. There’s even a virtual fridge with coupons available to you at your local Pizza Hut.

It might be a nice thing to have for kids, especially since the app includes a tilt game called “Hut Racer” to keep you entertained whilst your pizza is being- well, whatever it is they do with pizzas there. (I’m a born and bred New Yorker- if someone didn’t swear at you while you ordered it, it ain’t a pizza, dude.)
